S P O N S O R E D S E C T I O N K AT H I M E R I N I l S3SATURDAY - SUNDAY, MARCH 17-18, 2018

Stefanos Gialamas, Ph.D.Mary-Ann Augoustatos, M.Ed

Today, more than ever, academic insti-tutions need to identify ways to inspiretheir students to acquire skills and com-petencies that are essential for becom-ing critical thinkers and decision-mak-ers. Therefore, there is a need for a newtrajectory in the teaching and learningat the K-12 environment. This trajectoryneeds innovation, creativity and free-dom from the fear of failing. Studentsmust be the driving force for such learn-ing and Educators the guiding energy.

One of the most significant obsta-cles K-12 Educators are facing is thatstudents have difficulty identifying thereal-world application of the conceptsthey are learning, or how these con-cepts and applications are relevant totheir interests and studies. “When amI ever going to use this?” or “Whocares? In the real world, I can Googleanything I need.” Versions of this sen-timent have echoed through the wallsof classrooms for years. This is simplybecause students so often do not ap-preciate or become excited by some-thing they do not see as relevant andmeaningful in their potential careersand daily lives. Thus, the way an aca-demic institution designs its curricu-lum and teaching methodology is whatmakes the difference in students’ learn-ing and ultimately in their lives.

In order to provide students with acomprehensive learning experience, anew educational paradigm was devel-oped, the Global Morfosis Paradigm(gMp), which has been part of the ACSAthens educational paradigm for overa decade. Global Morfosis Paradigm(gMp) is an authentic, unbounded, andexciting educational paradigm - prepar-ing students for a complex and unpre-dictable future. During its decade-longimplementation, the gMp philosophyhas been evaluated and modified manytimes to meet diverse student needsworldwide (www.g-morfosis.gr).

One of the most visible manifesta-tions of the gMp is the Incubator of Stu-dents’ Creative Ideas (ISCI), which is astudent-centered, student-led, student-run, project-based learning initiative, using the design thinking process topromote, support and guide students’creative ideas in all disciplines. Morespecifically, the ISCI designs, facilitates, organizes and supports innovative stu-dent projects. Students take control oftheir own learning by having the op-portunity to select what they want tolearn, how they want to learn it, and ul-timately decide in what way they wishto apply the knowledge they have ac-quired in order to produce somethingmeaningful for themselves and theircommunity. The ISCI is housed in theACS Athens Learning Commons wherestudents have access to a number of ed-ucators, including a librarian and a leadresearcher, as well as state-of-the-artfacilities that consist of a media studio, math studio and writing studio.

The ISCI was established in line withthe ACS Athens vision “Empoweringindividuals to transform the world asarchitects of their own learning.” TheISCI Council consists of seven students(Mehin Abbasova, Marilina Bitsikas,Asterios Dougalis, George Dougalis,Anastasia Nikolaidi, Elina Pipa andPantelis Sfinias) who spent last sum-mer designing, planning, organizing, researching and formulating the ISCI.They designed the facility to housesuch learning, they wrote a policy man-

ual to clarify its operations and finallythey began planning to host eventsthroughout the academic year and tovisit other educational institutions. Inaddition, the ISCI Council makes itselfavailable to guide and support stu-dents with their own projects in theincubator space.

In September 2017, the ISCI Councilvisited the “IdeaLab” of Hisar Schoolin Istanbul, Turkey, where ideas wereexchanged and learning throughworkshops took place. This collabo-rative experience resulted in the es-tablishment of the ISCI Summit whichwas inaugurated at ACS Athens in De-cember 2017.

During the two days of the Inaugu-ral ISCI Summit, students engaged instudent-led workshops on the Ar-duino Programming Language, Fu-

sion 360, Scratch, Python, Adobe, An-cient Greek Ethics, Fashion Designand Creative Writing. Four hundredACS Athens Elementary, MiddleSchool and Academy students at-tended the sessions.

Presently, the ISCI is hostingworkshops which are being men-tored by a parent volunteer, whoseexpertise is in programming, for stu-dents wishing to learn about building3D Printers, making models usingSCAD and Fusion360, using codingsoftware such as Repetier, CURA andSlic3r, and learning Arduino.

In addition, ACS Athens students(ages 6-17) are engaged in projectsthat include creating simple tele-scopes, robots, computer games andfashion lines. There are studentsworking on an 8-bit computer with

wiring and logic gates and others whoare advancing their passion for biol-ogy by working on projects such ascreating nurturing ecosystems andresearching behaviors of cancer cells.Fifth graders are currently workingon 3D models of cities, a video of theancient Athens vs. ancient Sparta con-flict (mostly based on the Pelopon-nesian Wars), comic books, children’sbooks and tutorial presentations onhow to play their favorite games.

The Learning Theory of Construc-tionism, developed by Seymour Pa-pert, suggests that problem-basedlearning experiences allow studentsto make meaning of learning con-cepts that are reinforced throughtheir own physical or virtual cre-ations. Learners are challenged tosolve a problem and as a result, de-

velop/create /model/imagine theirown unique solution.[1] The Incuba-tor of Students’ Creative Ideas allowsstudents to construct learning inways that are meaningful.

Therefore, ISCI fosters learning col-laborations for creative endeavors andestablishes a culture for students’ ca-pacity for innovation. As John Deweystates, “[t]he self is not somethingready-made, but something in contin-uous formation through choice of ac-tion;”[2] for this reason, weshould “[g]ive the pupils somethingto do, not something to learn; and thedoing is of such a nature as to demandthinking; learning naturally re-sults.”[3]
