Cities in India among the most polluted, W.H.O. says May 8, 2014

PM concentration in Delhi exceeds permissible limits

Delhi : PM10 = 229 µg/m3 | Beijing : PM10 = 108 µg/m

London: PM10 = 46 µg/m3 | New York : PM10 = 16µg/m3

Seoul : PM10 = 46 µg/m3 | Sydney : PM10 = 17 µg/m3

Annual average PM10 concentration in major cities (Source: WHO Database, May, 2016)

*Sharma, A., & Chung, C. E. (2015). Climatic benefits of black carbon emission reduction when India adopts the US on-road emission level. Future Cities and Environment, 1(1), 13.

➢ Why Indian vehicles emit excessive pollutants ?

GIST South Korea Project Findings:

Estimated reduction in BC emission with the US emission level

(Ref : Sharma and Chung, 2015)*

51 ~ 175 Gg/year emission reduction

17, 800 Gg BC ~ 0.88 W/m2

If India adopts US emission levels

-0.0025 ~ -0.0087 W m-2 reduction in BC forcing

Cohen and Wang ,2014 ; Bond et. al, 2013

If India adopts US emission levels

51 ~ 175 Gg of BC emission reduction amounts to 0.046–0.159 B carbon

credits

0.046–0.159 B carbon credits equivalent to 0.56–1.92 B US $

Dirty Fuel (High Sulphur, Fuel Adulteration)

Lax Emission Norms

Older Vehicles and Poor Maintenance

Missing Emission Control Technology

Overloading/Congestion

Missing Fuel Economy Standards

Mitigating Air Pollution | Alternatives to Conventional Fuels

IllustrationLife Cycle Assessment (LCA) of vehicle emissions

Selected fuels : Diesel, Petrol, LPG, CNG, Biodiesel, Ethanol, Hydrogen Fuel Cell and Electricity.

Total economic costs (capital costs + operating costs) on per km basis are the highest for battery electric vehicles (electricity fuel).

Combining environmental and economic impacts, hydrogen fuel cell is the best performing fuel technology.
