SIAM 2012: Showcase of an innovative Moroccan Agriculture

The 7th edition of the International Agriculture Show in Morocco was held from 25 to 29 April 2012 in the imperial city of Meknes. Placed under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the Show was inaugurated on Wednesday, April 25th by His Royal Highness the Prince Moulay Rachid.

This year’s theme “Research & Innovation” is in the heart of the agricultural professionals concerns as well as the plan “Maroc Vert”. This is an incentive and an enhancement of innovative activities for the presented sectors. This theme is closely related to the need for an on-going search for more sustainable and competitive agricultural practices in tune with current issues.

Within only seven editions, the SIAM has become the most important show of the sector in Africa. This seventh edition marks a new step forward in terms of organization, site development and layout as well as the offer presented by this year’s exhibitors. The SIAM clearly confirms its place in the international events calendar.

RESEARCH & INNOVATION

Research and innovation is a development driver for agri-cultural progress.

SIAM has sought to position itself as a true vehicle for development to promote new knowledge and technical innovations in the field of resource management, layout and use of space to manage environmental sustainability, the introduction of new technologies and competitive-ness in order to secure livelihoods.

The 5th Assizes of Agriculture, organized by the Ministry of Agricul-ture and Maritime Fisheries took place on Tuesday, April 24, 2012.

Canada, this Year’sHonorary Countrry

After Germany in 2010 and France in 2011, this seventh

edition Agriculture Show changes continent. The SIAM

welcomes Canada as this year’s special guest.

A “Canada Day” was held Thurs-

day, April 26 in presence of Mr.

Akhannouch Aziz, Minister of Agri-

culture and Maritime Fisheries as

well as Mr. RIitz Gerry, the Canadian Minister of Agricul-

ture. A bilateral agreement between Morocco and

Canada was signed on that occasion.

The SIAM generates $ 21 million of sales for Canada.

The Canadian agricultural industry estimates that its participation in the 7th edition of the In-ternational Agriculture Show in Morocco (SIAM 2012) will generate sales of approximately $ 21 million over the next 12 months.

As a reminder, a diverse group of 16 exhibitors, representing several agricultural sectors of Can-ada (potato, grain legumes, honey…) presented their products at the Canadian Pavilion.Innovative products, including animal genetic material, samples of designed and constructed greenhouses were also exposed.

Despite a difficult climate (drought), SIAM 2012 has been a peak year in terms of sales volume.

For the only Machinery Pole, 25% of annual turnover of its exhibitors was made during

the 5 days of the show.

An excellent year in 2012 in terms of visitors, with a peak of 230,000 entries for the single day

of Saturday April, 28th.

Opening the Official Inauguration Ceremony, His Royal Highness Prince Moulay Rachid handed Certificates and Distinctive Signs of Origin and Quality to four farm-ers and producers. Thus, His Royal Highness presented the award of Protected Geographical Indication “Fine Tafraout” to Ms. M’Hamedi Alaoui Ikram, President of the Economic Interest Group “Tadart N’louz” of the Souss-Massa-Draa.

Likewise, Prince Moulay Rachid awarded the Protected Geographical Indication “Boufeggous Dates” to the Region of Meknes-Tafilalet Belhassan to Mr. Abdellah Mohamed, President of the National Union of Associa-tions of dates Producers. Belkbir Mohamed, President of the Union of Associations of Beekeepers Region Tadla Azilal, received from His Royal Highness the Protected Geographical Indication “Honey Zagoum Tadla Azilal”. Finally, His Royal Highness Prince Mou-lay Rachid gave the Protected Geographical Indication “Dates Aziza Abouzid” from Figuig to Mr. Mustapha Abbas, President of the Association of the Agricultural Cooperative Al Massira, the Oriental Region.

Awards and Contests

His Majesty King Mohammed VI offered on Sunday, April 29 at Sahrij Souani (Meknes), a dinner in hon-our of the participants of the 7th International Agriculture Show in Morocco.

His Royal Highness Prince Moulay Rachid chaired the Awards Cere-mony. 51 winners, among the exhibitors and participants have distinguished themselves in various divisions of the SIAM 2012.

These trophies, which have crowned this great agricultural event, were awarded to professionals in the sector whose units were

distinguished in their fields by their innovation, advocacy and promotion of their products. By offering these awards, His Royal Highness Prince Moulay Rachid re-flects his interest as well as the one granted by His Majesty the King Mo-hammed VI to agricultural develop-

ment in the service of productive investment and sustain-able development. This is a strong signal to promote and modernize the sector and inspire it with a real momentum following a clear and integrated strategy as defined within the Plan “Maroc Vert”, the Govern-ments priority in the agricultural sector.
