Workshop Goals: To provide…• an introduction to American Physiological
Society• a brief summary of the Next Generation
Science Standards and how they should effect your teaching
• APS Six Star Science and Transform a Cookbook Lab
• a brief overview of the LifeSciTRC digital library and how to easily search for lessons/activities and tools to update lab activities

Integrating the Life Sciences from Molecule to Organism
The American Physiological Society
• A summer research experience that includes 7-8 weeks in a member research lab
• Fellows participate in a dynamic and interactive virtual learning community that focuses on exploring effective teaching strategies, understanding the research process, and enhancing teachers materials.
• Guided and open inquiry lessons are modeled as teachers work through a 9 month online program that build skill sets that teachers can continue to use long after their fellowship ends.

Framework for K-12 Science Education Science for All Americans (1989) , Benchmarks for Science Literacy (1993), and National Education Standards (1996)
• describes the major practices, crosscutting concepts, and disciplinary core ideas that all students should be familiar with by the end of high school
• provides an outline of how these practices, concepts, and ideas should be developed across the grade levels.

Only 13 states have adopted the NGSS at this time:
California Delaware
Illinois KansasKentucky MarylandOregon NevadaNew Jersey Rhode IslandVermont WashingtonWest Virginia Washington, DC
So what should you do if your state hasn’t
adopted the standards?

Think about the Framework…all state standards should be based on it!
Scientific and Engineering Practices• Focus on the important practices used by scientists and
engineers.• Engaging in the full range of scientific practices helps students
to understand how scientific knowledge is developed, appreciate the wide range of approaches, and understanding the link between science and engineering.
Crosscutting Concepts• Provide students with ways to connect knowledge from the various
disciplines.• Student’s understanding of these crosscutting concepts should be
reinforced by repeated use in instruction.• Students should be taught the crosscutting concepts in ways that
illustrate their applicability across all the core ideas.

Focus on Student-Centered Learning
Transition away from faculty-centered teaching and presenting all the facts
Move towards clearly articulating expected student learning outcomes and following the students’ progression in achieving those outcomes

APS Six Star Science for Student Centered Learning
• Student centered instruction is at the heart of exemplary science education.
• Valuing diversity among students is a defining characteristic of excellence in science education.
• Integrating technology to enhance learning is particularly important in science education.
• Authentic assessment focuses on both content and process skills.
• Utilizing accurate and timely content information is central to scientific study.
• Reflecting on teaching and learning is essential to maintaining excellence in science education.

To move from cookbook labs
to more student centered labs!
Now it is your turn…
Level 3 = “Cookbook Lab”
Inquiry Rating
Prelab Lab Postlab
Proposes the problem or issue to be explored
Plans the procedure to be
used
Carries out the
procedure
Supplies answers or
conclusions
Lab outcomes determine applications, implications, or
further exploration/ instruction.

Your Mission• Work together with
2-3 other teachers at tables with the materials that are provided.
• Follow the directions that are supplied to complete your transformation activity.
• Be ready to give a short explanation of your cookbook lab rewrite to the group.
• If time allows look at the total activity and discuss the standards that might be addressed.
