Plumbing, the question becomes how toaccess that water. Design industries havethrived on channeling water mostefficiently. And beautifully through thefixture of a house. The primary twomethods through which stunning beautycan be achieved are sinks and showers.Considering how to bring the essentialelements out of the woodwork is thebasis for making a house a home.

F a u c e t s Water turns on and water turns off.One knob is for hot and the other cold.Faucets can be as straightforward as you like, but theindustry is such that faucets neednot be as basic as one mightthink. Many of the largerplumbing hardware companiesoffer an enormous array of faucetdesigns. Certain models are moreappropriate for kitchen sinks justas others may be best suited forbathrooms, showers and tubs. Most are far more elegant indesign than those found in alaundry room. Materials for faucet unitscan vary as well, depending onthe style sought to bestcomplement a room. Chrome, white or almond enamel, polished brass, and any array of othercolors can ideally suit the sinkenvironment.

S i n k s Variety in sinks is as distinct as thefaucets that fill them. The utility room, bathrooms, and kitchen all demandunique designs to best accommodatetheir purposes. Kitchens - Dual chamber sinks bestserve the kitchen and utility rooms.Separate water containers allow users to

use one side for washing and the otherfor rinsing. One long-neck faucet or asnake-extension can reach to all areas ofsuch sinks, thereby simplifying any workto be done. In the kitchen, cast iron assembliescombine heartiness with elegance forutilitarian attractiveness. For smallerkitchens, dual chambers in-cornerinstallations extending out alongperpendicular counter space. Cornermodels allow otherwise wasted space tobe more readily utilized. When a great deal of cooking is

involved, triple bowl designs can saveboth time and energy of the cook. Usingone chamber for used pots and pans, acentral chamber for disposal, and thethird for washing food, the kitchen canremain tidy throughout the most involvedmeal preparations. A consideration to make whilelooking into both large and small sinksis how well the unit contains water. Self-rimming sinks keep messes to aminimum, eliminating the frustrations

that come with casings that angle out-ward. It is better to overestimate theamount of water you expect to use - thatway, no surprises will leave you withdifficult water spots surrounding yoursink. Bathrooms ask for smaller sinks. When trying to establish a historical feelwithin a modern home, upright stand-alone units can be the perfect fit. Pedestallavatories come in a wide range of styles-the perfect match simply requiresbrowsing a few specialty companycatalogs.

Countertop lavatories arecurrently more common. Setinto bathroom shelving andcounters, these also come in anarray of styles, any number ofwhich can serve the purposeof those who seek to dress uptheir bathrooms or follow upon custom visions. Bathroomfixtures of china offer a classicelegance, though ceramiccovered cast iron styles givelasting durability.

S h o w e r s Different materialsprovide effective molds forshower or shower/tubcombinations. Acrylics can bevacuum formed from solidsheets to create seamless one-

piece units. Acrylic surfaces are strongand resilient, and the smooth contoursenabled by the single-piece molds makefor gentle bathing experiences. Gel-coated fiber-glass utilizes afiberglass base covered by sprayed-ongel coating. Extra reinforcing can beused in higher stress areas. Features toseek include favored curves in the molddesign, adequate shelving to meet theneeds of an individual, couple, family,or guests, and beautiful tiles or back wall

portions of the entire unit to help make everyshower an aesthetically enjoyableexperience. Options that dress up a shower caninclude anything that comes to the mind ofthe homeowner. Some possibilities includedome lights; mood lighting creates instantambiance in a shower. Changing the bulbor filtering lens can provide a color of choicefor any occasion. Another consideration isthe hand-held shower head. Adjustablespray nozzles can transform a shower fromthe massage of a pulse spray, to the gentle

cascade of a fine mist When trying to establish a historicalfeel within a modern home, upright stand-alone units can be the perfect fit. Pedestallavatories come in a wide range of styles, the perfect match simply requires browsinga few specialty company websites. Countertop lavatories are currentlymore common. Set into bathroom shelvingand counters, these also come in an arrayof styles, any number of which can servethe purposes of those who seek to dress uptheir bathrooms. Grab bars along the sideof a unit along with textured floors aidbathers in maintaining balance and a slipfree environment

S h o w e r F r a m e s The most visible feature of the showeris the door. Frameless or framed, in silver, gold, or another color, careful thought shouldbe given to the most efficient and flatteringdesign. Extruding lines are common onunpolished aluminum frames. Flushframework can be most attractive though itcan warp over time, depending on the qualityof material used. The glass within the frameis another consideration. Thickness of thetempered glass affects clarity of vision aswell as durability of the structure. Thefollowing glass options can be found at

shower specialists: Clear, Glue, Chip,Obscure, Rain, Reed, Smooth, and RoughT u b s One problem with baths has been thetendency for water to cool during the courseof the experience. Through-out the historyof the bath, the only way to maintaintemperature was to add boiling or near-boiling water to the tub while bathing, orkeep the faucet running to balance the ratioof lost heat with incoming water. Technologyhas changed all that for bath-lovers. In-lineheaters come part and parcel with certainwhirlpool units and bathtubs. Warming re-circulating water keeps water temperature

WATER, WATER,EVERYWHERE (CON’T)

steady, allowing bathers to self-determine when the bath should end, rather than forcing them out of the tubwhen the water lowers to roomtemperature. The tub industry has embracedtechnological developments wholeheartedly. Whirlpools, jets, andimproved lumbar supports are onlysome of the basics to look for in newtubs.

E s s e n t i al s Taking the time to dress upessential elements means thedifference between an impersonalhouse and a well-loved home. Thedifference is in the details. Look atfixtures and installations in housesand hotels alike to establish favoredpreferences. Then, by browsingonline or visiting home-makingstudios, it becomes easy to customdesign dreams. (END)

iring an interior design professional canoften be compared to interviewing for a new

relative. This new relative is going to get to know youand your family intimately. As a design professional Iwill learn about your lifestyle, your habits, yourpriorities, your entertaining, your daily schedule, youridiosyncracies, and your private life. We must create arelationship of mutual trust. The success of this effortis as much dependent upon you, the client, as it is onme and my staff. Most clients don’t like to discuss theirbudgets, but you really have to be comfortable withtalking about this with your design professional in orderto get started. The Art of Placement’s designprofessional can give you accurate estimates, but theseare only as good as the information you provide. Thisis an investment in your comfort and lifestyle and hasa significant return over time.

Designs done well can improve your health, deepen your relationships, nurture your career, transform your image, and provide time for passionatepast times and pursuits. When done right furnishings, rugs, artwork, accessories and even lighting becomeinvestments not costs. These purchases can be re-arranged room by room and will move with you to yournext home.

There are many guidelines to make yourproject run smoother, whether you are working with adesigner, contractor, builder or any other contractor.
