Intensified Reproductive Management

Program for Water Buffaloes:

The Triple E Strategic Framework

What is Fixed Time AI or Timed AI?

• Fixed Time AI is synchronization of ovulation not estrus among animals

• Time of AI is fixed after Ovulation Synchronization

• There is no need for estrus detection,

• Tight synchrony of ovulation,

• PGF2-based + GnRH

• OVYSYNCH PROTOCOL is the original ovulation synchronization developed to improve reproductive efficiency in cattle (Pursely et al, 1995),

• Since then, various protocols evolved and up until now researches are actively pursued to further increase FTAI efficiency.

• The reason for the tremendous progress of the dairy industry in the US

• Revolutionized the meat industry in Brazil

Conventional AI vs Fixed Time AI

Conventional AI FTAI

• Synchronization of

estrus

Synchronization of

ovulation

• Needs close heat

observation

Does not need estrus

detection

• Uses PGF2 alpha PGF2 + GnRH

• Ovulation duration :

variable

short

• Lower pregnancy Higher pregnancy

Applications of FTAI in Buffaloes

• Use in repeat breeders/dairy animals

• Managing difficult breeding in heifers

• Creating a contemporary herd, in PC/native buffaloes

for managing breeding and performance data.

• Possibility of facilitating year-round calf and milk

production

• Enhance related reproductive technologies such as

MOET where FTAI is part of the program.

FTAI Protocol for Cycling Animals: FTAI Protocol for Cycling Animals:

OVSYNCH PROTOCOLOVSYNCH PROTOCOL

PROCEDURE :

DAY 0: Inject GnRH to ovulate dominant follicle and start a new

follicular wave (ie: 3-5pm)

DAY7: Inject PGF2a to regress CL (ie:3-5 pm)

DAY9: Inject GnRH to ovulate follicle (ie: 3-5 pm)

DAY 10: Timed AI 14-16h after the second GnRH injection

Characteristics/Parameters of Effective

FTAI Protocol

Must be able to:

• induce estrus (estradiol prod’n)

• achieve the expected ovulatory follicle size

• successfully induce ovulation

• form functional Corpus luteum (CL)

high conception rate

high calf drop
