Mission Statement As the Thanksgiving season approaches I think back on the celebrations we had at my house as a child. I’m one of seven children, so when you add our parents, we always took up a lot of space! We usually had aunts and uncles join us for dinner as well. We had to set up a ping pong table to seat all of us together! Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners were the two meals a year that my dad would prepare a turkey, special stuffing, and giblet gravy. I remember breaking the bread the night before to prepare the stuffing. Dad had his own secret recipe for stuffing that eventually he gave to me, but only after “I was old enough to appreciate it”, so he said. Don’t ask me for the recipe, because I’m not spilling that secret! With so many of us, we always had to have a turkey that was about 25 pounds. We would stuff it the night before and get up about 4:00 am to put it in the oven. We would have to baste it periodi- cally until it was a nice golden brown………I think I can smell it cook- ing now! In the morning, while the turkey was cooking, we would boil the giblets (heart, liver, and whatever that other stuff was in the little bag that comes inside the turkey) to make the gravy. Now, it takes a special touch to get the gravy just right; a special twist of the wrist. Even now, I struggle each year to get the right consistency. It seems Dad always got it right. Meanwhile, Mom was busy making everything that goes with a Thanksgiving dinner..….mashed potatoes, rutabagas, stuffed celery, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, and other items too numerous to mention. President’s Message . . . continued from page 1

I was recently in an IASBO Leadership Academy session with pre-senter Tim Cusack. During this session we discussed things for which we are thankful. My first thought was my family. I’m eternally thank-ful for the love and support my husband and daughters provide daily as I venture out to face new challenges. As we shared our thoughts in small groups, someone said they were thankful for their health, as they had gone through a battle recently. Another had lost a loved one and was feeling very alone right at the time the Leadership Academy was to start; he is very thankful for his work family. Someone else treasures the time spent watching his children grow. Yet another person had lost a parent and was feeling a bit lonely. As each of these friends told what they were thankful for, and we all teared up, I was saying, “Yes, me too!” I’m thankful for my family, and my health, my work family, my IASBO family, being able to watch my children grow into young adults, and I treasure the memories of time spent with my parents. As we went around the room and others shared, we continued to find com-mon things that we are thankful for. It just so happens that Tim Cusack wrote a book, Me Too, Extraordinary Everyday Stories that Connect Us. This book takes you through life experiences that we all share; laughing until you cry, feeling awkward or embarrassed, learning a profound les-son from a child and many more. It makes me realize the many things we share that we are thankful for and are finally old enough to appreci-ate. I hope each of you has the opportunity to make memories over the Thanksgiving holiday that you treasure for years to come.

4 - IASBO InterCom November 2016

Did you wake up the morning after the November 8 elections surprised? I bet there are a lot of pollsters looking for new jobs be-cause their predictions were really off. The various races in Indiana were basically done by 10:30 p.m. on election night. Even though he was down in the polls, Eric Hol-comb easily defeated John Gregg to be our new governor next year. The Democrats in the House had hoped to win enough seats to eliminate the super majority. That did not happen. The House for the upcoming session will have 70 Republicans and 30 Democrats. The Democrats needed gain five seats to end the super majority, and they gained only one. In the Senate, the Republicans gained one seat and the count for next year will be 41 Republicans and 9 Democrats. So, the super majori-ties will continue in both houses.

For State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Jennifer Mc-

Cormick easily defeated Glenda Ritz. Again, the polls showed Jennifer trailing Glenda by a significant margin just before the election. Jennifer, Superinten-dent for the Yorktown Community Schools, is an IASBO member and is currently the IASBO Region 6 Director. IASBO thanks Glenda Ritz for her efforts on behalf of the public school students these past four years, and congratulates our own Jennifer McCormick for her victory. She is now work-ing on her transition team and getting ready to start her term as the leader of public education in January. Indiana ASBO is looking forward to working with Jennifer these next four years.

I have had several meetings with key legislators and fiscal staffers in the past few weeks get-ting ready for the 2017 General Assembly. Being a budget year, 2017 will be very important to Indiana ASBO and our members.

The IASBO Legislative Commit-tee has met and will recommend the 2017 legislative resolutions to the IASBO Board of Directors on December 2. The new resolutions will be included in the December issue of the InterCom.

The Republicans will control all of the state-wide offices and the General Assembly when the new members are sworn in after the first of the year. I have always said that whoever is in the State House we will work with. Many of the key legislative players are still there as well as the fiscal staff-ers from past years. Now we wait to see what the education agenda is for Governor-Elect Holcomb and the Republicans in the Gener-al Assembly. Indiana ASBO will continue to monitor the activities in the State House and report back to the membership.

As IASBO President Weedie Smith said so well in her article this month, memories of Thanks-giving dinners and activities are so important. I have those memories from my childhood, and now we are making them with our children and grandchildren. Keep those memories flowing, and always be thankful for all of the blessings we have in this life. Have a terrific and safe Thanksgiving holiday!

“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.”
