With modern facilities situated in a world-class city, there is no better place to study law than at the University of San

Francisco. The San Francisco Bay Area’s legal and business market offers unparalleled training and career opportunities. Home to Silicon Valley, leading international law firms, and corporations, the region is the business and financial capital of the West Coast of the United States and is a rich environment for observing American law in action. Whatever your plans are once you receive your degree, USF will prepare you with the knowledge, skills, and professional networking opportunities to help get you there.

The USF School of Law, founded in 1912 and accredited by the American Bar Association, offers a rigorous education with a global perspective within a diverse, supportive community. The law school is an Academic Partnership School of the American Society of International Law.

Our expert full-time and adjunct professors bring to the classroom the highest educational credentials, substantial practical experience, and an underlying dedication to teaching, scholarship, and service. Our students are among the most ethnically diverse in any law school in the United States, and Master of Laws students are integrated into many of the Juris Doctor courses. Our alumni are a vast network of practicing attorneys specializing in many diverse legal fields.

The law school is housed in the Koret Law Center, one of the most modern law school facilities in America. The center includes the technologically advanced Dorraine Zief Law Library and Kendrick Hall, which is home to classrooms, offices, and student lounges. The Koret Law Center sits on the University of San Francisco’s stunning 55-acre campus. Just steps from campus, Golden Gate Park is a green oasis for exercise, running, cycling, fun, exploration, or studying in the afternoon sun. LLM students gather to attend sports events and take a day-long excursion on the California Coast.

Your Course of Study

Both LLM degree programs require completion of 25 units and can be completed in two full-time semesters (August through May). All foreign-trained students must complete the American Legal System I and American Legal Writing and American Legal System II courses that provide a strong foundation in the structure of the American legal system. The courses also teach the practical skills lawyers need to succeed, including fact gathering, legal analysis, legal research and writing, problem-solving, and oral advocacy.

Graduates of the LLM program may be eligible to take the bar exam in many U.S. states. Although students are responsible for researching eligibility requirements, which vary by state, they should inform their academic advisors at the beginning of the fall semester to discuss bar-related courses that they might choose to take.

The LLM in International Transactions and Comparative Law program is your gateway to a thriving career in American, international, and

comparative law. The program equips students with a strong grounding in legal theory and practical skills to pursue gainful employment in the United States and abroad.

Students who choose this program specialize in one of two areas. The first option is to focus on the law relating to international business and commercial transactions or international human rights law. Students who select the second option focus on an area of American law as the subject of a comparative law study. Students pursuing either track may tailor their education by selecting from many recommended and elective courses. The coursework recognizes the increasing globalization of the practice of law, whether specializing in comparative law, business, or human rights law.

INTERNATIONAL HUMAN

RIGHTS LAW CLINIC

USF’s innovative Frank C. Newman International Human Rights Law Clinic is one of the only law clinics nationwide that gives students an opportunity to advocate for human rights issues at the United Nations in New York, with the Commission on the Status of Women, and in Geneva, Switzerland, with the Human Rights Council. Our students experience human rights mechanisms first- hand as they present written and oral interventions at the UN, as well as advocate for language in resolutions that help to pro-mote and protect human rights. A number of our graduates have gone on to work with NGOs and in some instances UN agencies at its headquarters or in their home countries.

LAURA RIVERA MARINERO ’09Democratic Governance Coordinator, United Nations Development Program, El Salvador

“Going to Geneva with the Frank C. Newman International Human Rights Law Clinic was a unique opportunity to put into practice the theory I had gained in the classroom. This experience gave my career a whole new perspective, and I think of it as the turning point in my path to an international career.”
