P A T H W A Y T O Y O U R U M D E G R E EConditional Admission is for students who want to enroll in a UM bachelor degree program but do not meet the minimum requirement for Full Admission/UP Admissions or do not have an English language test score. Students begin their studies at the English Language Institute (ELI) for intensive academic training.Requirements for Conditional Admission: 1. Complete an International Undergraduate Application. 2. Submit a $36 non-refundable application fee. 3. Submit official academic records showing a 2.5 GPA or higher. 4. Submit a copy of your passport.

The University of Montana’s UP Program provides a clear pathway for international students seeking an undergraduate degree but require additional preparation in the areas of English language proficiency, study skills, and content knowledge preparation in their chosen discipline. All courses taken in the program are credit-bearing and by the end of the first year students will be prepared to succeed in the remainder of their undergraduate program.Requirements for UP Admission: 1. Evidence of sufficient proficiency in one of the following English tests: • TOEFL = 52-69 iBT • TOEFL = 470 – 524 PBT • IELTS = 5.0 – 5.5 bandwidth • MELAB = 62 – 732. Academic transcripts showing equivalent of a 2.5 GPA.

Students who have met the English proficiency and academic requirements may begin their degree program at UM. Fully admitted students can pursue a full-degree course load.

Requirements for Full Admission:

1. Complete the International Undergraduate Application. 2. Submit the $36 application fee. 3. Submit a financial statement that covers one year of your costs at UM. 4. Submit an English language proficiency test score from one of the following: • TOEFL = 70 iBT higher • TOEFL = 525 PBT or higher • IELTS = 6.0 or higher • MELAB = 74 or higher 5. Submit official educational credentials. (Freshmen must have a 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale.

Transfer students with credits from another college or university must have a 2.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. UM Enrollment Services-Admissions will determine a GPA if one is not available on a student’s transcript.)

International Students Support NetworkOffice of Career Services provides quality educational, career and life-planning services to help students and alumni achieve their personal and professional goals. Students may visit this office throughout their academic careers and take advantage of the services they provide.

Foreign Student & Scholar Services is the office that provides a wealth of services for international students. These include pre-arrival assistance, airport pick-up, personal advising, orientation and interpretation of immigration laws. In addition, they coordinate cultural activities, field trips, a community hospitality program, as well as the annual International Culture & Food Festival.

The Missoula International Friendship Program promotes global awareness and friendship between international students at UM and the greater Missoula community using “friendship matches” arranged between the University and local community members. Throughout the friendship match, community members and international students learn about one another’s culture while sharing leisure and family activities.

Academic English Courses assists international students at UM whose proficiency is determined by examination to be insufficient for mainstream UM college classrooms or whose TOEFL scores range between 61 and 90. They are placed in academic support courses (EASL) directed by the Linguistics Program.

The International House, or I-House, is the center for intercultural activities and programs. International students, scholars, campus and community groups use the I-House for celebrations, social gatherings, meetings, cultural festivals or to just relax.

UN Council includes the International Student Association and various nationality/regional associations which plan a number of social and academic events for international students. Current Nationality Clubs include:

HousingThe UM campus is home to nine on-campus residence halls that provide quick and easy access to classes. Each unique residence hall offers a variety of living options – single rooms, double rooms, triple rooms, three-person pods and four-person suites as well as one all-female hall, one all-male hall, and seven co-ed halls. Some halls feature Living Learning Communities, which offer unique residential experiences by merging classroom learning with students’ out-of-class experiences. Students with a common academic or social interests will live together on the same floor or wing of the residence hall, allowing the community to have focused programs and a shared interest amongst members in a specific topic area. Community options include Chemistry, Outdoor Recreation, Global Leadership Initiative, Honors and Intercultural. UM also offers furnished two and three-bedroom apartments within close walking distance to campus. Apartments have a common living space with a shared kitchen, living room and bathroom between roommates. These apartments are for single students with 60 or more credits.

DiningWhen it comes to dining, you don’t have to go far to get great food. In addition to a cafeteria that offers a full range of options including vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free, UM is home to a food court with six vendors, a Pizza Hut, The Corner Store – a grocery store and food court, four coffee shops, and two locations of the Jus Chill’n coffee and smoothie bar.

Assistantships, Scholarships and FellowshipsIndividual graduate programs at University of Montana may award teaching assistantships, research assistantships or fellowships to eligible graduate students.

Graduate AssistantshipsIndividual graduate programs award teaching and research assistantships to graduate students. Contact your program if you have any questions about these types of awards. Most programs do not award teaching and research assistantships to all graduate students.

Teaching Assistantships are available in most graduate programs. Students can be awarded teaching assistantships either for one semester or for two semesters. The minimum stipend (2 semesters) for a teaching assistantship from the Graduate School is $9,000. All teaching assistantships come with a tuition waiver. Check program descriptions for exact amounts.

Research Assistantships may be awarded either for one semester or two semesters. Some research assistantships come with a tuition waiver. Research assistants must hold a bachelor’s degree, be admitted to the Graduate School in a degree program and be register for 9 credits each semester.

Fellowships and ScholarshipsThe Graduate School awards up to 3 fellowship and approximately 20 scholarships annually. Only graduate students currently accepted for degree programs are eligible to apply. Program faculty nominate students for these scholarships. The Graduate School sends out a call for nominations to graduate students near the end of Fall semester for awards to be given the next academic year.

Graduate Admission Procedures and RequirementsInternational students should submit application materials at least six months before the term they wish to enter. For the exact deadline date for applying to a particular program you should check the department website. Typically fall term begins the fourth week of August, spring term the fourth week of January, and summer term the third week of May. We encourage applicants to apply early in order to obtain a student visa and arrange for housing and travel to the United States.

Admission Procedures:• Complete an Application for Graduate Admission at www.umt.edu/grad• Submit a $60 application fee.• Submit a copy of your passport.• Submit required official documents to the Graduate School.

General Admission Requirements:Admission requirements vary from department to department so students are encouraged to view the specific requirements at the Graduate School website. In general, every graduate program requires the following items:

• Official GRE or GMAT scores.• Official education credentials or transcripts showing the equivalent of a U.S. baccalaureate degree from an

accredited institution.• Official English language proficiency score report showing one of the following:

TOEFL = 92iBTor IELTS = 7.0 or MELAB = 83• Three letters of recommendation.• A current resume or Curriculum Vitae.• A letter of intent.

UM students gain real-world experience to launch careers with top companies or as entrepreneurs.

Work with industry leaders to blaze your own trail in business. Promote Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival through a social media campaign or host a local talent competition through the Entertainment Management Program. Develop and refine your own business plan and compete for $10,000 in start up capital. Join one of 150 student groups to enrich your education and network outside the classroom. Learn how big data informs not only science and research, but government, the private sector and international development.

With a new lab, UM continues to innovate in the field of biomechanics

UM’s 3,000-square-foot biomechanics laboratory in the Phyllis J. Washington Education Center studies the limits of human physical abilities. It features cutting-edge equipment that allows UM researchers and students to conduct experiments and take measurements few other facilities in the U.S. can match.

Enter the Pre-Medical Sciences Program for robust advising and experiential learning opportunities to prime yourself for medical school.
