Instructor: Carey Hernandez Colorful Canvases Saturdays: February 11, 18, 25; 10-11:30 am This class will teach pint-sized painters the basics of color mixing and introduce concepts of abstract painting. We’ll look to artists in the galleries for inspiration, then create canvas paintings full of color and pattern. Instructor: CaSandra Johnson Feathers & Fur Saturdays: March 4, 11, 18; 10-11:30 am An exhibition full of pictures of feathery fowl and furry beasts will get students excited to create critters of their own as we learn painting, drawing, and printmaking techniques in the studio. Instructor: Carey Hernandez Panda Pictures Saturdays: March 25, April 1, 8; 10-11:30 am Stillwater, the wise Panda next door, is one of illustrator Jon J Muth’s most beloved characters. We will look at original artworks featuring the Zen master Panda, then bring him to life in our own prints, drawings, and Asian ink wash paintings. Instructor: CaSandra Johnson Print it up! Saturdays: April 22, 29, May 6; 10-11:30 am Create piles of pictures! Students will look in the galleries to find pattern, line, and texture to incorporate into their relief and collagraph prints. They’ll also work collaboratively to create a screen print design for a class t-shirt and poster. Illustration: Character DesignSaturdays: January 21, 28, February 4, 11; 10 am-noonOne of the most important parts of storytelling is creating compelling characters. Some characters have super powers, some are silly, and others are villainous. This class will utilize an exhibition of illustrations by Jon J Muth to better understand what makes a character interesting. We’ll learn techniques to sketch, draw, ink, and color original characters of our own. Instructor: Fredd Gorham

Crazy for ClaySaturdays: January 21, 28, February 4, 11; 1-3 pmLearn to pinch, coil, and mold clay to bring ideas from your imagination to life. We’ll look at artworks in the galleries for inspiration before creating sculptures of our own back in the studio. Instructor: Dan Crane

Papier Mâché: Animal MountsSaturdays: February 18, 25, March 4, 11; 1-3 pmMany hunters use an art form called taxidermy to preserve the pelts of animals and create lifelike trophies of animals to hang on the wall or stand as sculpture. We’ll see paintings of animal mounts and use papier mâché to create trophies without harming a single critter. Instructor: Andy Smith

Drawing AnimalsSaturdays: March 18, 25, April 1, 8; 1-3 pmPaintings of grizzly bears, geese, and bison will encourage students to look more closely at the various shapes, textures, and patterns found in wildlife. In the studio we’ll draw from taxidermy mounts, and even live animals, while learning to use professional drawing tools and techniques to more accurately draw animals.Instructor: Therese Straseski

Photography: Winter TrailsSunday: February 26; 11 am-3:30 pmJoslyn Members: $36; General Public: $44This special photography workshop will begin at Joslyn for some initial instruction and for a chance to gain inspiration from an exhibition featuring romantic depictions of hunting and fishing. After time spent in the studio and galleries, we’ll caravan or carpool to Fontenelle Forest to hike the snowy trails, look for wildlife, and work with a “mountain man” model to create rugged images of our own. After some initial instruction in the studio utilizing taxidermy animals we’ll have a visit from some live critters from the conservation group Wildlife Encounters, then venture out of the Museum to draw animals big and small at Fontenelle Forest and Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium. An exhibition featuring portraits of mountain men and scenes of perilous hunts will demonstrate the romanticism and heroic status put upon the buckskin and fur of our model. Advanced Acrylics: Wild LifesThursdays: March 16, 23, 30, April 6, 13, 20; 6-8:30 pmJoslyn Members: $105; General Public: $126Still life paintings in the Wild Spaces, Open Seasons exhibition will provide the framework for this class that will teach advanced techniques to create realistic detail in a still life. Students will challenge themselves to paint a trompe l’oeil, or “fool the eye,” still life depicting steely hunting paraphernalia and taxidermy animals full of sumptuous texture.Instructor: Troy Muller
