[INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE] 1
Speaker: In the introduction video the IC engine was briefly described as a machine that took a liquid fuel, such as gasoline, and burned it to spin a shaft and propel the vehicle.
Speaker: Pistons and cylinders were defined as the components of the IC engine that allow this transformation of energy to occur.
Speaker: But how do the pistons and cylinders work together?
Speaker: This animation will answer this question and explain how mechanical power is generated, by presenting the construction of a simplified model of the internal combustion engine.
Speaker: To understand the function of the IC engine, it helps to begin with the piston.
Speaker: The piston is the part of the engine that contains the expanding gas created during the chemical reaction of combustion.
[INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE] 2
Speaker: Adjoined to the piston is the connecting rod.
Speaker: This rod transfers the energy from the piston to last main component of the system known as the crankshaft.
Speaker: The crankshaft spins and in the process outputs mechanical power from the engine to other systems in the vehicle.
Speaker: It is important to know that the crankshaft is designed in a certain way so that each piston and connecting rod will work together optimally.
Speaker: Which allows for the most power output possible.
[INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE] 3
Speaker: With the engine block in place, the cylinders are now shown holding each piston.
Speaker: The cylinder constrains the movement of the piston to the range of motion shown in the animation.
Speaker: At the top of each cylinder, the fuel would be injected and then burned to push the piston downward.
Speaker: Ultimately the piston and cylinder arrangement contains the exploding gas from the combustion process and transfers the energy to the mechanical output of the rotating crankshaft.
