Judging by some of the headlines relating to Ikea’s plans to trial small store formats,you’d be easily forgiven for thinking thechain was planning a branch on every highstreet (see p6).
But it won’t. And there’s one overridingreason why not: parking is limited on themajority of high streets, which is why theforthcoming Norwich store is on a retail parknext to a ring road.
Can you imagine the chaos of scores ofshoppers turning up to collect their newStocksund sofa or Trysil bedroom furnitureonly to find the store’s two parking spacesare already occupied and a traffic warden isprocessing the first parking fine?
No, high streets are not going to be hometo small Ikea stores but retail parks, be they
edge of town or elsewhere, probably will be. I can imagine a network of regional large
stores acting as showrooms where shopperscan see the full range supported by localclick and collect centres, rather thanshoppers lugging their purchases to thecouncil car park.
So farewell to May Design Series (see p10).Trying to get the UK furniture industry tomove from the NEC in January to Excel inMay has proved to be one of the leastsuccessful exhibition ideas of recent years.
Congratulations to Dids Macdonald on herrichly deserved OBE in the Queen’s BirthdayHonours List (see p14). The protectiondesigners now have (and should have haddecades ago) is largely thanks to the tirelessefforts of Macdonald and her colleagues at atime when politicians had little or no interestin the subject.
After what seems eons, finally Balta’sownership has been settled, where privateequity firm Lone Star is buying out privateequity firm Doughty Hanson, Filip Balcaenand its management (see p10).

Ikea to trial smaller formatNorwich is to be the location of the first of three trial Ikeasmall store formats, as it looks to be more accessible tocustomers.
The chain plans to open a 19,000sqft store on the SweetBriar Retail Park, off the city’s outer ring road this autumn.
Customers will be able to view some products whileplacing orders or collecting from the store.
‘It is less than a 10th of the size, so not everything whichis in a normal store will be there. There will be someproducts on display and there will be a lot of support forpeople wanting to purchase products. There will beopportunities to order and collect goods and there will alsobe a café in the store,’ says Jack Jackson, Ikea order andcollection development manager.
Two further trial formats are being developed for the UK,which the chain hopes to have running by next autumn,alongside three overseas trials.
Ikea says shoppers can make up to eight visits whenbuying bedrooms or kitchens, which from Norwich involvesa four-hour round journey to Lakeside or Milton Keynes.
The Norwich store will act primarily as a planning studioalongside the collection facility.

The BFM has paid tribute to its outgoingchairman John Alston, after he stooddown following the sale of AlstonsUpholstery.
At the association’s board meeting lastmonth Alston relinquished the role hehas held for two and a half years.
To celebrate his 40 years in theindustry and 12 as a director of the BFM,a small luncheon was held after theboard meeting at Furniture Makers’ Hall.
Invited guests included GeorgeMitchell, past BFM chairman, RichardRanklin and Charles Vernon. Ranklin and Vernon were both part of the BFM Young Managers group with Johnand David Alston a quarter of a centuryago.
Matt O’Flynn, Collins and Hayes mdand new BFM chairman, praised hispredecessor’s work for which he waspresented with an Award for Excellence.
Jackie Bazeley, BFM md, also thankedAlston for his service to the BFM and thepersonal support given to her.
Brian Ahern, BFM director, has beenappointed interim vice-chairman.

Dids Macdonald awardedOBE for IP protection work
Dids Macdonald, Anti Copying in Design(ACID) ceo, has been awarded an OBE forservices to the design industry in the Queen’sBirthday Honours.
‘I am immensely proud of this recognitionand honoured to be awarded an OBE. Thishighlights the importance of intellectualproperty that underpins all successful designbrands, of which there are so many within thefurnishing industry. I am determined tocontinue to raise awareness about ACID’songoing campaign “Commission it, Don’tCopy it”,’ says Macdonald.
She co-founded ACID in 1996 as avoluntary based round table action group tocreate a plan to help small companiesconquer global copyists. Before that she was
a partner in a successful small companydesigning and producing decorativeaccessories. But with success came blatantcopying every time a new product waslaunched and she nearly lost her businessseveral times.
At the time there was no organisation tohelp designers protect their intellectualproperty.
ACID is now recognised as the leading UKdesign and intellectual property organisation,helping thousands of designers to protecttheir work. After ACID’s 15-year campaign, the Intellectual Property Act became law on 1 October 2014, making the intentionalinfringement of a registered design a criminaloffence.Dids Macdonald

The funeral of Reg Symondstook place on 22 June. Hedied on 7 June, aged 85.
Symonds started his life-long career in the interiorsindustry after national servicein the RAF in the early 1950swhen he joined Blundells ofSittingbourne, after doingeverything from deliveries,carpet fitting and selling, hewas promoted to manager.
He left in 1966 to become asales representative withRiding Hall Carpets, followedby Lancaster, YoughalCarpets, Velma, beforereturning to Lancaster andfinally Cormar where he wassouthern sales manager untilhis retirement in 1993.
He is survived by his wifeNesta and six sons, five ofwhom are in the industry.

QOne of my customers is considering buying a sofafrom us along with a warranty. He asked if thewarranty would cover the sofa’s frame: he weighs
about 25stone and has broken a previous sofa. He alsowanted to know if he would be covered if it needed repairinga second time?
AIn this case your customer would need to purchase afurniture protection plan that includes structural cover.The furniture would first be covered for failure of the
frame under the manufacturer’s warranty and then once thewarranty has expired, the Guardsman insurance protection planwould cover for the remainder of the time up to the five-yearlimit of the plan.
The Financial Ombudsman’s view is that the furniture should be fit for purpose for the duration of the insurance plan and therefore if multiple repairs are required they wouldbe permitted until the indemnity value of the policy wasreached.
QA distraught customer returned from holiday todiscover that while she was away a party was held ather house and a fight broke out. The result is that her
living room carpet was torn in several places and stained byblood. The carpet was expensive, which is why she bought aprotection plan, but the company that made it is no longer inbusiness. What can she expect?
AOnce again the customer would need to have aprotection plan that provides cover for accidentaldamage as well as staining. If the coverage were correct
then a claim could be made. In these types of cases Guardsmanwould look to establish if the party was held with thepermission of the plan holder, as there could potentially be aright of recovery of costs from the individual or individualsinvolved.
The manufacturer no longer being in business is not an issue:the protection plan is administered by the plan provider andnot the manufacturer.
If a replacement item is required an alternative carpet of asimilar quality and value can be offered or, depending on theinsurance underwriter, a cash settlement might also bepossible.

In St Peter’s Basilica in Rome is a chairbelieved to date back to the sixthcentury, one of the oldest chairs inexistence. It’s so well worn it’s only puton display once a century. When I was achild, we had furniture in the front roomwhich was only ever used when we hadguests, so it probably would have lastedjust as long.
But in today’s world, how long shoulda piece of furniture last? Some sofas arenot just sat on, they’re lived in – ourlifestyles have changed dramatically, buthave customers’ expectations movedwith the times? I visited a fitted bedroominstallation where the customer hadlabelled every minute ‘fault’ with a Post-itnote and his expectations were clearlyconsiderable.
Every time you sell, two sets ofexpectations meet on the shopfloor: thecustomer’s and yours. Identifying thedifferences and managing the customer’sexpectations is crucial to a successfultransaction. Failing to do so willdoubtless mean a complaint.

previous experiences (and that of theirfriends and relatives), the price, and theirperception of your brand.
Yours may be based on your technicalknowledge and on your experiences withthat product or supplier.
But there’s a third factor that must betaken into account: how will the furniturebe used and cared for? It’s not unknownfor a customer to assume upholsteryneeds no maintenance. So it’s importantto ensure you give the right advice aswell as the right product: how you sell istherefore as important as what you sell.
All too often the customer’sexpectations and perceptions only comeout at the time of a complaint, so listento your complaining customers carefully.Their complaints may be more about thegap between their expectations andyours than about faults with the product.If you learn from this you’ll be able tomake sure similar complaints are avoidedby more care at the selling stage.
Guarantees can influence a customer.They show confidence in your productand help a decision to purchase. Also,they affect the customer’s expectations

about the durability of what they’vebought. They shouldn’t be worded in away that would dissuade a customerfrom making a reasonable complaint: noreasonable consumer would expect anyitem of furniture to last only a year, so aone-year guarantee cannot stop thecustomer making a claim after two ormore years, and could make them thinktwice about buying.
A customer has the right to make alegal claim up to six years after purchaseand even longer if a guarantee promisesa longer life for the product. Plus, theyhave statutory rights that cannot beover-ridden by any guarantee.
How long should a product last? That’sa question worth considering every timeyou’re with a customer. Ask the rightquestions to understand theirexpectations so you can ensure they’rerealistic and make sure what you sellmeets or exceeds them. It seems that everywhere you turn, manymore people are doing their bit for theenvironment. From something as simpleas weekly recycling to the upcyclingfurniture trend, where people sand,varnish and paint their way to a totallynew look.
But, using reclaimed materials todesign furniture allows something to becreated that suits your own style, whilealso reducing your carbon footprint andbreathing new life into natural resources.
‘At African Trackwoods, our businesshas been founded on the recycling ofhardwood, a material that is at the heartof the reclaimed furniture boom,’ saysSimon Fox, African Trackwoods owner.
At the turn of the last century,thousands of hectares of Southern
Africa’s indigenous hardwoods were cutdown for the Cape to Cairo railroad.Since the early 1900s these sleepers havebeen exposed to the elements so haveweathered and aged naturally.
‘Using this stunning wood, our team ofskilled carpenters are able to recycle andhand-craft the original hardwoodsleepers into our range of distinctivefurniture,’ he says.
Once the sleepers are delivered to theHarare factory in Zimbabwe, they aregraded according to their wood,character and quality.
The wood is predominantly AfricanTeak, Salinga or Panga Panga, allindigenous to Africa. The furniture is heat and water resistant, enabling theteam to create pieces that are steeped in
history, yet ideal for modern living.The company buys sleepers from the
mines and railways of Zambia andgenerally holds stock of about 1,000.
‘We take great pride in recycling thisotherwise unwanted wood andbreathing new life into it,’ explains Fox.
He says the company is capable ofcreating designs for any room but it isfocusing on the living, dining andbedroom sectors for the UK.
Each sleeper is cut to reveal threedifferent stages of weathering. Theoutside of the sleeper is used to give arustic, heavy finish; the next layer is usedto create a medium finish while the coreof the sleeper is used for a smooth, finefinish.Visit: www.africantrackwoods.com

Furniture logistics specialist AndrewPorter is experiencing record-breakinggrowth in its 20th anniversary year. Thefirm’s direct home delivery service inparticular is booming, with existingcustomers increasing business, and highprofile firms signing up, with contracts

The company has also invested inmore home and retail delivery vehicles,increasing its fleet to 60 vehicles and 50trailers.
Tim Aspey, Andrew Porter md, says thegrowth in all aspects of the company’slogistics division shows that customerconfidence is at a new high. ‘All of ournew customers have come viarecommendations, or because they werewanting a more reliable or higher qualitylevel of service than they had beenreceiving elsewhere.’
Its DHD service puts quality first and isdesigned for customers who value thecare of their products and customers’experience over cost-cutting. He says thecompany’s service reduces damage andgives end users a quality experiencewhen receiving a home delivery.
‘We’re delighted to report that ournumbers of home deliveries are now atrecord levels and we are investing toensure our customers receive the same,or improved levels of service, as demandincreases,’ he says.
One of the most popular options is thefull service logistics provision, combiningwarehousing, home delivery and retaildeliveries, as it means customers do notneed to worry about planning oroverseeing logistics requirements, as it isall in the hands of specialists.
Specialist in memory foam mattresses,Dormeo, has relied on Andrew Porter asits logistics partner for the past twoyears, with the company providing a fullcomplement of services.
Initially it was appointed to handlewarehousing and deliveries for Dormeo’sOctaspring mattress range, 18 monthsafter it was launched in the UK. With

Fedora combines minimalism and history
Among the highlights of Axo Light’s 2015launches is Fedora, in which designerDima Loginoff has combined minimalismand historical references in the form ofthe Russian Matryoshka doll.
‘It has the most minimal shapecompared with other Russian icons.Besides, despite what many people thinkabout Matryoshka – it’s not too old. Infact it is as old as cinematograph, andthe idea of many layers when you mayfind one doll inside another came fromJapan. Many Russians think thatMatryoshka is 500 or 1,000 years old.
‘I have several dolls at home. One ofthem is simple and painted just in onebold colour – gold. Despite peoplecalling me “the least Russian designer inRussia”, I love this shape and it seems it’sin my DNA. The name Fedora is an oldand forgotten Russian name, its shortname is Dora: the name of my great-grandmother,’ he says.
Loginoff says the history of shapesoften influences artists and designers.
‘I am a big fan of minimalism, but atthe same time I always have this contrastin my mind about historical influence,meaning not only Russian historicalstyles. I am playing a wonderful game in
design where I try to combine modernand traditional.
‘It is not strange that in this project Iconnected modern and old. It usuallydepends on the shape. I have designedmany ultra-modern things, butsometimes I just feel that classical shapeswill be great to redesign and turn theproduct into modern.’

When asked about Russian taste hesays he doesn’t know what’s going on inthat field.
‘Maybe that’s why I haven’t designedfor any Russian company yet. Of course,there are differences with the rest of theworld. New money, new power, newways of expression. Rich people oftenlook strange, but what I noticed – theylearned fast and they are changing. Youcan easily find absolutely modern, simpleand luxurious residences as well asmodern townhouses in suburbs for themiddle class. And it is not too“traditional”.
‘As for me, I start my day with a cup ofespresso and design blogs. I check a lotof design content, but not because I haveto. That’s my passion, that’s part of mylife. Local market doesn’t influence me atall, the world of design does.
‘Designing lamps is one of the aspectsI love more about my work. This ideaincludes so many aspects: shape andaesthetics, the light, its rays, theshadows. And people always forgetabout the darkness. In one turn you lightup the darkness. Which other piece ofdesign can do that?’Visit: www.axolight.it

The tsunami that was ‘carpet is bad for you,rip it up and replace it with smooth floors’has, fortunately, passed. But that is not to saythat the twin subjects of allergens and airpollution are not regularly revisited by themedia.
In January this year, the Daily Mail ran anarticle entitled ‘Could the air in your homebe killing you?’ The text was factuallyaccurate and drew attention to the potentialeffects on health from airborne toxicchemical pollutants that are not dispersedbecause of inadequate ventilation in UKhomes.
It did not mention carpet per se, but didcarry a representation of a dust mite withthe warning that ‘carpets harbour dust mites’.
There is an argument that the damage hasbeen done and that the claims, whileadmittedly in the past, have impacted uponconsumers and is firmly embedded in theminds of some.
While in no way as front of mind as before,there is still a misconception among aportion of the carpet buying public, that forthose with asthma, carpet is not the rightfloorcovering. There is an undercurrent that

carpet is bad for you if you suffer fromasthma.
But, the three dimensional construction of a carpet is such that many airbornepollutants, which need to be breathed in tocause harm, become collected in the pile ofa carpet, until removed by routine vacuumcleaning, so preventing their recirculation inindoor air.
Furthermore, a dust mite is hardly a toxicchemical and it is beds, not carpets, that
tend to provide the optimum conditions fordust mites to thrive.
Is this a battleground that the industryshould consider entering – particularly ascarpet sales are definitely on the up (that isnot to say that smooth sales are not)?
If any organisation could or should take itup, it would be the Carpet Foundation.
Interestingly, talking to chief executiveAndrew Stanbridge, he did not rule it out.
‘We as an organisation, and as an industry,have long been guarded and defensiveabout the health benefits of carpet. However,retailers are increasingly telling us that theconcern over carpet for asthma sufferers stillbubbles away beneath the surface. And,what is more, it is an entrenched view anddifficult to change opinions. It is certainly anarea we are looking at,’ he says.
