It is hard to believe that the year has once again flown by and it’s time to start thinking about the fall convention! But first, allow me the privilege of celebrating our successful spring Mega Demo! Let me take this opportunity to personally thank our Board of Directors and many, many others that have been so supportive and really worked hard to make it such a great meeting. The manufacturers, distributors, Independent Reps, Engineers, Contractors and NC State University that donated time and materials were invaluable in making it happen, and we couldn’t have done it without them. Hayes Thompson really deserves special recognition, so on behalf of the chapter I would like let you know just how much we all appreciate the hours you put in making it happen. I believe we had a record breaking attendance, I thank each and every one of you that attended for coming out and supporting the Chapter, learning a few things, enjoying some networking / camaraderie and I hope you found it as fun and informative as I did. For 2013, Past President Jeff Molby led us to the ICRI’s second highest award, the Outstanding Chapter of the Year, which was presented at the Spring National ICRI Conference, I’m sure you’ll agree it’s nice to be recognized by the home office and that patch will join the long line of others on our banner and carry on the tradition of excellence this chapter was founded on. We are making the BOD nominations form available year round on our website, so if you would like to get your name on the ballot. We are always interested in suggestions for our annual public service project and themes or areas of interest for our conferences, don’t hesitate to contact any board member with your thoughts. 2014 Fall Conference: We’re going back to Charleston, SC for “Concrete Repairs in the Marine Environment”, a topic we have never covered before and it’s sparked considerable interest, so mark your calendar for October 16-18, 2014; our headquarters hotel will be the beautiful Courtyard by Marriott at Mt. Pleasant, home of their famous fried chicken, seafood buffet and BBQ, and our golf tournament will be about 10 minutes away at the Dunes West Golf Club. As always, I encourage us all to engage the new members of our industry ask them to join the ICRI, no matter where you may encounter them. 2014 MEGA-DEMO WAS BIG... Many thanks to all who attended, contributed or presented at the 2014 ICRI Carolinas’s Mega Demo held May 21-22 in Raleigh at the NCSU Beef Education Unit and the Constructed Facilities Lab (CFL). Both facilities were outstanding and the attendance of 138 attendees suggested the theme “Repair: Innovative Technologies and Collaborative Solutions” had plenty of meat.

Part of the 138 attendees that crowded into the Mega-Demo

No Bull!

Thanks to our outstanding line-up of speakers for donating their time and expertise:

ICRI Carolinas Chapter is pleased to announce it has chosen its annual service project for 2014. The completion of an annual service project is an integral part of our chapter’s rating from ICRI National, but more importantly is a way we can provide a service to people in need. This year we will be providing labor and material to install a new concrete slab foundation and floor system for a storage shed at Transitions LifeCare (founded as Hospice of Wake County in 1979) in Raleigh, NC. Transitions LifeCare provides physical, emotional and spiritual

care to those living with an advanced illness, their caregivers, and those who have lost a loved one regardless of age, race, religion, or financial circumstances. As they are a non-profit organization, they rely heavily on donations to provide vital services to people in need. We will perform the project on September 26th, 2014. Please put this date on your calendar and take one day to volunteer or help by donating some materials. Contact the Co-Chairmen of the Service Project Committee Bruce Stoerkel ([email protected]) or Ben Smith ( [email protected]) to help. We need labor, equipment and product. THANKS!!

HELP WANTED: SERVICE PROJECT ANNOUNCEMENT

As many of you are aware, ICRI has added a new concrete surface profile chip. It is the CSP #10 chip, which shows a more aggressive profile than the previous chips. As many of us already have a set of 9 chips, we really don’t want to buy an entire new set of ten. You can purchase single CSP #10 chips on the ICRI website (www.ICRI.org) for $5/member or $7/non-member. This is a must purchase for concrete repair professionals and we’ve made it easy for you to complete your set by adding only the #10 chip. If you don’t have a set, you may purchase a new complete set of 10 at the website, also.

In addition, the chapter has nine of the new #10 chips in its possession and if you need one, contact Kelly Andrews and reserve one or pick one up at the Fall meeting ($4.00, no tax and

you can pick it up at the Fall Conference.) If you need it now, call Kelly and work out shipping.

2014 CHAPTER PROJECT OF THE YEAR COMPETITIOn OPEnS

It is time; competition for the Carolina Chapter’s annual Project of the Year is officially open with rules and a simplified application on the chapter website. Deadline for submission is September 12, 2014.

Everything is on-line on the Chapter website at www.icricarolinas.org/poy.html

In an effort to increase project submissions to our annual Project of the Year Award program we have posted a more streamlined option for submitting. Please note that this format is NOT able to be used for submitting to the National ICRI. The National PoY submission deadline is May and our Chapter deadline is September. If you are submitting a project to National in May you can simple submit a copy of that to us by our deadline. Should your project completion deadline miss the National you may utilize our formatted template as part of your National submittal to reduce duplication. Please follow the link to the National ICRI website for updated rules and information.

This Express format is a two part process, Part A allows for providing the general project information through a series of text fields and drop down menus. To reduce the amount of typing you will now use a series of check boxes for highlighting Material Technology, Investigation Methods and Surface Preparation Methods. Simply click and choose!

The only “storyline” typing required is the Abstract section in which you will give a 500 word maximum overview of the project. The last section is a 300 word maximum “What Makes This Project a Winner” section.

The second document is Part B is just for your pictures. On the very first page is a written set of instructions for you to follow. You are free to submit up to 10 photos on the preset 6 pages.

That is it! Part A consists of 3 pages of simple information and Part B is just inserting your photographs. Download the two documents from the web, fill them out, save them, type us an email, attach the documents and your submission is complete! It is our hope that this new simplified method will increase participation and allow you to highlight your projects.

All POY applications (written or electronic) or questions about the process should be directed to:
