While the figures in the report – a 14.4% dropin spending on furniture and furnishings anda 24.4% fall in flooring – are bad enough, wait until you see what the price competitionof both sectors has done to sales values. Bynot being able to increase prices to keep upwith inflation, furniture has missed out onalmost 30% of sales and flooring almost 40%.

Producing accurate industry data hashistorically been difficult, but the figuresincluding inflation are a more realistic pictureof what’s happened in the past few yearsthan the headline ones.

The decision of Brockway Carpets andCormar Carpets to join the CarpetFoundation is a welcome move. As JohnDuncan, Carpet Foundation chairman says,

hopefully their joining will be a catalyst forothers to join. The independent flooringretail sector needs a voice to promote it andlobby on its wider needs and the CarpetFoundation is that voice.

The past month has seen what could beinteresting career changes: Greg Suthernmoving to bed manufacturing and MarkSymes leaving Willis & Gambier. DormeoOctaspring maker Studio Moderna Brandswill gain from Suthern’s retail experience as ittries to expand its presence, while Symes isexpected to return to the furniture market.

The move into the insurance replacementmarket by Lifestyle Floors is one that couldcause a few ripples, with many retailers likelyto be attracted by the lack of membershipcosts or fees.

If your living room carpet has been ruined, dealing with the insurance claim andarranging fitting of the new flooring can be astress. Most consumers would prefer to dealwith a retailer they may already know orsomeone who can give them personalattention, rather than encountering severalsalespeople. With 200,000 flooring insuranceclaims a year, it is a slice of the market highstreet stores should be taking the most of.

The decline in the interiorsmarket since its 2005 peakhas been laid bare by theOffice for National Statistics’Family Spending report for2011.

Brockway and Cormar jointhe Carpet FoundationBrockway Carpets and Cormar Carpets have joined theCarpet Foundation as full manufacturing members.

The new manufacturer subscriptions policy played a keypart in recruiting the two manufacturers and it is hopedothers will follow, says John Duncan, Carpet Foundationchairman.

He says the decision will assist the Foundation as it setsabout reinvigorating itself promotionally, with digitalactivity planned for 2013, and financially, with a new feestructure for both manufacturers and retailers.

‘It is a real bonus for us and sends out a strong messageto the industry at large. It is no secret that it has been achallenging period for us but we have remodelled ourselves and will emerge leaner, fitter and stronger and ideally positioned to build on the previous hard work. We have exciting and innovative plans in place for2013 and this is the perfect way to start a new year,’ addsDuncan.

‘As original founding members, it is good to be back,’ saysCharles Annable, Brockway md. ‘In addition to thepromotional work the Carpet Foundation does and itssupport of the independent retailer, the technical expertisewe can garner from them and the increasing importance ofenvironmental matters influenced our decision. Regulatorycompliance is going to be key going forward, particularly inthe markets we are seeking to operate in, and theexperience and help that the Carpet Foundation canprovide in this area will be invaluable to us.’

David Cormack, Cormar marketing director, says: ‘Key toour involvement, is the fact that the Carpet Foundation hasbecome a vehicle to promote independent flooring retailersand buying groups in the UK. As we are a 100% Britishcarpet manufacturer, with the majority of our business withindependents, it obviously makes sense for Cormar toendeavour to support them and joining the CarpetFoundation will only strengthen that bond.’

Overseas love affair continuesThe UK continued its love affair with imported furniture last year.

Imports of furniture decreased by just 4.4%, according to the FIRAStatistics Digest 2012, falling from £4.5bn to £4.3bn. China remained thelargest exporter (32%) while Italy maintained its role as a major source(11%).

According to the report, exports continued to climb, reaching £993m.The report says that from 2008 to 2011, the total number of UK furniture

manufacturers dropped by 4%, with 225 fewer companies in 2011 than2010. Total turnover in manufacturer sales fell by 23% over the 2008 to2011 period and average employment fell by 15%.

Carpetright ‘hasthe right strategy’Darren Shapland, Carpetright chief executive, saysthe chain has the right strategy but needs to speedup improving its stores and marketing its beds offer.

UK retail sales increased by 3% on a like for likebasis in the six months to 27 October with grossmargins rising from 58% to 61.7%. But, includingwholesale sales, like for like sales dropped by 0.7%and total sales fell 1.6% to £189.1m. Some £12.4m ofproperty charges saw a pre-tax loss of £7.9m.

Shapland says the group ‘grew underlying profitsand generated cash in line with expectations duringthe first half, with an encouraging increase in UKretail store like for like sales and a significantimprovement in gross profit percentage year onyear’. Trading conditions in the Netherlandsremained difficult.

‘Having been with the business for seven monthsand seen it trade through the important Septemberto November peak has confirmed my initial viewthat the group is well managed and that nofundamental shift in strategy is required.

‘That said, we believe there are opportunities toaccelerate the pace of a number of current self-helpinitiatives, notably the ongoing modernisation ofthe store estate, building customer awareness of ourbed offer and further improving customer service, toenable us to grow our market share,’ says Shapland.

OPINION

Fingers crossed that it is going to continue but, say it quietly, the winter sale has got off to a good start.

We may only be a few days into it and, of course, thecustomers could dry up by the end of today, but I have a good feeling about the sale this time. Certainly better than last year.

We were ready in good time so we decided that we may aswell start. We booked an extra advert in the local paper andbegan the sale on 23 December.

I figured that by then most people would have done any lastminute gift and food shopping and could be interested insomething different. And we were going to be open anyway, sowhy not?

In the advert we highlighted that we could offer very quick

delivery, often next day, over the discounts on offer. During the past few months we’ve been switching more to

suppliers who can deliver quickly, preferably direct to thecustomer.

If people are paying a decent amount of money they wanttheir goods now, not in weeks. And with stores closing everymonth it gives them the extra confidence to order if they knowthey’ll get their furniture delivered almost immediately.

I’m glad to say the policy has been paying off. The oncetraditional pre-Christmas delivery deadline rush was better thanin 2011, but that wasn’t hard.

The surprising thing was that people were leaving it right upto the end before ordering, but in the week before Christmaswe sold more dining tables than we did during the whole ofDecember 2011. And through a mixture of our suppliers andhaving a little more stock we delivered every last one. We evenhad one order on 23 December that we managed to deliver onChristmas Eve.

Since Christmas, quick delivery hasn’t lost any of its appealand it seems that if you can get it out there within a few days, the customers will have it.

Hopefully this will carry on for a while longer. These past fewweeks have certainly improved my mood for the upcomingshows.

The opening of the 185,000sqft Leekes home store on 22 September last year could turn out to be one of the mostimportant days in the family-owned company’s history, sinceJames Leeke began selling ironmongery in his front room inClydach Vale, Tonybandy in 1897. Although the company hascome along way since then, the opening of its eighth – and byfar the largest – home store has shown it may have developed astore format that could be developed across the country.

Leekes’ stores have always offered a full range of interiorsproducts, but the conversion of the former Makro unit hasallowed the scale of the offer to be significantly boosted.

And with the space available, many would be tempted to fillit with as many products as possible to ensure they appeal to awide range of consumers. After all, £6m is no small sum tospend during a recession.

But the temptation was resisted, with all departments givenroom to let products be shown to their best in plenty of space –be it flooring, kitchens, furniture, lighting, furnishings, beds orits clothing, food or cycling concessions.

Despite being the size of an Ikea, the store atmosphere andshopping experience is different – there is no race track forexample and shoppers can freely move from one department

to the other without ever feeling trapped, lost or overwhelmed. And since the opening, shoppers across the West Midlands

have responded. ‘From day one customer response and salesfigures have been unprecedented, exceeding all expectations,’says Emma Leeke, Leekes retail md.

So much so that an extra bank of tills has been installed andstaffing numbers have been lifted by 30 to 90 since opening. Inaddition there are 20 self-employed contractors, with a further40 staff working for the concession partners.

‘This is already much higher than we anticipated needing inthe first three months of operation and gets us well on

the way to the 200 to 250 we believed we would use when fullyoperational,’ explains Leeke.

Sales are already at the levels of its more establishedbranches. ‘Particularly strong areas include furnituredepartments, where we already had a reputation in theMidlands from our department store in Bilston and furniturestores in Stoke on Trent and Bedworth [when it purchased Colesin 2009, with the Coventry store replacing Bedworth] but also innew areas such as kitchens and tableware, lighting andclothing,’ she says.

And the start of the winter sale is proving to be no exception:it took five minutes for the first transaction to be made andwithin four hours of opening at 10am sales targets had beenmet and then exceeded, at 25% above target.

Early shoppers caused tailbacks on the roads and the 500-space car park was practically full for most of the day as 2,000shoppers visited. Online sales for the chain were up 15%.

Starting from a clean slate gave the company the opportunityto try new approaches. All equipment was designed in-house,lighting displays were updated – there are more than 150ceiling and 150 table lamps on display – the zoning of itsfurniture offer was improved, something that will be rolled outto other stores.

And at the core of its offer are brands. The kitchen andtableware range contains all the leading brands from Denbyand Wedgwood to Sophie Conran, Tefal and Joseph Joseph. Thefurniture, flooring, beds and bathroom departments are a Who’sWho of names – including the country’s largest G PlanUpholstery studio alongside Duresta, Ercol, Calligaris, Halo,Hulsta, Holte and Hammonds galleries or studios. These are

supported by a non-branded selection and Leekes’ pricepromise to attract those tempted to go elsewhere online.

The store and the chain has benefitted from consumersimproving their homes, rather than moving, and Leeke isconfident this trend, and the chain’s ability to supply it, willcontinue this year.

There is an argument that downturns are the very time toinvest so you are the first to gain from an upturn and Leekes isfollowing this route.

It owns the sites of all its stores and is planning a £2mrefurbishment to its Melksham branch that will give it morefloorspace and also house a medical practice with 20,000patients. At Llantrisant, a new Leekes store will be thecentrepiece of a £200m redevelopment of the town centre andcould be one of the first completed. Downturn? Retailpessimism? Not here.

Single voiceConsolidating brands has paiddividends for Bensons for BedsLast year was when three successfully became one – SteinhoffInternational consolidated its Bensons for Beds, Sleepmastersand Bed Shed chains as Bensons for Beds.

For years the three had competed, with three differentmarketing messages and product offers.

Alan Williams, Bensons for Beds md, says when he becameresponsible for the trio in 2011, the state of the economy meanttough decisions had to be made as collectively it had theoutlets but too many voices to market.

After research, Bensons for Beds emerged as the name toretail. Management was keen to retain the Sleepmasters brandgiven its strong associations with value among shoppers and soit has become a successful own-label range for the chain.

It was also decided that the shopping experience had to beimproved which saw the introduction of The Comfort Station. This reduced the buying decision to three simple steps: choosethe bed style, mattress firmness and mattress type. It also sawthe removal of technological terms, which many shoppers canfind confusing.

Taking the best bits of the three chains has paid dividends forthe new store. Where stores have been converted, sales haveincreased by as much as 50%.

Its success was recognised when it was named Multiple BedRetailer of the Year at the National Bed Federation Bed ShowAwards, an award Williams says he never expected to win.

‘We are so proud to have been named Multiple Bed Retailerof the Year 2012. It’s been a year of consolidation and greatchange, and we have worked tirelessly to overhaul our in-storeshopping experience and introduce The Comfort Station to ourcustomers.

‘This award is testament to all the hard work that the Bensonsfor Beds team has put into making the brand a success. It’sa fantastic achievement and one that everyone should beproud of.’

POS has helped drive sales for Dormeo Octaspring

Dormeo Octaspring has been in the UKbed market for a little over a year and themattress technology, based aroundmemory foam springs, is already beingsold in more than 350 stores.

‘We have invested significantly todeliver this growth with more than £1mspent on advertising in the UK in 2012,’says John Bramm, Dormeo Octaspringmd.

The company is continuing fromwhere it left off last year by sponsoringthe weather forecasts on ITV1’s Daybreakprogramme as part of a large advertisingpush in January and February.

‘The mattresses uniquely offer thecradling effect of memory foam springsto produce a mattress that feels like noother. The open structure of the springsensures the mattress is cool and wellventilated all night long, while thememory foam technology providesconsistent support and pressure relief. Infact, it delivers all the benefits oftraditional spring and memory foambeds, with none of the drawbacks,’ saysBramm.

He highlights the success of its POS atattracting shoppers using its customaryblack and orange branding. ‘It has a verystrong focus on the features and benefitsof the beds, while working equally hardto give a powerful premium feel andcreate an “I want one of those” responsein customers.’

Bramm says this strong in-storepresence has been key to growth in thepast year. ‘We see customers comingstraight to the beds, lying down on them, and spending a lot of time talking to the staff about the unique feel of themattresses. Once they have been on thebed and felt how comfortable it is,people just buy it, it’s as simple as that.’

Latex provides mattress comfort

Natural moves

‘It may not sound like it, but latex is a naturalmaterial not a synthetic material. It is made from thesap of the hevea brasiliensis tree. Latex is naturallyhypoallergenic and our latex is also aerated for extrabounce and coolness,’ says Iftikhar Mirza, RestAssured product quality manager.

Latex is extra bouncy, so allows you to movearound in bed more easily than on a thick memoryfoam mattress.

‘It is important that you move in your sleep as thisallows the fluid to move around your spine to keepit “well oiled” and free of toxins for the day ahead,’ he adds.

Rest Assured combines latex with pocket springsin the mattress to provide support while the springs are reinforced around the edges to preventroll-off.

Mirza also points out that people with latexallergies can use the mattresses as the latex used in all Rest Assured mattresses is effectively‘cooked’ before it goes into the mattress, reducing the risk of allergic reactions to almost nil.

Part of Rest Assured’s latex offer, Latex Luxury2000 has 2,000 pocket springs in the no-turnmattress. Its firm base gives a supportive foundationwhile a luxury-feel sprung base is also available.Visit: www.rest-assured.co.uk

Launching an upmarket product in a recession may not be animmediately obvious route to success, but for Flock Living’sdirectors, Ashoke Sethia and Gareth Lewis, it was a simpledecision.

While most market sectors are arguably oversupplied, thepair claim they have spotted a gap between the premium andluxury sectors that its initial 13 designs can occupy.

Keen to avoid ‘me-too’ products, Flock has created seventufted and six woven ranges, manufactured by Adam Carpetsand Lano respectively. Adam was chosen for its ability to offerindividual tuft control while Lano ‘technically makes the best

axminster in the world,’ according to Sethia. The three-ply yarnis manufactured by Danspin.

‘We have identified a niche in the market for an ethicallyrobust brand and have come at it from a different perspectiveto the norm. We have a lifestyle positioned product range alliedto an ethical consciousness that will appeal to fashionistas, middle England and the sophisticated’, says Lewis.

Inspiration for the designs came from the furnishing industrywhile the colour palette was borne out of the clothing industry,he says.

For Sethia, the launch of Flock Living is a continuation

of a family love affair with natural fibres. His family joined theUK jute trade in the 1840s and by the 1950s had become theworld’s largest jute fibre supplier as it grew into a commodityconglomerate.

By his own admission he could explain for days why mixedfibre products are inferior to 100% pure products, so it is nosurprise that its carpets are 100% Laneve wool.

‘Now consumers want 100% natural fibres, eco credentialsand luxury attributes, but they buy what they think looks nice,’he says.

Which is why it is hard to easily apply a style label to Flock’sranges. The designs have a chameleon like quality – just bychanging the colour a contemporary carpet takes on a moreclassical look.

With retail prices of £70 to £150 per sqm, Flock is not forevery shopper or retailer, targeting just 150 to 200 top endflooring stores, independent furnishing retailers anddepartment stores. ‘Inspiration and aspiration are the words wewant to have with consumers. It might be expensive per sqmbut the cost is low over the lifetime of the carpet as it lastslonger as we’re using more wool than competitors in themarketplace,’ says Sethia.

The company has invested heavily in photography to supportstockists, with a 30cm x 30cm book showing roomsetphotography next to an image of the design, and a POS standwith a 0.5sqm footprint.

Further products are likely to include wiltons and flatweaves.Flock Living, tel: 020 8440 8777

When Jansen Furniture started out in the UK in 1994 it was atthe lower end of the market with cheaper, deep red mahoganyfurniture. Now it specialises in the top end.

‘About six years ago, through increasing amounts of marketresearch worldwide, we discovered there was a noticeable trendthat people were beginning to change their mindset when itcame to purchasing furniture,’ says a Jansen spokesman. ‘It wasapparent, that the best buy was not the cheapest or one thatappeared to be the best bargain, instead the desirable purchasewas the one that got you the best product for the right pricewith the additional reassurance that you were buying a qualitylifetime addition to your home.’

The company says it is stronger than ever, not only in the UKbut also in Europe, the US, Canada and the Far East. At itsmanufacturing facility in Indonesia it produces some 1,000

different furniture products with constant new designs. ‘Everything is quality checked, packaged and distributed to

the highest degree of efficiency to ensure everything reflectsthe high end nature of our product,’ says the spokesman.

With its largest stand for a decade, Jansen has moved to hallone at the NEC. It will have more than 130 pieces of furniture ondisplay along with more than 50 bronzes. Among them will befive new finishes, 20 new products and a new catalogue. It willalso show its latest, more user-friendly website.

‘We pride ourselves on producing timeless creations that addcharacter and warmth to any home. Whether it is through asmall accent nest, an elegant coffee table, or one of ourimpressive extendable dining tables, there is something in therange to suit anybody looking for individuality,’ he adds.Jansen Furniture, tel: 01673 866 616

Taking the idea of concrete and the ease of fitting laminate orengineered floors has led to the creation of Concreate, a rangeof concrete flooring that can be installed in homes andcommercial interiors without the need for conventional pouredconcrete systems.

The subtle clean lines of the micro-bevelled panelscomplement most modern living areas from kitchen diners andliving rooms to bedrooms and bathrooms. Installed in moretraditional settings, it adds a contemporary twist.

Concreate also has green credentials. The panels areproduced using the latest machine technology to engineerwhat is ultimately a fully biodegradable natural product. Thereare no harmful chemicals used in the production, which issituated next to the source of the raw materials used, the bulkof which are minerals such as magnesium oxide and cement. These natural minerals are mixed and pressed with naturalfibres and layers of recycled textiles. The magnesium replacesmost of the limestone used in traditional production, allowing itto be processed at about half the temperature, reducing CO2emissions.

The resulting panels are set outside to air cure, giving eachsurface a unique patina. Once cured the panels are kilned toproduce an ultra-durable floor that is both tactile andaesthetically pleasing. The aesthetic qualities are furtherenhanced with a machine application of Danish oil, which sealsthe floor and allows for straightforward maintenance.

Able to absorb and maintain ambient temperature, concretefloors are ideal for underfloor heating, storing the warmth andoptimising the energy efficiency of the heating system.

Concreate is distributed in the UK by V4 Flooring.Concreate, tel: 01276 488 099

Among Authentic Models’ reproduction-inspired furniture, lighting andaccessories will be its new desktop car collection.

The Spindizzy was a 1930’s-era American invention, as is AuthenticModel’s model Bantam Midget. This was an era when men with sometechnical background could still build their own racing car.

‘Our interest in Spindizzies began a few years ago when founder HaringPiebenga, had a conversation with one of the modelenthusiasts who seek him out from time to time,’ saysEric Hanson, Authentic Models sales manager.

‘We had never built automotive items, but this was interesting: art deco eraracing with a fun history and therequisite attention to detail thatcustomers expect from the Dutchdesigners. They picked up a few oldmodels here and there, via eBay,collectors or shops: a few Dooling replicas(including the Bantam Midget) and an original BB KornIndianapolis Racer to begin with. Then, working with the craftsmenwho build its airplane collection, we launched the collection.’

The Spindizzy was an early version of model racing. Just asmodelling has always attracted ship and airplane aficionados, carlovers were and still are drawn to it. The models are built fromaluminium, with a cherry base, rubber wheels and wire spokes. TheBantam Midget is the first of a series of five or more to be shown atInteriors UK.Authentic Models, tel: 01403 734 999

Ancient Mariner Furniture will extend itscollection of hand-crafted woodenaccessories, add a TV unit to its mahoganyPacific range and introduce the Villagecollection in light mango.

Kettle Interiors has a new stand for thisyear’s event, demonstrating to retailers thepower of the right in-store display. Usingroomsets to inspire retailers to think abouthow they present furniture to theircustomers, Kettle Interiors will showcase itspine, painted and oak furniture collections.

The supplier will also lift the lid on a newcollection, the Oakham range, a thick topoak range with more than 60 items offurniture. With pieces for living, dining andthe bedroom, the Oakham range is one ofKettle’s largest ever launches. Thecollection also raises the bar in diversity, dining tables for example include a 1.1mbutterfly extending table, a round tableand an extending table that grows toaccommodate 10-12 people. This is areoccurring theme throughout theOakham range to ensure retailers can caterfor any need.

Simon Ainge, Kettle Interiors sales director, says he expects to

see an increase in traditional stylingblended with more contemporary lines atthe show.

‘At the beginning of last year weintroduced our Farmhouse collection withtouches such as proud drawers and doorsand it has become our most successfullaunch and we expect other suppliers tofollow suit with similarly styled ranges. Oakwill still remain the dominant force, thoughexpect to see a wider variety of finishes assuppliers attempt to make their rangesstand out,’ he says.

Seconique continues to expand anddevelop its product range and will unveiladditions to its distressed waxed pinerange including the Corona breakfast setand Corona bar chairs. Other new lines willinclude the Vanya sofabed and HaywardStudy high sleeper.

After a year’s development, includingworking closely with many of its longestablished stockists, SJS Furniture willdebut the Martha’s Vineyard paintedfurniture and accessories collection.

In pursuit of happinessNo-one likes dealing with complaints. Unhappy customers candamage a retailer’s hard fought reputation and it takes time andmoney to resolve claims, regardless of their validity. Interiors Monthlyspoke to three companies keen to make life easier for retailers

By combining care and protectionplans, retailers can cover problems theymight not otherwise have a solution to. Castelan has invested in its ITinfrastructure to enhance security andperformance and in telephony to makethe customer contact experience more

With retailers keen to keep costs to aminimum, many will look to deal withservice issues in-house, but RichardGretton, Castelan commercial director, says this could be more expensive.

‘To outsource service sounds like anoption that should cost more money but,in fact, the opposite is true. By drawingon a national network of fully employedtechnicians, our clients are able to ensurean agreed standard of service isachieved, access claim information in realtime online and expect uniformed staffin liveried vans that deliver a consistentservice throughout the UK. TastetestIs Bretz goingmainstream?

Bretz is best know for its Marmiteupholstery designs. The unique andsometimes startling creations are eitherloved as the work of genius or hated asavant-garde follies.

However, its latest designs are notgoing to frighten any horses and run therisk of being considered mainstream.

Napali is a modular design with itsthree elements of seat, corner unit andfootstool, allowing the user to arrangethe seating as they like. In leather itsangled back and arms are the only thingsthat visually differentiate it from manyothers on the market.

But it is its fabric options that reignite

the trademark Marmite effect: Fantasyevokes jungles and opulently overgrownfoliage and is inspired by Hawaiianislands. Fantasy Foliage is equally bold, taking inspiration from New England inthe autumn during an Indian summer asleaves turn into a kaleidoscope ofcolours.

‘The rough used-look and theasymmetric shape are chosendeliberately, because it gives thefurniture a strong character andpersonality. Salt is expressive but downto earth, hard but soft.’

The oversized cushions drop easilyover the back and arms of the sofa, allowing the user to find the perfect

Encore-Feather: another great performing

cushion fromFibreline

When Fibreline launched Encore in 2010 it

could not have foreseen the success of its

innovative seating system. Encore-Fibre

has the look and feel of fibre with the

recovery and durability of foam and has

been awarded the FIRA Gold seal of

approval. In FIRA tests it outperformed all

other fibre cushions.

Now Fibreline’s innovative seating sys-

tem has been expanded. Fibreline has

developed Encore-Feather, a feather ver-

sion of its award winning Encore-Fibre seat

cushion.

The new cushion has a feather-soft feel

and looks similar to a feather cushion but

has much greater recovery and durability. It

is constructed using grade-A duck feather

with a high quality feather-proof case to

prevent feather percolation and has a

pocketed duvet construction top, front and

bottom to ensure consistency.

At the cushion’s core, high per-

formance seating foam is used for

long lasting performance. A four-

year guarantee against flattening is

standard.

An Encore seat cushion has the

added advantage of being lighter

than a similar sized feather or

fibre cushion. It is therefore

easier to pick up and plump. In

fact, altogether less frequent

plumping is required as the

simple action of regular turn-

ing of the cushion is enough

to maintain its performance.

Why has Encore been

developed?

Fibreline has recognised the

need for a new advanced

seat cushion product. Over

the years feather

and fibre seat cushions

have had a bad reputation because

they often went flat during use. This

resulted in customer complaints and

costs for the retailer and manufacturer

alike. Encore has been developed to solve

this problem.

Using its extensive knowledge, experi-

ence and expertise, Fibreline set itself the

goal of producing the holy grail of seating

cushions.

It wanted to produce a seat cushion that

had the look, feel and sit of a feather or

fibre seat, with much better recovery and

performance. Furthermore it wanted to be

able to guarantee the performance. This it

has now accomplished with Encore-Fibre

and Encore-Feather.

TRENDS

140 Interiors Monthly January 2013

Exciting effectsTextile giant Trevira has identified four key trends for the year ahead

The main trends for interiors 2013/14stimulate and excite. Classic black makesa sophisticated, masculine appearancewith highlights that dispel any darkassociations. Three-dimensional effectsbring a clean, bright impact to mind, with a clearly structured effect that isanything but plain. Comfort continues toplay a large role, incorporated in highquality fabrics via surfaces of rusticcharm. The colour spectrum emanates

warmth and harmony. The four walls around us provide

insights into our personality, revealingwho we are but, more often, who wewould like to be. The desire to feel goodcoincides with the wish to presentoneself. How do others see me in myhome? How can I create an image? Inthese days of digital social networkingthere is increasing emphasis on revealing that which is private, to be

assessed by the community. In the process one should not lose

sight of individual needs. An ambiencegeared towards oneself has the strongestattraction, thus fulfilling its mostimportant function: to be a home. One’sown ideas do not come from anycatalogue, handwriting always remainsunique. This is especially true of the waywe shape our own four walls.Visit: www.trevira.de

Don’t call it black!Dark energies dominate the universe. Supernatural and galactic like a realfairy tale, no one can take hold of them. The lights of distant galaxies flashagainst the sky – who knows the fifth element?Colours: black, aubergine, violet and deep brown emerge mystically. Theyare joined by bronze, pearl grey and silver, bringing a romantic twinkling ofthe eyes to the masculine theme. Designs/fabrics: Through their looks and handle, fabrics radiate dominanceand power in equal measure. Architectonic severity is incorporated into theweave structures or prints. Shiny surfaces with lurex effects are set againstvelvet and brocade-like fabrics, while embroidery adds a decorative touch.

Don’t think twice! The film in the head starts with sudden intensity. Cool and masculine, thepulse quickens with the impressions. Facades reflect a reality that is technical and clear and yet cannot be grasped – and all in 3D.Colours: The colour spectrum stretches from a cool green-blue, through adark emerald to cobalt green. A combination of royal blue, ultra marine andmedium blue produces a total picture that excites. A pale grey provides thenecessary neutral touch. Designs/fabrics: There is a clean-cut look to the fabrics, which are, thanks to their technical qualities, free of opulence. Restrained designs give way tofilm-like sheens, to coatings and lacquer surfaces, producing 3D effects.

Don’t stay alone!Nature the energy-source: coming and going, constantly changing – at times too early and often too late as well. Autumn again, still a warmingexperience, and then all is over. Hopefully but a brief parting. Colours: A loose combination of warm colours sets the tone. Tile red meetswith bright cashmere shades, ruddy brown joins off-white, light sandnuances harmonise with wood green and petrol. Designs/fabrics: Fabrics have a rustic effect and are highly luxurious, with asoft textile feel. Structure comes from coarse yarns; naps, melanges andbouclé emphasise the total impact that endures.

Don’t stop me now!Levity and yearning bubble up reaching undreamt of heights. I take what Ilike, for all to see. My self-confidence will not take no for an answer. I dowhat I think is right and fight for what is mine. That’s the way I want it! Colours: Gossamer-like shades such as lime green, pink or violet lilac present a fascinating contrast to the clarity of the whole theme. Effective use is made of radiant kiwi that can glisten as sharply as neon, while beigemakes for gentle transitions. Designs/fabrics: Fabrics are soft and flowing, with little texture. Fibre yarnsof various types permit a light structure, while designs have a playful, linearimpact. Striking prints display graphic patterns, both all-over and in stripes.

KITCHEN

144 Interiors Monthly January 2013

Light, space, splashes of colour and texturedsurfaces are just some of the key trends in kitchendesign for 2013, according to retailer KitchensInternational. The muted conservatism of recentyears is giving way to more bold designs with high-tech fixtures, clever designs and the use of morenatural materials, especially glass.

‘Colour is back in small doses with accentedcoloured units for certain areas and combined withgreys, whites and blacks. These are often finished insilk rather than gloss so it isn’t overpowering,’ saysKieron Bell, KI designer, who won the UK KBSAKitchen Designer of the Year award and KBSADesigner of the Year award in 2012.

Wood veneer and heavy textured furniture is alsoin, creating a tactile and softer look which blendswell with the furnishings and interiors of the rest ofthe house. Bell says favoured designs for 2013 willstill be for the more minimalist look with a hugearray of handle-less units and linear designs. Thetraditional base and wall units are fading withdesigns evolving into the living areas with floatingunits, open shelving and more living-type furniturebecoming the norm. Dining tables or seating areasare being incorporated into the kitchen designallowing designers to have a greater influence onthe whole living area.

‘Kitchens evolve in terms of design rather thandramatic change but the trend is for a bolder look as the cautious conservatism is being slowly leftbehind,’ he says.

As lighter, open plan designs evolve, glass isplaying a major part in kitchens for 2013.

Gardens are being blended with theinteriors with walls of glass doors sothere is a clear flow between the kitchenand the outside. Glass also featuresheavily in splashbacks, cupolas and evenworktops or doors. Reflective lightprovides another dimension of lightwhen times are gloomy.

For traditional kitchens the look for2013 is a combination of painted andtimber finishes, again lightening the lookand avoiding over-fussy designs. Wood,as a natural and sustainable material, provides a relaxed and calm interior.

Kitchen manufacturer Leicht is usingits latest retro colours – Curcuma: awarm, mustard yellow; Saffron: a boldorange; and Petrol: a fresh blue-green– as accents in blocks or areas andcombining them with its natural colours.Mohair, a warm grey has been added tothe natural choice.

For 2013 Leicht also has new materialsfor its door fronts. Xylo is a gnarled oakeffect that offers an aged wood look infour shades. Stratos is a melamine resincovered laminate front which comes in awavy ‘surf’ texture or ‘patch’ a chequeredtype surface.

For many of the160 exhibitors atLivingKitchen which runs alongside IMMCologne later this month, the trendtowards open-plan kitchens continuesunabated. Seamless transitions betweenkitchen and living space, generousspaces and kitchen furniture designs:virtually all kitchen furnituremanufacturers will present kitchens thatunite cooking and living.

Warendorf, for example, has made thisdevelopment its motto for its new range:‘living room format kitchens’ is theconcept in which high end islands withglossy and low cabinets are combined tocreate living spaces, ensuring the kitchenbecomes the central point of modernliving.

Others will present room solutions, offering shelving, cabinet, tables andchairs to harmonise with the kitchendesign that could also be used in thedining room.

New designs will embrace materialsincluding glass, ceramic and wood. Inmany areas, glass dictates the look.

The natural appearance of the overallkitchen also remains a trend, with theuse of sustainable materials includingceramic, glass, stainless steel and wood.Visit: www.leicht.de

Repeat performanceThe AIS buying group hopes to repeat the success of its firstnon-members show

Associated Independent Stores is to repeat theinclusion of non-AIS member retailers at its Januaryexhibition and opening hours have been extended.

The buying group will have two days for groupmembers (18-19 January) followed by three formembers and non-members (20-22 January).

’Those three days run concurrently with InteriorsUK at the NEC and gives all buyers another reason tovisit Birmingham during that time, especially as theproximity of the AIS show at Cranmore Park, Solihullto the NEC certainly makes it very easy to take inboth shows,’ says Peter Mallinson, AIS merchandisedirector.

While it will host AIS suppliers that can only beseen at Cranmore Park, Mallinson is keen to stressthe event is not competing with Interiors UK.

‘The show is presenting different manufacturers ina different environment where those exhibiting andvisiting will enjoy a more intimate and relaxedbuying atmosphere. We’re not promoting this as analternative show to the NEC, it is simply meant to

help our portfolio of suppliers maximise the numberof retailers they see during that key decision makingperiod, so it is more efficient for everybody involvedto hold it at the same time,’ he says.

‘In addition to the attractions of the CranmorePark setting, those exhibiting are not at the NEC, soif retailers that aren’t AIS members want to see thosecompanies’ new designs in January, then they needto make time to visit the show.’

The event will again fill the ground floor ofCranmore Park. Exhibitors include Actona, CarltonFurniture, Cavendish, Cintique, Contrast, Corndell,Decoro, Habufa, Himolla, JC & MP Smith, Marinelli,MTE, Nathan, O&G, Quaratta Qualita, Sutcliffe, Tetrad,Wade Upholstery, Whitemeadow and Wossner.

‘What buyers will find when they visit CranmorePark is a good mix of contemporary, transitional andtraditional product ranges that can only be seenhere,’ Mallinson adds. ‘With the evidence of 2012 togo on we are confident that The Furniture Show isneeded in the industry and anticipate it becoming aregular fixture in the show calendar, not only in2013, but for many more years ahead.’

The show’s extended opening hours are: 20 January: 8am – 5pm, 21 January 8am – 6pm and 22 January 8am – 5pm.Visit: www.thefurniture-show.co.uk

Reaching higher notesHimolla is looking to continue its UK expansion at the showAfter adding to its UK stockist base last year by more than 20 to117 and its Cumuly product range rapidly becoming one of itsUK bestsellers just months after launch, Himolla will again beexhibiting at Cranmore Park.

This year it is looking to increase its stockists to 140, helpedby its latest designs and consumer marketing campaigns.

‘We make continuous efforts in model development withabsolutely no brothers and sisters of existing models. Insteadwe have well-thought adaptations of our product portfolioincluding wall-hugger recliner sofas, home theatre, and lift andrise chairs with coordinating sofa groups,’ says Mark Litterst,Himolla UK export manager.

This year sees further focus on individual chairs, such as thenew Easy Swing family and crossover products including theCumuly sofas with matching Cumuly and Zerostress chairs.

Easy Swing has three models: Sinatra, Crosby and Armstrong. All models are available in small, medium and large sizes withfive different bases: wooden plate, stainless steel, aluminium, wood and stainless steel, and covered.

Los Angeles is the first wall-hugger design in the Cumulyrange which has also been expanded with the introduction ofthe Humber and Chester lift and rise models.

The Hollywood home cinema model has Cumuly reclinerfunctions in all elements and centre-pieces with storage. It hasan optional charging socket for smart phones and is alsoavailable as a standard sofa.

The Nuvano by Impala fabric cover, which can be cleanedwith water, has also been introduced.

A consumer marketing campaign for 2013 will focus on theHimolla brand, rather than the Cumuly and Zerostress ranges, with a mix of national advertising and local marketing incooperation with stockists.

‘We cannot change the general economic situation. Insteadwe will continue our hard work and follow the path we havedecided to go. We have clearly outlined our strategy and knowexactly where we want to be three years from now,’ addsLitterst.Visit: www.ultimaterecliner.co.uk

Sit on an animalLooking for something that little bit different? Spanish artist Maximo Rieramay be able to help. He has created the Animal Chair Collection, includingelephant, lion, octopus, rhino, walrus and whale designs.

‘Each one is designed to bring together the complex art of humandesign and nature’s splendour, in perfect harmony. I chose the chairbecause it is an everyday object, something taken as common and banal inour lives,’ he says. ‘Each creation in the collection retains the animal’snatural vitality while being totally biologically accurate in their appearance.’

You may need to sit down when ordering though – prices range from£35,000 for the octopus up to £65,000 for the whale. Visit: www.maximoriera.com
