And there’s no better place to live it than UAB. Our 86-block

campus in the middle of Alabama’s largest city makes for an

engaging, enticing big-city college experience with all the com-

fort and coziness of home. Stay on campus for great music, art,

sports, education (of course), food (for thought and for stomach),

people, and peace. Or leave campus for more of the same in

different, exciting ways. In the residence hall, in the HUC, in the

Rec, out in the city, way out in the woods—even with classes,

studying, and sleep, you’re looking at about 1,000 hours a se-

mester to fill with things to do. And if you’re bored, it’s because

you aren’t trying hard enough.

It’S Your lIFe

Page 3: Interact - UAB

FeelS lIKe homeUAB’s residence halls are more than just a place to keep

your stuff. They’re your home. They’re a base of opera-

tions for class and activities, a place to relax by yourself

or with friends, a study spot, a party spot, and, yes, a

place to keep your stuff. UAB’s freshman residence halls

offer suite-style living with shared kitchenette and living

room—and private bathrooms, to avoid the traditional

long hike to the communal dorm shower. Blazer Hall and

Camp Hall are comfortable and convenient, just a short

walk from classes and a pajama-clad stumble from the

Commons on the Green dining hall. They feature a movie

room, a game room, study rooms, a 24-hour computer

lab, and that all-important coffee lounge.

UAB offers dining options at all hours of day and night.

In addition to the Commons (and the microwave in your

suite), you can find fast and/or fresh food at the Hill

Center; quick food to go in the BEC, Volker Hall, and

the ASC; plenty of caffeine at the Starbucks in Sterne

Library and Einstein Bros Bagels; and late-night burgers

and comfort food into the wee hours at the Diner. The

nearby Purple Onion, Al’s Deli, Formaggio’s, and other

off-campus locations offer excellent daylight and night-

light casual dining options (and don’t miss the Sunday

brunch at Cosmo’s in Five Points South).

A Sporting Chance

UAB is home to 16 C-USA Division I teams

for year-round sports excitement—with free

admission to all home games for students.

That’s good, because you’ll want to be there

for every one of them. Take a cue from Gang

Green, UAB’s own wigged, face-painted Blazer

fanatics who are always the most enthusiastic

fans in the stands. If you like your school spirit

with a little less shirtlessness and body paint,

you can always join the Marching Blazers,

the Blazer Pep Band, or the cheerleaders or

Golden Girls. Or if you have neither rhythm nor

music—and some of the best of us don’t—it’s

enough just to show up. Find out when and

where at uabsports.com.

Division I sports: Men’s: basketball • baseball •

football • golf • soccer • tennis • Women’s: basketball

the books or the computers.

Lucy’s Coffee and Tea Not

technically a UAB institution, but it might as

well be; a favorite with the health-science

types.

The residence hal ls And not just

in your room, either—first-time freshmen

have access to Blazer Hall’s individual study

areas and Camp Hall’s 24-hour computer

labs, with the dining commons nearby for a

quick pick-me-up.

UAB Min i Park On a nice day,

enjoy the nice breeze and the nice shade of

this little chunk of green space right in the

middle of campus.

The Edge of Chaos It’s not

actually chaotic; it’s just the edge of it. This

comfortable and attractive space on the

4th floor of Lister Hill Library was designed

specifically for bouncing around ideas and

finding inspiration.

The Art of ArtArt and culture are food for the soul—and UAB’s campus has a lot of that food. Students

can gorge their souls on culture at UAB’s Visual Arts Gallery, which hosts really outstand-

ing student work as well as works from internationally renowned artists. The gallery is a

regular stop for many touring exhibits on loan from major museums. More art can be found

downtown at the Birmingham Museum of Art, as well as independent galleries like Naked

Art where local artists showcase their work.

Look to the Alys Stephens Center for classical music, popular music, dance, theatre,

comedy, and regional and national acts—big names and student-priced tickets, right here

on campus. The ASC is also home to UAB student productions, from UAB Opera to Theatre

UAB’s annual Festival of Ten-Minute Plays.

Off-campus, Birmingham—which was named by Gourmet magazine as one of 10 cities

in the U.S. “where the music’s hot and the food rocks”—has indie rock destinations like

Bottletree and Zydeco, large venues like the BJCC, and annual festivals like the Schaef-

fer Crawfish Boil. Even our local restaurants play host to local artists who are bound to

become big names.
