ROOFS

Insulation is typically used between and over joists. If using the loft for storage or living purposes it may be better to look at insulating the rafters.

Loft insulation is traditionally laid at the ceiling joist level with the attic space above a cold zone. Building Regulations suggests a minimum installed thickness of 270mm laid in between and across the ceiling joists. This is usually 100mm between and 170mm across. Fitting 2 layers in this way removes the cold bridging of the ceiling joists and ensures there are no gaps in the insulation layer and preventing the escape of warm air into the cold attic space above.

Loft

Rafter insulation is normally installed between, between and under or between and over the rafters to comply with Part L of the Building Regulations. This will create a warm zone below the roof which can be used as a room, hence the term “Room-in-Roof”.

RAftER

Flat roof insulation normally requires a high degree of compression resistance to allow foot traffic for maintenance.

Glass mineral wool is made from sand and recycled glass, limestone and soda ash. These are the same ingredients that are used to make familiar glass objects such as window panes or glass bottles. The glass is spun to form millions of fine fibres. A resin is used to bind the fibres together to form a mat of material. The density of the product determines whether the insulation is a lightweight quilt supplied in rolls, a flexible slab or a rigid slab, and it’s thermal insulation value. Non combustible and achieves the highest A+ Euroclass rating.

Rock mineral wool is made mainly from volcanic rock, typically basalt and/or dolomite. An increasing proportion is now recycled material from slag, a waste product from blast furnaces. The materials are melted and then spun into fine fibres. A resin is used to bind the fibres together to form a mat of insulation. Non combustible and achieves the highest A+ Euroclass rating.

PIR provides premium thermal performance and is more effective than most other traditional insulation types. PIR is made by blending together materials to form a rigid foam insulation product. The heat generated during the reaction enable gases to evaporate and become trapped within cells delivering premium thermal performance characteristics.

Offering superior thermal performance to most products commonly available, PIR is available in an extensive range of thicknesses suitable for a wide range of applications.

Sheep’s wool insulation provides a high performance and sustainable solution to both consumption of energy and the effects of climate change. Wool actually generates heat when it absorbs moisture.

Phenolic foams have a high strength / density relationship as they are lightweight but strong, supplied as rigid foam boards and have the highest density of rigid board products. It has the advantage of being a very thin board.

These consist of multiple sheets of aluminised polyester separated by thin sheets of polyethylene foam. They are lightweight and flexible membranes, to be effective the outer faces must face an unventilated cavity in the construction.

Polyurethane (PUR) insulations are manufactured by chemical reaction between polyalcohols and isocyanates. The mixed components give off heat when they react and form a rigid thermosetting polymer. The heat given off evaporates a volatile liquid blowing agent contained in the mixture which produces a network of small bubbles in the material. The gas from the blowing agent remains in the cells and serves to improve the thermal performance of the material.

Thermal Conductivity (Industrial applications)

Rockwool Rigid, Semi-rigid and Flexible Slabs are high quality resin bonded Rockwool Slabs that can be used for thermal, acoustic and fire insulation. They are manufactured in a variety of thicknesses and densities to suit most requirements. They are suitable for many applications including thermal insulation for floors, walls, roofs and boiler rooms.

Ventilation plant in all types of buildings, offshore platforms and ships, acoustic ceilings and partition panels. Excellent thermal, acoustic and fire insulation.

Rockwool Slabs conform to BS EN 13162: 2001. Thermal insulation products for buildings – factory made mineral wool (MW) products – specification, and satisfy the requirements of BS 5422 ‘Method for specifying thermal insulating materials for pipes, tanks, vessels ductwork and equipment....’

Fire Rockwool RW slabs are certified by Lloyd’s Register of Shipping as non-combustible materials for use on:

• Fixed offshore installations • MED classed ships – DTLR MCA Approval Rockwool RW slabs are rated non-combustible in accordance with ISO

1182 and IMO A. 799. Water resistance Rockwool RW slabs are highly water repellent.

Where it is necessary to maintain water repellency subsequent to heating at elevated temperatures, the use of WRG grade slabs is recommended. Acoustics Rockwool stone wool works in two distinct ways to reduce noise, either by impeding the transmission of sound through an element of the structure or by absorption of sound at the surface. Noise absorption is expressed as a factor between 0 and 1.0. The more sound that a surface absorbs, the higher its absorption coefficient.

EarthwoolCarbonZeroLoftRoll44: Earthwool CarbonZero Loft Roll 44 is a flexible, low density glass mineral wool quilt which is lightweight, flexible, resilient and non-combustible. The rolls are 1140mm wide and partially perforated to produce either 2 rolls 570mm wide or 3 rolls 380mm wide. Earthwool CarbonZero Loft Roll is primarily used for the thermal insulation of pitched roofs at ceiling level. However, it can also be used to thermally insulate floors and partitions, or wherever a lightweight mineral wool quilt is required. When used to insulate at ceiling level it is usually laid in two layers, with the first layer between the joists and the second layer at right angles to the joists.

Earthwool glass mineral wool rolls are extremely versatile and can be used in applications from loft insulation to HVAC and industrial insulation. Earthwool glass mineral wool is rot-proof, odourless, non-hygroscopic, does not sustain vermin and will not encourage the growth of fungi, mould or bacteria. It is chemically neutral and does not contain impurities.

Knauf Insulation’s Earthwool Loft Roll may not look like any insulation you’re used to, but that’s because its earthy brown

colour represents a level of sustainability unlike any other insulation. Its unmatched eco-friendly credentials are thanks

to the incorporation of revolutionary ECOSE® Technology, a new bio-based, formaldehyde-free binder technology

creating the next generation of insulation products. The result of five years of intensive research, it uses rapidly

renewable materials instead of petro-based chemicals and gives products like Earthwool Loft Roll their distinctive

natural brown colour. Once again, Knauf Insulation is way out in front when it comes to insulating... naturally.

Celotex TD4000 provides a quick and easy way to achieve effective thermally insulated roof decks for building structures such as small extensions or garage roofs where there will be only occasional trafficking. TD4000 allows the user to install the roof structure in one operation since the product provides the deck, insulation and vapour control layer thereby considerably reducing installation times ahead of weatherproofing.

Celotex XR4000 enables users to achieve lower U-values with a single layer of insulation than has previously been possible. This will help designers meet present and future legislation including the Building Regulations, BREEAM and the Code for Sustainable Homes. XR4000 is appropriate for use in floor, wall and roof applications.

How ‘two little ducks’ can help you reach the new Building Regulation emissions target.

Innovation in insulation

We know insulation inside and out

At Celotex we are leading the way through innovation and design in insulation with our new products.

Our super low lambda of 0.022 W/mK makes Celotex products more thermally efficient than other

typical PIR products and up to 100% more efficient than many mineral fibre products.

Offering better U-values and thinner solutions, Celotex products will help you easily hit the insulation

standards required by the new Building Regulations.

With the target to achieve a 25% reduction in CO2 emissions Celotex can offer new and innovative

solutions to help you meet these demands.
