ALQ-213 Components
TheAN/ALQ-213(V)ElectronicWarfareManagementSystemdatesbackto1991,whenthefirstversionwasinstalledintheDanishF-16tobettercoordinateonboardEWself-protectionsystemsandtoreducethepilot’sworkload.Sincethen,ithasbeencontinuallyimprovedandupgraded,sothatithasbecomethemostversatilesystemofitskindtoday,beingoperationalonover2000fighters,transportaircraftandhelicoptersworldwide.Duringthoseyears,ithasproveditsvalueinactualcombatsuchasBosnia,Iraq,AfghanistanandLibya.Thisversatilityisachievedthroughacomprehensivesetofsystemcomponentsthatcanbecombinedandprogrammedtomeettherequirementsofanytypeofmissionortypeandsizeofaircraft.
A unique system of its kind
Comparedtosimilarsystems,theALQ-213isuniqueinthefollowingways:
• Itistheonlysystemthatisindependentlybasedonopenarchitecture,andprovidesafirewallbetweenthesensorsystemandtheaircraftavionicssystem.Thisallowsforadditionofsub-systemsandsensorupdatesthataretransparenttotheaircraft,arelesscertificationintenseandlesscostly.
• UnlikemanyothersystemstheALQ-213isnotlockedtoaspecificplatformorEWsubsystem.
• TheALQ-213istheonlysystemthatprovidesflexibleintegrationofmultiplecombinationsofsensors,andcountermeasuressystems:UV,IR,LASER,Acoustic,RF,Chaff/Flare,DIRCM,TowedDecoy,andJammers.
ThecombinationofEWManagementUnit,EWMUandtheTacticalDataUnitisthemostwidelyusedconfiguration.TheEWMUisthecockpitcontrolunit,whichfeedsdatatotheThreatDisplay,theThree-DimensionalAudiosystemandfacilitatesloading/unloadingandrecordingofmissiondatathroughadualPCMcartridge.

FullcolormultifunctiondisplaythatgivesthepilotcompleteinformationaboutthethreatandthestatusofonboardEWsystems.Inglasscockpitaircraft,thisinformationcanbepresentedonexistingdisplays.
TheDAC,DefensiveAidsController,iswellsuitedforlargeraircraftandhelicopters.ItcombinesthefunctionalitiesoftheEWMUandTDUandalsoincludesaProgrammableInterferenceBlankerUnit,PIBU.SincetheDACisplacedintheelectronicsbay,itrequiresremotecontrolPanelRCPforcockpitcontrolandrecording,loading/unloadingofmissiondata.Asmallerversion,“MiniDAC”,isunderdevelopmentinordertomeettherequirementforsmallerandmediumsizeaircraftwithouttheneedforblankingandotherkindsofexpansion.

Revolution in Cockpit Sound Quality and Pilot Situational AwarenessThequalityofsoundinthecockpitbeitfromradios,intercom,warningsignalsorotherssourceshasbeenamuchneglectedareaforagoodmanyyears.Thefollowingsystems,developedandintroducedbyTermacantruthfullybedescribedasarevolutionincockpitsoundquality:
• Three-DimensionalAudioWarningwhichgivesthepilotrealtimeaudiowarningsfromtheexactdirectionofattack.Theresultisaconsiderablereductioninreactiontimeandenhancedsituationalawareness.
• ActiveNoiseReductionandElectricalNoiseReduction,whichreducepilotstressandfatigueconsiderably.
• Radiochannelseparation,whichimprovesintelligibilityandoverallsafetybecauseimportantmessagesarenotlostinsimultaneoustransmissions.
• Directionalintercom,whichimprovescommunication,mutualunderstandingandawarenessamongcrewmembers.
TheimprovementofsoundqualityislargelyduetointroductionofadigitalstereointercomsystemsupportedbyanEnhancedIntercomAmplifier,EIA.ThesystemscanbeinstalledasstandaloneorasanintegralpartoftheAN/ALQ-213(V)EWManagementSystemonalltypesandsizesofaircraft.
Electronic Combat Adaptive Processing, ECAP
FortheEWManagementUnit,EWMU,toprovidemeaningfulsemiautomaticandautomaticoperation,anyautomationneedstomatchverycarefullytacticsapplicabletothespecifictypeaircraft.Since2004,TermatogetherwithEWnationalspecialists,hasbeencreatingadecisionsupportsolutioncalledElectronicCombatAdaptiveProcessing,ECAP,aspartoftheALQ-213system.Inthesametimeframe,newEWSensor/Countermeasurestechnologyhasalsosupportedtheneedforenhancedcoordinationbetweensensorsandcountermeasures.Focusofthecapabilitycirclesaroundoptimizedaircrewawarenessofthreatpicture,optimizedoperationacrosstheEWsuitethroughoutallmissionphasesandreducedpilotworkload.

WiththenewdecisionsupportandimprovedEWsubsystemscapabilities,enablingtheend-userstofamiliarizethemselveswithhowtooperateandgetthebestoutoftheEWsuite,inthecontextof“war”,itwasclearthatthiscouldnotbeachievedthroughtraditionalmethods.Forexample,in-flightengagementsagainstrealthreats(airbornemissilesandfullweaponsystems),whiletraining,areneitherpracticablenorpossible.Therefore,Termacanprovide“fullEWSubsystemSimulation”forun-installedEWsubsystemsandprovide“VirtualWeaponsSystems”againstwhichWeaponTacticscanbetrained.ThiscapabilitycombinationisknownasEmbeddedTraining,ET.Thein-cockpitexperiencerealismandtheabilitytogatherlessonlearnedexperiencefromthein-flightinstrumentationduringPostMissionTrainingDebriefhavebeentheleadfeaturesforfullacceptancebythepilotcommunity.
Extensive testing in different environments
ECAPandETdevelopmenthasbeenaninternationalprojectwiththeEuropeanF-16usersaspartners,andmulti-nationalevaluationtestinghastakenplaceatLeeuwarden,TheNetherlands,Ørlandet,NorwayandEdwardsAirForceBase,USA.TheendresultisanewsetofIn-flightToolsthatensuresthatpilotswillnowbeabletousethemotto,“Wetrainaswefight”andthatincaseofattacksduringrealconflicts,theywillhavethebestdecisionsupportpossible.
AlthoughECAPandETtestingwascarriedoutwithintheF-16community,resultsareequallyapplicabletoothertypesofaircraftequippedwiththeALQ-213.Infact,thecapabilitieshavebeendesignedwithcoreprocessingandmissiondatastrategies,whichmeansthattailoringandre-integrationtootheraircraftplatformsareminimized.TransferofthesecapabilitiesontootherplatformtypeswithintheALQ-213usercommunityhasalreadybeeninitiated.
