    4/35Annual Review 01

It has been a year of momentousachievement: the number of countriesin International Inspiration has almost

doubled from eight to 15; and theInternational Olympic Committee(IOC) and International ParalympicCommittee (IPC) have recognisedInternational Inspiration as anofficial London 2012 programme,an important and integral elementof our Games. There has beengrowing interest from across theOlympic Movement discussionsare now underway with the IOC,future Olympic host cities and with

our stakeholders to determine thefuture direction of InternationalInspiration post 2012.

International Inspiration hasexpanded significantly in Africa,Asia and the Caribbean witha vast number of exciting projectsopening doors for young people tosport, physical education, leadershipand cultural relations. On a personalnote, I have been honoured andhumbled to have seen first-hand

the tremendous success of theprogramme in India. The socialissues that sport and play arehelping tackle are strikingly diverse:empowering girls who may nowchoose an alternative path to forcedmarriage in rural India, enablingthe participation of children withdisabilities in Malaysia, offeringalternatives to gang culture inLondon and Trinidad and Tobago, and saving lives by teaching

    swimming in Bangladesh.

    I am delighted to

introduce the InternationalInspiration Annual Reviewfor 2009-10.

Linking schools across the globeLinking schools in the UK withpartner schools in other InternationalInspiration countries has had a majorimpact on the lives of thousandsof young people. The 164 schoolpartnerships represent a uniqueopportunity for schools to buildinnovative approaches to use PE andsport to tackle issues in their schools, for pupils and teachers to experienceand explore other cultures, andto develop valuable life skills, inleadership, communication, planningand presentation.

Because of the exciting and creativeprojects that have emerged from thepartnerships, participating schoolsin both the UK and overseas havebecome hubs for surrounding schoolsin their area, enabling them to

share the benefits of what they havelearned far more widely.

Inspiring connectionsInternational Inspiration ambassador and four-time Olympic gold medallistSir Chris Hoy visited one of International Inspirations partner schools inCheshire to see how pupils are linking up with their peers in Malaysia.

Sir Chris spoke via live video link from Hartford High School to pupils6,000 miles away in the Malaysian city of Ipoh. He watched studentsin Cheshire play a traditional Malaysian game called Sepak Takraw a combination of volleyball and football.

Talking to these inspiring young people from Hartford High School hasreally demonstrated to me how the International Inspiration programme ismaking a real difference to the lives of children and young people in theUK, as well as creating an incredible impact overseas.

part in InternationalInspiration has made memore helpful and I enjoysharing my skills withother students.Oliver, age 15, Nottinghamshire

UK School GamesIn September 2009, young leaders from the UK had the opportunity tovolunteer at the UK School Games in Wales. They worked alongsideyoung leaders from 12 International Inspiration countries to help deliverthe event, which involved 1,600 elite athletes of school age competingacross 10 different sports. The young leaders gained hands-on experienceof volunteering at a large-scale event, taking part in training and gainingqualifications in umpiring major sports. Not only has this experiencebroadened the horizons of the young people involved, it has alsoincreased their awareness of other cultures and inspired them to addressissues in their schools and local communities in different ways.

    Brazil

PurposeInternational Inspiration is workingwith National Government and localauthorities of 11 states in Brazilssemi-arid north-eastern region. Many of the 13 million children wholive there rarely have the opportunityto play sport, partly because thereare few qualified PE teachers andsports facilities in schools. InternationalInspiration is supporting the revisionof the curriculum for Segundo Tempo,

a national after-school scheme aimedspecifically at reaching millions ofyoung people from disadvantagedbackgrounds who lack access to sport.

The programme is training andempowering teachers and helpingyoung people and local managers topromote sport within their communitiesand schools. Across the region, sportsfestivals are offering young people thechance to try sports sometimes for

the first time. Local people andpoliticians are recognising the veryreal benefits that sport can achieve.

International Inspiration has trained more than9,600 teachers, community coaches and otherpractitioners since the programme began in 2007

More than 460,000 children have taken part in625 sports festivals since the programme began

A sporting chanceBrazil is preparing to host the 2014FIFA World Cup and the 2016Olympic Games and ParalympicGames in Rio de Janeiro. It is theperfect time for InternationalInspiration to support local authoritiesin highlighting the importance of PE,sport and play for children andyoung people. In 2009, the numberof professional PE teachers increasedby up to 80 per cent in 13 of the26 local authorities where theprogramme is active. Two authoritiesin the state of Pernambuco havesignificantly increased their sportbudgets over the past 12 months. Moreover, in June 2009, themunicipality of Cruz recognisedaccess to sport and leisure as afundamental right for every child.

Celebrating sportIn 2009, more than 32,000 childrentook part in 40 sports festivals acrossthe region. Half of these childrencame from deprived rural areas,60 per cent were girls and asignificant number of local childrenjoined in. These festivals are not justabout having fun and giving youngpeople the chance to try out newsports. They are a vital componentof International Inspirations

programme in Brazil helping localcommunities and politicians realisethe benefits of bringing communitiestogether. Learning to win, lose, workin a team and organise these eventsis giving children a sense of whatthey can achieve so they can goon to even greater success.

460,000More than 460,000 children havetaken part in 625 sports festivals

By organising sports festivals, Joo is determined to tackle some of theproblems affecting young people in the region including child labour, lowaspirations and high drop-out rates from school. To make sure the rippleeffect from this programme spreads far and wide, Joo is also designinga series of workshops to share what he has learned with teachers atevery school in Pedra.

The power of sportLuis Antonio Camargo Ribas, DeputySecretary of Sports for Alagoas, recognises the lasting benefits thatInternational Inspiration has broughtfor children in his state. He hasseen for himself the power sporthas to transform childrens lives andimprove their self-esteem. Sport for allOver the next decade, through itsintegration with the Governmentof Indias sport for all scheme,International Inspiration will createsafe places for children to play, aswell as providing equipment, trainingcoaches and organising sportscompetitions in Indias 250,000 ruralvillages. To assist the Governmentof India in implementing the pilot ofthis initiative, International Inspirationtrained 430 master coaches in2009. They will go on to sharetheir skills with a further 17,000community sports coaches makingsure the programme leaves a lastinglegacy across India.

Sport in schoolsPE is a compulsory part of the schoolcurriculum in India. However, in

practice only a limited number ofIndias children have access to sportactivities. In particular, girls andpupils with disabilities have limitedopportunities to play sport eitherwithin or outside school.

International Inspiration successfullypiloted new teaching resources(known as PE Cards or PEC) in60 primary schools to enablemore young people to take part in

high-quality and inclusive PE. Nowthese child-friendly resources areto form part of the governmentsflagship universal educationprogramme. More than 20 millionprimary schoolchildren will enjoybetter access to PE in the long termand secondary school pupils willbenefit too. By May 2011, 10,000schools will use the resource todeliver 30 minutes of PE every day.

Denise heard how trained community coaches usesport to tackle problems like truancy, health care and child marriages insome of Indias most deprived rural areas.

We take it for granted in the UK that PE is an integral part of ourlives. For many of these children, its a luxury. This programme is reallyabout giving children the opportunity to get involved, to influence theircommunities and maybe use sport as a vehicle to change their lives.

    Denise Lewis, International Inspiration Ambassador

Catalyst for changeInternational Inspiration has provideda host of new opportunities forpeople to take part in grassrootssport, and to influence nationalpolicy in Azerbaijan. It has been acatalyst for the review of governmentsports policy and the InternationalInspiration programme team hasworked with the Ministry of Youthand Sport to make legislation morecomprehensive and inclusive. The new laws will create long-lastingopportunities for children and youngpeople of all abilities in schools andcommunities across the country toenjoy the benefits that sport andPE can offer.

Developing disability sportInternational Inspiration hasbeen working with the National

Paralympic Committee (NPC)of Azerbaijan to give childrenwith disabilities the chance toplay football and volleyball.By creating demand for disabilitysport, the programme is facilitatinggrassroots development, leadingto an expansion in specialist coachtraining and wider promotion ofdisability sport. One lasting benefitof this is the NPCs work with theDisabled Football Federation to

    develop coaching standards.

One young leader, trained throughInternational Inspiration, said:Since working with kids with adisability I have grown as a leader.I am more confident in running thesessions and I have learned to bemore adaptable and well organised.I think the pupils benefited from thesessions because it gave them a realsense of achievement and it alsoboosted their self-esteem.

Kabulonga Boys High School is one of 11 schools that InternationalInspiration has linked with schools in the UK. Pupils are using sport toraise awareness about each others cultures and to tackle numeracyand literacy learning.

Teachers at Kabulonga chose gifted young leaders to work in after-schoolsports activities with 40 children struggling to read and write. Youngleaders also gave children with physical disabilities the chance to playsport. Sport has provided a valuable incentive to learning and teachershave noticed a marked improvement in pupils maths and literacy skills.

International Inspiration has made me discover who I am. I was just

one of those people who participated but now I am able to plan andorganise festivals.

Hooked on sportFrom an early age, Phillip was awareof the power of sport to transformchildrens lives. As a child, he spenthis time on the streets trying to makeenough money for his school fees, and was desperate for the opportunityto play sport.

Now age 27, Phillip is helpingchildren across Zambia to enjoy theopportunities he was denied. He istraining peer leaders and coaches toreach out to disadvantaged childrenthrough sport sharing crucialmessages about HIV prevention.

If you take a fishhook and put it in thewater you are never going to catchanything. If you put bait around the

hook, you will attract many fish! Sportis our bait and our messages arehidden within the hook. By attractingchildren with the opportunity of sportwe can capture their attention andeducate them on life skills.

    Phillip Kapena Mwamba, Trainer

Playing it safeIn a country where more than onein 10 young women (age 1524)has HIV, reaching out to youth withHIV prevention messages is crucial.International Inspiration uses sportas a way to engage children andyoung people with vital informationabout how to stay healthy. Sincepoverty forces many children todrop out of school, the programmehas engaged the wider communitythrough an advocacy campaignthat includes radio discussionprogrammes and public serviceannouncements featuring nationaland local sports celebrities. Radioclubs, in which groups gather inlocal neighbourhoods to listen toprogrammes together and discuss theissues they raise, are encouragingyoung people to absorb these

    messages and play it safe.

Lessons for the long termInternational Inspiration helpedprovide the terms of reference fora National Curriculum Symposiumthat brought together more than200 stakeholders across Zambia including key ministries andorganisations to develop a newnational PE curriculum. The ZambianGovernment is now considering this

new curriculum as part of a widerreview process, with plans to rollout in all Government schools. This will secure a lasting legacy, giving three million children acrossZambia the chance to enjoy high-quality PE lessons.

Sharing notes from a small islandA link has flourished between two small island high schools in Palau andScotland. Nine students and two teachers from the Hebridean islandof Islay travelled to Palau after fundraising for the trip of a lifetime. TheScottish pupils organised two festivals for Palaus primary school pupils introducing them to rugby for the first time. The Scottish teachers met thePresident of Palau and shared their experiences of PE and health-promotionprogrammes. Palauan young leaders were warm hosts, taking the grouparound the beautiful rock islands to swim and snorkel, preparing indigenousfoods and performing local dances. The successful link continues to thriveand will extend well beyond the lifetime of International Inspiration.

The Palau experience was an incredible global connection studentsparticipated in an outstanding event that highlighted the sporting andlifestyle values underpinning the London 2012 Games.

Few Bangladeshi schools have sportshalls or playing fields and there isa scarcity of qualified PE teachers.International Inspiration is helping toimprove this situation. When biologyteacher Rashedul Kabir Rasel first gotinvolved, there were very few sportsactivities for his pupils. In the past year,Rashedul has gained the skills and

resources to enable him to organisesport festivals as well as introduceweekly PE classes. Rashedul says hisstudents are more attentive in class.Around 150 students have formeda Youth Sport Leadership Club toinspire other pupils to get involved.

As soon as hegot into the water, Parvezs natural swimming talent was obvious. Now, coaches regard him as a future national butterfly championand possibly even an international competitor. Before he learnedhow to swim, Parvez had only managed to complete one term ofschool.
