WHAT IS AN INTELLIGENT SENSOR?
• A sensor that is capable of modifying its internal behavior to optimize the collection of data from external world along with advanced learning capabilities.
OR
A device that combines a sensing element and a signal processor on a single integrated circuit
• Basic integrated electronics (signal conditioning, ADC) • A micro-processor• Logic functions and decision making

Intelligence meaning & How to get it?
The ability to combine
• A priori knowledge (available before experience)
• Adaptive learning (from experience)
Intelligence is introduced using
computational power (microprocessor).

Conventional sensors aren’t perfect?
• Their properties usually change over time, a phenomenon known as drift.
• Poor adaptation to change in conditions or have no intelligence.
• Most sensors require some sort of specialized hardware called signal-conditioning circuitry in order to be of use in monitoring or control applications.
• Standard sensors usually need to be physically close to the control and monitoring systems that receive their measurements

• Quantities that are recognized only by human sensory systems and are not clearly defined cannot be sensed by simple present sensors. For example odor and taste. (E-NOSE)
• Sensing of multidimensional states is difficult. We can imagine the environment as an example of a multidimensional state. It is a widely spread state of characteristic parameters which are spatially dependent and time-dependent

What intelligent sensors can do?
SELF CALIBRATION AND DIAGNOSTICS
• Is the output a reasonable value?• Does it agree with the result of an adjacent sensor?• Is the rate of change of the output reasonable?• Is the output actually changing?
COMPHENSATION
• Adjusting Gain By means of programmable gain amplifiers.• Linearity introduced by means of look-up tables

COMPUTATION
• Signal conditioning (e.g., filtering)• Signal conversion (e.g., analog to digital)• Logic functions (e.g., triggering events)• Data reduction (e.g., feature extraction)• Decision making (e.g., classification)
INTEGRATION
Involves the coupling of sensing and computation at the chip level. This can be implemented using (MEMS),nanotechnology and bio-technology.

APPLICATIONS
Automatic Assembly: • Intelligent Robots have a significant impact upon production speed, capacity and complexity.• Self-repairing are an obvious side-effect of such capabilities.
Smart fabrics and Intelligent textiles :• Material that incorporates clever electronics.• Clothes that monitor your heart, measure the of you chemical composition of your body fluids or keep track and your local environment• Reduce the number layers required by the wearer while remaining suitable for a variety of weather conditions.

SIDEWALL TORSION SENSOR
The sidewall torsion sensor (SWT) was designed and developed by Continental Inc. in Germany.
• It provides information about the forces on a tire that can help the driver handle the dynamics of a vehicle.
• The tire sidewall is magnetized along its entire circumference with alternating north and south poles.
• Both the longitudinal and lateral forces acting between the tire and the road surface cause deformation.
• This deformation and the resulting forces can be estimated based on the alternation of the magnetic poles monitored by two sensors attached to the chassis.
