About the Practice

Greening the Greenhouse: Designing a Carbon Neutral Future – 2nd April 2008

Creating a sustainability experience, connecting global and local issues

& promoting sustainable ways of living to

safeguard future communities and ecosystems

Integrated Greenhouse ProjectPhase 0 (2003/4)

SEEDA 2003Seed funding - £40k

GreenSys 2004Established partnerships with Professor Gerard Bot and team at Wageningen University, and the renewable energy team at TV Energy

Integrated Greenhouse ProjectPhase 1 (2005/6)

Human Impact Building (ReDiscover/Millennium Commission)

Purpose: To demonstrate sustainable low-carbon greenhouse design, integrated with other buildings

Our Heating Journey… from fossil fuel to local wood chip

... the first public indoor rainforest garden to convert to wood chip heating

The Problem

Unsustainable food/crop production in energy-wasteful greenhouses, using non-renewable energy

Lack of integration of greenhouses with associated buildings for improved energy management

Lack of investment in low-carbon footprint greenhouses

Confusion about what is best practice for producers and consumers

Greening the Greenhouse:“so much for the theory”

• integration part I• continuity of supply• how big is your bunker?• Infinity and beyond, integration part II• No questions please, wait for the

workshop ;^)

Greening the Greenhouse:“so much for the theory”

• integration part I– If demand < capacityBiomB = happiness– If demand > capacityOilB = happiness– If demand > capB < capO = disquiet!

• put both devices ‘behind’ the buffer?• discuss…remember the workshop

Greening the Greenhouse:“so much for the theory”

• In conclusion…• We’re proud of our biomass boiler• We’re going to make it work• Bring on the GSHP!• If we knew then what we knew now …• Workshop anyone?

Thank you! Please contact us if you have any questions.
