Thinkinglikeageographercanhelpyouseethingsdifferently.ThistalkinvitesInternationalGeographyYouthSummitparticipantstoconsiderwhatcanhappenifwemovefromamorestandard“geographyofbasicneeds”orexpert-definedapproachtotheworld,toanapproachthatstartswithquestionsaboutwhogetstodefinewhatdailyneedsare,andforwhom?Wecanlearnsomethingsfromthestandardwayofthinkingaboutbasicneeds,butitdoesrestona“one-size-fits-all”idea.And,oftenthisbasicone-size-fits-allapproachissimplymappedonaworldpoliticalmap,withcountriesshowntobevariouslymeetingornotmeetingthebasicneedsoftheirinhabitants.Instead,mytalksuggeststhatifwestartthinkingaboutneedsfromwhatwealreadyknowaboutourselvesandourowncommunities,ourhomesandneighborhoods,insteadoffromaworldmap,wecanthinkaboutbasicneedsquitedifferently.Wemaynotgetsimpleanswers,butwecanuseourgeographicalimaginationsto:

Inourso-called‘modern’societywomenarestillfacingchallengesofmenstrualtaboos.Whydomostofthewomenfeelembarrassedtospeakaboutthistopic?Someofthebeliefsaffectthewomen’semotionalstate,lifestyle,andhygiene.Wechosethistopicbecauseweourselveshavefacedmanyproblemsduringourmonthlyvisit.Wewerenotreadytoacceptthesecustoms.Wesurveyedaround20womenandgirlswhoareourclassmates,teachersandmothersinourneighborhood.Ourquestionsrangedfromspecific(e.g.:Whyareyounotallowedtoenterthekitchen?)tomoreopen-ended(e.g.:Whatdoyoufeelaboutperiods?).Fivewomenhesitatedtospeakwhiletheotherswereresponsive.Theygenuinelybelievedthatmenstrualbloodisimpureandthattheycontaminateholyplaces.Theysaidthatduringmenstruationtheywereforbiddentodothingsliketouchingplants.Weconductedanawarenesscampaign.Wespoketoourclass-matesandthewomeninourneighborhoodaboutthebiologicalprocessofmenstruation.WeattendedtheworkshopKidsEducationRevolutionwherewespoketomanypeopleabout

HorseridinginthehillstationofKodaikanalisaverypopularactivityfortourists.Thehorsesgosetdistancesaroundthelake,accompaniedbyhorsemen,andthentravelback.AsIhavebeenvisitingKodaikanalandridingthesehorsessinceaveryyoungage,Iwascuriousaboutboththehorsemenandtheirlivesandthehorsementhemselves.Idecidedtodoaphotoessayaboutthis.Iinterviewedsomehorsementofindoutthingssuchas,whyhorseridingissopopularinKodaikanal,whattypesofhorsesthereare,andalotmoreaboutthehorsementhemselves.Itookmanypicturesofthehorsemenandthehorsesastheywentabouttheirdayandattendedtotheirdailyneeds.IexploredtherecreationaluseofgeographicspaceandIexaminedthe

SathnurvillageissituatedintheBengaluruUrbanDistrict.ItisdifferentfromYelahankaNew-Town,RTNagarorIndiranagarwhichareurbanized.SathnurVillagehasmostlyduplexes,orsmallcomplexes,whiletheotherthreepredominantlyconsistoflargeapartmentcomplexes.Ourgroupconsistsofpeoplethatliveinurbanareas.WechosetolearnaboutSathnur,soastolearnaboutthetypesofservicesthatdifferentpeopleneed.Wesurveyed10differentfamiliesfromacrossSathnurabouttheservicestheyrequireanduse.Weaskedaboutschools,publictransport,hospitals,garbagecollection,electricityandpublic-placesindetail.WeeventalkedtotheSathnurGramPanchayataboutwhattheirpeoplewant.Evenjustwalkingdownthestreetssomethingsbecameevident.First,thatthepollutionlevelsinSathnurarelow,andsecond,thatroad-killofdogsandsmalleranimalsisaseriousproblem.Peoplecommentedonthelackofplaygroundstoo.WethenconsultedtheSathnurPanchayatontheseproblems,learningthattheyhadplanstobuildaparkaroundtheSrinivasapuralake.Theythoughtthathavingacentralparkwouldbringthecommunitytogetherasone.DuringourtimewiththePanchayat,wediscussedrainwaterharvesting,schools/colleges,hospitals,garbagecollection,andelectricity.WecollecteddataaboutwherethepeopleofSathnuracquiretheirdailyresourcesandmedicines,wetheninformedthePanchayatabouttheproblemspeoplewerefacing,anddiscussedpossiblesolutions.

Withtheincreasingpopulation,managingthegarbagehasbecomeamajorprobleminourcountrybothintheruralaswellasurbanareas.Ourstudyaimstodelvedeeperintothisissue.Weplantobeginbyunderstandingtheexistingsystemofgarbagemanagementindifferentlocationswithinourneighborhood.Bydifferentlocations,wemeanresidential,marketandslums.Furtherwealsowouldliketoproposesomesolutionsforeffectivegarbagemanagementandlookintothepossibilitiesofhowstudentslikeuscangetinvolvedinthematter.Weknowbygeneralobservationfromourlocalitythatinthecaseofaninefficientgarbagemanagement,notonlythepeoplebutanimalsalsosufferfromserioushealthissues.Weknowofcasesofanimalslikedogsandcowsinsearchoffoodendingupeatingplasticwastedumpedontheroadsleadingtotheirdeath.Themethodofdisposingthegarbageisalsoamajorconcerninourstudyaswerealizeitisalsoimportant.Simpledumpingofcertainwastepollutesthesoilwhileburningofwastecreatesairpollution.Itisthusnecessarytofindabetterway.Asapartofcontributingtosolvingtheissue,weintendtoworktowardscreatingawarenessamongthepeopleaboutgarbagemanagementintermsofsegregatingthewaste,tomakeasquareshapedclosedboxtypeareawherepeoplecanthrowtheirgarbageandalsoconversewiththemunicipalauthoritiestoinitiateanefficientmanagementsystem.

placeswithinourcommunity.Weconductedanoralsurveywithresidentsinindividualdwellings,anapartmentcomplex,retailshops,arestaurant,aclub,andafactory–representingdiverserequirements.Wemadedirectobservationoftheplace,itslakes,drains,theninterviewedtheGramPanchayatOfficer.Ourquestionswereaimedatknowingthesourceofwaterfordifferentneeds,thelevelofsatisfactionoftheresidents,theeffectontheenvironment,andhowthesituationhaschangedwithtime.Theneedforwaterismetthroughprivateborewellsorprivatetankers.Waterintwosmalllakesintheregionisusedforirrigationattimes.Packagedmineralwateristhemainsourceofdrinkingwater.Peopleweresatisfiedwiththequantityandqualityofwater,eventhoughtheyhavetospendextraforpackageddrinkingwater.Basedontheexperientiallearningoftheold-timeresidentsoftheplace,wegottoknowthelevelofwaterinborewellhasdroppedby1000feetormore;peoplewereworried.Rainwaterharvesting.watertreatment,andre-useofwateraredoneminimally.Intheabsenceofadrainagesystem,someofthestormwaterdrainsrunningalongresidentialstreetswerecloggedandsmelling.Wemaynotabletodependongroundwaterforlong,thoughnotallpeopleareaware.TheGovernmentthinksKaveriwaterisasolution,thoughonlytimewilltell.

Themainsourceofwaterfortheseareasarebore-wellsandBWSSB(BengaluruWaterSupplyandSewerageBoard).Wehavewitnessedmanyfightsandargumentsduetoshortageofwatersupply,whichcreatessocialstressamongtheresidents.Thevariationsingroundwatertableandcontaminationofwaterduetomixingofsewageanddrinkingwaterarethemaincausesofwatershortage.Thisresultsinserioushealthissuesandpollutestheenvironment.Thisdistractsthelifeofthepeople.Forourresearch,wesurveyedthepublicinboththeareas.WemetthescientistMr.ARShivKumarwhohasbeenusingrainwaterharvestingasasourceforhisdailyactivitiesfor23years.Afewchangesthatneedtotakeplaceinourareasareimprovementofpipelinesystem,regularcheckingofbothsewageanddrinkingwaterpipelines,andpreventingleakagesinpipelines.Wecreatedawarenessamongthepeopletoinstallrainwaterharvestingintheirhousesandapartments.Wecametoknowthatwiseusageofwaterwillleadtosustainabledevelopmentandkeepingourenvironmentcleanmakesushappyandhealthy.

OurschoolisinaruralpartofNorthBengaluru.Manychildrencommutetoschoolandbackontwo-wheelers.Weobservedsometeachers,parentsandstudentsnotwearinghelmetswhiletravelingontwo-wheelers.Thisisdangerousandcouldleadtolossoflifeandlimbincaseofanyaccident.Weinsistedtothemothers,totietheirkidsandthemselvesatthewaistusingtheirshawltoincreasesafety.Creatingawarenesstowearhelmetfortheriderandpavilionridersisveryimportant.Safetyismoreimportantthanluxuryofridingatwo-wheeler.Inthisproject,wetriedtofindouthowmanyparentsaredroppingchildrenoffattheschoolgatesontwo-wheelers.Howmanyagreethatitistheirdutytowearahelmet?Wepreparedpamphletswithamessageurgingparentstouseahelmet.Inourschoolassembly,wespokeaboutimportanceofwearinghelmets.Also,weapproachedourschoolmanagementtohaveapolicyandinsisttheparentstodroporpickupstudentswithhelmetsonlyandtoprovidearacktokeepstudentshelmets.Weinterviewedthetrafficinspectorandcollectedinformationaboutthemishapshappeningfornotwearinghelmets.Wealsovideographedchildrengoingwithparentswithoutwearinghelmets.Wehavesubmittedallthedatacollectedinourresearch.Whenweconsolidatedourresearch,weunderstoodhowmuch

knowtheirdifficultiesaftertheresearch.
