FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Monday, January 8, 2018 INTERNATIONAL LEADERS IN YOUTH SPORT COACHING & DEVELOPMENT TO BE IN LAUSANNE FOR 2-DAY CONFERENCE & WORKSHOPS FEB 1-2, 2018. SwissTech Convention Center - UNLOCKING HUMAN POTENTIAL- LAUSANNE – January 8, 2017 – The Inside Game Coaching Network, in collaboration with Education4Peace and SportAttitude, will host its annual sport coaching leadership conference February 1-2 at the SwissTech Convention Centre, with participation of world renowned leaders in sport coaching, leadership and youth development. This annual event was created to provide coaching education and practical resources for coaches of youth athletes that goes beyond what is offered by traditional coaching courses. The conference focuses on the non-technical elements of sport – the INSIDE GAME - such as mental preparation, managing emotions, self-awareness, coach- athlete relationships, positive coaching, communication, attitude and team-building. Youth sport coaches are extremely influential in the development of young athletes. Nevertheless, there are minimal requirements to become a coach, and current coaching courses focus primarily on the technical aspects of the sport, versus the pedagogy of coaching. As a result, a high number of kids drop out of sport at adolescence, when the pressure gets too high and sport is no longer fun. “Many coaches are still coaching old-school “, says event organizer Cindy Burwell, ”influenced by the media, television and past experiences. Coaches of young athletes are still shouting at kids to get results, punishing young athletes when they make mistakes and focusing too much on wins and losses, versus people development. This has to change.” The new paradigm in youth sport coaching, proven through research, is focused on building strong connections and relationships between coaches and athletes. Athletes respond better, improve performances and have increased enjoyment of sport when they have a personal relationship with the coach and when they are more self-aware and able to manage their emotions. Mark Milton, founder of Education4Peace and SportAttitude, and co-author of Football: A path to Self-Awareness, is currently working with Servette Football Club in Geneva. He says “When we show both coaches and young kids how to manage emotions and become more self-aware, there is increased enjoyment, trust and correspondingly an improvement in performance.” During the two-day conference participants will be introduced to this new coaching paradigm through a series of presentations and practical workshops led by international leaders in youth sport coaching from the USA, Canada, Belgium and Switzerland. (See page 2). The conference is open to all—coaches, athletic program directors, parents of young athletes, and anyone with an interest in develop youth through sports.
