IDEM 19 Stanjel (Slovenia) Connecting/Connectivity Sept 28-‐Oct 4 2014
IDEM is an international workshop for students, their teachers and professionals. It takes a week. So far there have been 18 workshops, since 1985, with numerous design schools from Europe and beyond. The intercultural exchange from the mixed working groups were a guarantee for surprising results, always to be shown at the last day of the workshop week. The only rule for the teachers is not to work with their own students, and to gently guide the process towards a result. An average IDEM brings 50 people together, that will work in teams of 4-‐7 people, a mix from different schools.
![Page 3: International Design Educational Meeting 2014](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062401/5875fbb61a28ab31648bcc97/html5/thumbnails/3.jpg)
Design 2.0 After the success of working with intercultural groups, we want to stimulate the true interdisciplinary processes, and step towards the changes in design, by bringing in the design teams non-‐design related students and specialists and even the people we design for, in order to create wide stimuli for design thinking, reframing and solving problems, within the context in all its aspects. This also means that IDEM has to prepare and organise the research contexts for speeding up the process and to make it possible for the design teams to come with relevant answers at the end of the workshop week.
IDEM dynamics and creative power A successful method for stimulating the creative power is the spontaneous and joyful approach of the workshop week: the special location, the mind opening lectures, the inspirational visits, and the surprising artistic events at evenings. IDEM also uses the cooking of ‘national dishes’ for each other as a quick way of making people get together in friendship and work without competition. It is a week with a lot of laughing and hard work going on.
Regional and BIO-‐related Being based in the village of Stanjel in the Karst region, this edition of IDEM will start from the themes given by the BIO 50 Design Biennial. Especially Hidden Crafts and Nanotourism are the themes that relate to this rural location and can be researched in the flesh. The Stanjel village and the Karst region can be taken as a case by the participants.
ConnectivityIDEM sees the interaction between location, users, designers and other specialists as a intriguing and the logical ‘next step’ in design to connect and solve problems. That is why the IDEM-‐subtitle is Connectivty and the participants envolved will be the Connectors.
Project duration September 28-‐October 4 2014. The results will be shown at the end of the workshop week, October 3rd, at Stanjel, and later transported to Ljubljana for exhibition, during the BIO (Biennial of Design). That location and time slot still has to be decided.

The theme: connecting/connectivity
Each IDEM is based on initiatives of professors from European design schools to set up a one week workshop, starting from contemporary design issues, thus stimulating the creative interaction of students and professors. Certainly the choice for unique locations for these international workshops is having its importance. The cultural heritage is one of the important grounds for developing valuable innovative design, that is embedded in the local human context.
This story continues here to the present day: the future site of the old city of Štanjel. Situated on a porous limestone hill, Štanjel is surrounded by endless rows of vineyards that produce dark ruby-‐red Teran wine. To accommodate participants from Europe and overseas, the organizers have selected a unique location that can accommodate 50 -‐ 70 participants and assure their basic working conditions and infrastructure.
The conceptual point of departure is Connectivity/Connecting We want to be connected to the fundamental vision and mission of design, to the needs of local people and culture, to the Karst environment and commerce. IDEM Karst is harmonized with BIO 50, the current 24th Biennial of Design in Ljubljana and it’s points of departure: 'to embraces the opportunity to build upon its own tradition and history, advancing into an experimental, collaborative territory where design is employed and implemented as a tool to question and transform ideas about industrial production, public and private space, and pre-‐established systems and networks'.
![Page 5: International Design Educational Meeting 2014](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062401/5875fbb61a28ab31648bcc97/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
Connectivity: being connected to the needs of local people Our past design practice has been successfully connected to end users, either customers or business or the public sector, considering technology (feasibility), business (viability) and human values (usability, desirability). IDEM now can act as a paragon of collaborative work with the local community, and build value-‐added products and services branded with local identity.
![Page 6: International Design Educational Meeting 2014](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062401/5875fbb61a28ab31648bcc97/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
Natural assets of the Karst region Viticulture, culinary arts, tourism, craft and trade on the one hand, and the presence of stone on the other, together constitute the image of Karst villages, integrated into AgriTourism, developed out of small traditional family farm homes with modern standard accommodations all facing charming courtyards, decorated with rich vegetation and flowers. These destinations offer trekking, biking, and just wandering around the unique landscape. Stone cutting is only one of the potential points of departure for creative research and design as a catalyst of new possibilities for local commerce. And last but not least: the richness of the historical heritage of the Karst.
![Page 7: International Design Educational Meeting 2014](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062401/5875fbb61a28ab31648bcc97/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Potential assets of Karst tourism Tourist information is on display in site. But also the immediate vicinity of nearby territories with similar characteristics in Sežana (Stud Farm Lipica breeds Lipizzaner the world famous white horses), Komen (borough in charge of Štanjel), Divača (Schckyanske Caves with stalagtites, stalagmites limestone formations and canyon with unterdground river), Devin (Italian site close to the Adratic sea, and Postojna (Postojna Cave: the most famous of its kind in the world, The famous ancient Castel attached to the giant arch of a cave, the settlement of the medieval Knight Erasmus)… Tourist brochures with the picturesque offers of Karst wanders invite us to make our starting point for trekking, wandering, biking, enjoying. Let’s make “SWOT” analysis and define the design tasks and development strategies for the region, setting common denominators and branding for tourism, trade and services. Ecological awareness and sustainability makes way of life in the Karst, focused on preservation of the natural and cultural heritage, and all interests of the user, space/environment and furniture in a broader sense of meaning.

The workshop We work daily in small international groups (4-‐6 students with 2 teachers) from 9h until 17h with a lunch break at 13h. The practical organization of the separate groups is in the hands of the different teams of teachers. From every ID-‐department we expect at least 6 participants. A preference is given to 4 students and 2 design-‐educators. The students study 'design' in any form. (from technical to artistic contexts), and this time we will try to make true multidisciplinary groups by inviting schools out of the design context. We think this will fire up the creativity and the innovative thinking.
Every design-‐educator is asked to give guidance as a practical designer, working with a colleague and to supervise a mixed group of students, as if it were a small design studio: discussing and researching the theme, stimulate the transformation in ideas and to prepare a proposal for exhibition. By doing so both students and educators can experience the different cultural, disciplinary and methodical approaches. The group will present their results in a 'ad hoc' presentation/exhibition on the last day of the seminar. The results will then be transported to Ljubljana to be exhibited in the BIO-‐50 design biennial.
We will provide a temporal design atelier in Stanjel with handtools, small machinery, a large-‐format printer (A1), and a small 3D-‐printer.
Lectures We also ask our colleague-‐professors and professionals to prepare a short lecture/presentation introduction/reflection of some 15 minutes related to the theme of 'Connecting-‐Connector or 'Design 2.0'.
The visit to the famous world known Ljubljana Biennial of Industrial Design curated by Jan Boelen (a former IDEM participant) and Maja Vardjan is a part of the program of the 19th IDEM Karst Connectivity Workshop. The participants will visit Ljubljana and 24rd BIO and its 50st anniversary by bus on Tuesday September 30th. The BIO visit will be guided by MAO/BIO curators to several sites starting at the headquarters MAO (Museum of Architecture and design). The participants will have a chance to visit Ljubljana the Capital of Slovenia. By the way The Capital is considered as a currant top tourist destination selected by American Press for 2014 and yet has been awarded as the Most Green City of Europe 2014.
During the planning the 19th IDEM KARST we were in touch with a number of leading local representatives of culture, design, business, trade and local management. We keep these contacts intensive in order to manage one off the most memorable IDEMs ever, interacting and connecting with the local contexts.

Practical information
The workshop will take place in the very special Slovenian village Stanjel, located in the Karst region, close to the Italian border.
The workshop is held from Sunday 28/9 until Saturday 4/10.
Let us know if you are arriving earlier in Stanjel, we can make an arrangments for you, at a fair price. We organizers arrive on Thursday 26/9 to prepare the workshop.
Štanjel in the Karst The Karst is the vast plateau situated in the hinterland of the Adriatic Sea. It rises above the Gulf of Trieste, the lowland of the Friuli Venice Julia Region, the Vipava valley and Slovene Istria. The main part of the Karst region is made of limestone and some dolomites, which is an impermeable stone. The land is quite dry because the water tends to disappear into the ground. The underground therefor hides enormous amounts of water, rivers, tunnels and (famous) caves. Rivers, ponds and lakes can disappear and then resurface in the Karst’s porous limestone through sinkholes and funnels, often resulting in underground caverns like the caves at Škocjan. Along with caves, the Karst is rich in olives, ruby-‐red Teran wine, pršut, old stone churches and red-‐tiled roofs. Most of the rather flat land is covered with woods, mostly Austrian pine and commons, such as sumach bushes and juniper trees. The local climate is a mixture of Mediterranean and continental features, with hot summers.
Štanjel is renowned for its medieval settlement with ancient origins and gained its name after the local patron St. Daniel. The favourable location on the hill called Turn made it possible for people to settle since ancient history, however the castle situated on it was given its finishing touch by the Cobenzl Counts in the 17th century. In the mid-‐15th century they already build the curh of St. Daniel as their family tomb and at the end of that century they build the surrounding houses, and the castle with a huge wall to protect the site against the Turkish invaders.
![Page 11: International Design Educational Meeting 2014](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062401/5875fbb61a28ab31648bcc97/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
The first houses outside the fortified village were not build until the 19th century. During the Second World War the castle was severely damaged and restauration was needed. Today the Kobdilj Tower houses a gallery and it is a popular place for weddings. The Karts House treasures the tales of how families once lived in the area.
Štanjel is so close to Venice that you would not dare to skip a visit to this year’s World Famous Venice Architectural Biennial.
The Ferrari garden, named after its owner doctor Ferrari from Trieste, was designed by the Art Nouveau architect Max Fabiani at the beginning of the 20th century. Its unique feature is the pool with a typical Vienna bridge, collecting rainwater running into an aquaduct. Also the Miramonti Hotel and the Communal House were designed by Max Fabiani.

Your stay: the apartments
Houses and studios are all located in the medieval centre of the little town and can be rented by singular artists, academies, universities, associations and groups. The apartments/houses contain in general 2-‐5 rooms, a common room, a simple equipped kitchen and a bathroom. Some are equipped with a complete kitchen. All of them are basic but fine. The total amount of people that can be housed is about 50. We take the subscriptions in order of payment: who pays first is on the list. In case there are more participants we can arrange for hotel accommodation nearby. Participants will be notified.
Bring your own towels & washing stuff, and bedding sheets (you can also hire towels and sheets) or a sleeping bag.
We would advise to check the KARST House – proposals for renewal of old houses in http://www.zvkds.si/media/images/publications/PRIROCNIK_KRASKA_HISA.pdf. Unfortunately it is available in Slovenian language only. But its rich visual language explaining content and the complexity of research study done by a number of interdisciplinary specialists.
The information is illustrated by a number of snap shots of the Štanjel, Karst and the wider region that were taken during my frequent biking and other visits to beloved place.
Breakfast You will be given fresh bread and ingredients, coffee, milk, etc. every morning to have breakfast in your own apartment. That also means you will have to do the dishes
The climate In October the weather can be still warm during daytime, and cool at nights with temperatures ranging from 10 to 25 degrees. It is advisable to bring a sweater and (rain)jacket for the evenings, and a pair of solid shoes in case of excursions.
![Page 13: International Design Educational Meeting 2014](https://reader036.fdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022062401/5875fbb61a28ab31648bcc97/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
yourself, in you apartments.
Lunch We will have our lunches and dinners in restaurant, situated in the Grad, the Castle. The chef will cook typical Slovene dishes, we know from experience are surprisingly succulent.
Dinner and national parties Usually IDEM participant prepare the food for dinners as a part of the national parties at evening. Cooking or at least food is a substantial ingredient in IDEM. It is used to present culture in friendship. But it takes a huge time, so this time the chef will be doing the cooking. This will give us the opportunity to put more time and focus in the workshops. However you can provide the chef with recipes to give a national flavour to the dinners. Maybe you should focus on a typical dessert and some of your local drinks. Please send these recipes in advance to negotiate with the chef. Anyway you are expected to 'design' the party afterwards with music, images of country and school, video, drawing, play,... whatever you want. Prepare at home and bring your stuff or improvise as we did in Eisenerz. Each evening two schools have to work together for the party, so have fun!
Special diet/vegetarian Please indicate on your participation form. We will try to find solutions for you.
Don't forget your personal medication.

Goodies bag Typical food & drinks from your country, to use during country dinners.
Memories If you were in previous IDEMs, please bring videos and photos for the first evening.
1252grs of material A bottle of gin for instance weighs exactly 1252 grs. IDEM-‐participants tend to move a lot of their local spirituals for use during the national parties. This time we would like to ask each of you replacing the bottle of liquor and to bring 1252 grs of material that can be used in the workshop for creating, design thinking, experimenting or whatever. Bring that Lego technic, cardboard, rope, chopsticks, out of order or obsolete electronics that is waiting to be thrown away (old mp3-‐player, radio, phone, tablet, computer, game, speakers, broken tools, electric motors, shaver ,...) toys or whatever mistake-‐buys, and crazy things that may stimulate one's inspiration and creativity. We will make a picture of each 'gift', that finally is available for (re)use and for the creative process of the workshop, to put on the IDEM website.
