The International Federation for Home Economics
is the only worldwide organisation concerned with
Home Economics and Consumer Studies.
It was founded in 1908 to serve as a platform for
international exchange within the fi eld of Home
Economics.

What does IFHE offer?
From the beginning, convening international
Congresses has been a major activity of IFHE.
They provide an international Home Economics
forum whereby participants share knowledge and
experiences, discuss issues of common concern,
and explore the many challenges facing the
Home Economics profession.

for participants to develop and extend their
professional networks and partners with those
from other countries, with many of these
relationships resulting in life-long friendships.

Programme Committees
IFHE is an International Non-Governmental Organisation
(INGO), having consultative status with the United Nations
(ECOSOC, FAO, UNESCO, UNICEF) and with the Council of
Europe.
IFHE involvement at the UN headquaters in New York, at
the UN Offices in Geneva, Paris, Rome and Vienna and the
Council of Europe in Strasbourg has steadily increased.
In each location IFHE Representatives serve as volunteers
to represent IFHE interests as an INGO. Their activities
are concerned primarily with social and educational
programmes related to the well-being of the family and
its members (women, children, youth, age) through the
Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), UNESCO, and
UNICEF and through the food and nutrition programmes
of FAO.
Role
• Representing IFHE at different UN Conferences, INGO Meetings or Conferences
• Presenting statements on behalf of IFHE
• Working together with other INGOs on statements
• Preparing reports for IFHE concerning UN Conferences and INGOs’ work
Relation with the UN and UN Agencies

IFHE and its members are involved in projects in all
areas of Home Economics as they are:
• The academic discipline to educate new scholars, to conduct research and to create new knowledge
• The curriculum area that facilitates students to discover and further develop their own resources and capabilities
• The arena for everyday living in households, families and communities for developing human growth potential and human necessities and meeting basic needs
Important topics of projects in the field of Home
Economics are: education in resource management,
food security, eradicating poverty, improving maternal
health, supporting sustainable development and
consumption.
