Tenth Statewide Conference

Integrating Substance Use, Mental Health, and

Primary Care Services

We are thrilled to be celebrating the 10th Anniversary of the Statewide Conference, held in Universal City, California, at the Hilton Universal Hotel on October 23-24, 2013. In 2000, a collection of dedicated service-providers, researchers, consumers, and other key stake-holders from across Los Angeles County, gathered with the goal of creating a top-notch conference to address co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. They recognized that those suffering from dual disorders were the most disadvantaged and disempowered among us, with multiple and complex needs that our siloed system of care was ill-equipped to address. Through that first conference, they sought to merge science and service, and highlight best practices for delivering competent, sensitive, evidence-based care for these high-need consumers.

Over the past dozen years, this committed collection of individuals has planned and executed nine highly successful conferences dedicated to the delivery of comprehensive and integrated care for those suffering from co morbid health and mental health conditions, and we are extremely grateful for their years of service. In this 10th Statewide conference we hope to continue with the original vision set-forth by the planning committee, with an eye toward the enormous transformation in healthcare delivery taking place in our state as we implement the Affordable Care Act. We will continue our focus on the transformation of systems to improve client care, highlighting the collaboration among our diverse systems, including mental health, alcohol and drug treatment, primary care/health, criminal justice, education, and child welfare.

This year’s conference theme, again, is “Integrating Substance Use, Mental Health, and Primary Care Services.” Plenary and workshop sessions will explore comprehensive screening, assessment, and treatment for individuals with comorbid health and mental health conditions, and will highlight local and national innovative approaches to integrated care. Conference participants will have the opportunity to participate in both didactic and experiential workshop sessions that address the challenges of providing comprehensive and integrated treatment.

The Conference Objectives are as follows: · To identify successful models within existing systems as we move to implement health reform . · To increase collaboration between Substance Use, Mental Health, and Primary Care providers and

agencies. · To identify emerging best practices for treating the complex needs of clients with co morbidities.

The 2013 Statewide Conference is, again, a ‘green event.’ All planning and execution efforts have been done with mindfulness toward our environment and resource sustainability. Conference planning, marketing, publicity, invitations and registration were created with this standard at the forefront. Attendees and Speakers are strongly encouraged to utilize electronic media for viewing hand-outs and materials. Presentations will be available to download prior to the conference on the

conference website.
