REpORTCApTAIN’s reportAs corny as what it sounds, what has happened

to January!

Welcome back everybody from what I hope was

a wonderful and very blessed Festive Season.

For me the holidays were particularly special

because I, at last, experienced the sheer

exhilaration of a hole in one! This much awaited

golfers dream happened on number 8 at

Southbroom Country Club on the Natal Coast

and after witnessing five playing partners get

a hole in one, it was awesome to experience

it myself.

In the meanwhile Konrad Zastrau was showing

Ernie the lines at Oubaai, Eric Nel qualified for

the SA Open to be played at Oubaai in February,

Jacques and Liezel welcomed Master Wickens

into the world and our very own Mielie became

a dad! So never a dull moment for Centurion

and should there be anything that you would

like to share, please make sure it gets to any of

the committee members.

The year-end also saw the Green Keepers

Revenge and a great Caddy Golf Day which

was won by James Dee. Well done!

The National SA under 15 Boys tournament

started the year off with golfers representing

all the provinces and close on its heels, we

welcomed the Sunshine Telkom PGA tour

to our pristine course. Once again it was a

pleasure to welcome Mr Godfrey Ntoele and

the prestigious tournament to Centurion as

we extend our sincere appreciation for their

continued support. The event was won by Oliver

Bekker from Stellenbosch on an incredible 20

under. Awesome golf!

By the time you read this, we would have

enjoyed Sikkel’s Golf Day, experienced the

excitement of night golf and there will be new

Mixed Open Champions so till next time when

I have all of this to share, make this year count

and happy golfing!

REpORTCApTAIN’s reportLady

Welcome back after a most deserved break. Trust you all had an enjoyable Festive Season. I am looking forward to another successful year with the ladies section. We started the year off with the Open Mixed being played on Sunday 27 January 2013, we had a full field so I am sure it was a great day enjoyed by all of us who took part.

On 19 December 2012 Dee and I hosted the Irene Homes Christmas lunch held here at the clubhouse. Each year Centurion Country Club treats 40 ladies who are resident at Irene homes and don’t have the privilege of sharing Christmas with their families. Amarille and her staff once again did Centurion Country Club proud by serving a delicious 3 course meal. Each lady was treated to a little gift which was received with such gratitude. To see the pleasure that hosting this lunch brings to all the ladies is just so heart-warming. Before the ladies left to go home they passed on their thanks to Dee and myself for the lunch by singing a thank you song sung by two of the ladies in several of the official languages, well this just made it all worthwhile, that was a truly a very special moment for me.

The Thursday Ladies group held our Christmas lunch at ‘River Meadow Manor’ in Irene on 29 November 2012. Twenty ladies attended the lunch, we were treated to some gourmet food, it was a great venue. Two of our members Johanna and Koko spoilt all of us with a goodie bag, one of the gifts inside the bag was a fan which was really appreciated as it was a very hot day. Thanks Johanna and Koko for this kind gesture.

On 13 December 2012 we held the ‘Thursday Ladies’ prize giving on the patio of the club. Several prizes were given out. The winner of the Eclectic trophy for the best gross medal score over the year went to Elize Visser with a score of 71, the runner up was Hayley Mendes with a score of 74 and in third place was Sue Smith with a score of 75. The Points Eclectic winner was Rene Seidel with 57 points, runners up were Johanna Rathete, Dee Meredith and Hayley Mendes who all tied on 53 points. The Trophy’s for the best average points over the entire year went to Dalene Smith (handicap 0 - 27) with an average of 34 points, the winner for handicap 28 - 36 went to Anna Skinner with an average of 25 points, a great mother and daughter team. We then took all the birdies off the tree, put them all in a box and pulled names out of the box, there were 3 birdie tree winners each received R100 they were Suzie Heggland, Dee Meredith and Hayley Mendes ( I didn’t do the draw - promise!) Congratulations to all our winners.

The first week of January 2013 saw the SA Boys U15 tournament being played here at our prestigious club. I spent a couple of hours going round the course watching the boys play. There were boys of all different ages and from all the provinces competing against each other. They ranged from about 10 up to 15 years of age. Some amazing golf was played, there really is some talent out there, it was great to see that so many youngsters are taking up the game. When I was a child I always thought that golf was an old man’s game, well how wrong was I. I got to chat to some of the parents who were walking the course following their boys progress, they had nothing but praise for the pristine condition of the golf course, thanks has to go to Joey du Toit, Petrie and all the ground staff on a job well done. The tournament was won by one of the older boys taking part Keelen van Wyk from Western Province.

As I write this article the Telkom Pro Am is taking place here at Centurion Country Club. I am very fortunate as lady Captain to have received an invite to play in this great event. Dee Meredith, Joey Du Toit and myself will be teeing it up with a pro tomorrow. This will be the 3rd time I have played in the pro-am. Each year is just as exciting

for me as the first time I played. We are very fortunate as a club to be able to host a tournament of this magnitude that is part of the Sunshine tour each year. Thanks goes to the sponsor Telkom Business for choosing to use Centurion Country Club.

The ladies leagues are now under way. Dee Meredith is the league coordinator. The ladies scratch league played their first game against Akasia last week and drew. The Saturday ladies league kicked off this past Saturday at home against Blue Valley, all three pairings were up in their matches but nature interfered, the rain came down and put an end to the match, it has be replayed later in the season.

Have a great golfing month.

Regards

Hayley Mendes

After some windless days at the NOMADS SA Boys U15 Championship the players were greeted by overcast skies and a bit of wind. This made the golf at the beautiful Centurion Country Club a little tricky with the best score of the day being recorded by Emilio Pera (Central Gauteng) with a 1 under par 71, to finally end in 4th position.

The leaders started somewhat jittery on the last day with the overnight leader Keelan van Wyk (Central Gauteng) having two double drops on the

first 6 holes, at the par 3 3rd and par 4 6th. A fighting 35 on the homeward nine allowed him to finish on 75, a clear winner by 3 shots. His return of 6 under par 282 shows that he is a player to watch for the future.

The runner-up, Jonathan Whitehouse (Central Gauteng), could not take advantage of Keelan’s earlier mistakes, also having two double drops on the first 6 holes, at the par 4 2nd and the par 4 6th. He finished the day with a round of 76.

The joint 1st round leader, Dylan Naidoo (Central Gauteng), had a final round 78 which included an 8 at the par 4 9th – this after having an eagle 2 here the day before! The 5th position was filled by Dylan Mostert (Ekurhuleni) who had a well played 73.

The team event was won by Central Gauteng A with Central Gauteng B 2nd and Gauteng North 3rd.

SHAvE OR SpRAY at a Shopping Centre

Saturday, 2nd March 2013It’s our 10th Shavathon this year – come and celebrate the Shavathon of the decade with us – bring 10 family members, friends or colleagues along to shave or spray in solidarity with cancer survivors, on Saturday, 2nd March 2013. This year we are adding exciting colour hair gels to the mix!

Where: your local participating shopping centre

You can find a list on www.shavathon.org.za.

How much?

Adults can shave or spray their head for a donation of R50 (or more) and children, under 12 years old, for R25. You can pay cash at the venue or to fast track the process you can make an online donation in advance and take your confirmation e-mail to the venue as proof of payment.

Want to help?

You can also volunteer in these ways to help make Shavathon 2013 a resounding success:

• At your local shopping centre’s Shavathon

Event: assist with spraying, shaving, running errands, public registrations, etc

• OrganiseaShavathonEventinyourworkplace,school or institution

• Raise funds by creating your own onlinefundraising project for Shavathon

What time will a Shavathon be held?

A public Shavathon event, at a shopping centre, is usually open to the public from 09h00 to 15h00, but may be extended to 16h00. It is advisable to arrive early to avoid disappointment. Please contact the shopping centre beforehand to confirm the times that the Shavathon will take place, as this may differ from place to place, and confirm whether or not the Shavathon will continue on Sunday, 3rd March 2013, as well. (Not all venues will be offering the extra day).

What happens after i’ve made a donation?

• Afterregistrationandmakingyourdonation(or

producing proof of your online payment), you will be asked to move to the area where your head will be shaved or sprayed. You can choose the length of your shave or the colours to be sprayed.

• Please take note that CANSA Shavathon willno longer do a ‘clean shave’ due to risk factors – the lowest number you can shave is a number 1.

• If you would like to donate your ponytail, ourvolunteers are equipped to accept your hair donations – they will snip it and package it for you! Please remember that your hair must be 22cm or longer, clean, dry and free of permanent colour, bleach or other chemical treatments to be donated.

• The process could take between 15 to 60minutes depending on the queue.
