DementiaA chronic persistent disorder of the mental processes caused by brain disease or injury and marked by memory disorders

basal forebrain

cerebral cortext: conscious thoughtand language

hippocampus: memory storage

Scientists theorize that the culpritsresponsible for the death of the brain cellsresulting from the disease are due toneurofibillary tangles and plaques.

On the left is a healthy brain. On the right shows what has taken place in the advance stages of the disease.

The cerebral cortex forms plaques and tangles.The hippocampus shrinks.The ventricles become enlarged.
