3. Disconnect the drag link from the pitman arm using a 16-228-7 Pitman Arm Wedge.

4. Using a suitable puller, remove the pitman arm from the sector shaft. The pitman arm and sector shaft are in­dexed to assure correct reassembly.

5. Disconnect the headlight wiring and remove the front hood. Remove the bolts securing the stay sides to the rear hood (stay side flange bolts). See illustration on page 4-46.

6. Disconnect and plug the hydraulic lines at the steering gear.

7. Remove the hardware securing the fuel tank mounting bracket to the frame. Lift the control panel - rear hood assembly and wedge two 3/4" nuts between the rear fuel tank support and the steering gear mounting bracket.

8. Remove the steering gear mounting bolts. Pry the steering gear upward until dowel pins clear dowel holes.

COOLING SYSTEM

RADIATOR

Removal and Installation

1. Remove the muffler.

2. Remove the radiator grill.

NOTE: The radiator grill is removed so the engine hood mounting bolts can be removed easier.

3. Remove the engine hood with side sheets.

4. Drain the coolant from the radiator.

5. Disconnect the electrical wiring from the headlights.

6. Disconnect the upper and lower radiator hoses.

7. Remove the radiator mounting bolts and remove the radiator.

8. Installation is the reverse order of removal.

GENERAL

The power take-off on this tractor is powered by the same engine clutch as the tractor. Be sure to disengage the engine clutch before engaging the PTO lever. The power take-off of the 284 tractor is a two speed design with an output of 540 rpm or 1000 rpm.. 274 tractors have a one speed design with an output of 540 rpm.

To change the output speed on 284 tractors, place the PTO lever in the

neutral position. Remove the two mount­ing bolts securing the locking plate, turn the plate upside down and secure with the mounting bolts.

A CAUTION! When changing the ~ PTO speeds always be sure to

reinstall the locking plate. Do not operate standard 540 RPM power take­off driven equipment at the 1000 RPM setting. Operating at speeds faster than 540 RPM may cause the equipment to fly apart causing personal injury.
