INTERACTIONAL THEORYPaul Watzlawick

ALL PARTS ARE INTERRELATEDParts of a system are interdependent: they affect one another.

“If you change any part of a system, you change the entire

system.”

Anyone who has had a child understands how one new part(the

baby)in a system (the marriage)

changes all the aspects of the system.

SITUATION 1:

When you have a stomach ache, all body parts are affected.

You can’t act normally due to the discomfort.

SITUATION 2:

SYSTEMS ARE ORGANIZED WHOLESWe cannot understand any part of a system in isolation of the other interrelated parts.

Systems are organized wholes: seen and studied as totality of interacting elements

Therapists wok with disturbed members of the a family; tries to “fix”

the individual who is the problem that’s disrupting the family life.

SITUATION:

THE WHOLE IS MORE THAN THE SUM OF ITS PARTS

Living systems are more than just a collection of the parts that make them up.

KC and Anj met each other the first time as classmates.

SITUATION:

SYSTEMS STRIVE FOR, BUT NEVER ACHIEVE,

EQUILIBRIUMTo maintain function and meet the system’s objective, the members must continually adjust and change.
