Adapting to EnvironmentNatural Selection
Process by which individuals that are best suited for
an environment pass on their unique characteristics to
their offspring
Natural Selection
Natural Selection has no intentions or senses; it cannot sense what
a species “needs.” If a population happens to have the genetic variation that allows some individuals to survive a particular challenge better than others, then those individuals will have more offspring in the next generation, and the population will evolve. If that genetic variation is not in the population, the population may still survive (but not evolve much) or it may die out. But it will not be granted what it “needs” by natural selection.

Adaptations
Behaviors and physical characteristics that help
individuals live successfully in their environments

Three types of interactions among organisms
Competition
The struggle between organisms to survive as they
attempt to use the same limited resources.

Three types of interactions among organisms
Predation
An interaction in which one organism kills another
organism for food.

PredationEffect of Predation on Population Size
If death rate of prey is greater than birth rate then prey
population falls. If prey population falls then predator
population falls. Both population rise and fall in related
cycles.
