Wegmans Food Markets, founded as a produce company more
than a century ago, has stayed true to its roots—a long history of partnering with local farmers to offer customers the freshest, best produce. Realizing that customers want to know where their food comes from, Wegmans seeks out family farms near our stores, not just for produce, but for locally sourced beef, pork, and seafood as well.
Sourcing local and regional food is part of our commitment to making a difference in every community we serve. We have an established network of partner farms we work with in Virginia, and throughout our markets, but we’re always looking to cultivate new relationships to offer our customers a growing selection of locally and regionally sourced food.
We look for talented farmers who are passionate about what they do and meet a standard set of criteria. Quality, consistency, farm infrastructure and transportation, and Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) Certifications, are just a few of the things we look for. We then examine the products the grower can provide us, whether it’s for one or two stores, or the entire company.
Our Near Our Stores program is truly about partnership. Our Wegmans team members stay closely connected with our farm partners throughout the growing season and all year round. They are an extension of our family, and they help make it possible to provide our customers with the best and freshest local produce.
To learn more about Wegmans Near Our Stores program, visit the ‘About Us’ page on Wegmans.com.
Farmers interested in learning more about working with Wegmans can contact:

FARMS
by Abby Chan and Kate Moody
In 1992, Krista and Rob Rahm bought Forrest Green Farm without intending to become farmers. Instead, the couple wanted to
raise their children close to nature and live sustainably off the land in a lifestyle they now call “whole living”. Twenty-six years later, they’ve not only embraced whole living, but have grown it into a successful business.
After years of making farming their full-time occupation, the family has shifted the focus of Forrest Green Farm to education. They aim to teach others to live as sustainably as possible through season-long Whole Living workshops, specialized classes, as well as hosting a Farm and Herb Festival on Memorial Day, where the only requirement for vendors to participate is to teach a skill.
Whole Living has become so popular on the Farm that it’s grown into a three-part season-long series, where they lay the groundwork for healthy living. Whole Living Year 1: From the Ground Up shows students the fundamentals of Whole Living, creating a knowledge base for working with herbs safely, focusing on nutrition, seasonal eating, and how to integrate foods and herbs into our daily lives. Whole Living
Year 2 expands on the foundation for herbal knowledge and instills a sense of confidence in students to grow, nourish, and treat themselves, their family, and friends. Finally, Whole Living Year 3 focuses on how to identify and understand plant families and how this relates to their medicinal uses.
The Rahms don’t wish to keep their successes a secret and instead place an emphasis on quality and helping others reach their own goals. They frequently work with other farmers, sharing soil recipes, farming and gardening practices, and other strategies to continue learning and improving the Whole Living lifestyle.
Today, the farm boasts over 400 varieties of herbs, vegetables, pasture-raised chicken, beef, eggs, herbal teas, personal care products, and registered Miniature Hereford cows, but their emphasis remains on education. And while the Rahms don’t intend to grow larger, they continue to grow their influence in the region, showing everyone how and why to embrace Whole Living.
Come visit Forrest Green Farm to learn more about Whole Living Workshops or visit the farm store year round Thursdays-Sundays 9-5.

NEWS FROM PEC
Communities that are walkable and bikeable are healthier, more
prosperous and more socially cohesive. That’s why The Piedmont Environmental Council (PEC) and the
Thomas Je erson Planning District Commission (TJPDC) have teamed up to make Charlottesville and Albemarle a better and safer place to walk, bike and run. With help from the Charlottesville Area Community
Foundation, we are leading a community process to envision and implement a system of connected greenways for the urban area.
Greenways are multi-use con-nective corridors that link people of all ages and ability to jobs, resources and opportunities. More than recreational park trails, they are vital transportation infrastructure that provide more options for residents and drive socioeconomic activity. They also provide access to the natu-ral world, and can be an integral part of daily life.
More transportation choices means less tra c congestion and a reduced need for (and expense of) roads and parking, plus cleaner air and water. By making settled urban communities healthier, more vibrant places to live and giving residents
more transportation choices, urban greenways can reduce development pressure on rural areas, leaving them for agriculture, forestry and conser-vation.
PEC and TJPDC are in the process of creating a Community Greenways Plan. That document should be ready in the Autumn of 2018. It will lay out consensus values, identify and prioritize
speci c projects. After that, there will be a push for implemen-tation, which is when we will need your help to move from plan to reality. Right now, you can pitch in by learning about what e orts are already underway, and by add-ing your voice to the conversation and sharing your ideas. Visit www.pecva.org/cvillegreenways for more information.
Food brings people together. But healthy food is sometimes hard to come by. Despite
Loudoun County’s reputation as a wealthy community, a surprising number of children in the county — one in 10 — live in households with limited access to healthy food. The consequences can be stark for these children, as their development, ability to learn and overall health is directly related to the quality of their diet.
“The notion that there are around 10,000 children in Loudoun facing a chronic lack of access to su cient nutritious food is troubling, both as a parent and as someone that knows the bounty that Loudoun County has to o er,” says Chris Miller, PEC’s President. “It left me thinking about what resources we could bring to the table. If we can stretch a little, what can we do to educate local resi-dents and contribute to a solution.”
An inspiration for addressing food insecurity in Loudoun came to Chris through his involvement with the Fauquier Education Farm, based in Warrenton. The Fauquier Educa-tion Farm recruits volunteers to plant, harvest and pack fresh produce grown on about 10 acres at Moriah Farm for those in need. This past growing season, more than 60,000 pounds of produce was delivered by the farm to food-insecure residents in Fauquier, Culpeper and Rappahan-nock Counties.
The impact of the Fauquier Education Farm presented a possible model for PEC to make a di erence
in Loudoun County. Over the past couple years, we have worked to restore and reinvigorate the produc-tivity of our Roundabout Meadows property, a 141-acre farm at Gilbert’s Corner in Loudoun County. Over last year, we took a closer look at the feasibility of creating a Roundabout Meadows community farm on part of the land, which would partner with food pantries and other community organizations in Loudoun to increase the availability of fresh produce for those in need.
Key to our assessment was outreach to food pantry operators, such as Loudoun Hunger and other allied non-governmental organiza-tions (NGOs) that already work to address chronic food insecurity among vulnerable populations in the county. We wanted to see if others thought a modest community farm at Roundabout Meadows would make a di erence. The answer to that question was a resounding “Yes.”
Currently, food pantries con-tract with or receive donations of fresh produce from farms, grocery stores and larger food banks. But, a common theme among these orga-nizations was the need to o er more fresh food to their clients. This rec-ognition has focused the attention of county-wide hunger relief e orts for children, seniors and families on expanding the availability of whole-some, fresh, locally-produced fruits and vegetables. And this demand for fresh produce remains unmet.
We envision our community farm being sited at the northwest
corner of Roundabout Meadows, an area planned in PEC’s ve-year management plan for future fruit and vegetable production because of the quality of the underlying soils. We have been fortunate over the past year to receive guidance from Ellen Polishuk, formerly of Potomac Vegetable Farms, in developing a growing plan and identify infra-structure needs. We plan to employ produce variety trials, cover crop practices and other sustainable farm-ing techniques as demonstration projects.
We will be starting small, begin-ning with just a portion of three acres that were cleared this fall for future production. A limited start re ects the need to rst secure necessary infrastructure and equipment, and it helps provide time to rejuvenate
the productivity of the soils. How-
ever, our feasibility study for the
community farm envisions scaling
up production and public educa-
tion programming over the next ve
years.
It’s exhilarating to think about
the possibilities of a community farm
operation at Roundabout Meadows.
With the property’s high visibility,
good access and close proximity to
Loudoun’s population centers, the
community farm presents an incred-
ible opportunity for local residents to
get on the land and see rsthand the
connection between land conserva-
tion, natural resource stewardship
and the food we eat. More impor-
tantly, visitors and volunteers can
have that experience while in service
to those in need.

Composting at home is a great way to reduce your waste while creating the very best thing you can add to your
garden. It’s fun, easy and a pretty forgiving process. A friend told me that she loves back-yard composting because you can put as much or as little e ort into it as you like. Your organic materials will decompose.
What is Composting?Composting is controlling the process of micro-organisms decomposing organic materials into a usable soil amendment. The microbes do the work. You just need to create the environ-ment to keep them happy. They are very simple creatures that just need air, water and organics to decompose.
What can be composted? When I refer to organics, I mean materials that were once living, such as food scraps, yard waste, untreated woods and paper. Animal products (meat, dairy, fats, oils, bones, shells) are compostable, but should be kept out of your backyard compost pile because they will likely attract critters before they decompose.
What equipment do you need? You should start with a kitchen container to col-lect your veggie/fruit trimmings and food scraps
(including co ee grounds, teabags and eggshells) as you generate them. You can buy a kitchen compost bin or repurpose a used container with a lid. For outside, you can buy a compost bin or tumbler. Those are great for small backyards and for minimizing any potential nuisance to your neighbor. Or, you can make an open compost bin with wood or wire fencing. Or, simplest yet you can just make a compost pile. A pitchfork will come in handy too!
Browns vs GreensOne of the core concepts of com-posting is getting the right mix of materials. The right mix will ensure that the microbes that are doing the decomposing are not smothered by rapidly decomposing food (greens), nor are they starving in a pile of dry woody, leafy or paper-based materials (browns). Everytime you empty your kitchen container of food scraps (greens), you should add 3 times that amount in browns. Browns are harder to come by so here are some you can nd around the house: wood chips, old mulch, dried grass clippings, leaves, shredded paper, paper egg cartons, paper napkins/towels, tissues, cardboard tubes, pizza boxes (torn-up), and compostable take-out containers.
How do I compost?Bring your full indoor compost container to your outside compost bin or pile, add it to your com-post. Cover the freshly added food scraps with three times that amount in the “browns” that you have been collecting. When your outdoor bin/container is full, empty it out into a pile. This will help the materials continue to decompose by reintroducing air (the microbes need air!) to the pile. Don’t be surprised if there are bugs or smells when you empty out your compost bin. Sunlight and fresh air will take care of both pretty quickly. If your compost bin or pile is too stinky and liquidy, add more browns. A little bit of steam rising from your compost pile in the morning is a good sign. Heat is a by-product of healthy microbial activity and a sign that you created a working compost pile!
When can I use it?Good things take time. Before you use it for your garden, a compost pile should probably be at least six months old and not feel warm to the touch. The compost won’t go bad if you decide to let it age even longer. When it’s ready, just mix your compost into your garden beds and watch your garden thrive.

Albemarle CiderWorks, in North Garden, VA, grew out of the work from Vintage Virginia Apples‘ owners
and operators, the Shelton Family, in 2009. The orchard itself began as a retirement prop-erty for the family, but quickly evolved as they realized their affinity for heirloom apples.
After participating in various Heirloom Apple Tastings at Monticello, learning from the expertise of Tom Burford, author of Apples of North America, and hearing about all of the many different types of apples that have been lost to public appeal, the Shelton family founded Vintage Virginia Apples. In 2000, they started selling trees and, following suc-cess, Albemarle CiderWorks was born nine years later.
The cidery began with just three ciders and has now grown to feature about a dozen
different varieties. Their ciders are unique as
they are drier than most. They are not blended
with artificial flavors, but rather highlight
the flavors inherent in the fruit. In essence,
Albemarle CiderWorks and Vintage Virginia
Apples are both truly tied to the heritage of
the fruit. Their passion for heirloom apples is
expressed in all elements of their operation.
Today, the emphasis still lies on the apples.
At the orchard, over 200 varieties of apples
are grown, in addition to a small collection
of other fruits. The family both operates the
tree nursery as well as conducts various
workshops to help others start growing their
own apples and creating their own ciders.
Just as the Shelton family has developed a
love for apples, they hope to help educate
and collaborate with orchard enthusiasts and
cider-makers as a way to further cultivate the
growth of historic and diverse apple varieties.
