since iAf began in 1994, annual surplus funds at the end of the season provide scholarships for nmC students. in 2018, you gave $6,000 to first generation students to participate in nmC’s global opportunities program in support of iAf’s mission and helping all eligible students have the chance to gain a global perspective as part of their education.
nmC is ranked 12th in the nation among community colleges for student participa-tion in short-term study abroad. Approxi-mately 60 nmC students participated in the most recent academic year faculty-led programs in Costa rica, india, indonesia, ireland and italy.

iAf’s history can be traced to 1952, when the leelanau Center for education
– whose own history dated back to 1929 – created the annual world Affairs Symposium. for a week each August, the campus of the leelanau school in glen Arbor came alive with lectures by authorities on foreign policy from government, academia and the news media. the natural beauty of the campus provided a relaxed setting for participants to engage in informal exploration of ideas and solutions to the world’s problems. for more than 40 years, attendees were drawn to the symposium by speakers who brought a spirit of intellectual vigor to the wooded beauty of northern michigan. As the series came to an end in 1992, Philip l. Cochran, who had served as coordinator for many years, envisioned a new organization to foster discussion of global issues in the community through monthly programs featuring national-level speakers.
the symposium successor would be known as the International Affairs forum. a partnership with Northwestern michigan College and the nmC foundation emerged, giving the iAf administrative support and a home for its programs at milliken Auditorium in the Dennos museum.
A number of talented, committed volunteers stepped forward to help. two of the founding members – dick grout and harry veeder – remain active in iAf today. the roster of board members who volunteered long years of service include helen milliken, gil bogley, marlis mann, betsy wilson, dave hunter, Phil thomas, rick straus, Tom Steffe, Sandy Seppala-Gyr, Dick Kennedy, Phil mikesell, Peg zachman, dick murray, ted curran, tom maguire grant Parsons and ryan wells. they have been critical to IaF’s success.
