Itwasin1995and1996thatGrandmasterCarlitoLanadachangedsomemovementsinsomeoftheforms.AndalsoKuntawchangeditsuniformshortlybeforethatwhichisalotliketheSikaranuniform.Stevenhascontinuedtoteachandtraininthewayshewasoriginallytaught.Stevenhasheard,(buthasnotverified)thatsomeoftheformswentbacktotheoriginalways,andthat5formshavebeenaddedjustbelowBlackBelt. StillwithalltherespecttoGrandmasterLanadafortheknowledgehebestowedonStevenandtheprev-eledgeofbeingabletohelpspreadtheartofKuntawthroughinstructionandthemedia,StevenisproudofthetimespenttrainingintheKuntawways.Approximately40years. SowhatisinthisInformativeIssuearetheverybasicconceptsandphilosophiesofthebeginningofKuntawtrainingasStevenDowdfirstlearnedwhenstartingKuntaw,andcontinuestoteachtodaywhentrainingotherpractitioners. TheKuntawstructurehaschangedinwaysthroughouttime,whenStevenstarted;7thDegreeRed,WhiteandBlueBeltwastheGrandmastersbelt,butastimeandsocietyhaschangedsohasKuntaw,whichatthistime(Stevenhasbeentoldandobserved)thatGrandmasterLanadaisnowaGreatGrandmaster,10thDe-greeRed(w/GoldTrim)BeltandGrandmaster(9thDegreeRed(w/SilverTrim)Belt). OfcoursebeinformedthatKuntawwasasoftartoriginally.HoweverGrandmasterLanadaaddedthehardthroughhisexperienceinKarateandSikaran,tomakeitahardandsoftstyle;inhisbelieftomakeKuntawamoresuperiorart.IthasalsobeensaidthatthroughpicturesKuntawjustlookslikeKarate,howevertoseeatrueKuntawistaexecutethemovementstheyareflowingandgracefulshowingaunificationofmindandbody,anddemonstratingthepowerintheexecutionoftheblocks,strikes,andkicks.

This is an introduction to the Filipino martial art known as Kuntaw“TheFilipinoArtofHand&FootFighting.”Inlearningandpracticingthebasicmovementsofstriking,blocking,andkickingandthencombiningthembyexecutingthe Panilingkas and the Batayan forms,apersonwillbeginthestudyofKuntaw. Instudyingmovementsitwillberealizedthatthereisapurposeineachdefensiveorof-fensivetechniquedemonstrated.Themovementscanbeseparated,intermingled,orinterchanged.ItmustberealizedthatthereisnosubstituteforactualteachingofaKuntawinstructor. As in anything of knowl-edgeandvaluethestudentmustpractice to perfect the technique and in so doing will acquire the skill.OnethingthatIhavealwayssaidtomystudents,thewords“ICan’t”areunheardof.Wordsthatareacceptableare“ICan”“IWill”or“IWillTry”.Apersonwillbeamazedatwhatcanbeaccomplished if only they will set theirmindtoitandtry. Kuntaw is an ancient art oftheKatutubongFilipino,handandfootfightinginitshardandsoftways.Itistheoldestessentialartofself-defensedevisedbytheFilipinoMuslimroyaltiesbeforetheSpanishregime. Sincethedawnofciviliza-tion,manhasinvariablyemployedhis superior strength with the use ofhishandsandfeettofightandto defend himself and family in thefaceofdanger.Later,thiskindofunarmedcombatwasrevolu-

tionizedandperfectedintodiffer-entstylesofself-defense. Self-defense today has manyprevailingstyles.Eachracehasitsownwayinimprov-ing their own styles within its legitimatesphere.Yetnoracecanmonopolizetheartofhandandfootfightingandclaimafterwardsthat it all originated from them sincetheartisundeniablyinherenttoallmen.Theconceptofmodernself-defenseisbaseduponhistori-calevolutionaryeventsthatcanbetracedbackfrompastgenera-tions.Inthisart,itwasprovenbytheKatutubongKapatid(nativebrothers),whentheyillustratedtheirbraveryandnationalisminprotectingthehonoroftheirnativeland(thePhilippines),whichtheycherish,andlove.

KUNTAW It ends in “W” not “O”

As told by Grandmaster Carlito A.Landa Sr. in 1972. WhentheLanada’sgrand-fatherbroughtthefamily’sfightingarttoLuzonIslandfromMind-anao,theyreplacedthe“O”witha“W”toconformtotheTagaloglanguage.ThewordKuntawisde-rivedfromtwowords,kunsegradoandhataw.“Kunsegrado”-mean-ingwithsacredness,and“Hataw”-meaningtostrike.

Belief Itisbelievedthatahealthyandstrongbodypromotesthegrowthofastronghealthyspirit.Aphysicalwellbeingexcludesawidefeelingofself-confidenceandawholesomeoutlookonlife.

Todefendone’slifeorlivesofothers is one of the fundamental accomplishmentsofman.Thereisnomotiveforamantoforfeithislifeofthelivesofhislovedones through ignorance of how to defendhimselforherself.Kuntawtrainingwillspeedupyourreflexaction,inspireconfidence,andimpartscientificknowledgeoftheprinciplesofself-defense. In Kuntaw all parts of the bodyareusedinperformingthetechniquesofstriking,blocking,andkicking.Thisstrengthenstheinternalorgansanddevelopsastrongandhealthybody. To adopt the style of Kun-tawthestudentfirsttakesanintel-ligentandprogressivestep,whichwillprovidementalandphysicalbenefits,notonlyintheimmedi-atefuture,butalsofortherestofthestudent’slife.Kuntawwipesoutthedifferenceofsize,weight,andreach.ThosetrainedinthestyleofKuntawgainknowledge,skillsthatleadtoself-confidencethatwillgivethestudentpoiseandassurancewhenaffrontedbyanassailant no matter how strong or vicious.Kuntawdependsnotonbrutestrength,butonpsychology,knowledge of the anatomy and the skill that comes with practicing techniques mentally and physi-cally.Coordination of Mind and Body Thebodyismuchlikeaniceberg,thephysicalstrengthisthatsmallportionoftheiceberg,whichisreadilyvisible.Whilethemental strength is that much larger portionoftheicebergthatisnotvisible,butunderthewaterline.

Thestudentmustunderstand.Ittakesbothpartstomaketheone,theunity.Together,themindandbodycanbestrongastheicebergandovercomeoceansofobstacles.Unification of the Mind and Body The coordination of the mindandbodyisthebeginning.The ultimate goal is the total uni-ficationofthesetwo.Inunifying,thestudentwillfindunderstandinginallfunctionsofthebody.Unifi-cationisnotjustthecoordinationofthemindwiththebody,butthetotalmovementtounderstandallthings.Development of the

Mind and Body{Coordination through correct principles} People whom lack will powerhavebadhabits,thosewithdifficultyinconcentratingarerest-less,andthosewhohaveone-trackmindslackflexibility,thesebadhabitsmustbeovercome.

‘ SAI ‘ Mindoverthebodycontrolhasmanynames,somemostpopu-laris“KI”and“CHI”.InKuntaw

theprocessiscalled“SAI”.ThreeBasicStepsforSAIDevel-opment:1.KeepOnePoint:Tokeeponepointthestudentmaydosobysettling the mind at a single spot movedapproximatelytwoinchesbelowthenaval,whichistheoreti-callythecenterofgravityofthehumanbody.2.RelaxCompletely:Todothis,the student must lower the center ofgravityineverypartofthebodyaslowaspossibletoagivenposi-tionsothecenterofgravityfortheentirebodyisatitsmoststableandbalancedposition.3.ExtensionofSai:Thisisthestate,whenthemindbecomesoneor is in harmony with the spirit oftheuniverseandnature.[Thisconditionisonlypossiblewhencompletelyrelaxedandthecenterofgravityhasnaturallysettledatthelowestpossiblepointinthebody.] Thethreestepsmustbeusedsimultaneously.IfonlyoneisusedSAIwillnotbeachieved.Practice,concentration,anddeter-

mination are the characteristics that thestudentmusthave,orthedesiretoadvanceinSAIwillnottakeform.

Breathing Technique To attain SAI in Kuntaw properbreathingmustbeadheredtoo.WiththistechniquenotonlywillSAIbeattainable,butcontrolofthebody’sphysicalconditioninadrenaline rush or fatigue will also beincontrol.Relaxing the body:1.Relaxthebody.2.Breathinthroughthenosewiththemouthshut,fillingthestomachthenthechestareawithair.3.Breatheoutthroughthemouthwith the tongue at the roof of the mouth,expellingairfromthechest,thenfromthestomach.Energizing the body:1.Breathinthroughthenosewiththemouthshut,fillingthestomachthenthechestareawithair.2.Blowairoutthroughthemouthwiththetongueatthebottomofthemouth,expellingairfromthechest,thenfromthestomach.

Stable Stance[Tayong Pagpugay]Thefeetareparallelandshoulderwidthapart,withtheweightdistributedequally.Fromthisstancethebodycanmoveinanydirectionmakinganeasytransitionintoanotherstanceinstantaneously.Thisisapassivestance,usedingreetingsandsalutations.

Forward Stance [Tayong Pasulong]

Theweightismainlyonthefrontleg,dis-tributionbeing70%ofthebodyweightonthefrontleg,with30%ontherearleg.Thekneeofthefrontlegisbentforwardoverthefootenoughsonottobeabletoseeit.Therearlegisstraightandfirmwiththefootata45-degreeangleouttotheside. Thewaistisstraightwiththebackupright,makingthisastrongstance.Fromthefor-wardstance,executionofpunches,chops,etc.arestrongandwithpower.Withtherearleg,theexecutionoffrontalandroundhousekickcanbeeasilydelivered,addingproperdevelopmentoftimingandbalance.

Back Stance[Tayong Paurong]Withthebackstancetherearlegmaintainsmostoftheweight.Approximately70%,withthefootturnedout90degreesfromthebodyandthekneebentdirectlyoverthebigtoeofthefoot.Thefrontleghas30%ofthebodyweight,withthefootfacingdirectlyforwardandthekneeslightlybent.Thebodyisloweredstraightdowntoaddtothestabilityofthestance.Withtheposition-ingofthefeetandbuttocksatriangleisformedcausingbalanceandstability.Attentionmustbepaidtothepositioningofthelegsandbody.Otherwise,thetendencyistoleantooneside.

Cat Stance[Tayong Pusa]Withthecatstancemostoftheweightisontherearleg,95%to98%.Therearfootisturned45degreesfromthefront.Thekneeisbent,andthebodylowered.Thefrontleghaszeroto5%ofthebodiesweightwiththeballofthefootrestingontheground.Thefrontfootisfacingforwardwiththekneeslightlybenttocompensatetheloweringofthebody.Thebodyisstraightfromthewaistuptoaddstabilityandbalancetothecatstance.

Straddle Stance[Tayong Pasaklang ]Thefeetareparallelandplacedoutsideshoulder’swidth,withtheweightofthebodydistributedevenlyonbothlegs.Thefeetfacingstraightforward,kneesbentandpositionedoverthefeet.Thebodyisstraight,butloweredtocompensateforbalanceandgivestrengthtothestance.

Building a Foundation Thebasicrequirementinanystyleofmartialartstrainingisasolidfoundationandstrongframework.ThisisstressedinKuntaw.Thestanceisthefoundationthatexercisesthebody’sframework,bothmustbemas-teredbeforeastudentcanadvancetohigherlevelsoftraining. Withoutaproperstance,anyfighterwhethermartialartist,boxer,orwrestlerprobablycouldnotusetheirhandandfeeteffectively,andwouldlosetheirbalancewhenattackedbyanopponent. Eventhemosthighlyinvolvedsystemswithinthemartialartsarerootedinthebasics.Ifthebasicstanceisincorrectinform,thenitwillfollowthatallothertechniques,whethersimpleorcomplex,willbeincorrect.Basicstancesarenotmerelypostures,balance,speed,andpowerbutarederivativesfromthebasicstances.Astrong,stablebaseisessentialforanydefensiveoroffensivemaneuver.Thedevelopmentofspeedandun-brokenmomentumrequiresproperbalanceandstability.Moreover,differenttechniquesaremoreeffectiveinparticularstances.Thisistruewhetheryoumovedefensivelyoroffensively. Thereareavarietyofstances,andtheyhavemanynameswithasmanythoughts,theories,orteachingsbehindthestructureofeach.Nevertheless,mastershavedevelopedeachtoserveaspecificpurpose. Eachstancedistributesthebodyweightmoreefficientlyandisquitedifferentfromanormalposture.Oncetheindividualperfectsthedifferentstances,thiswillenablethemtoattainpositionsthatprovidesolidfoundationsandstrongertechniques. Somebasicprinciplesholdtrueforallstance:1.Maintainbalancewithalowcenterofgravity. 2.Remainrelaxed.Avoidtensingmuscleswhentheyarenotinuse,{tensionburnsenergy}. 3.Movesmoothlywithouttelegraphingintent,andwiththegreatestspeedpossible. 4.InKuntawpowerderivesfromthehips,usethehipswiththestomachasthecenterofgravity.

Panalingkas & Batayan Forms ThePanalingkasandBatayanformsarethefirststepsincombiningKuntawtechniques.Eachtechniqueisexecutedindividually,butformedinflowingmovementsthatdisplaycoordination,timingandbalance. Basicformstaketimetomaster.Startingthemovementsshouldbeperformedwiththebodywellbal-ancedandintheproperstance.WhiledoingthePanalingkasandBatayanformstheindividualwillbeeithershifting,advancing,orretreatingandsimultaneouslywilleitherbeblocking(salag),kicking(sipa),striking(suntok)oracombinationofall.Executionofalltechniquesshouldbeslowatfirst.Astiming,speedandpowerwillbegainedthroughproperexecution. Ineachformthefirstmovementstartswiththeleftsideofthebodyuntilcompletion,thenexecutedwiththerightsideofthebodyusingtheoppositepartsofthebodyuntilcompletingtheentireform.(Thefollowingillustrationswillshowtheleftsideonly.Followbyexecutingtherightsidenextusingtheoppositepartsofthebody).Panalingkas FormsX-A1-5:HardBlocking[SalagMatindi]istaughtwiththecombinationofstrikesandkicks.Hardblockingmeetsthedefendersstrongblowsbyapplyingaclosedhandparrytobreakthedirectionoftheforceofthead-versary.Batayan formsX-B1-5:SoftBlocking[SalagMalumanay]istaughtwiththecombinationofstrikesandkicks.Softblockingreferstotheexecutionoftheblockinawaythatmoveswithandusesthemomentumoftheattacker,bythatharmonizingone’sownmovementswiththoseoftheattackerandavoidingaforce-to-forceconfrontation.Note:TheBatayanformswerediscontinuedforaperiodoftime,butreinstitutedduetotheprinciplesoftheirbasicmovements.

DuringhisdutiesaboardtheUSSRichardB.AndersonStevenhadtheopportunitytobeassignedtoCTF-77aSpecialUnitstationedinSubicBaywhichas-sistedtheArmedForcesPolice.This was the time he found and commenced his training in Kuntaw the“TheFilipinoArtofHand&FootFighting”underGrandmasterCarlitoA.Lanada.Thiswaspriorto and on the commencement of MartialLawwhichwasin1972. AfterStevensdutieswithCTF-77hereturnedtotheUSSRichardB.Andersonforashorttime,andwastransferredtoSanMaguelCommunicationStation,Philippines,locatedinSanAntonioZambalesasArmedForcesPoliceforthetownandMilitarySecurityPolicefortheNavalCommuni-cation Station and continued his traininginKuntaw. StevenwasalsoteachingKuntawattheSpringValleyCommunityCentertochildren. In 1994 Grandmaster who hadbeenintheUnitedStatesfora couple years relocated from VirginiatoSanDiego,California.

Once the Grandmaster wasthere,manythingshappened.Stevenwaspromoted to 6th degree Red,White&BlueBelt on the twenty-sec-ondofAugust1994.Also he was appointed asadministrativeadvi-sor to the Grandmaster whileMasterCothernwas appointed as tech-nicaladvisor.(StevenDowd is no longer the Grandmasters adminis-trativeadvisor). It was shortly

beforeGrandmasterLanadarelocated to San Diego that he incorporated Lima-Lima intoKuntaw,whichishisstyleofArnis. Grandmaster La-nadaintheseventiesaddedthe hard techniques from Karate so that Kuntaw wouldbecomeahardandsoftstyle,beingonlyasoftstylebefore.Butthe hard techniques were adapted to the Kuntaw philosophy and to witness a true Kuntawista doing the techniques one would justbelievethatitwasanatural part of the Kuntaw style. It was in 1995 and 1996 that Grandmas-ter Lanada made some changes in some of the intermediateandadvanceformsofKuntaw.And

some of the older forms were re-moved. SteventeachestheKuntawthat he originally learned from GrandmasterLanadainthe70’s(nottheupdatedforms,whichhewastoldthatmosthavegonebacktotheoriginalforms.Howeverithasalsobeensaidthattherearefivenewformswhichhavebeenaddedbelowblackbeltlevel).andcontinues when teaching Kun-taw he wears the uniform that he earnedwhenfirstmakingBlackBelt which is a green top with whitebottom.(hedoesnotusetheuniform of today white top with redbottomlikeSikaranpractitio-nersdo),StevenpromotesKuntawwhentheoppurtunityarises. In1996StevenmovedtoPahrump,Nevadaandopenedaschoolforafewyears,teachingKuntaw.In2000,hehadanoffer
