DAILY TRANSITIONS

• RAPS: This stands for Review and Preview. These will generally be writing and

answering questions from the board, overhead, or textbook. This is the most common.

• CRITICAL THINKING: These are open ended questions designed to make you think about a particular subject matter. There are no “right” or “wrong” answers to these.

• VOCABULARY: Vocabulary deals with specific terms from the unit that you are to pay special attention to. For each word listed you are to draw a picture that defines it, define it using words a 3rd grader could understand, and then use it correctly in a sentence.

RAP(Review and/or Preview)

RAP• Magna Carta: first step in

democracy coming back in Europe

• Edward I: King that began Model Parliament

• Charles II: King that signed Habeas Corpus

Under the Agenda, write “RAP” in blue and then answer the questions posed in the “Transition Cloud” Example:

Critical Thinking

Critical Thinking

When I hear the name “Adolf Hitler,” I think of World War II and the Nazi. That name also brings to mind the Holocaust and what happened to so many Jews.

Critical Thinking:

When you hear the name “Adolf Hitler,” what comes to mind?

Writing Notes• This margin allows you space so you can

write down any questions when reviewing your notes. (Extremely important!)

• Any information that might not appear in the overhead notes can be added here as well.

• This space can also be used to create “mock questions” when studying.

CONNECTION

YES! Surround the connection in a black box.

CONNECTIONS

• CONNECTIONS: These create a “mental connection” between what was done in class (i.e. movie, notes, presentations, tests, etc.) and the overall mastery question. These are simple statements where you summarize and explain the daily activities’ importance as it relates to the unit goals.

CONNECTIONS

CONNECTIONToday I learned the various definitions for specific vocabulary words. This will help me with the unit goal because by understanding what each word means I will better understand the notes later on. It is only by understanding the individual objectives that I can answer the overall mastery question correctly. Also, the vocabulary objective acts as a preview for what the unit will cover over the next several weeks.

The “FILL INS”• Geography: This is a required “cut & paste”. You can put this on

either the left or right side. You must have the entire map glued to the page. All maps must be colored and labeled according to the individual instructions.

• Time Outs: This is you taking “time out of your lives” to put something in your journal that relates to what we are learning. These can be cartoons, newspaper/magazine articles, or things downloaded of the Internet. It is important that you explain how it relates to the notes.

• Personal Responses: These are a way for you to communicate with me. You can use these to vent your frustration about something (or even someone) in the class, or to let me know you particularly liked something. You can even ask questions within a Personal Response, but since I only check your journals once a grading period, make sure it’s not a question that needs an immediate answer.

• The Test Prep Page is designed to make you actively study for the unit test or final.

• Using one page (single side) create four vertical columns, labeling them: Names, Dates, Events, and Terms.

• Then starting from the first objective of the unit, you read through your notes writing down all names, dates, events, and terms.

• For each item write a quick phrase reminding you of its significance.

• Each column is independent of each other.
