    Introduction

    Since 1911 Meriam products have been used around the world in applications as diverse as chemical processing,

    Meri-Cal IIModel 3600 & 3610 Pressure Calibrator

    Model 3600 Meri-Cal IIis a microprocessorbased pressure calibrator with 5 digit resolutionand NIST traceability. Two pressure sensors andone electrical sensor installed in the Meri-Cal IIwill allow measurement of differential and staticpressure, plus current and voltage in one unit.Any two of these measurements are displayedon a 4 line by 20 character alphanumeric display,making calibration of transmitters andtransducers easy.

    The Model 3610 Meri-Cal IIincorporates aconvenient Data Logging mode and on-board

    memory to provide calibration documentation atthe stroke of a key. Calibration procedures canbe set up quickly using the Windows 95 DataLogging Program. Up to 20 PC Calibration filesof up to 20 points each can be downloaded froma PC. This allows the 3610 to prompt the userwith required calibration points. Another 20Manual Calibrations files can be stored directlythrough the keypad.

    MERI-CAL II MODEL 3610 DATA LOGGING andCOMMUNICATIONS SOFTWARE for PCs

    The Data Logging and Communications Software for the Meri-Cal II is Windows 95 compatible.Features for the program include:

    SET TIME button to synchronize the Meri-Cal II real time clock with the PCs. DATA ACQ provides automated data acquisition (10Hz rate) using the PC with the Meri-Cal II.

    The Meri-Cal II Model 3610 will function as a data logging calibrator for pressure and electrical signalin the PC Data Logging Mode.

    CREATE CAL FILE facilitates the uniform creation of individual calibration files for each transmitteror transducer ID number. After entering a Serial/Tag # of up to 15 characters, Channel 1 and 2Sensors are defined by clicking on the sensor type and desired units for each. The software allows upto 20 PC Calibration and 20 manual (20 points each) calibration files to be uploaded to the 3610.

    SEND PC CAL FILES downloads selected files to the Meri-Cal II. RECEIVE PC (and MANUAL) CAL FILES uploads stored calibration data from the Meri-Cal II to the PC. PRINT commands allow printing of calibration data previously uploaded to the PC.

    The Meri-Cal II guides the user through the calibration procedure.The PC interface option allows for the display of PREV: the mostrecent as left data, FOND: the present as found data, and NOML:The desired present point to calibrate as programmed throughthe PC interface. With a simple keystroke this information is

    stored in non-volatile memory. The Meri-Cal II is then interfacedwith the host PC for long-term information storage and printingof calibration certificates.

    3610 Features (Additional to 3600)

    Memory - Non-volatile data-logging memory for 40calibration files with up to 20 points per file.

    PC Data Logging Mode - prompts user to follow calibr-tion procedures downloaded from a PC (RequiresOptional Software). Stores AS FOUND and AS LEFTdata in memory.

    The Meri-Cal is a portable digital manometer /calibrator for pressure and differential pressuremeasurement. It features high accuracy andrugged design that brings laboratory test andcalibration capability to the field.

    Meri-Cals display simultaneously indicatespressure (or differential pressure) and electronictransducer/transmitter output in any of eightkey selectable engineering units. Meri-Calcontinues to provide the most cost effectiveand useful method of precise measurements.

    Digital Manometer

    Meriam Instrument's 350 Series SmartManometers are the first pressure measur-ing instruments with accuracy of 0.025%of F.S. at truly low prices. They are micro-processor-based pressure sensing devicesthat can measure gauge, differential,absolute or vacuum pressure. The displayscan read out in any of eleven engineeringunits and can also be scaled to special userunits for pressure. Differential models offera flow function to display square root flow

    rate in user defined units. An adjustabledamping feature minimizes the effects ofpulsating pressures. A Min/Max functioncaptures the extremes of pulsating or othervarying pressure signals and a Hold buttoncan freeze the display at any point of interest.

    Precision Absolute Manometer

    355 Precision Absolute Manometer

    Meriams model 355 Precision Absolute Manometerputs calibration bench accuracy in a portable,handheld unit. The pressure sensor is all 316ssallowing it to be used with liquids, gases andcorrosives compatible with 316ss. This combinationof accuracy and fluid compatibility makes the 355ideal for test or process applications.

    The model 355 has a programmable altitude func-tion that allows the user to enter the site altitudeabove sea level in feet or meters. This allows theuser to chose between displaying local barometric

    pressure or pressure corrected to sea level. Userset altitude or altitude based on U.S. StandardAtmosphere of 1962 can be displayed. The altitudefunction used with the Min/Max and Tare makesthe model 355 useful as a surveyors tool byaccurately measuring changes in altitude.

    Meriam Instruments 2100 Smart Gauges are micro-processor based pressure sensing devices that can

    be used to measure pressure, differential pressure(air or gas flow), or hydrostatic level. There arethree models in the series: the 2110P is principallyfor pressure measurements, the 2110L is for levelmeasure and the 2110F is for gas flow measurement.These three units share the same hardware, but havedifferent software programs based on the function.

    Manometer Replacement2100 Smart Gauges can replace Manometers whenrestrictions on indicating fluids are a problem. Twoapplications are significant. One application ishydrostatic level measurements using bubblers.

    The 2100 series is a good replacement because itmaintains local indication, adds outputs and uti-lizes most of the existing system of bubblers andother components. Gauge (GI) models may bedirectly connected to non-pressurized tanks fordirect head measurements. The other applicationis gas or air flow metering. Examples are heat

    treating, aeration, purge and cooling. The 2100 Smart Gauges maintain local indication, add outputs and keepreplacement costs down. With external corrections for pressure and temperature, the gauges can also measuremass flow.

    Pressure Switch In this application the 2100 has two distinct advantages over mechanical gauges. First, theactual switching point can be precisely set. A user can "see" the set point without having to make trial anderror adjustments. Second, it reduces excessive dead band or hysteresis a common complaint about mechanicalgauges. The dead band in the 2100 is user selectable for exact control.

    Absolute / Vacuum Measurement Absolute models give resolution to 0.1 mm Hg. Vacuum units have 0.001"Hg resolution over the entire vacuum range. The combination of resolution, 0.05% of full scale accuracy, out-puts and low price make the 2100 a good choice for customers in research and development laboratories andprocess measurement.

    The MINIGAUGE from Meriam Instrument provides digital pressure measurement

    3900/3910 Digital Pressure Gauge

    The MERIGAUGE digital pressure gauge from Meriam Instrument successfully addresses the modern demandsof process pressure measurement. Pressure ranges are available to 6,000 PSIG at standard accuracy of 0.25%of Full Scale and optional accuracy of 0.10% of full scale. A combination gauge that can be used for positivepressure measurements and vacuum measurements is also available. The standard gauge is powered by two 9volt alkaline or lithium batteries.     Differential Pressure Gauges

    The Meriam Bellows D/P line of instruments serves as acompliment to the Meriam Manometers by offering achoice when pressure rating, space, processcompatibility and many other specifications are afactor. The Meriam Bellows D/P units are used bymany instrument manufacturers as the basicdifferential pressure sensing devices for indicators,recorders, transmitters or controllers.

    Meriam Series 1120 D/P IndicatorsThe series 1120 gauges are designed to measure differential

    pressures, particularly for flow and liquid level. They arewidely used in industrial process plants, power plants, pollution

    control facilities and liquid cryogenic storage tank level. Models 1123, 1124 and1126 have 3", 4-1/2" and 6" dials respectively. A variety of scales for differential pressure, flow

    and level can be supplied. The unit is compact and has 270 pointer movement for greater resolution.

    Meriam Series 1220 Indicating SwitchesThe Series 1220 Differential Pressure Indicating Switches are used for on-off control or alarm. They alsoindicate flow, liquid level or other process variables.     Bar) or 12 to 20" Hg (300 to 500mm Hg) vacuum.Max. Pressure is 20 PSIG (1.3 Bar) when used withother pressure sources. A table stand is available for

    bench top usage. Connections are 1/4" FNPT.

    Hand PumpsThese are available in 2 models, Pressure or

    Vacuum. The pressure pump generates a positivepressure up to 145 PSIG, while the vacuum pumpgenerates a vacuum of 650mm Hg. Both units featurea needle bleed valve and a multi-turn vernier, whichprovides precise adjustment. Connections are1/8" FNPT.

    Line Traps

    Line Traps are an inexpensive means to keepmanometers and indicating fluids clean and arerecommended for all installations. When installed in theline ahead of the manometer they permit entrainedsolids to settle out before they reach the manometer.When used with gases or vapors they trap moisture.

    Sight Feed BubblersBubblers provide a visual indication of flow by

    showing air or gas bubbles discharging from a diptube immersed in a liquid in a transparent bowl. The

    bubble rate is controlled by a stainless steel needlevalve in the head casting.

    Bubblers and Line Traps available with heavy walltransparent bowls made of either plastic or glass.

    They are rated at 100 PSI and 50 PSI respectively.Either a ring type or strap type configuration is avail-

    able for securing the bowl to the head.

    Float Check ValveThis is a most valuable accessory small enough tobe installed on each tube of a multiple tube manometer,yet fully dependable. Normal operation of themanometer is not impaired by vertical installation ofthe float check valve. If pressure increases beyond theinstrument range the valve closes preventing the fluidfrom leaving the manometer. The valve opens whennormal pressure is restored. Maximum operatingpressure is 500 PSIG.

    Return WellsThese are stainless steel and for use on manometers

    with operating pressures up to 500 PSIG. The indicat-ing fluid is trapped during Manometer over pressure.Fluid will drain back into the Manometer when nor-mal pressure is returned.

    Seal PotsMeriam Seal Pots are used to provide a constant

    liquid head on each side of a flow meter involvingsteam or other condensable vapors. They also isolatethe instrument from the process with a sealing liquid.

    All Meriam Seal Pots are fabricated from grade Aseamless steel pipe. Each unit is cold hydraulic testedto over twice its rated working pressure. All connec-

    tions are 1/2" NPT furnished with solid steel plugs.The finish is red oxide primer.

    Manometer

    Meriam Manometers have many advantages in this age of technology

    because of their inherent accuracy and simplicity. Manometers are unique inbeing both pressure measurement instruments and standards for calibration ofother instruments. Once considered solely a laboratory instrument, themanometer is today commonly used in production applications to measurepressures ranging from as high as 100 inches of mercury to the lowest vacuumsof space.

    U-Tube ManometerThe U-tube manometer is the basic and most widely used style of manometer.

    The Meriam U-tube manometer is a versatile, economical instrument for themeasurement of pressures, vacuums or differential pressures.

    Pressure measurements are accomplished by balancing a vertical head ofindicating fluid with the pressure to be measured. There are no cams, gears,or levers to operate in the manometer. This allows the U-tube manometer to berecognized by NIST as a primary standard due to its inherent accuracy andsimplicity of operation.

    Meriam U-tube manometers are constructed of a ridged cast aluminum frame,aluminum indicating scale and hand bent glass U-tube. Mounting holes areprovided in the frame for mounting to a wall, column or other suitable structure.

    Well Type ManometerWell manometers are a direct reading device

    designed for process monitoring, general purposeproduction testing or laboratory measurement. Designedfor a maximum line pressure of 250 PSI (500 PSI optional) these instrumentsmay also be used for tank level, flow measurement and leak detection. Wellmanometers are constructed of aluminum channel, stainless steel endblocks and stainless steel manometer well. The 7/16" diameter glass tubingis yoke packed with viton gaskets at each end block and is supported atspaced intervals to prevent distortion.

    In most cases, the uncertainty of a manometer reading is + 1/2 of thesmallest scale graduation. This is due to the human eyes ability tointerpolate between graduations

    Inclined ManometerInclined manometers provide greater readability by stretching a

    vertical differential along an inclined indicating column, giving moregraduations per unit of vertical height. This effectively increases theinstruments sensitivity and accuracy. Scales are typically graduatedto the hundredth of an inch.

    The Model 40HEX Inclined manometer is individually calibratedand the angle of inclination is set relative to the instrument levelmounted above the channel. The unit is also capable of operatingwith 350-PSI line pressure. The construction of the 40HEX35 is similarto the well type manometer described above.

    producers operating on capillary flowprinciples. They are available in a wide

    range of types and sizes and are ideallysuited to many flow measurement and

    calibration applications.

    The Accutube averaging Pitot tube is a head type device, which generates a differential pressure signal similar to theorifice, venturi, flow nozzle, and other head producing primary elements. It can be used for flow measurement onlyor with static pressure and temperature transmitters as the primary measurement source for a flow control loop. Ithas been proven that the Accutubes flow measurement accuracy is better than that of the orifice. The Accutube alsogenerates considerable cost savings with its simple installation and wear-free, energy-efficient design, providing aviable alternative to traditional flow measurement devices.

    Meriams Accutube Flow Sensors

    The Accutube is an annular averaging Pitot device, which is simply inserted into a pipe or duct through a weldcoupling and packing. Based on pipe or duct size, the Accutube is constructed so that strategically located sensingports continually sample the impact and static pressures produced by the Accutubes obstruction of the flow streamprofile. Within the probe, the impact pressures sensed by the upstream ports are continually averaged in an isolatedplenum chamber. Similarly, the static pressures sensed by the downstream ports are averaged in a second isolatedplenum. A readout device is then used to indicate the differential between the two-plenum chambers.

    Meriam Accutubes are provided in a wide variety of models enabling you to select the probe diameter and mountingconfiguration compatible with your application needs. Meriam also has available special mounting hardware, valvesand materials for use in high temperature and pressure applications and corrosive environments.

    The Accutube reduces initial costs through low purchase price and reducedinstallation cost.The purchase price of an Accutube will almost always be less expensive than other head producing primary ele-ments. Meriams simple and effective Accutube design allows us to pass fabrication savings on to you. Whenmounting hardware is considered, the Accutube will always be low in cost. No flanges are required, just the simplemounting hardware included with the Accutube. Choose the integral 3-valve manifold Accutube head to reduceyour transmitter mounting and piping costs.

    The Accutubes installation costs are also low. On an 8-inch pipe, for example, installation of the Accutubes mount-ing thredolet requires only 4 linear inches of welding while orifice flanges for the same size pipe require 50 linearinches. Orifice flanges also require pipe cutting, weld preparation and weld cleanup. With the Accutube, simplyweld on the thredolet, bore a hole, install the Accutube and tighten the packing gland.     Accutubes save you money by causing less permanent pressure loss. Permanent pressure loss (unrecoverable headloss) is the system energy lost due to the primary elements obstruction of the flow stream. This pressure drop iswhat your pump or fan has to overcome and is directly related to system operating costs. The Meriam Accutube ismuch less of a flow obstruction than other primary elements. Test results on the Accutube show typical unrecover-able head loss of 2 10 % of the produced differential pressure. This means that there is much less permanent pres-sure loss, less work for the pump or fan to do and much lower operating costs. The difference in using Accutubesversus orifice plates can add up to hundreds of dollars per year in pump or fan horsepower per measurement point.

    Meriam Instruments Flow Measurement Systems are used in conjunction with differential pressureproducing primary flow elements (such as Laminar Flow Elements, Accutubes, Orifice Plates, Venturisetc) to quickly and automatically determine volumetric flow rate, mass flow rate and total flow. Meriamoffers several options to suit your application requirements. The systems are usually ordered with alltransducers necessary to measure the critical parameters of the application. Flow can be calculated usingour state of the art flow computers or in some cases by using the power of your own PC. Any head type(square root) primary element can be modeled as well as Laminar Flow Elements (LFEs). See thefollowing pages for more details.

    The LFS-1 Flow Measurement Systems for MeriamLaminar Flow Elements take advantage of the

    wide flow turndown and the percent of Readingprecision of the LFE, as well as the applicationand calibration expertise of Meriam, to provide asuperior gas flow measurement solution. LFEsare industry standards for the calibration of awide variety of flow devices such as variablearea meters, orifice plates, flow nozzles, thermalmass flow meters, turbine meters, regulators andvalves. The broad range of flow measurement

    they offer make LFE Measurement Systems excellent choices for measurements of engine intake air flow,electronics cooling, leak detection and quantification, production line quality control, component designand product certification applications. The integral flow computer makes real time corrections for changesin static pressure, temperature and relative humidity to provide the most accurate results

    possible. Calibration coefficients for up to five (5) LFEs can be stored in memory and called up foruse later with a push of a button.

    Special application requirements can often be accommodated by the LFS. For example, simultaneous flowmeasurement of two LFEs can be made and the summation of the two flows calculated anddisplayed. Or, for testing over a wide range for flow, the LFS can be set up to automatically switch fromone LFE to another as flow rates change. Standard digital outputs on the LFS change state as the flow ratemoves from the capability of one LFE to another. External solenoid valves can be used to switch the DPand P transducers to the active LFE. For control or data transmission purposes, the LFS FlowMeasurement System has both analog and digital outputs. 4 20 mA and 0 10 volts analog outputoptions are ideal for control and recording functions. RS-232 or RS-485 digital communications arestandard to facilitate communication with a PC and documentation of test results.

    The LFS Flow Measurement Systems (LFS) provide standard system accuracys of 1.0% of Reading overa 10:1 flow turndown and 1.1% over 20:1 turndown. Calibration of the LFE and LFS Flow MeasurementSystem together makes this possible. By using better calibration standards, Meriam can offer LFSaccuracy as low as 0.60% of Reading over a 10:1 flow turndown. All LFS packages include completesystem calibration and NIST traceable documentation. LFEs and systems cover gas flow ranges from0.5 SCCM to 15,000 SCFM.
