Thinking about updating a room or starting on one from scratch? Have you thought of all the decisions and selections needed before you can put your plan

into action? Your answers could be just a click or touch away. Today’s technology makes it so much easier to find inspiration and keep track of all the details necessary to such an undertaking. Perhaps you’ve visited Houzz (www.houzz.com), a website where you can explore options and interact with professionals. Or even saved Ideabooks on a project so that you can return to the visuals and information time and time again.

Maybe you have discovered the fun of “pinning” ideas on Pinterest (www.pinterest,com boards). I use secret Pinterest boards with my clients as a repository for all things to consider. It’s a way to communicate in between appointments and to keep all the ideas together in one place. For example, a board for a bathroom like the one shown above might include numerous sink and vanity styles as well as images of other baths that you admire. See tile designs you like? Simply Pin It. Pin your

faucets, tile and lighting choices to the boards and you can begin to form a picture of what your new bath could be. Link back to the source of information and you can read reviews and specifications to be more confident of your choices.

As we review and select options, I also build a moodboard (https//itunes.apple.com/us/app/moodboard) where one can get a quick overall idea of how items will work together. Using the same example of renovating a bath, I have included a “before” photo of the space, the client’s moodboard that I assembled for them and the “after” result. Here’s how it came together.

First, I started an Ideabook on Houzz to review with the client. We found a look that they loved. From there, between visiting showrooms and online searches, I pinned choices to their secret board. Again, we reviewed them and further narrowed down selections based on their preferences.

As the design plan evolved, I pasted products and inspiration onto the moodboard (above). If there were three sinks that worked well with the countertop and stone choices, I put them all on the moodboard for the client to see.

The images can be enlarged and moved around to help with the decision making. Select a sink, delete the other two options and move onto the next phase of design. Perhaps it is lighting or tile design or changes to the existing footprint of the room. As more choices are finalized, the board begins to take the shape of the ultimate outcome. You can then print it out to take with you and show to others.

Never has visualization and organization been so easy for consumers. These resources are not just for professionals but for you, the home dweller. You can use the tools with contractors and artisans who will help you realize that “dream.” So check these out and just imagine …

STORY BY DENISE PALUMBO

PHOTOS BY RANDALL PERRY

I was excited to start the process of building a new home

knowing that I would incorporate things I had always loved.

Window boxes on the exterior, glass interior doorknobs

that make me smile every time I touch one, and transoms above

the interior doors were on the list of must haves. It had been 25

years since I last built a home and I looked forward to doing it

again with my years of experience to call upon.

Planning every aspect of a new home requires a time

commitment and it took time to plan how to execute my vision.

I explored options and talked to professionals. I had an organized

list of wants with a sketch when I went to the architect, which

enabled me to get the end result I desired. I value the opinion

of the professional team I surrounded myself with and always

advise clients to do the same. They help make our vision in

terms of style and function a reality.

My new home had to function differently not only for me,

A neutral color scheme in the main living areas is accented by Denise’s favorite color — purple, of course. Special touches in the living room, such as the custom banding on the sofas and an old PO box set into the fireplace stone, add interest. A traditional Italian glass chandelier contrasts with some of the more contemporary furnishing.

but also for how I live and entertain now

with grown children and their spouses,

friends and my granddaughter. The floor

plan was very important and I spent

the necessary time with my architect to

be sure it was perfect for how I live. I

wanted the dining area to fit all of my

family in the same room for the holidays.

Having spaces that are used daily was also

important, not separate rooms used only

a few times a year. A first-floor master

bedroom and walk-in closets were high on

my priority list. A screened porch to enjoy

the weather and the view of the horse farm

across from my house lot was a must, but

it also had to be large enough to really

entertain out there.

Often clients come to me with

their floor plans complete. They have

chosen a stock plan or even had a custom

one designed, but had not thought about

Planning details such as furniture placement and window treatments prior to breaking ground on a new home means no surprises. The traditional dining room furniture continues the neutral color tones and recessing the china cabinet provides more living space. It also allows for special placement of cherished family heirlooms, such as those Denise brought from her previous home.

Page 11: INTERIOR DESIGN Edition LATE SUMMER 2015 BUILDING DESIGN · Interior Design Edition 8 Designer at Home Saratoga designer on her newly built home ... 4 Publishers’ Note 6 Supplier

`CAPITAL REGION BUILDING & DESIGN LATE SUMMER 2015 11

how that floor plan really applies to their

lifestyle. I spent a lot of time in advance

going over all the details.

My grandmother’s antique pieces

were coming with me and I made sure I

knew where they were going to be placed

within the floor plan. I wanted to know

where everything was going upfront.

Some of my clients will say “I’ll find a

place for it later.” But doing furniture

layouts in advance of deciding on the final

floor plan is an important step that many

skip. They come to me with a plan and

are surprised at what furniture actually fits.

Plan, plan, plan. As sales

representatives came in rolling out their

beautiful new fabrics and wallpapers,

the designers at our office and I gathered

up favorites to use in my home as we do

for all clients. Since all the furnishings

and the window treatments were planned

at the same time as the new-home

selections I could see the total picture

before making final decisions. I planned

a bonus room for the grandchildren to

play in around a wallpaper that I fell in

love with. Sometimes clients want to

wait on furniture and window treatments

until the home is done. It’s so much more

productive to have it all selected at the

same time.

Work with professionals. Try the

latest product introductions. Do not be

afraid! I tried a new exterior color from

the manufacturer and I love it. I often tell

clients that when they go to professionals

listen to their suggestions. You don’t have

to see a home done in the exterior color

you are choosing. The designer can tell

you if it is going to look great.

I furnished the home with my

new color scheme of neutrals in the main

Kitchen perimeter cabinets in a soft gray and contrasting wood-tone cabinets on the center island are topped by marble countertops with a honed and leathered finish that are complimented by the tile backsplash. Stainless steel appliances round out this gourmet kitchen. Inset: Reclaimed wood from an old barn was used on the mudroom bench.

It’s often hard to make so many

decisions within the time allotted for new

construction. Start collecting ideas early

and keep them in a binder for reference

so that when things get to the busy stage

you won’t forget. I have an old PO box

that I received as a gift set into the stone

of my fireplace, reclaimed wood from an

old barn on the mudroom bench, custom

banding on the bottom of the living room

sofas. All these details are what make

the home interesting to me. They are the

items that visitors comment on, the details

that make the home more than a new white

box.

Denise Palumbo is co-owner of Plum & Crimson Fine Interior Design in Saratoga Springs.

spaces with, of course, purple for my

accessories. I took my own advice and

stayed more neutral with the base items

and had fun with the color and trends in

the items that can be replaced through the

years. I had a scheme in mind and stayed

with the plan. I did my homework and

didn’t get sidetracked when a different

look or color caught my eye at a supplier’s

showroom. I could appreciate all the

beautiful options, but knew they were for

someone else.

My kitchen has soft grey cabinets

on the perimeter, this is a very “in” color

now. I have always loved grey so I won’t

tire of it, for me it wasn’t selected because

it’s a trendy color. There were tiles I had

been coveting at the tile store that I knew

would find a place in my new home. A

search for the perfect purple marble for

my master bath and something striking

and unusual for the kitchen countertop had

me looking in three states for the perfect

stone. I settled on a marble with a honed

and leathered finish. I love it!

In my master bedroom all the trim

and custom panels are painted the same

shade of purple. No stimulating lines of

contrasting painted trim. The wall-to-

wall carpet and floor-to-ceiling drapes

are the same color as the walls, but create

interest through the textures. So the room

feels cozy in all one color. A darker silk

purple area rug grounds the space. This

use of wall and trim painted one color is

very visible in magazines now. It’s ONLY

paint, so if I tire of this look it’s easy to

change. I chose a medium hardwood hand-

planed flooring through the main living

areas and bedrooms. This is a very popular

look now, but still classic so it won’t go

out of style next year.

Light fixtures typically are selected

at the end of the process. I know how

important the fixtures are and how much

personality they add to the space. Since

my furniture plans were done in advance

I knew where to have the pendant light

hung over my nightstands and I added

a traditional Italian glass chandelier in

front of my stone fireplace and above

my contemporary coffee table to create

an eclectic look – different styles with a

coordinated color scheme.

Opposite: In the master bedroom Denise used one shade of purple for the walls and trim. The carpet and window treatments are the same shade as the walls, but create interest through the texture. The spa-like master bath features a variety of interesting tiles in the large shower and on the floor.

Left: Favorite colors were selected for this special bedroom for a visiting grandchild to spend a night.

Showhouse on the Hudson5 OF 17 BEAUTIFUL SPACES OVERLOOKING THE HUDSON RIVER

IN A HOME THAT EVOKE MEMORIES OF DAYS GONE BY — A 2015 VANGUARD-ALBANY SYMPHONY BENEFIT

On a ledge overlooking the Hudson River behind a tree-lined shore where one can sit

and watch the pleasure and commercial vessels pass by sits Rockledge, a 111-year-old, 6,000 plus sq. ft. home. In May 2015 it served as the 2015 Vanguard Designer Showhouse, a benefit for the Grammy Award-winning Albany Symphony Orchestra.

Rockledge has gone through a number of remodels and updates over the years, but none so breathtaking as those by a team of interior designers who set out in March to transform some dated spaces into bright and elegant living areas. Of the 17 spaces five were chosen here as representative of the event.

THE MASTER SUITEBy Kristina Ellis, KD Ellis Interiors

In keeping with the age of the home, traditional elements were incorporated

into the design of this space. Crown molding as well as picture molding were added for architectural detail. The picture molding is presented in a modern way with wallpaper within each panel, adding texture and visual interest.

One of the focal points of this room is the fireplace. This was brought back to life by distressing the original mantle and stripping off the many layers of paint from the brick. The fireplace was then re-grouted and a light paint wash in neutral tones was added to the exposed brick. The effect draws your eye to the now inviting area where two chairs sit waiting to be relaxed upon.

Another focal point of this beautiful room are the long windows overlooking the Hudson River. Imagine waking up and looking out onto this wonderful view!

The window treatments are stunning, but neutral, adding to the beauty of the view.

The fabric and wall paper choices are all from Thibaut. Established in 1886, Thibaut is the nation’s oldest continuously operating wallpaper firm.

MASTER CLOSET

No master suite is complete without a master closet. This adjoining

space goes above and beyond. It is a dressing room that can be customized to fit anyone’s individual needs. The color schemes of the dressing room are consistent with the master bedroom. A velvet ottoman centers the room with a chandelier overhead.

DINING ROOMBy Paula McCormick, Paula McCormick Interiors

When I first decided to paint this dining room black I could sense

the hesitation of many of the people I mentioned it to, but I could not have been happier with the results. I wanted this dining room to be inviting, to welcome everyone to the table and entice them to linger just a bit longer with conversation, dessert or just enjoying the views. In the warmer months you could open the French doors and let in the breeze. I chose a more formal fabrics to mix with a more casual dining table and chairs.

The bulkiness of the table legs help anchor the dining space. The rug has a more natural and less formal feel, but the new sconces I chose add a bit of glamour and romance to this room. Yet they match the homeowner’s existing crystal chandelier. I also added the molding around the sconces so that the dining room and sitting room complemented one another.

The combination of all of the lux fabrics used in the fabrication of the window treatments and custom cushions really helped bring my design vision to a reality.

Thomas Paul Construction built the molding design on the ceiling for me to really finish off this design space. The silvery color I selected adds to a little of the romantic look found in the lighting of this room.

SITTING ROOM

My vision for this room was to create a beautiful and inviting sitting room

where the family could play a board game on a rainy day, one could curl up with a good book in the window seat and enjoy the tranquility of the water views, or sit back and relax in comfy wing chairs in front of the fireplace at the end of a busy weekend.

As a designer I am inspired by many things. The water views inspired me to

paint the ceiling in this space a rich dark blue. The tranquil colors of water inspired my tile selection for the new glass tiles I had installed in the recessed hearth of this fireplace. The wall covering I chose goes with the style of this home yet allows for new design elements to be incorporated into the fabrics, window treatments, trims, furnishings and accessories.

I based the majority of my design around the great window seat and view. I chose fabric panels in a light colored silk fabric with soft stripes of accent colors,

which you will see throughout my space. My contractor fabricated the great

wood cornice, which I had painted a soft ivory to match the trim. This cornice extends the window and the longer panels really draw your eye to the gorgeous view. The balloon accent shades add just a touch of softness and the custom cushions I designed as well as the custom pillows really do invite you into this space. Similar design patterns are found on the tiles, fabrics as well as accessory pieces.

Thomas Paul Construction also fabricated the beautiful panel boxes and fireplace panels and created the amazing divider between the Sitting Room and the Whiskey Pour Room. It not only enhanced the small existing knee walls, but added a gorgeous feature that mimics the design elements throughout this home.

MUSIC ROOM By Jae Schalekamp, MIN Studio

The colors and the textures of rustic Adirondacks are well balanced with

clean and modern lines.

By painting the wall color extended to the outer frame of vaulted ceiling and the base-board (in high gloss), the ceiling height was visually raised. The center of the vaulted ceiling was painted in dark high gloss in order to accentuate reflected chandelier light, thus further raises the ceiling height.

The picturesque view, framed by the windows, is dressed in sheer panels of natural woven fiber, which was traditionally hand-spun and hand-woven in South Korea. The fabric was natural-dyed: light brown in coffee, pink in red bean, orange in clay, and the grey in sumi ink. The stripe color combinations on the border were playfully arranged and hand- sewn. The window panels can be easily moved to block the sunlight, depends on the direction of the sun, while keeping the beautiful river view open.

All lamps in the room were custom made specifically for this room. The wooden floor lamp was made of a salvaged organ pipe, which was paired with steel floor lamp to create more sculptural ambient lights. The small organ

pipe is placed on the wall as an accessory to show the original state of the organ pipe.

The carpet color wasn’t working for the design of the room. As replacing the carpet wasn’t an option, the designer had it cleaned and hand-painted to tie everything together for the color scheme of the room, using textile medium and air fixative.

The charcoal that was used as part of the decoration is also from Korean traditions, which is used for clarifying water and air. When displayed in a container of water, it also functions as a humidifier.

The paintings are works of the designer, who is also an artist and a textile designer.

Seeking design inspiration?

There are many different ways to get inspired when you are thinking of designing a bath or kitchen for your home. One way is to stroll the aisles at the box stores and see

various lines of cabinets, hardwood flooring, tiles and appliances. If you are already working with a builder, they may take you to their design center where you have the option of choosing the finishes and selections from their array of products. However, most people seem to do much of the research online or use home and design magazines or idea books. What better way to get ideas than to see what others may have done with a similar space or style of home.

As an architectural photographer my job is to portray the designer’s or architect’s vision in an interesting and helpful way to showcase their work, which then might be seen in one of those home and design publications that inspire you. Or it may be used for a design award submittal, where both the project and the photograph are being judged. It’s critical for me to provide them with a useful and professional image, not only for a design award, but for their own company website and marketing materials.

I recently had the opportunity to photograph the home of one of our own local designers and a contributing writer to Capital Region Building and Design. Denise Palumbo, co-owner of Plum and Crimson Fine Interior Design of Saratoga Springs, turned her newly built home into a comfortable and personal space. It was interesting to see how a talented designer, who sees many of the latest trends, used interesting paints and fabrics as well as lighting and accessories to personalize her home. Be sure to read the article in this issue.

Enjoy the wonderful summer season here in Upstate New York. If you are a builder, designer, architect or a hospitality establishment, now IS the time to photograph any of your work while we are blessed with the wonderful weather and foliage this time of year offers.
