4750 UNIT PLAN GUIDELINES for ART EDUCATION Sharyn Hyatt-Wade, MFA Your written unit plan document and Prezi will be a hybrid of the expectations and formats of MU and the Columbia Public Schools Art Curriculum and should include: 1. UNIT TITLE – What is your power? 2. ENDURING IDEAS - Throughout time and across cultures artists contemplate power: The source, the feeling, and the loss of power. 3. COURSE - Studio Art (intermediate level) 4. ELO - Expressively manipulate the art elements and principles to create compositions that exhibit a compelling division of space. - Analyze ways in which artists interpret ideas, solve problems, reflect and lend relevancy to their times. 5. ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS – How do you gain power? How do you feel when in power? How do you feel when you lose power? 6. EXEMPLAR ARTISTS – Graphic Novels, Comic Books, Super Heroes, Also the Art 21 on Power is great, Ida Applebroog, the artist show power in several ways. 7. OBJECTIVES - Artists will be able to: 1) Think critically about how artists depict the many facets of power, 2) Think about and execute interesting composition to effectively convey a story of power, 3) Defend their pieces through the power critique. 8. MATERIALS – matte board and markers, fine tip, micron markers 9. PROCEDURES - Artists will....explore elements such as line, shape, form, space, etc, play with mark making with different types and thicknesses of marker, relate their story to a story of power/super heroes, choose composition of pieces, order of windows. 10. ASSESSMENT – This will be a play on critique. We will be viewing each of the artists’ work and they will be given this statement to think about “I am powerless or powerful defending my work. The students will be explaining or defending their work for their grade. This will give them practice in critique as well as make connections to power through defending themselves and work. CULMINATING ACTIVITY - The critique will be the culminating activity.

11. UNIT EXEMPLAR - Exemplars will be made. Right now Graphic novels and comics will be used. 12. EVIDENCE of Prior Knowledge - Students are aware of the many facets of power. One person has power over many (Ex: Governments), a few( Ex: parents over children), or none(Ex: children feel they have no power over anyone). But everyone has power over themselves. Students will reflect and respond to these ideas with their own experience and stories.
