The University of Regensburg offers a Master's of Science (M.Sc.)programme in "Experimental and Clinical Neurosciences" (ECN). It is sponsoredby the Elite Network Bavaria (ENB) as part of the excellence initiative of the Stateof Bavaria. The programme was established in April 2006 and was successfullyevaluated by a panel of distinguished neuroscientists in 2010.

The ECN programme is a registered member of the Network of EuropeanNeuroscience Schools (NENS). NENS was founded in 2003 and is a structure ofthe Federation of European Neurosciences Societies (FENS). NENS representsover 130 graduate schools in neuroscience. Membership of NENS helps toensure high quality standards and provides a number of benefits for studentsincluding training stipends and participation in annual meetings.

The ECN programme provides excellent students with the basic-to-advanced knowledge and skills that meet the credit requirements for aUniversity Master's of Sciences (M.Sc.) degree. The programme stronglyemphasizes interdisciplinary research in neuroscience. International researchacitivities are promoted by existing international cooperations with excellentresearch laboratories in many countries. Being an elite programme it providesintensive supervision and research opportunities that stimulate rapid learning ofrelevant knowledge and skills.

This brochure provides an overview for our new students. Furtherinformation can be obtained on the web site of the ECN:

The Elite Master's of Science (M.Sc.) study programme in "Experimentaland Clinical Neurosciences" (ECN), provides candidates with basic to advancedknowledge and laboratory skills needed for a successful career in research andapplied fields of neuroscience. As implied by the title of this programme thecourse work is interdisciplinary in nature. The course work will be divided intothree main streams of scientific activity:

CLN

SYSMCN

Themodule is concerned with fundamentals of

neuroscience.

Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience (MCN)

The module dealswith regulatory, behavioural, and cognitive systems

in both humans and animal models.

Systemic Neuroscience (SYS)

The module coversneurological, psychiatric, and neurodegenerative

disorders.

Clinical Neuroscience (CLN)

The regular course work takes place over three academic semesters. Thecourse work consists of:

Lectures (L): basic and advanced

Seminars (S)

Tutorials (T)

3 Methodological Practica (MPr): 3 weeks each

3 Project Practica (PPr): 6-8 weeks each

Weekend Seminars (WS): off campus, specialized topics

Master's Thesis: six months

The lectures, seminars, and tutorials will be conducted in three blocks (A,B, C). Each block lasts for three weeks. Additional courses will be held during themethodological practica. Regular attendance and active participation will beexpected from each student. At the end of each block a written examination willbe given to test your newly acquired knowledge (see pages 6-8). In addition,three final oral exams will be held at the end of the second semester. Successfulparticipation in each course and test will be rewarded by credit points (CP). Atotal of 90 CP is required to fulfill the requirements for the M.Sc. degree. The CPwill be assigned according to the following scheme:

8 CP for Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience (MCN)

8 CP for Systemic Neuroscience (SYS)

8 CP for Clinical Neuroscience (CLN)

6 CP (x 3) for each of the oral exams (MCN, SYS, CLN)

6 CP (x 3) for each of the Project Practica (PPr)

30 CP for the Master's Thesis and defence

= 90 CP in total(corresponding to 120 ECTS in a 4 semester programme)
