A dall tube is very much like a venturi tube, but has a higher ratio of pressure developed to the pressure lost and is more compact. The dall tube has a short, straight inlet section followed by an abrupt decrease in the inside diameter of the tube. This section, called the inlet shoulder, is followed by the converging inlet cone and a diverging exit cone. The two cones are separated by a slot or gap between the two cones. The low pressure is measured at the slotted throat (area between the two cones). The high pressure is measured at the upstream edge of the inlet shoulder.

There exist 'Reflection densitometers' that measure light reflected from a surface and 'Transmission densitometers' that measure transparent materials.

It typically consists of items which have a role as a primary element and a secondary element respectively.

The assembly will include housing, mounting bracket, energy supply, etc.

Dipoles are made as single element antennas, or as elements being part of more complex antenna structure. A single dipole element may be half a wavelength long, and split at the centre for connection with the transmission line. Maximum radiation is at right angles to the axis, and dipoles also have maximum performance with waves polarized in the same plane as the axis.

The most common disk controllers in use are IDE and SCSI controllers. Most home personal computers use IDE controllers. High end PCs, workstations and network file servers mostly have SCSI adaptors.

Displacer actuated units are less sensitive to surface wave action than other models which are actuated by floats. Spring opposed displacer type units are suited to difficult services where the fluid contains entrained solids or otherwise would tend to cause hang-ups in float actuated units.

The doppler flow meter operates by transmitting an ultrasonic sound from its transmitting transducer through the pipe wall into the flowing liquid. The sound will be reflected by the reflectors and recorded by the receiving transducer.

Letters are drawn out of a dot matrix where each dot is produced by a tiny metal rod, also called a "wire" or "pin", which is driven forward by the power of a tiny electromagnet or solenoid.

The analysis of TOC is done by leading the gas into a combustion chamber where the gas is burned off in an H2-flame. In this way the hydro carbon molecules are decomposed and the concentration of c-atoms is analysed by a detector.

Flanged thermowells are made from two pieces of metal, a single piece of bar stock for the stem, and the flange from a piece of drilled flat stock. The two pieces are then welded together and finished.

The liquid stream is divided into the fixed volume cavities between the gear teeth and meter body. The upstream liquid pressure continuously fills the cavities and forces the gears to rotate away from the inlet. The volumes of liquid are then squeezed out from between the teeth as they re-mesh on the outlet side of the flow meter. Each revolution of the flow meter will allow liquid, equal in total volume to the gear teeth spacing, to pass through the meter. The rotation of the gears is sensed through the rotation of one of the gear shafts.

The antenna is mounted on a gyro-stabilised platform to compensate for the vessel movements. The antenna and the platform is normally protected by a glass fibre radome.

Each pixel (picture element) consists of a column of liquid crystal molecules suspended between two transparent electrodes, and two polarizing filters, the axes of polarity of which are perpendicular to each other. Without the liquid crystals between them, light passing through one would be blocked by the other. The liquid crystal twists the polarization of light entering one filter to allow it to pass through the other.

Each dipole is 180 deg. out of phase with the preceding element. The length of the dipoles will vary gradually over the antenna, depending on the frequency band to be covered. In the HF band, wire structures may be used, while antennas for the UHF band may be made in the form of printed circuit boards protected by a glassfibre radome.

The reflector is often made so that the feedhorn will be mounted in front of the lower edge of the reflector.

In the absence of smoke, the light the light beam passes in front of a photodiode (sensor). When visible smoke enters the beam, some light is scattered by the smoke particles and is detected by the sensor, which then sets off the horn.

The float is tapered with the small end at the bottom and free to move vertically through the orifice.

The orifice handle is meant to facilitate the installation of the orifice plate between flanges. Generally, the orifice nominal size, flange rating, orifice bore diameter and 'Inlet' is stamped on the upstream side of the handle. For orifice handles which are an integral part, i.e. not manufactured as a separate part and fitted on to the orifice plate, see 'INTEGRAL PADDLE ORIFICE PLATE'.

By measuring the difference in fluid pressure between the normal pipe section and at the vena contracta (just after the orifice), we can find the velocity of the fluid flow by applying Bernoulli's equation.

The orifice plate can be removed without disassembling the adjacent piping. A common configuration for an orifice plate fitting is a welded connection on the upstream side and a flanged connection on the downstream side.

The reflector is made from electrically conduction glassfibre or aluminium. The feedhorn is the termination point of the coaxial cable or waveguide from the radio equipment. The antenna directivity is normally high, and is a function of the reflector diameter given as a number of wavelengths. Typically used for radio link and satellite applications for frequencies above 1 GHz.

A pH meter is a specific type of voltmeter with a very high impedance of the input channels. The high impedance is a necessary part of the equipment because of high resistance of the pH glass electrode typically used with pH meters (usually between 20 and 100 MΩ).

At a higher flow rate more area (between the float and the tube) is needed to accommodate the flow, so the float rises. The float hooks into spiral grooves on the glass (to stabilize the float) causing the float to rotate as it moves up or down. One edge of the float is compared with graduations on the glass to measure the flow rate of the fluid.

Two transmitters / receivers (transceivers) are located on each side of the pipe. The transmitters sends pulsating ultrasonic waves in a predefined frequency from one side to the other. The difference in frequency is proportional to the average fluid velocity.

Most transducers serve either sensors or actuators.

The signal is usually sent via wires, by some display or control device to a receiver located a distance away. Some "transmitters" use 4-20 mA current loop or digital methods for transmission of measurements. Some such transmitters even send process signals as 3-15 psi varying pneumatic pressure.

The housing is normally not in contact with the process medium.

Turbidity instruments measure the average volume of light scattering over a defined angular range. Both particle size and concentration of suspended solids as well as dissolved solids can affect the reading.

A ultrasonic level switch is equipped with a microprocessor that is generating pulses through a signal processor to a ultrasonic transducer. The ultrasonic transducer transmits an ultrasonic beam towards the surface level, and the returned echo is detected and the signal is processed in the microprocessor.

A ultrasonic level transmitter use an acoustic pulse emitted from a ultrasonic transducer towards the surface to be measured. This acoustic pulse is then reflected back towards the transducer and the time taken for the pulse to return is accurately measured by a microprocessor-controlled circuitry.

The pressure is measured up front of the cone and at the cone rear tap.

differential pressure flow meter

Venturies are found in many applications where the speed of the fluid is important, and form the basis of devices like a carburettor. They are also used to measure the speed of a fluid, see venturi tube flow meter.

A venturi tube is a pipe section that forms a relatively long passage, first narrowing smoothly down in diameter and then opening up back to original diameter at the exit.

A whip antenna is commonly used in the MF through UHF bands, is normally made from electrically conducting glass fibre whips, but may also be made of metal. Should ideally be of 1/4 (or 1/2) electrical wavelength. When this is not possible (e.g. in MF or low HF band and on most portable radios), this is compensated for by a serial inductor at the antenna footprint.

Most commonly used for unbalanced antennas, but is also used for balanced types (e.g. dipoles in the HF band).

Commonly used for e.g. TV and FM radio reception in the VHF and UHF bands. Directivity will depend on the number of elements. Bandwidth is quite narrow.
