Fire safetyOur guests are protected by an advanced fire protection system. In the event of a fire, you will be warned by an electronic alarm. This signifies you MUST evacuate the Hotel.

Fire exitsFire exits on your floor are clearly marked but if there is heavy smoke you may have difficulty locating them, so please take the time to observe the following points:Count the number of doorways between your door and the three emergency exits located on every floor. Emergency exits are situated next to the x27 rooms and opposite the x20 and x05 rooms.Check the location of fire extinguishers, hoses and alarms in the corridor of your floor.Fire alarms are located next to each fire cupboard in the corridor.

When evacuating upon hearing a fire alarmTake your room key card and move cautiously.Feel the door and handle with the back of your hand. IF THE DOOR IS ABNORMALLY WARM, DO NOT OPEN IT. IF THE DOOR IS NOT HOT,OPEN IT CAREFULLY but be ready to close it immediately if necessary.Proceed to the nearest emergency exit. Enter the Fire Exitand go to GROUND LEVEL where you will be met by Hotel staff. DO NOT USE THE LIFTS.If your exit is blocked, use an alternative fire exit.

If you find a firePress the Emergency button on your telephone.Leave the building, if possible by entering the nearest safe fire exit. Take your room key card with you.

If a fire starts in your roomEvacuate your room immediately. Take your room key card with you. Close the door securely behind you.Activate a fire alarm and notify your immediate neighbours. Walk to safety via the emergency exit.DO NOT USE THE LIFTS.

If unable to leave your roomRemain calm. Here are some things you should do while awaiting rescue:

Turn off the air-conditioning.Fill the bathtub with water (as a reserve only).Phone your location by pressing the Emergency button.Stuff wet towels and sheets around door seals and air vents. Use the waste basket to bail water from the bathtub if smoke seeps in.If smoke still enters your room, make a tent over your head with a wet blanket. As a last resort, if the air becomes too smoke-laden, it may be necessary to slightly open your window. If the windows do not open, break one with a chair or drawer. Do not open or break a window if smoke or flames are rising from outside from a lower floor.

Special assistanceIf you are likely to require special assistance due to personalphysical limitations, advise Reception upon check-in or press the Instant Service button.

RememberMost fatalities occur from inhalation of smoke and poisonous gases, not from burning. Always stay low to the ground if there is any smoke present at all. Never use the lifts. You may never need to implement this advice, but since you should always be alert for the unexpected, be diligent and always note exits and emergency procedures of any high rise building which you enter.

Experience the best of Wellington with a cruise on the city’s unique harbour ferry service. Up to 16 return scheduled sailings daily between Queens Wharf / Matiu Somes Island / Days Bay. (The Queens Wharf berth is a 2 minute stroll from the InterContinental Hotel). The trip across the harbour takes approx 20 minutes if direct, 30 minutes if calling into Matiu Somes Is.

The two ferries accommodate up to 99 passengers respectively in the comfort of the enclosed main cabins, covered stern deck and open top deck. The ferry has a licensed bar on board serving a full range of refreshments, tea and coffee, snacks, ice creams and wine, beer and spirits.

Additionally, on weekends and public holidays, subject to weather, the Round Harbour Explorer Tours operate via Petone, Days Bay, Matiu Somes Island, Seatoun and Queens Wharf.

Matiu Somes Island - This fascinating Island only recently opened to the public, is a reserve administered by the Department of Conservation. It is steeped in local history from early Maori settlement to more recent times as a prisoner of war camp and quarantine station. Now it is and continues to revert back to its native flora and fauna. Being rodent free the birdlife is amazing and you may even be lucky enough to see the native Tuatara that have recently been reintroduced to the island. The views from all over the easy walking tracks on the island are unsurpassed and not to be missed! Take a picnic and allow at least 3 hours to explore!

Days Bay - One of Wellington’s best swimming beaches set amongst a backdrop of beautiful native forest. Attractions include great waterfront cafes, restaurants and an arts and craft shop. Also the Pavillion in Williams Park opposite the wharf, is renown for its ice creams, a duck pond and easy short bush walks. Eastbourne Village is just a 10 minute stroll around the foreshore with more shops and restaurants on offer. So head over for an ice cream in the park or lunch or dinner on the waters edge at the superb Cobar Restaurant! 2 mins from Days Bay wharf.

Short 2 minute stroll from the Hotel.

Shed 5 was originally built in 1888 as a woolstore and is one of the oldest remaining wharf stores in Lambton Harbour. Situated right on Queens Wharf just minutes from the city centre, Te Papa Museum, the City Art gallery and ten minutes walk to Courtenay Place – Wellington’s bar and nightlife strip.

Shed 5 prides itself on friendly service with an innovative menu engineered to include the freshest seafood and seasonal produce that New Zealand has to offer. The food is matched by an extensive wine list that represents wines from all of New Zealand’s wine producing regions. This combination of good food and great wine is brought together in the ambience of this warm, rustic historical building on the waterfront by a professional team.

Shed 5 is situated so you can enjoy the summer rays under an umbrella on the deck whilst watching fishing boats and yachts come and go. In summer the restaurant’s concertina windows open to let diners bask in Wellington’s sunshine and appreciate a cool sea breeze that the city is so famous for.

The bar is a great place to meet up for after work drinks, watch a rugby game on the large screen, or have a boogie on a Friday night.

At the northern end of the building is a separate, smaller bar – the greenroom – with its own entrance. This is a small cocktail bar with premium spirits and an international beer and wine selection. It is the ideal location for an after-work corporate catch up.

Shed 5 can be transformed from an intimate restaurant to hold large functions. It is perfect as a wedding venue because of the soft ambient wooden surroundings. Fairy lights draped over the rafters, twinkling, give a romantic feel to the building. Shed 5 seats up to 180 guests a la carte but can cater for up to 250 people table d’hôte.

In brief, the venue offers an outside deck and a marquee area, a large bar with its own lounge area as well as an intimate dining room and to finish off a private dining room. All these areas can be treated as separate entities as well as harmonise into one. It is a building to suit all occasions.
