ABOUT SARDINIA

Sardinia is at the epicenter of European wine making.

Page 5: International Mediterranean Sardinian Wine

ABOUT SARDINIA

Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and an autonomous region of Italy. The combination of hills and plains, coastal regions and inland areas offers a diversity of topography and a microclimate ideal for vine growing.

A handful of producers are creating high-quality wines, which are gradually gaining international recognition. One of Sardinia’s industries is that of cork so most Sardinian wines have natural corks.

Sardinia's terroir is full of benefits for winemaking. The combination of hills and plains, coastal regions and inland areas offers useful diversity of topography and microclimate. To further these benefits, the available soils and bedrocks vary from granite, limestone and sandstone to mineral-rich clays and free-draining sands and gravels. Located between 38 and 41 degrees north, the island lies at the southern edge of European viniculture, but thanks to the cooling effects of the Mediterranean, the maritime climate here is more forgiving than in other regions at this latitude (e.g. Greece and Turkey).

SARDINIAN GRAPE VARIETIES

The portfolio of varieties planted in Sardinian vineyards bear little resemblance to those in any other Italian wine region. One finds varieties of French and Spanish origin, exemplified by Grenache (called Cannonau in Sardinia). Some believe that the grape originated in Sardinia, and was taken back to Spain by the Aragonese, who occupied the island in the 14th Century.

There is also the Cagnulari, a rare grape variety from Sardinia, grown mostly in the island’s northwestern quarter, where it is used to produce full-bodied red wines. Cagnulari is seldom found outside Sardinia and are regarded as one of the island’s many regional specialties. The fruit profile can range from red berries through to spiced plums and notes of black pepper. Ample tannins support the wine, making it worthy of a few years aging.

Vermentino grape: The origin of the Vermentino grape is uncertain being more widely planted on Corsica and southern France. There is even a school of thought supporting the theory that the Vermentino grape originated in the Middle East. It is certainly the most loved white produced in Sardinia.

Carignano in Sardinia produces spicy reds with lively acidity and soft tanins, accentuated with subtle herlbal notes in the finish. A great alternative to Chianti wines. Aside from the better-known grape varieties mentioned above, the island makes use of several exclusive varieties, including Monica, Nieddera, Vernaccia, Bovale , Nasco, Malvasivo, Moscato and Barbera Sarda.

SARDINIAN GRAPE VARIETIES

It is widely believed that the Cannonau wines from Sardinia have the highest levels of polyphenols of any wine. Polyphenols are full of antioxidants and wonderful for your arteries.

Italian Wine Classification System

• DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) is the main tier of Italian wine classification, and covers almost every traditional Italian wine style. There are around 330 individual DOC titles, each with a set of laws governing its viticultural zone, permitted grape varieties and wine style.

 • IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) was introduced in 1992, to allow a certain level of freedom to Italy's

winemakers. Prior to 1992, many wines failed to qualify for DOC – not because they were of low quality, but because they were made from grape varieties (or blends) not sanctioned under DOC laws. The IGT classification focuses on the region of origin, rather than grape varieties or wine styles.
