    Sand and Stone

A story tells of two friends who were walking through the desert.During some point of the journey, they had an argument, and onefriend slapped the other one in the face. The one who got slappedwas hurt, but without saying anything, she wrote in the sand:

"TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SLAPPED ME IN THE FACE"

They kept on walking, until they found an oasis, where they decidedto take a bath. The one who had been slapped got stuck in the mireand started drowning, but her friend saved her. After she recoveredfrom the near drowning, she wrote on a stone:

"TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SAVED MY LIFE"

The friend, who had slapped and saved her best friend, asked her, "After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand, andnow, you write on a stone, why?"

The other friend replied: "When someone hurts us, weshould write it down in sand, where the winds offorgiveness can erase it, but when someone does

something good for us, we must engrave it in stone, sono wind can ever erase it."

Learn to write your hurts in the sand and to carve

    your blessings in stone.

The concept of Total Quality Management(TQM) was developed by an American, W.Edwards Deming, after World War II forimproving the production quality of goods andservices.

In the 1950s American industry was enjoying a boom.

Whatever was made could be sold. Few industrialists heededthe work of this man called Deming and his ideas about Total

Quality. In Japan, however, things were different. The Japaneseeconomy was depressed. Goods stamped made in Japan were

known for poor quality and high price.

    TQM Origin

    12/23

Japanese industrialists were very receptive tothe ideas of Deming on TQM and set about

implementing them. By the mid - 1970s Japan

was beginning to seriously undermine itsAmerican and other western competitors. First

in cars , then in the whole range of goodsincluding videos, Hi-fi and computers. The rest

    is a history.

PurchasingThink about artsupplies, books, equipment, meals, sporting

goods, or furniture.Do you have an obligation to provide safe and healthy

    meals?

What about sufficient supplies, equipment or furniture

    for learning?

    Production & Service Provisions

Think about the work instructions or teachingprocedures to ensure some type of consistency

    or uniformity.

How are these controlled, revised, distributed, andvalidated (how do you know they worked?).

Can you trace or track learning (or the lack thereof) to a specific teaching method or event?

    Customer Property

Think about what kids bring to school: coats, notebooks, books, supplies, etc.

Do you have an obligation to care for theirproperty, provide lockers, or control access?

What do you do if an item is damaged ormisplaced?

    Control of Non-Conforming Product

A non conformance can be in the teaching

methods, student behavior or performance, orpurchased items needed for learning.

What do you do with broken furniture, equipment,or lockers?

What is your process for removing it from thelearning process so that it does not hinder otherstudents from learning?

    Corrective Action

What is the process for monitoring, reviewing, and adjusting the learning system as a result of

complaints, comments, or audit findings? Each incident should be tracked, investigated and

    resolved.

A good complaint handling process is the best ways to

instill a culture of continuous improvement in yourorganization.

    Preventive Action

Do you review your methods and makechanges BEFORE you receive complaints?

If you get a complaint your action is corrective, ifyou fix it before you get a complaint than itspreventive.

So what are you doing to prevent complaints?

    Lipstick Kisses

A school head was alerted by the caretaker to a persistent problemin the girls lavatories: some of the girl students were leaving lipstickkisses on the mirrors. The caretaker had left notices on the toiletwalls asking for the practice to cease, but to no avail; every eveningthe caretaker would wipe away the kisses, and the next day lots

more kisses would be planted on the mirror. It had become a bit of agame. The head teacher usually took a creative approach toproblem solving, and so the next day she asked a few girlrepresentatives from each class to meet with her in the lavatory.

"Thank you for coming," said the head, "You will see there areseveral lipstick kisses in the mirrors in this washroom.."

    23/23

Some of the girls grinned at each other.

"As you will understand, modern lipstick is cleverly designed to stay on thelips, and so the lipstick is not easy at all to clean from the mirrors. We havetherefore had to develop a special cleaning regime, and my hope is thatwhen you see the effort involved you will help spread the word that we'd allbe better off if those responsible for the kisses use tissue paper instead ofthe mirrors in future.."

At this point the caretaker stepped forward with a sponge squeegee, which

he took into one of the toilet cubicles, dipped into the toilet bowl, and thenused to clean one of the lipstick-covered mirrors.

The caretaker smiled. The girls departed. And there were no more lipstickkisses on the mirrors.
