INSTRUCTOR BIOGRAPHIES--FINAL CRAIG ABERBACH retired from the Cape Coral (FL) Fire Department as a division chief after 22 years of service. He is the director of emergency services at Edison State College in southwest Florida, where he oversees all fire and EMS degrees and certifications. He is an adjunct professor at Edison State College and an instructor with Starfire Training Systems. ALEC ADAMS has worked for Cherokee (GA) Fire for seven years and is a sargeant/paramedic. He is a fire instructor 1 and has presented at area fire departments and the Metro Atlanta Fire Fighters Conference. He is also a Georgia Smoke Diver and F.L.A.M.E.S. graduate. RICHARD ALFES is a 27-year veteran of the fire service and a shift commander with the Naugatuck (CT) Fire Department. CERIELLO is a 22-year veteran of the Fire Department of New York, where he is assigned to Squad Co. 252 in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn. He is an instructor at FDNY's Rescue School and a member of NY-TF1. RON CHEVES began his fire service career nearly 40 years ago when he joined the Pinecroft-Sedgefield (NC) Fire Department. He then joined the Rural-Metro (TN) Fire Department. He then became a member of Idlewild (NC) Volunteer Fire Department, where he has been for 30 years. He acquired numerous certifications, including the UNC-C Fire & Rescue Management Institute and the NC Fire Chief’s Executive Development Program. He leads the Red Ribbon courses for the VCOS section of the International Association of Fire Chiefs. STEVE CHIKEROTIS is a 33-year member of the Chicago (IL) Fire Department, where he is a deputy district chief. He has been a chief officer for the past 15 years, in which time he has held the positions of battalion chief, director of training, and chief of fire academy operations. A fire service instructor for 25 years, he is a staff instructor at the Chicago Fire Academy and for the Illinois Fire Service Institute, RICO Fire Training, and the Harold Washington College. He works with the television and motion picture industry as a technical advisor, safety officer, and screenwriter. He has worked on more than 50 major motion pictures including Backdraft. MICHAEL CHRISTENSEN is a 24-year veteran of the Hackensack (NJ) Fire Department, where he is a lieutenant assigned to Ladder Co. 1. He is a New Jersey State-certified level 2 fire instructor and has been an instructor at the Bergen County Law and Public Safety Institute since 2007. JOHN L. CIAMPO is a fourth-generation firefighter and a 28-year veteran of the fire service. He previously served as a deputy chief of the Wyckoff (NJ) Fire Department, where he is an instructor for the tower ladder, rescue, and engine courses. He is an instructor with the FDIC Search H.O.T. program. MICHAEL N. CIAMPO is a 27-year veteran of and a lieutenant in the Fire Department of New York. He is a recipient of FDIC’s Tom Brennan Lifetime Achievement Award and is a technical editor of Fire Engineering. He is on the educational advisory board of FDIC and writes the monthly column “Web Watch” in Fire Engineering. LAWRENCE COLLINS is a battalion chief and supervises eight fire stations in the south Los Angeles area. He has been part of the Los Angeles (CA) County Fire Department for 31 years. He is also a leader of the Los Angeles County Fire Department’s Urban Search and Rescue Team, which was deployed to help Japanese firefighters and rescuers searching for survivors of the earthquake in the hard-hit cities of Ofunoto and Kamaishi. Less than 24 hours before, this team had returned from conducting two weeks of search and rescue in the New Zealand earthquake. Last year, the team spent three weeks digging for survivors in collapsed buildings in the Haiti earthquake. DENNIS COMPTON was chief in Mesa, Arizona, for five years and assistant chief in Phoenix, Arizona, where he served for 27 years. He has served as chairman of the International Fire Service Training Association executive board and of the Congressional Fire Services Institute National Advisory Committee. He is chairman of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Board of Directors. DAVID COMSTOCK JR. is a 30-year veteran of the fire service and chief of the Western Reserve Joint Fire District in Poland, Ohio. He is a Chief Fire Officer designee and lectures extensively on fire service topics related to company officer operations, liability, and personnel issues. His articles have appeared in many fire service magazines including Fire Engineering. He is an attorney in the firm of Comstock, Springer & Wilson Co., L.P.A. in Youngstown, Ohio. CONLEY is a 20-year veteran of the St. Louis (MO) Fire Department. Since 1997, he has instructed and graduated more than 200 recruits through the St. Louis Fire Academy and St. Louis Community College systems and is a lead Missouri state evaluator. He is president of Leadership Development Concepts, LLC, and the creator of GLUE (Growing Leaders Using Empowerment) premier workshops. Conley is camp director for Missouri Childrens Burn Camp and a board member and president of the supervisory committee at St. Louis Firefighters Credit Union. MICHAEL CONTRERAS is a paramedic fire captain and former wellness and fitness coordinator for the Orange County Fire Authority in Irvine, California. He is a National Strength and Conditioning Association certified strength and conditioning specialist CSCS, an ACE certified peer fitness trainer, a USAW performance coach, a Crossfit certified olympic lifting coach, a Russian kettlebell certified instructor, a functional movement screen instructor, a Concept II certified instructor, and a Crossfit instructor.

JAY COON, a 25-year veteran of the fire service, recently retired as a captain with the Sacramento (CA) Fire Department, where he was assigned to Rescue 20. He has been an FDIC H.O.T. instructor for 12 years. BUSTER COOPER, a 24-year veteran of the fire service, is the captain on Engine Company 2 of the Conway (AR) Fire Department. He is the owner of 2 Alarm Fireground Training Inc. He is an adjunct instructor for the Arkansas Fire Academy and lead instructor for its forcible entry and ventilation hands-on programs. GLENN P. CORBETT, PE, has been in the fire service since 1978 and is a former assistant chief of the Waldwick (NJ) Fire Department, an associate professor of fire science at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City, and a technical editor for Fire Engineering. He previously held the position of administrator of engineering services with the San Antonio (TX) Fire Department. He has a master of engineering degree in fire protection engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts. He authored two chapters on fire prevention/protection in The Fire Chief`s Handbook, Fifth Edition (Fire Engineering, 1995) and is the coauthor of the late Francis L. BRIAN CRANDELL is an assistant chief with the Central Valley (MT) Fire District and has more than 30 years of career and volunteer fire service experience. His operational and teaching interests include command, firefighter safety, training, and mutual aid. JAMES K. CRAWFORD, a 37-year veteran of the career and volunteer fire service, is the assistant chief for Midway Fire Rescue in Pawleys Island, South Carolina. He retired as the assistant chief of operations with the Pittsburgh (PA) Bureau of Fire after 20 years of service. He is also the retired deputy chief of operations for the 171st Air Refueling Wing Fire Department, Pennsylvania Air National Guard, after serving in the military for 23 years; he is a graduate of the Air Force Fire Academy. Previously, he was deputy chief of training and a rescue manager for the Pennsylvania USAR Strike Team and chief of the Ben Avon (PA) Volunteer Fire Company. He was the recipient of the International Society of Fire Service Instructors 2002 Instructor of the Year award. STEVE CROTHERS, a 17-year veteran of the fire service, has served 13 of those years in the Seattle (WA) Fire Department, where he is a lieutenant, a training officer, and the driver instructor officer. He was instrumental in developing and building the tiller program for the department. He is a Washington State emergency vehicle incident prevention instructor and tractor-drawn aerial instructor. He has conducted tiller training with fire departments in the United States and Canada. GEORGE CRUZ is a captain with the Los Angeles County (CA) Fire Department. He has been in the fire service for 25 years; he has held the positions of firefighter, paramedic, and engineer. As a captain, he served as the Fitness for Life coordinator and medical liaison officer. He is an instructor for the IAFF/IAFC/ACE Peer Fitness Trainer Certification program and is a member of the IAFF/IAFC/ACE technical committee. He has certifications as an urban search and rescue specialist and hazardous materials technician. HARVEY CRYDER is chief of the Screven County (GA) Fire Department. He also coordinates and conducts training in fireground management, special operations, and live fire workshops. He is a lead instructor with the Georgia Smoke Diver Program, where he assists with advanced fireground operations and firefighter survival training. DOUG CURRY has been a member of the fire service for 15 years, serving with volunteer, municipal, and industrial departments. He served the past eight years with the Terre Haute (IN) Fire Department, where he is a lieutenant assigned to Ladder Company 5. He is an adjunct instructor for the State of Indiana District Training and was instrumental in the development and instruction of District 7’s Live Fire Program. He has degrees in business administration and public safety management. MICHAEL P. DALLESSANDRO is a life member of the Grand Island (NY) Volunteer Fire Company and operator of Michael P. Dallessandro and Associates, a consulting firm serving the needs of volunteer and combination fire departments. DAVID DALRYMPLE is a career EMS provider for the RWJUH Emergency Medical Services in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and the former volunteer rescue services captain for Clinton (NJ) EMS/Rescue. He is the education chair of the Transportation Emergency Rescue Committee-US (TERC). He is certified as an international level extrication assessor and serves on the Expert Technical Advisory Board of the IETRI as the road traffic accident advisor. He is the executive educator for Roadway Rescue LLC, a transportation rescue training company. He writes “Extrication Tactics” columns for Fire Engineering, is a contributing author for Fire Engineering’s Handbook for Firefighter I and II, and authored a DVD educational series on vehicle extrication (Fire Engineering). JAMES M. DALTON, firefighter/EMT, is the coordinator of research and development and a fire service instructor for the Chicago (IL) Fire Department. CHRISTOPHER DALY is a 20-year veteran of the fire service and a full-time police officer who specializes in the reconstruction of serious vehicle crashes. DANSBACH is the fire marshal in the Rutherford (NJ) Bureau of Fire Safety. He has worked in code enforcement for 32 years, the past 25 as fire marshal. He has been a member of the Rutherford Fire Department for 33 years; he is a past chief and served 10 years as a chief officer. He teaches C.E.U. classes for fire inspectors and fire subcode and building subcode officials for Kean and Rutgers University. CHANDRA DAVIS is a firefighter/public fire educator for the Hornbeak (TN) Volunteer Fire Department and has been an active member of the fire department for 13 years. She is a member of the NFPA Technical Advisory committee 150 Animal Housing Units and NFPA section member for the Fire Service and Education. She is certified in advanced large animal rescue. She is a former zoological keeper, working with elephants and exotics in the United States, Austria, and Sri Lanka. MIKE DAVIS, a 39-plus-year veteran of the fire service, is a former member of the Fire Department of New York, where he served more than 26 years, the last 10 years in Rescue Co. 3. He is the municipal training officer for the Beacon (NY) Fire Department. He has a B.S. degree in criminal justice from Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York, and an associate degree in occupational studies (fire science) from Corning (NY) Community College. He has served as logistics manager for the NY-TF1 USAR team; a Department of Homeland Security (DHS)/Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Logistics Working Group member; an EMT instructor; a New York State fire instructor; and as a lead instructor at the FDNY Technical Rescue School. DAVID DECKER is the battalion chief of training for the Indianapolis (IN) Fire Department. He is a 30-year veteran of the fire service, serving ten of those years as a U.S. Air Force firefighter. He is a certified instructor II, II/III with the State of Indiana. He was featured in Fire Engineering’s “Training Minutes” on vent-enter-search. SEAN P. DECRANE is a battalion chief for the Cleveland (OH) Division of Fire, where he has served for 20 years. Previously, he was a captain in the heavy duty rescue company. He was heavily involved in the response to the High Park Fire in Colorado in the summer of 2012. This fire burned more than 87,000 acres and destroyed 259 homes. MICHAEL DETTMAN is a 15-year veteran of the Sterling (IL) Fire Department. He has fire officer I and II certification, fire investigator, and juvenile fire setter intervention specialist and received the Firefighter of the Year award in 2005. He teaches for the University of Illinois Fire Service Institute and has assisted in teaching the basic pump operations class at the Annual Fire College in Champaign, Illinoi. TOM DIXON, a 33-year veteran of the fire service, is an assistant chief with the Patterson (NY) Fire Department. He has been an FDIC instructor for 10 years. DAVID DODSON is lead instructor for Response Solutions. He has been a member of the fire service for 25 years and has served as a battalion chief, duty safety officer, and emergency manager for several Colorado fire departments. JIM DOTSON is a lieutenant with the Urbana (IL) Fire Department and a retiree of the United States Air Force. DAN DOYLE is a firefighter for the Pittsburgh (PA) Bureau of Fire, working in Engine and Truck 8 in the East Liberty section of the city. Previously, he was a firefighter with the Fairfax County (VA) Fire & Rescue Department. He also served as a volunteer in the Monroeville (PA) Fire Department. He is a member of the Tradition Training Group. ERIC DREIMAN is a lieutenant on Ladder 19 with the Indianapolis (IN) Fire Department. He has 21 years of experience in the fire service. He is certified fire instructor, paramedic, and hazardous materials technician. ROMMIE DUCKWORTH, a fire lieutenant/paramedic and EMS coordinator, has worked for more than 20 years in career and volunteer fire departments, public and private emergency services, and hospital-based healthcare systems. He is a frequent speaker at national conferences and a regular contributor to research programs, magazines, textbooks and new media on topics of field operations, leadership, education, and career development in the emergency services. He founded the New England Center for Rescue and Emergency Medicine. JIM DUFFY has been a firefighter for more than 30 years and a career firefighter for 20 years and has served as shift commander in the Wallingford (CT) Fire Department for the past 10 years. He was formerly a captain with the Mineola (NY) Fire Department. He is a nationally certified fire instructor. He is an adjunct instructor for Middlesex County Regional Fire School. He is a coauthor of the Tactical Perspective DVD series and was the lead in the Search DVD (Fire Engineering). He was the division chief in charge of the Yale School of Medicine Survivability study on the Last Chance SCBA Back-Up Filter. He co-hosts “Fireground Strategies and other Stuff from the Street,” with Anthony Avillo on Fire Engineering Talk Radio. MICHAEL M. DUGAN, a 36-year veteran of the fire service, is also a 27-year member of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), where he served as captain of Ladder Company 123 in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. As a lieutenant, he served in Ladder Company 42 in the South Bronx. While assigned as a firefighter in Ladder Company 43, in Spanish Harlem, he received the James Gordon Bennett Medal in 1992 and the Harry M. Archer Medal in 1993, FDNY’s highest award for bravery. He was a volunteer firefighter in Halesite, New York. He lectures on truck company operations, building construction, size-up, and today’s fire service.

TODD DUNCAN has been a career firefighter with the Lancaster (SC) Fire Department for eight years and is an engineer. He is certified in hazardous materials, rope rescue, confined space rescue, and swiftwater rescue. He is an instructor at South Carolina Fire Academy. Before joining the fire service, he received a BS in chemistry from Gardner-Webb University. He was a research scientist at the Clemson Technical Center, an engineer for the wastewater treatment section of Chem-Nuclear Systems of Columbia, and a project manager for multiple dredging and dewatering companies working with hazardous and nonhazardous materials. THOMAS DUNNE is a deputy chief and a 30-year veteran of the Fire Department of New York and has extensive experience working in Mid-Manhattan and the Bronx. He has been the incident commander at hundreds of fires in residential, commercial, and high-rise buildings. He has written numerous articles for Fire Engineering and has presented at conferences across the country. He also serves as an adjunct instructor for the National Fire Academy. A Fordham University graduate, he writes and lectures on a variety of fire service topics. JAMES ELLIS has more than 21 years in the fire service and is a lieutenant with the Pittsburgh (PA) Bureau of Fire, where he is assigned to Engine Company 8 in the East Liberty section of the city. He is a suppression instructor for the Pennsylvania State Fire Academy. He is also a rescue specialist with the PA USAR Strike Team 1. He is the fire chief of the 171st Air Refueling Wing Fire Department for the Pennsylvania Air National Guard in Pittsburgh. He instructs nationally on firefighter rescue. BRYAN EMENECKER has 27 years in the fire service, where he started as a volunteer in 1985. He has served the past 18 years in the Camden (NJ) Fire Department, where he is a captain of Squad Co. 7. He is a level 2 fire service instructor for the New Jersey and a Pro Board-certified fire instructor. He is an instructor for Safety & Survival Training LLC. JASON EMERY, a 21-year veteran of the fire service, is a lieutenant with the Waterbury (CT) Fire Department, where he is assigned to the rescue/hazmat company. He has a BS in fire science from the University of New Haven and is subject matter expert for the National Fire Protection Association, a member of its development team, and the lead instructor for its Hybrid and Electric Vehicle Training program. RICK ENNIS is a third-generation chief and instructor with more than 32 years of experience in the fire service; he has served the past 17 years as chief. CHARLIE FADALE is a 24-year career firefighter; and chief of education and training for the Fishers (IN) Fire Department. EDMUND FARLEY, who has more than 19 years in the fire service, is a captain with the Pittsburgh (PA) Bureau of Fire, where he is assigned to Truck Co. 17 in the Homewood section of the city. He is a suppression instructor for the Pennsylvania State Fire Academy and a rescue squad leader with the Pennsylvania USAR Strike Team 1. He has several national fire service certifications and instructs nationally on firefighter rescue. FREDDIE FERNANDEZ is 30-year veteran of the Miami (FL) Department of Fire Rescue. He was a recruit instructor from 1990 to 1991. He began his teaching career in 1986, conducting EMS training at all levels. He has AS degrees from Miami Dade College in EMS and fire science. Since 1999, he has specialized in test preparation courses for entry and promotional level candidates in the fire and police sectors of public safety. During this time he has facilitated, prepared, assessed or participated in hundreds of examination processes. ROBERT FERRARA has been the director of fire safety for Montclair State University in New Jersey for the past 10 years. He has served 28 years as a firefighter in the Lyndhurst (NJ) Fire Department, where he has served as chief of the department for four years. He is a licensed fire official and fire subcode official. AARON FIELDS is a 12-year veteran of the fire service and on Engine Company 28 of the Seattle (WA) Fire Department. He developed the “Nozzle Forward” techniques for improving engine company performance. GREG FISHER, a 38-year veteran of the fire service, retired as assistant fire education specialist from the University of Illinois Fire Service Institute in 1980; he coordinated fundamental fire training for the State of Illinois. He is now assistant chief for the Pesotum (IL) Fire Department and senior security leader for Eli Lilly in Clinton, Indiana. Previously, he had retired as a captain from the Champaign Fire Department after serving 26 years. He has a bachelor’s degree in fire science management from Southern Illinois University. JOE FLOOD is the author of the The Fires, a nonfiction account of New York City’s 1970s fiscal crisis and fire epidemic and Amazon.com Book of the Month. He covers the Fire Department of New York for New York magazine and has written for Urban Firefighter magazine. STEPHEN FLORIAN is a 19-year veteran of the fire service. For the past 11 years, he has been in the Detroit (MI) Fire Department in Ladder 19. Previously, he worked in Highland Park, Michigan, and Gary, Indiana. He has held numerous positions including chief of the volunteer department. He has been an instructor since 1976. He has been involved with apparatus specifications and the research and development of hose, nozzles, and foam systems. He taught ARFF and was a member of the urban search and rescue unit at Little

Rock (AR) Fire Department. He founded the Northeast Saline County Fire District in 1988 and served on the 911 board in 1989. DAVID FRANKLIN is a 23-year veteran of the San Francisco (CA) Fire Department. He leads and commands Division 3 as an operations chief. He previously served as the chief of special operations and as a captain of safety and training; during that time he developed the department's rapid intervention company program. CHUCK FRENCH is a 14-year veteran with the Tulsa (OK) Fire Department, where he is administrative chief. He has a master's degree in fire and emergency management from Oklahoma State University. He has been an instructor of technical rescue and advanced fire behavior since 2006. GREGORY FULLER is 21 year veteran of the fire service with more than 13 years of ARFF experience. He is the assistant chief/training officer for the Metropolitan Airports Commission with the Minneapolis-St. Paul International (MSP) Airport Fire Department. He has an associate degree in fire protection and a bachelor degree in public administration. MIKE GAGLIANO has 25 years of fire/crash/rescue experience with the Seattle (WA) Fire Department and the United States Air Force. He is the captain of Ladder 5 and a member of the Seattle Fire Department’s Critical Decision/Tactical Training group. He has written numerous fire service articles and is co-author of Air Management for the Fire Service and the self-contained breathing apparatus chapter of the Fire Engineering’s Handbook for Firefighter 1 and II (2009). He is a member of the Fire Engineering editorial advisory board and the FDIC advisory board; a director for the Cyanide Poisoning Treatment Coalition; and a national instructor on air management, fireground tactics, leadership, and company officer development. He partners with his wife Anne to teach on strategies for developing and maintaining a strong marriage/family. KEVIN A. GALLAGHER is the chief of the Acushnet (MA) Fire & EMS Department. He has more than 25 years of experience as a firefighter and a chief officer. He is an instructor in the fire science program at Bristol Community College and has an associate degree in fire science and a bachelor’s degree in political science. In 2010, he was appointed by the governor of Massachusetts to the Board of Building Regulations and Standards, the state’s building code oversight board. KRISS GARCIA is the chief of the American Fork (UT) Fire Department. He retired from the Salt Lake City (UT) Fire Department after 27 years. He has more than 30 years of experience. He has had articles published in fire service periodicals and is the author of a book on fire tactics. RICHARD B. GASAWAY, PhD, retired as a chief after serving 30 years in the fire service. He now serves as the executive director for the Center for the Advancement of Situational Awareness and Decision Making. WILLIAM M. GODFREY retired as chief of the Deltona (FL) Fire Department after 25 years in the fire service. He is chief consultant for FutureFD/LE, a fire department and homeland

security consulting firm. He has an MBA with additional degrees in public administration and EMS management. He is a paramedic and fire instructor III; a former planning manager for USAR FL-TF4; an author; a software developer; an inventor; and an expert in simulation training, fire training, fire dynamics, communication, and incident command. BILLY GOLDFEDER, EFO, is deputy chief of the Loveland-Symmes (OH) Fire Department. He has been a firefighter since 1973, a company officer since 1979, and a chief officer since 1982. He serves on the International Association of Fire Chiefs board of directors, the September 11th Families Association, and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. He has taught at FDIC for 30-plus years and is a member of the Fire Engineering editorial advisory board and the FDIC executive advisory board. BRENDAN J. GRACE has nine years of experience as a nozzleman. He has been teaching the Nozzle Forward class since 2009. DARRELL GRAF has been in fire service since 1969. He has developed/invented firefighting equipment, has conducted more than 50 major mutual-aid drills (live fire--primarily grain elevators), and has extensive experience in small and rural fire departments. He is also a marine fire officer, formerly with Resolve Marine Group and T&T Bisso Marine. He served as volunteer rescue instructor for 20 years for the State of North Dakota Emergency Health Services Department. STUART GRANT, a 33-year veteran of the fire service, is a battalion chief with Dallas (TX) Fire Rescue and a task force leader for TX-TF2. He is a master firefighter and fire instructor with the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. He has been an instructor at Collin County Community College, McKinney, Texas; and at the Texas A&M University Municipal Fire School. He has two associate degrees and a bachelor’s degree in fire administration. He received the Chief Fire Officer designation and is a member of The Institution of Fire Engineers. SHAWN GRASS is a 26-year member of the fire service and a battalion chief with the Indianapolis (IN) Fire Department. He has been an FDIC Flashover and Truck Company instructor for 13 years. He has an associate degree in applied fire science, teaches as an adjunct instructor for Ivy Tech Community, and is a member of the advisory board. He is the fire training team leader for To Hell and Back 1, 2, and 3, an educational program on firefighter burn prevention. He served as president of the Indy Metro F.O.O.L.S. from 2002 to 2009. SEAN GRAY is a 20-year veteran of and engineer with Cobb County (GA) Fire and Emergency Services. He has an associate degree and is certified as a paramedic, haz-mat technician, and technical rescue technician. WILLIAM GREENWOOD has 18 years of experience in volunteer, paid-call, and career fire departments throughout New Hampshire. He is the training chief for the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport Fire Department and a lieutenant with the Keene (NH) Fire Department. He is a senior staff instructor with the New Hampshire Fire Academy. He is a pro-board certified National Fire Protection Association 1041 fire instructor III, 1021 fire officer II, firefighter III, and firefighter safety/survival instructor. He has been published in Fire Engineering.

MARK GREGORY is a 26-year veteran of the fire service and a lieutenant in the Fire Department of New York, where he has been assigned to Tower Ladder 111 for the past nine years. Previously, he was a firefighter on Rescue 2 and Ladder 132. He instructs at the FDNY Academy as an Annual Education Day and is an extrication instructor at the Suffolk County Fire Academy and nationally as a member of P.L. Vulcan Fire Training. He has risen through the ranks in East Quogue, where he served three years as chief and is now a fire commissioner. He writes regularly for fire service magazines and Web sites; he is a cohost on Fire Engineering Radio. DAVID GRIFFIN joined the fire service in 2005 and is in the Charleston (SC) Fire Department Training Division. He has a bachelor of science, a master of science, and a doctorate. He competed as an amateur bodybuilder from 2004-2007 and a professional mixed martial arts fighter from 2008-2010. He currently competes in Ironman Triathlons and completed the Brotherhood Ride from Florida to New York City in August-September 2011. HENRY GRUBA is a 28-year veteran of the fire service and a lieutenant/paramedic with the Waukegan (IL) Fire Department. He is a field instructor with the University of Illinois Fire Service Institute and also instructs in the fire science program at McHenry County College in Crystal Lake, Illinois. He has a bachelor’s degree in fire science management from Southern Illinois University. DAVID GUDINAS recently joined the Federal Emergency Management Agency as a section chief working to support the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) program. He spent the majority of his career supporting the fire and emergency services, including serving more than five years as a manufacturer’s representative for fire apparatus and more than eight years as the exhibits manager and director of professional development with the International Association of Fire Chiefs. He has more than 23 years of fire service experience as a volunteer fire officer and a fire and EMS instructor. BILL GUSTIN is a 39-year veteran of the fire service and a captain with the Miami-Dade (FL) Fire Rescue Department. He began his fire service career in the Chicago area and conducts firefighting training programs in the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean. He is a lead instructor in his department's officer training program, is a marine firefighting instructor, and has conducted forcible entry training for local and federal law enforcement agencies. He is an editorial advisory board member of Fire Engineering and an advisory board member for FDIC. He was a keynote speaker for FDIC 2011. CARL HADDON has served more than 25 years in the career fire and EMS services and is a deputy chief for the North Fork (ID) Fire Department. Since the early 1980s, he has served as fire/safety director for numerous racing organizations, including Penske Motorsports, NASCAR, USAC, and Mickey Thompson Racing. He is a Level 2 fire instructor and a member of the International Society of Fire Service Instructors and FOOLS. ED HADFIELD has more than 26 years of fire service experience and is a division chief. He was named the 2004 California Training Officer of the Year. He is a regular host of "The Command Show" and "Crossfit 4 Fire," part of Fire Engineering Blog Talk Radio. He has developed Webcast and podcast on-line training programs and state and regional Truck Company Academies. He has a bachelor of science and an associate of science degree and is pursuing his graduate degree in leadership studies. . CRAIG A. HAIGH is a 29-year veteran of the fire service, chief of the Hanover Park (IL) Fire Department, and a field staff instructor with the University of Illinois Fire Service Institute. He has managed volunteer, combination, and career departments; implemented intermediate and paramedic services; and developed a variety of courses for the fire service. Previously, he served as a firefighter on Ladder 3 and Rescue 1, a lieutenant on Ladder 174, and a captain of Division 14 and Special Operations Command. He was operations section chief at the Governor’s Island burn testing of alternate strategies for combating wind-driven fires. He is a fire service instructor I, an instructor of the Battalion Chief Command course, and the deputy chief development course for the FDNY bureau of training. WILLIAM HELLARD is an 11-year veteran of the Rogers (AR) Fire Department. He is a hazardous materials coordinator for the Special Operations Team and a hazardous materials instructor for the State of Arkansas. AARON HELLER is a 27-year veteran of the fire service and a captain in charge of training for the Hamilton Twp. (NJ) Fire District #9. He is a past chief of the New Egypt (NJ) Fire Department. JIM HESTER, a 25-year veteran of the fire service and a lieutenant, has served with Tinker (OK) Fire & Emergency Services since 1995. He is a fire academy manager and rescue program coordinator for Eastern Oklahoma County Technology Center, a USAR rescue team manager for OK-TF1, and a 2013 FDIC H.O.T. instructor for Engine Company Essentials. ROBERT HIANIK is a captain and a 29-year veteran of the fire service. He is a member of the Itasca (IL) Fire Protection District, where he is the training, safety, and operations officer. SAMUEL HITTLE is a lieutenant on Truck 1 with Wichita (KS) Fire. He has an associate degree in fire science and has been published in fire service publications. LARRY HJALMARSON leads the Williams’ natural gas pipeline efforts in pipeline integrity and safety; environmental, health and safety; and operations performance. He has 35 years of experience in the natural gas industry and began his career with Williams in 1982. Hjalmarson also served as operations director of Williams Venezuela facilities. He serves as chairman of the Southern Gas Association Transmission Operations and Maintenance Committee and serves on the INGAA Operations Safety & Environmental Committee and the INGAA Task Force on Integrity Management Continuous Improvement. Hjalmarson has a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Arizona. JAMES HODGES is a 15-year veteran of the fire service. He has been a member of the Fire Department of New York for the past 12 years, where he is assigned to Rescue Co. 1; previously, he worked in Squad Co. 41. He is also a New York State fire instructor. He is a former member of the Westwood Volunteer Fire Department. JASON HOEVELMANN is a 20-year veteran of the fire service and has been instructing for more than 16 years. He is on the board of directors for the International Society of Fire Service Instructors. He is a member of the Fire Engineering and FDIC editorial advisory boards. TIM HOLMAN, a 36-year veteran of the fire and EMS services, is chief of German Township (OH) Fire & EMS. He has an extensive background in health care management, the fire service, and organizational development. RUDY HORIST is a 28-year veteran of the fire service and deputy chief of operations for the McHenry Township (IL) Fire Department. He previously taught at FDIC and instructs throughout Illinois and at various regional events. DARIN HOUSE is a lieutenant and has served 17 years as a career firefighter and five years as a volunteer firefighter. He trains recruit classes for his department, Sedgwick County (KS) District #1. JIM HUMMELL, a 38-year veteran of the fire service, is a battalion chief and shift commander with the Clay (IN) Fire Territory. He has been an FDIC H.O.T. instructor for nine years. TIM HYDEN is the training and safety officer for East Manatee (FL) Fire Rescue; he has served 20 years in the Florida fire service. He has an associate degree in fire science and an advanced technical certificate in fire science administration and is pursuing a bachelor's degree in public safety administration. He is a graduate of the Florida Fire Chiefs’ Association Emergency Services Leadership Institute and has several state certifications through the Florida Bureau of Fire Standards and Training. ANTHONY IPPOLITO is dangerous goods officer for the Canadian National Railway in Chicago, Illinois. He was an instructor of hazardous materials for the Association of American Railroads at the Security and Emergency Response Training Center in Pueblo, Colorado. CURT ISAKSON is a 23-year veteran of Escambia County (FL) Fire Rescue, where he is a battalion chief and chief of special operations. During his career, he has been assigned to fire inspections, the training division, and special operations. He is a Florida-certified instructor and fire officer. He is the owner of Suburban Fire Training, LLC, and has annual contracts with five departments to provide monthly training and coordinate multiagency training in northwest Florida. JOSEPH JAY is a 26-year veteran of the fire service. As an instructor for the Illinois Fire Service Institute for 18 years, he has taught in Fire Academy Recruit School and on live fire training, flammable liquids, company officer training, engine company operations, rapid intervention, fire apparatus engineer, and hazmats. He is a member of the Bolingbrook (IL) Fire Department and has an associate degree in applied science in fire science technology. JERRY JENSEN began his fire service career in 1992 and is a lieutenant with the Sarasota County (FL) Fire Department. He is a Florida-certified firefighter, an EMT, an instructor, an inspector, and a fire officer. He has degrees from the University of Wisconsin and Manatee Community College. He is a lead instructor for Sarasota County Technical Institute’s Fire Academy and an instructor for Starfire Training Systems. He has been a H.O.T. instructor for FDIC since 1998. SCOTT JOERGER is a captain of Engine 5 of the Rochester (NY) Fire Department. He is also training captain and former chief of the Pittsford (NY) Volunteer Fire Department. He has worked as a wildland firefighter with the U.S. Forest Service in Oregon. He has an associate degree in fire protection and a bachelor’s degree in management. JASON JOHNSON, a 17-year veteran of the fire service, is a lieutenant on Engine 1 in Atlanta (GA) Fire Rescue, where he has served for nine years. Previously, he served as a firefighter in Companies 29 and l5 and in Squad 4. SHAD JOHNSON, a 20-year veteran of the career and volunteer fire service, is a career firefighter with the Charlotte (NC) Fire Department, where he is assigned as engineer on Engine 32 and Hazmat 3. He is a North Carolina fire instructor with specialties in firefighter levels I and II, live structural burn, advanced self-contained breathing apparatus, hazmat operations, and rapid intervention team. RIC JORGE has been a firefighter for Palm Beach County, Florida, since 1992. He is a state-certified instructor 1 and live fire instructor. He teaches extensively in ventilation, ladders, firefighter survival, flashover, rapid intervention, quint/aerial operations, high-rise structure tactics, search and rescue, hose management, room orientation, air management, and entanglement. He has been an instructor for his department for seven years and teaches throughout Florida. PHIL JOSE is a battalion chief and a 25-year veteran of the Seattle (WA) Fire Department, where he is a supervising chief of Battalion 7 and to the Marine Emergency Response team. He has served as a training lieutenant, training captain, and as a member of the Operational Skills Enhancement Program Development Team. He is a nationally recognized instructor for air management and tactical decision making. DON KADERABEK, a 26-year veteran of the Niles (IL) Fire Department, is a lieutenant assigned to Engine 3. RYAN KALIHER joined the fire service as a volunteer in 1999 with Southern Manatee (FL) Fire & Rescue, where he was hired as a full-time firefighter in 2000 and is a lieutenant. ANTHONY (ANDONI) KASTROS, a 25-year veteran of the fire service, is manager of the Sacramento Metro Fire Command Training Center and a line battalion chief. He served for 10 years on CA-TF7 and four years on a Type 1 incident management team. He is author of the book Mastering the Fire Service Assessment Center and the Mastering Fireground Command- Calm the Chaos video series (Fire Engineering) and has been published in Fire Engineering. He has coached thousands of firefighters throughout the country on command, tactics, and leadership. He has a bachelor’s degree in business and human resource management and an associate degree in fire technology. BRIAN P. KAZMIERZAK, EFO, entered the fire service in 1991 and is a shift battalion chief and chief of training for the Penn Twp. (IN) Fire Department. He has 18 years of fire service experience and is also a senior instructor with Traditions Training, LLC, instructing nationally on leadership and operational fire service issues. THOMAS F. KENNEY is a lieutenant with the Hyannis (MA) Fire Department, where he has served for 30 years. He is a rescue team manager and an SCT instructor with the Department of Homeland Security/Federal Emergency Management Agency and MA-TF1. He is a partner in Heavy Rescue Incorporated, a fire service training company. STEPHEN KERBER is a fire research engineer at Underwriters Laboratories (UL). His areas of research include improving firefighter safety, fire service ventilation, lightweight construction, and smoke management fire modeling. He is a 13-year veteran of the fire service; he spent most of his years of service at the College Park (MD) Fire Department. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in fire protection engineering from the University of Maryland and is working on his doctorate in fire safety engineering at Lund University in Sweden. He is also a registered professional engineer.

JOHN KEYES is a captain/paramedic with the Virginia Beach (VA) Fire Department. He is the lead instructor assigned to the Training Division. He is a member of VA-TF2 and a Virginia Department of Fire Programs heavy and tactical rescue instructor. He also has more than 20 years of naval aviation experience as a helicopter crew chief/rescue swimmer. He is assigned to HSC-84, the U.S. Navy's only dedicated Special Operations helicopter squadron. ERRON KINNEY is a former National Football League professional athlete and has served 18 years in the fire and emergency services. He has held many ranks during his fire service career in paid and volunteer organizations. He is the fire and rescue services coordinator for Williamson County, Tennessee. He is a level II fire instructor, a fire officer IV, an incident safety officer, a health and safety officer, a hazmat technician, a technical rescue specialist, and an advocate for the NFFF Everyone Goes Home Program, He has presented classes at FDIC and various other fire service conferences. MIKE KIRBY is a captain with the Cincinnati (OH) Fire Department, where he is assigned to Engine Co. 12. He is an 18-year veteran of the fire service and has worked in urban, suburban, and rural fire departments. He is a fire instructor for the Cincinnati (OH) Fire Department and the Bowling Green State University State Fire School. TOM KIURSKI, a 30-year veteran of the fire service, has served Livonia (MI) Fire & Rescue for the past 26 years as a training coordinator, a lieutenant, a paramedic/firefighter, and the director of fire safety education. He is the author of Creating a Fire Safe Community: A Guide for Fire Safety Educators (Fire Engineering, 1999). He has an associate degree in fire science, a bachelor’s degree in fire and safety engineering technology, and a master’s degree in public administration. He is a Michigan-certified fire instructor and teaches at fire academies in Michigan. BOB KNABBE is a 35-year veteran of the fire service and a 25-year veteran of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY). Previously, he worked for the Atlanta (GA) Fire Department. He is a New York State (NYS)-certified instructor at the FDNY Rescue School and teaches thermal imaging in the NYS and FDNY First Line Supervising Training Program. He has been teaching thermal imaging to firefighters since 1996 and is a partner in Safe IR Inc. He serves as an alternate member on the National Fire Protection Association ESE Committee, responsible for NFPA 1811, Standard for Fire Service Thermal Imaging Training. JERRY KNAPP is a 37-year veteran firefighter/EMT with the West Haverstraw (NY) Fire Department and a training officer at the Rockland County Fire Training Center in Pomona, New York. He is an assistant chief with the Rockland County Hazmat Task Force and a former nationally certified paramedic. He has a degree in fire protection. He authored the Fire Attack chapter in Fire Engineering’s Handbook for Firefighter 1 and II and numerous articles in fire service trade journals.

STEVE KRAFT is a 24-year member and chief of Richmond Hill Fire & Emergency Services in Ontario, Canada. He has completed the certificate in fire service leadership course though Dalhousie University, is a graduate of the fire protection technologist course through the Ontario Fire College, and is working toward a diploma in public administration at Western University. He is an associate instructor at the Ontario Fire College. He has been published in Fire Engineering and Fire Fighting in Canada. He lectures extensively in Ontario, Canada, and was a keynote speaker for FDIC 2012. SCOTT KRAUT is an engine driver at Co. 10 Bailey's Crossroads in Fairfax County, Virginia. He began his fire service career in 1996 and has held various positions throughout his career including captain in field training. He has been a lead instructor for Traditions Training LLC. since 2004. KRISTINA KREUTZER, Ph.D., is a research chemist with DuPont, where she is an assistant chief with the site emergency response team and an assistant chief with the Mill Creek (DE) Fire Company. She obtained her BS in chemistry from the University of Maryland and a Ph.D. in chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She is a nationally certified fire officer II and an instructor at the Delaware State Fire School. BRYANT KRIZIK retired as a chief from the Orland (IL) Fire Protection District after 29 years in the fire service. He has a master’s degree in public administration from Governors State University. He is an instructor for the Illinois Fire Service Institute, Moraine Valley Community College, and the Illinois Society of Fire Service Instructors. He has been with the FDIC 1403 H.O.T. class since its inception in 2003. JASON KRUSEN is special operations chief for the Columbia (SC) Fire Department and has been in the fire service for more than 19 years. He is the president of the Fire Smoke Coalition. He is a planning manager with SC-TF1 and the Type III IMT and the coordinator for the Type II Collapse Search & Rescue Team. CHRIS LANGLOIS, a 24-year veteran of the fire service, has served in volunteer, combination, and career departments and has held the ranks of firefighter, driver, captain, and chief officer. He is a captain with the Omaha (NE) Fire Department Training and Special Operations Bureau and serves as a plans manager with the NE-TF1US&R team. RICK LASKY, a 34-year veteran of the fire service, retired as chief of the Lewisville (TX) Fire Department in 2011, after serving there for 12 years. He began his fire service career as a firefighter in the suburbs on the southwest side of Chicago. While in Illinois, he received the 1996 International Society of Fire Service Instructors “Innovator of the Year” award for his part in developing the “Saving Our Own” program. He served as the co-lead instructor for the H.O.T. Firefighter Survival program at FDIC for more than 10 years, is a long-standing editorial advisory board member for Fire Engineering magazine and also serves on the FDIC advisory board. He is the author of Pride and Ownership--A Firefighter’s Love of the Job (Fire Engineering) and is the co-host for the Fire Engineering Talk Radio show “The Command Post.” He has an AAS degree in fire science from Columbia Southern University and was selected as the CSU 2012 Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) Outstanding Graduate. CORTEZ LAWRENCE has spent his 40-plus-year career in fire departments in all ranks. He managed/taught fire science programs for the USAF-Europe; served as a U.S. State Department fire protection officer; and served as deputy director of public safety in Auburn, Alabama. He joined the U.S. Fire Administration in 2001 as national fire programs director and was promoted to EMI superintendent 2006-2010. He returned to the USFA, where he is an education specialist. BILLY LEACH has been involved in the emergency services since 1976, combining career and volunteer experience. He serves as the developer and senior presenter for BIG RIG RESCUE™. Also, he is a member of the N.C. Emergency Management USAR Task Force 7, sponsored by Ash-Rand Rescue & EMS. He conducts training in vehicle rescue and has presented at various symposia, conferences, rescue schools, and regional fire/rescue training seminars. He is the coauthor of Big Rig Rescue, on the topic of heavy truck anatomy and extrication. BOB LEONARD is a captain with the San Jose (CA) Fire Department and has served in the fire service for more than 25 years. He is state certified as firefighter I and II and as a state fire officer. He is the chairman of the Engine Company Operations committee. He has presented nationally and internationally. JOHN J. LEWIS is a 30-plus-year veteran of the fire service and a ladder company lieutenant with the Passaic (NJ) Fire Department. He is an instructor at the Bergen County (NJ) Fire Academy and an adjunct instructor for Kean University in Union, New Jersey and a member of

the New Jersey State Firefighter Health and Safety Advisory Council. He has New Jersey certification as fire inspector/fire official, level 2 fire instructor, and fire investigator. JOSEPH LIGHT is a 27-year veteran of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), where he has been assigned to the Special Operations Command (SOC) for the past 15 years. He is certified by New York State to teach various disciplines of technical rescue. He is a National Fire Protection Association instructor 2 and is also listed as a level 1 instructor for the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Structural Collapse Technician course. He has been the lead instructor for the FDNY SOC Collapse Technician course since 2005. He has been a member of FEMA NY-TF1 since 1999 and has served as its search team manager since 2006. He has been an FDIC instructor since 2002. LES LOCKWOOD is a battalion chief at the Decatur (IL) Fire Department. He has taught for 31 years with the Illinois Fire Service Institute in live burns, extrication, instructor, and other fire service disciplines at Richland Community College. He has a bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University in fire science management. He has been with the 1403 H.O.T. class since its inception in 2003. MIKE LOMBARDO is a 35-year veteran of the fire service and was the commissioner/chief of the Buffalo (NY) Fire Department from 2006-2010. He is a lead instructor with the Fire Department Training Network in Indiana. He was cited twice for heroism and is the recipient of the FDIC 1999 Training Achievement Award. CHARLES LONG, a 24-year veteran of the fire service, serves as a captain with a metro Atlanta (GA) fire department, where he is assigned to an engine company. BILL LOWE, EMT-P, EFO, LEO is a tenured associate professor of emergency management/ terrorism at Jacksonville (AL) State University. He retired as a battalion chief with 32 years of service from the Clayton County (GA) Fire Department and is also a deputy sheriff/ fugitive investigator with the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office. MATT LUJAN is a 13-year veteran of the fire service and has served for more than 11 years with the Seattle (WA) Fire Department, where he was on Engine Company 28, which serves the Rainier Valley neighborhood of Seattle. He has been teaching the Nozzle Forward class for 2½ years. DANIEL MADRZYKOWSKI, PE, FSFPE, is a fire protection engineer with the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Maryland. RICHARD MARINUCCI has been a chief for more than 27 years. STEPHEN MARSAR is a 21-year veteran of the fire service and a captain in the Fire Department of New York, assigned to Engine Co. 8. He was the recipient of the 2012 Ray Downey Courage and Valor Award. RAY McCORMACK is the co-publisher and editor of Urban Firefighter magazine. He is a lieutenant and 30-year veteran of the Fire Department of New York. He delivered the keynote address at FDIC 2009. He is lead instructor for Urban Essential H.O.T. and is the author of “Tactical Safety,” a weekly safety column. PAT MCCULLOUGH began his fire service as a volunteer firefighter in 2000 in the Juda (WI) Volunteer Fire Department and is a captain in the Brodhead (WI) Volunteer Fire Department. He was instrumental in developing many specialized response programs in the areas of fireground management, heavy rescue, and hazardous materials response. MIKE McEVOY, PhD, NRP, RN, CCRN, is the EMS coordinator for Saratoga County, New York and the EMS technical editor for Fire Engineering. He is a professor emeritus of critical care medicine at Albany (NY) Medical College and continues to practice as a clinical nurse specialist in the Cardiac Surgical ICUs at Albany Medical Center. He is a paramedic for Clifton Park & Halfmoon Ambulance and the chief medical officer for West Crescent (NY) Fire Department. He is a board member of the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs and a frequent speaker at fire, EMS, and medical conferences worldwide. DAVID M. McGRAIL, a 29-year veteran of the fire service, is district chief of the Denver (CO) Fire Department. He instructs internationally on a wide range of fire service topics, specializing in high-rise firefighting and engine company standpipe operations. He was a keynote speaker on U.S. high-rise firefighting operations at the Fire and Emergency Services Asia (FESA) Singapore 2005; the keynote speaker at the British Columbia Fire Training Officer’s Association 2008 annual conference, Vancouver; and at FDIC 2009. He is a member of the FDIC educational advisory board and Fire Engineering editorial advisory board. MICHAEL McLEIEER has been in the fire service for 18 years and is the director of public education with the Merrimac (MA) Fire Department. He is also an instructor with the National Fire Academy and the Fire Prevention & Juvenile Firesetting Training and a scheduling coordinator for the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy/Massachusetts Department of Fire Services. He is the vice chair of the River Valley Juvenile Firesetter Coalition serving Essex County, Massachusetts, and the president and founder of E.S.C.A.P.E. Inc., a non-profit public charity that works full time to teach fire prevention as well as CPR and first aid. TODD McNEAL is chief of Twain Harte Fire and Rescue in Tuolumne County, California. Previously, he was a captain for the Sonora Fire Department and served as the wildland training officer. He has a diverse background in wildland and structural fire management and suppression and has been serving as a division/group supervisor on a Federal Type II incident management team for the past six years. He has been an instructor for the past decade and has numerous incident command system qualifications in wildland operations. He is a registered instructor with California State Fire Training and a California fire officer. He has a bachelor’s degree in natural resource management. RICK MEYERS is a captain on Truck 14 for Atlanta (GA) Fire Rescue and a 26-year veteran of the department. He had served as a firefighter in Company 10 and Squad 4 for 11 years and as a firefighter and a lieutenant in Engine 19, Company 38, and Squad 4. He is a partner with East Coast Rescue Solutions. KEVIN MILAN is a captain with South Metro (CO) Fire Rescue. He has been in the fire service for 20 years. He is a graduate of the National Fire Academy (NFA) Executive Fire Officer Program and obtained Chief Fire Officer designation through the Center for Public Safety Excellence. He has an M.S. degree in executive fire service leadership and is pursuing a Ph.D. in fire and emergency management through Oklahoma State University. RANDY MILLER is a 20-year veteran of the Fire Department of New York, where he is assigned to the Emergency Services unit. CHRIS MINICHIELLO, a 16-year veteran of the fire service, is a member of the Fire Department of New York, where he is assigned to Ladder 126 in South Jamaica, Queens. MITCHELL JR. is a lieutenant in the Fire Department of New York. He previously served with Fairfax County (VA) Fire & Rescue. He has been in the fire service for 20 years. JOHN MITTENDORF was a 30-year veteran of the Los Angeles City (CA) Fire Department when he retired as a battalion chief. He has an associate degree in fire science and has been a national and international instructor in fireground operations for the past 27 years. He was the recipient of the Fire Engineering Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. ERIC MOHR is a 13-year veteran of the Fishers (IN) Fire Department, where he is a lieutenant on Ladder 91. He is actively involved in training shift and regional personnel for technical rescue. He owns and manages a large acreage farm in Central Indiana, where he maintains and operates numerous tractors and implements, including two semitractor-trailer units. He is responsible for all the maintenance and operation of the semis, which gives him extensive knowledge of the ins and outs of tractor-trailer combinations as well as of farm rescue. He is a certified National Fire Protection Association 1403 live fire instructor. FRANK MONTAGNA, a 41-year veteran of the Fire Department of New York, has been a battalion chief for 25 years. He is assigned to the department’s Training Academy, where he is responsible for curriculum and officer development and simulation training. He wrote the department’s gas and electric procedure manuals. He is one of the creators of Fire Engineering’s simulations. He has a BS in fire science. He teaches a course for John Jay College based on his book Responding to “Routine” Emergencies. He has published numerous fire-related articles and frequently lectures on these topics. MARK MOORMAN is a 26 year veteran of the Indianapolis Fire Department. He spent 15 years on Engine 10 and is a captain in the Training Division. He is a certified flashover instructor, safety officer, fire inspector I/II, instructor I/II/III, Scott level III tech, hazmat tech, and EMT. ROBERT G. MORAN is chief of the Brewster (MA) Fire Department. He is a 31-year veteran of the fire service and retired as chief of the Englewood (NJ) Fire Department after 25 years of service. He has a bachelor’s degree in fire science from New Jersey City State College, a master’s degree in administrative science from Fairleigh Dickinson University, national certification as a public manager, and chief fire officer designation from the Center for Public Safety Excellence. He has served in all line officer positions during his 31 years as a volunteer firefighter with the Leonia (NJ) and Demarest (NJ) Volunteer Fire Departments. He is a founding partner of “Jersey Guys” Fire Service Training LLC and an adjunct instructor for Kean University and the New Jersey Division of Fire Safety. ROBERT MORRIS is the captain of Fire Department of New York Rescue Company 1. He co-authored FDNY’s Forcible Entry Manual, which is used throughout the fire service. He lectures frequently on forcible entry, rescue operations, and truck company tactics. He is an instructor for the Forcible Entry portion of FDIC’s Urban Essentials program. ROBERT MORRIS JR. is a captain assigned to the Special Operations Command of the Fire Department of New York. He is an instructor at the FDNY Rescue School. He has taught forcible entry at FDIC and will be an instructor for the Forcible Entry portion of FDIC’s Urban Essentials program.

WALTER A. MORRIS is a 35-year veteran of the fire service and chief of the Jefferson (ME) Fire Department. An instructor for 25 years, he is a fire training program manager for the Maine Fire Training Program and an instructor at the Rockland County (NY) Fire Training Center. He has a bachelor’s degree in public safety and a master’s degree in fire protection management from John Jay College in New York City. He is a certified fire protection specialist and a nationally certified fire instructor and incident safety officer and serves on the board of directors of the National Fire Academy Alumni Association. NEAL MULLANE JR. is a captain in the Boston (MA) Fire Department, a position he has held since 2006, where he served also as a lieutenant and first line supervisor of the fire suppression force, taught recruit classes at the Boston Fire Academy, and authored the successful federal grants in 2008, 2010, and 2012 (pending). He served in the Fire Department of New York from 1995 to 1998, where he was a member of the fire suppression force serving in Brooklyn and Manhattan. He has been a Massachusetts State Fire Academy instructor since 2012. He has a BS degree in fire science, an associate degree in fire science, is working toward an MPA degree, and has a certificate in paramedicine from Cape Cod Community College and is a MAC-certified paramedic. DR. BETH MURPHY is a psychologist and the CEO and president of M2 Resource Group, Inc. She retired as a firefighter from the Bellevue (WA) Fire Department. In her private therapy practice, she specializes in working with fire, police, and the military with a focus on workplace stress, post tarumatic stress disorder, cancer, and traumatic brain injury. As the CEO of M2 Resource Group, she consults on issues of diversity, stress, mental health, and harassment and discrimination in the workplace. While in the fire service, she was a firefighter/EMT and a member of the department’s hazardous materials response unit. She was also a member of the Peer Support Team, which provided support and critical incident stress management. DAVID MURPHY is a 21-year veteran of the fire service and chief of the Wyckoff (NJ) Fire Department. He is certified in crash investigation and is a fire and arson detection and an active shooter instructor. He is a 15-year police officer and a member of NJPBA Local #261. A lieutenant, he also serves as the emergency management coordinator for Wyckoff . JACK J. MURPHY, MA, is a principal of Jack J. Murphy (JJM) & Associates, LLC, consulting in fire and life safety practices. He was the director of life safety for Webvan Group in Foster City, California (2000-2001); vice-president-corporate global life safety for Citigroup in New York City (1996-2000); and fire safety director for The New York Hospital/Cornell University Medical Center in New York City (1987-1996). He is an adjunct lecturer for Kean University in New Jersey, the NJ Division of Fire Safety, and the City University of New York-John Jay College of Criminal Justice Fire Science Program. He is the author of RICS/Rapid Incident Command System (Fire Engineering, 1998) and the Pre-Incident Planning chapter in Fire Engineering’s Handbook for Firefighter I and II. He was the recipient of the Tom Brennan Lifetime Achievement award in 2012. JOHN K. MURPHY, JD, PA-C, MS, EFO, retired as a deputy chief after 32 years of career fire department service. His past fire and medical experience has been as a paramedic/firefighter for more than 20 years; paramedic program director, chief fire officer, chief of training, emergency operations chief, and health and safety officer. He is a physician’s assistant (PA) and fellow, American College of Clinicians, and has been a practicing PA since 1977. His focus is on urgent, emergency, and prehospital medical care. He was a U.S. Navy corpsman with the Marine Corps. CHRIS MURRAY works full time for the United States Government in emergency services communications and is a volunteer with Arapahoe Fire-Rescue, Pamlico County, North Carolina, where he serves as the assistant chief of operations. He is assistant fire marshal, emergency management coordinator, and fire/arson investigator for Pamlico County. He teaches firefighter I and II classes along with advanced officer level classes at the local community college. SCOTT G. NACHEMAN is a vice president in the Chicago (IL) office of the Investigations Division of the engineering firm Thornton Tomasetti. GREGORY NOLL is a senior partner with Hildebrand and Noll Associates, a consulting firm specializing in emergency planning, response, and incident management issues. He also serves as the program manager for the South Central Pennsylvania Regional Task Force, as well as the hazmat/weapons of mass destruction manager for the PA-TF1 federal urban search and rescue unit. A member of the U.S. Air Force Reserve with more than 29 years of service, he has served as a subject matter expert for various Department of Defense hazardous materials and counter-terrorism response training programs. He has served in the fire service and emergency response community for 41 years. He is the co-author of nine textbooks on hazardous materials emergency response and management topics. In 2011, he was the recipient of the John M. Eversole Lifetime Achievement Award by the International Association of Fire Chiefs. JAMES NOLL has been a career firefighter with the Fort Wayne (IN) Fire Department since October 1991; he is a captain assigned to Engine Company 5. In Fort Wayne, he was the department health and safety officer for three years. He is a State of Indiana Fire Training Systems District 3 Training Council member/instructor for Allen County and a certified ACE IAFF/IAFC peer fitness trainer. JOHN NORMAN retired as deputy assistant chief from the Fire Department of New York, where he served 27 of his 40-plus years in the fire service. P.J. NORWOOD is a deputy chief training officer for the East Haven (CT) Fire Department and has served four years with the Connecticut Army National Guard. FL-TF2, which he served as a rescue team manager. He was promoted to division chief of the Special Operations Command in 2012. DENNIS O’BRIEN, a member of the fire service for 22 years, has been a member of the Roswell (GA) Fire Department for 18 years. Previously, he served in the Alpharetta and Marietta (GA) Fire Departments. ROBERT O’DONALD has been a member of the Charleston (SC) Fire Department for 26 years and serves as an assistant chief in operations. He is a South Carolina Fire Academy certified instructor. He has an associate degree in fire science and has been an FDIC H.O.T. instructor for the past nine years. PHILIP OAKES is the trainer/national program director for the National Association of State Fire Marshals. He previously was the state training director for the Wyoming State Fire Marshal’s Office. He is the chief of Laramie County Fire District #4 and the volunteer ambulance director and an elected councilman for the community of Burns, Wyoming. JACOB ORESHAN III is a deputy chief with the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control, Hazardous Materials/Homeland Security Bureau. DAVID RICKERT is a firefighter and 27-year veteran of the Milwaukee (WI) Fire Department, where he is assigned to Truck 9. He has written extensively on peaked-roof ventilation for Urban Firefighter magazine and is a member of the Peaked Roof Ventilation Study at UL. He is an instructor for the Steeply Pitched Roof Operations segment of FDIC’s Urban Essentials program. JONATHAN RIGOLO, a 30-year veteran of the fire service, is a captain with the Virginia Beach (VA) Fire Department, where he is assigned to Fire Station 10. He is a rescue team manager for the VA-TF2. He recently completed a tour at the VBFD’s fire training division, where he led the implementation of positive pressure attack for the department. RICKY RILEY is operations chief for the Clearwater (FL) Fire & Rescue and a member of the Kentland Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as chief of department. He also served for 20 years with the Fairfax County Fire & Rescue before his retirement in 2005. TODD RISHLING has more than 20 years of experience in fire rescue. He is responsible for upkeep and technology networking of the sonar team in the State of Illinois MABAS Divisions; flight paramedic, CCEMT-P Flight for Life McHenry; director/trainer for a Specialized Water Rescue Response Team; member of the Technical Rescue Team and Hazmat Team; and Dive Rescue Team leader for MABAS Division 1 and 5. STEVE ROBERTSON began his fire service career in 1988 as a volunteer firefighter. He became a full-time firefighter in 1989. In 1993 he began his career with Columbus (OH) Division of Fire and was assigned to Ladder Co. 1, a year on Squad 23, and then was assigned to Engine Co. 2. He was promoted to lieutenant in 2002 and was assigned to the relief officer position in the First Battalion. In 2010, he was detailed to the Training Academy and placed in charge of the Division Operations program. For the past 17 years, he has also been a state certified fire safety instructor and paramedic as well as a member of the USAR Central Ohio Strike Team. CHRIS ROBINS has been in the fire service for 20 years and is a lieutenant in the Teaneck (NJ) Fire Department. He is an emergency medical technician and a level 2 fire instructor. He has an associate degree in applied science. ERICH RODEN is the co-editor of Urban Firefighter magazine and is a battalion chief assigned to the Training Division of the Milwaukee (WI) Fire Department. He is on the Executive Advisory Board for FDIC, is a lead instructor for the FDIC Urban Essentials H.O.T. evolution, and was previously a H.O.T. instructor for the Engine Company Operations evolution. MATT ROSE, a 911 coordinator, served as a paramedic for 15 years; was a member of the Orangeville (IL) Volunteer Fire Department for four years; and served as deputy coroner, an emergency department technician, and as an orthopedic technician. He has taught with Stateline Farm Rescue for 14 years; teaches classes for the National Education Center for Ag Safety in Peosta, Iowa; and instructs at numerous fire schools and fire departments in Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Missouri. DENNIS L. RUBIN is the principal partner in the fire protection-consulting firm D.L. Rubin & Associates. His experience in fire and rescue spans more than 35 years. He has served as a company officer; a command level officer; and chief in major cities including Dothan, Alabama; Norfolk, Virginia; and Atlanta, Georgia. In 1994, he served as the president of the State Fire Chiefs Association of Virginia. He held several positions with the International Association of Fire Chiefs, including a two-year term as the Health and Safety Committee Chair. He was the host Fire Chief for the “Wingspread IV and V” conferences held in 1996 and 2006. ALAN RUFER began his career in the fire service in 1988 and serves as the division chief of training for the Monroe (WI) Fire Department. He has an MBA with an emphasis in organizational development and has written for national and state fire service publications. He is the author of "Help Wanted: Volunteer Recruitment and Retention." He has been training firefighters and EMS providers for more than 20 years and is a frequent speaker at local and regional training conferences. He is on the Company Officer Leadership Committee for the International Association of Fire Chiefs. MATT RUNTE has been a firefighter for the Seattle (WA) Fire Department for 11 years. He has spent the past five years on Engine Company 25 and has taught with the Nozzle Forward team for the past two years. MATHEW C. RUSH is a 17-year veteran of the Austin (TX) Fire Department, where he is a captain in the Terrorism/Weapons of Mass Destruction office. He is an FDIC H.O.T. instructor for Engine Company Operations and Truck Company Operations. He has published articles for Fire Engineering and FireNuggets.com and is the South and Southwest region seminar host for its lecture series. MIKE RUSSELL, a 30-year veteran of the fire service, is a battalion chief with the Dalton (GA) Fire Department. He is also a member of the department’s special operations team. He is a structural fire control program instructor with the Georgia Fire Academy and instructs with the Georgia Smoke Diver program. CHUCK RYAN, a 21-year veteran of the fire service, is a deputy chief and a 19-year member of the Fairfax County (VA) Fire and Rescue Department, where he is assigned as a shift commander in the Operations Bureau. He has a bachelor's degree from Siena College and a juris doctor degree from Pepperdine University School of Law. He has presented at FDIC and is an instructor at the National Fire Academy. He is enrolled in the NFA's Executive Fire Officer Program.

JOHN J. SALKA JR. is a 32-year veteran of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), from which he retired as a battalion chief in the Bronx. He worked in many of the busiest units in the FDNY including Rescue 3, Squad 1, and Engine 48. He has instructed at the FDNY Fire Academy in several capacities including the Battalion Chiefs Command course, the Captains Management program, and the Probationary Firefighters School. He also trains around the nation with his company Fire Command Training. JAMES F. SANDAS is a 26-year veteran of the Fire Department of New York, where he assigned to Rescue Company 2 and is chief of training. His fire service career began 38 years ago with the Hempstead (NY) Volunteer Fire Department. He is a New York State certified clinical lab instructor with the Nassau County EMS Academy. He is a lead instructor with P.L. Vulcan Fire Training Concepts. He has a BA degree in fire and emergency management from John Jay College of Criminal Justice. EDWARD SARACENO, a 37-year veteran of the fire service, is a lieutenant in the Teaneck (NJ) Fire Department, where he has served for 21 years and supervises the Mask Service Unit Repair Division. He is a licensed fire inspector. He retired from the Bergenfield (NJ) Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as chief. He is a level 1 instructor and teaches at the Bergenfield Fire Training Center. CHAD SARTISON had an 18-year career in the financial industry and was recognized by Calgary Inc. magazine as one of Calgary’s Top 40 under-40 entrepreneurs in 2007. In 2004, he founded The Fire Within (now Firefighters 1st), which has helped firefighters raise more than $3.5 million for volunteer firefighters and has donated an additional $500,000 in equipment and training. He is chairman of the organization, which is in its eighth year and has expanded across Canada and throughout the United States. He is a member of the board of directors of the Canadian Fallen Firefighters Foundation. SALVATORE SCARPA has been a firefighter and law enforcement officer for more than 25 years. He has been a fire captain for 15 years in Grandview, Missouri. He has been a full-time faculty member with Metropolitan Community College (MCC) for more than over 10 years and is the chief of training at the MCC-Blue River, Public Safety Training Institute. He is an instructor in public safety and public safety psychology and a graduate of the National Fire Academy. He has several advanced degrees: an AAS in criminal justice; a BA in social psychology, with an emphasis in public safety; and a master’s degree in conflict management and dispute resolution. RANDY SCHMITZ has been involved in the extrication field for 20 years and is a firefighter/extrication instructor with the Calgary (AB, Canada) Fire Department. He has competed in regional, international, and worldwide extrication competitions/challenges. He is educational chairman for the Transport Emergency Rescue Committee in Canada and the Alberta Vehicle Extrication Association. He is a T.E.R.C international extrication judge for Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. He filmed “Hybrid Extrication” for Discovery Channel Network, chaired the 2010 North American Vehicle Rescue Challenge, and developed and taught the course for the Big Rig H.O.T. symposium.

ROB SCHNEPP is chief of special operations for the Alameda County (CA) Fire Department. He is the author of Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations, an advisory board member for Fire Engineering; a member of the NFPA Technical Committee on Hazardous Materials Response Personnel; a task force member charged with revising NFPA 473, Standard for Competencies for EMS Personnel Responding to Hazardous Materials; a co-author and instructor of the “Special Operations Program” for the National Fire Academy; an instructor for the U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency; a founding member of the Cyanide Poisoning Treatment Coalition; and a board member of the Fire Smoke Coalition. LARRY SCHULTZ is a 30-year veteran of the fire service. He retired as the assistant chief of operations for the Washington DC Fire Department. He is a volunteer captain with the Bowie (MD) Volunteer Fire Department and a firefighter with the Intercourse (PA) Fire Company. He is an instructor for Traditions Training LLC. JIM SEWNIG is a member of the Chicago (IL) Fire Department, assigned to Squad 1. He has been in the fire service for more than 19 years. He has an AAS degree in fire science and a bachelor’s degree in business management from Benedictine University. He is a field instructor for the University of Illinois Fire Service Institute and a member of the Chicago Fire Department Pipes & Drums. JOHN SHAFER is a lieutenant and the training officer for the Greencastle (IN) Fire Department and the Indiana Homeland Security District 7 fire training coordinator. He is a 17-year veteran of the career and volunteer fire service. He was an advisor to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security for the state’s development of the Fire Training System of Indiana and assisted in the development of the District 7 Training Council and the District 7 Response Task Force. He developed and manages the social networking site Green Building Construction for the Fire Service on Facebook and is owner/writer for Green Maltese LLC http://greenmaltese.com. TOM W. SHAND is a 40-year veteran of the fire service. He began his career with the College Park (MD) Fire Department in 1970 while attending the University of Maryland. Over the years, he has served with departments in Pennsylvania and New York. He is a nationally certified level II fire service instructor. His career includes having worked with the Public Protection Department of the Insurance Services Office and holding various sales and engineering positions during the 25 years he worked in the fire apparatus industry. He is a partner at Emergency Vehicle Response, where he conducts fire protection surveys and is involved in apparatus engineering work. DAN SHAW has been a member of the fire service since 1992 and is a captain with the Fairfax County (VA) Fire & Rescue Department. He has instructed at fire service expos, has written for Fire Engineering, and co-hosts a monthly podcast for fireengineering.com. He instructs nationally on fireground operations as a vice president of Traditions Training, LLC. CRAIG H. SHELLEY is a 40-plus-year member of the fire service. For 26 years, he served with the Fire Department of New York with Special Operations Command; he retired as the chief of marine operations. After retiring from the FDNY, he was appointed as the fire chief for the Rutland (VT) Fire Department. He then served in the Middle East as a fire protection

technical advisor for Saudi Aramco. He is a fire and safety consultant for World Safe International, LLC. He has a BS degree in fire service administration and an M.S. degree in executive fire service leadership. He is the author of many articles as well as a co-author of Industrial Firefighting for Municipal Firefighters (Fire Engineering, 2007). DAN SHERIDAN is a 26-year veteran of the Fire Department of New York, where he is a battalion chief. He has worked in Harlem and the Bronx for most of his career. He is a national instructor and the founder and chief operating officer of Mutual Aid Americas, an international nonprofit training group to assist firefighters. Previously, he instructed at the Rockland County (NY) Fire Academy. He is a frequent contributor to Fire Engineering and has a monthly column on FireEngineering.com. He authored Chapter 12 (Forcible Entry) for Fire Engineering’s Handbook for Firefighter I and II. THOMAS SHERVINO has spent more than 30 years in the fire service. He retired from the Oak Lawn (IL) Fire Department, where he served most of his career on Squad I, a heavy-duty rescue unit. He is a field staff instructor with the Fire Service Institute in Illinois. He was one of the creators of the Saving Our Own program. He has been published in Fire Engineering. Since 1998, he has taught at FDIC in the H.O.T. Firefighter Safety and Survival programs. WILLIAM SHOULDIS served in line and staff positions with the Philadelphia (PA) Fire Department for 35 years. He is an instructor at the National Emergency Training Center and a guest speaker at the Graduate School at St. Joseph’s University. TOM SHUBERT, a 28-year veteran of the fire service, has spent the past 20 years with the Canton (OH) Fire Department, where he is an assistant chief. He is a field instructor with the University of Illinois Fire Service Institute teaching in the Cornerstone, live fire, and officer programs. He is the team leader for Region 9 MABAS 53 Technical Rescue Team. JEFF SHUPE is a career firefighter with more than 38 years of service. He is a division chief with the North Myrtle Beach (SC) Department of Fire and Rescue. He retired in 2011 from the Cleveland (OH) Fire Department. He has also served as a volunteer firefighter. He is an Ohio certified fire instructor. He has been a field training officer for the Ohio Fire Academy since 1987. He has an associate degree in fire technology from a local community college and attended the University of Cincinnati fire protection engineering program. He has been an FDIC HOT Engine Ops instructor and classroom presenter for many years. RON SIARNICKI, the National Fallen Firefighter Foundation (NFFF) executive director, began his career as a firefighter with the Prince George's County (MD) Fire/EMS Department in 1978 and, over 24 years, progressed through the ranks to chief. He also served on the Joint Fire and Police Pension Board for four years. In July 2001, he retired from the Prince George's County to take the position with the NFFF. He delivers presentations at fire and emergency conferences and meetings across the country, increasing awareness of the Foundation, the efforts of its prevention work, and support for the families of the fallen. He received the Tom Brennan Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010. He has bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Maryland University College (UMUC) and served as a UMUC faculty member for the fire science curriculum.

JIM SILVERNAIL is a captain in the St. Louis County (MO) Fire Department. He is a resident contract instructor at the National Fire Academy, a lead instructor at the St. Louis County Fire Academy, and a member of MO-TF1. He is a rescue/engine company officer and a shift training officer. He has been published in Fire Engineering and is writing a book on suburban fire tactics for Fire Engineering. TOM SITZ is a lieutenant and 28-year veteran of the Painesville Twp. (OH) Fire Department. He is an instructor for Lakeland Community College in the fire science program and for the Auburn Career Center firefighter certification program. He has authored numerous articles for Fire Engineering. DENISE L. SMITH, Ph.D., is a professor of health and exercise sciences at Skidmore College, where she directs the First Responder Health and Safety Laboratory, and a research scientist at the University of Illinois Fire Service Institute. She has coauthored an exercise physiology textbook and an advanced cardiovascular exercise physiology textbook and has contributed to a textbook on live fire training. She has conducted far-reaching research on the cardiovascular strain associated with firefighting and has lectured extensively on health and safety issues in the fire service. She is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and a member of the National Fire Protection Association Fire Service Occupational Safety and Health committee. GERARD SMITH JR. is a firefighter with the Baltimore City (MD) Fire Department, assigned to Truck Company 15. He is a public safety SCUBA instructor for Dive Rescue International and Baltimore City’s Dive Rescue Team. He has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Loyola University of Maryland. He has written several articles for Urban Firefighter magazine and presented at FDIC for the first time in 2012. GREG SMITH is a lieutenant with and an 18-year veteran of the Fishers (IN) Fire Department, assigned to the heavy rescue company. In addition to his company officer responsibilities, he oversees the technical rescue operations for his shift. He has been an active instructor for recruit academies and area fire departments for more than 15 years. He also works on a large Central Indiana grain farm. His primary responsibility is the farm’s trucking operation; he operates and maintains semitractor/trailers on a daily basis. JIM SMITH is a 20-year veteran of the fire service and has spent the past 12 years with the Fire Department of New York. Previously, he served with the New Rochelle (NY) Fire Department. He is a nationally certified fire instructor and an FDIC H.O.T. instructor for Engine Company Essentials. JONAH SMITH is a captain with the Charlotte (NC) Fire Department and an active volunteer firefighter with the Pleasant Valley (SC) Fire Department. He is an adjunct professor for Fayetteville State University's fire administration program and Rowan Cabbarrus Community College's fire protection technology program. He is the secretary of the Health and Safety Committee and chair for International Association of Fire Fighters Local 660. KYLE SMITH is a lieutenant with Cobb County (GA) Fire and Emergency Services, assigned to Engine Company 19. He has been in the fire service for 18 years and worked in career and volunteer fire departments. He also works as a consultant for a fire protection engineering firm specializing in big box retail. RON SMITH is a 22-year veteran of the fire service and a battalion chief in the Training Division of the Gary (IN) Fire Department. He is an adjunct instructor for the Indiana Department of Homeland Security Firefighter Training System. He is an instructor for the Flat Roof Operations portion of the FDIC H.O.T. Urban Essentials evolution. JACK SORRELLS, a 24-year veteran of the fire service, is a lieutenant with Cobb County (GA) Fire and Emergency Services, where is the training coordinator of the hazmat team. He is a lead instructor with the Georgia Smoke Diver Program, where he is instrumental in the advancement of the course props. He is an adjunct instructor with the Texas and Tennessee Smoke Diver classes. He has an associate degree in fire science technology and a BBA degree in finance. RON SPADAFORA, a 34-year veteran of the fire service, is an assistant chief in the Fire Department of New York and the chief of logistics in the Bureau of Operation. He has written numerous articles for WNYF and serves on its advisory board. He has also written for Fire Engineering, Size-Up, and the American Journal of Industrial Medicine. He has taught fire science at John Jay College for more than 20 years as an adjunct professor and is the senior instructor for Fire Technology Incorporated. PAUL SPURGEON has served with the Denver (CO) Fire Department for more than 20 years. He began his career in 1991. In 1998, he was promoted to engineer and was assigned to Engine 7 in northwest Denver, his current position. He received his AAS degree in fire science technology from Red Rocks Community College. TREVOR STEEDMAN is a 24-year veteran of the fire service and the owner of Strike the Box Training, LLC. He is a career lieutenant with the Ocean City (MD) Fire Department, where he is a shift commander and heads the Special Operations section. He has a BS degree in fire science. He was deployed as a team leader (Operation Lifeline) during Hurricane Katrina and served at the request of a neighboring state on its Incident Management Team in the aftermath of a line-of-duty death. He is a founding member and current president of the Ocean City FOOLS (Alpha Chapter). ROGER STEGER JR. is a firefighter with the Baltimore (MD) Fire Department and Kentland (MD) Volunteer Fire Department. He is an instructor with the Truck Company Essentials H.O.T. program and a member of the Traditions Training Group. LES STEPHENS, a 21-year veteran of the fire service, is the chief of the San Marcos (TX) Fire Department. He is certified as a master firefighter and an instructor with the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. He has served as his department’s training instructor and is an instructor at Collin County Community College in McKinney, Texas, and at Texas A&M University

Municipal Fire School. He has an associate degree in fire protection from Tarrant County Community College. He is enrolled in the National Fire Academy’s EFO program. DOUG STEPHENSON, a 20-year veteran of the fire service, is a lieutenant in an engine company for a metro Atlanta (GA) fire department. His duties include coordinating training in special operations, fireground management, firefighter survival, and live fire exercises. He is a lead instructor for various special operations programs, including the Georgia Smoke Diver Program, with the Georgia Fire Academy. He is a principal member of National Fire Protection Association’s Special Operations Protective Clothing and Equipment Committee and the co-owner of www.AxcessRescue.com, a highly specialized, vertical response training company. EUGENE STOLOWSKI has been a firefighter with the Fire Department of New York for 14 years and a member of the fire service for 22 years. He is a nationally certified instructor and safety officer. HUGH STOTT is a deputy chief for the West Chicago (IL) Fire District. He has also been a field instructor for the University of Illinois Fire Service Institute since 1983. He has been the lead instructor for the Institute’s Breathing Apparatus Specialist class (Smoke Divers). DALE STRAIN is a lieutenant with 27 years of service with the Indianapolis (IN) Fire Department and is assigned to Engine 8. He spent 10 years in the training division conducting all aspects of training. DANNY STRATTON is a 26-year veteran firefighter with experience in the volunteer and career fire service and as a member of the U.S. Army. He is a captain with the Camden City (NJ) Fire Department, a course coordinator at the Camden County Emergency Training Center, and an instructor for Safety and Survival LLC. He is a rescue specialist with New Jersey’s USAR team. He has an associate degree in fire science from Camden County Community College. PAUL STRONG is a 22-year veteran of the fire service, 16 of those years with the Valley (WA) Regional Fire Authority. He finished a four-year tour as the training division captain in his organization as well as a member of the King County Fire Training Officers Association and the King County Zone 3 Training Officers Association. He has served as a member of the technical rescue team and medical specialist program and has 18 years of experience with public speaking and fire service education. MATT STROUD, president and owner of MGS Tech, is a 22-year veteran of Toyota Motor Corporation as a master diagnostic technician, certified in vehicle technologies including hybrids. He founded MGS TECH in 2007 with the goal of teaching firefighters/EMS personnel how to safely manage hybrid and other new technology vehicle incidents. He contributes articles regularly to Fire Engineering. JACK SULLIVAN, CSP, CFPS, is the director of training for the Emergency Responder Safety Institute. He retired as a lieutenant and a safety officer from Lionville (PA) Fire-Rescue. He has more than 30 years of experience as an instructor and works on various national committees dealing with traffic incident management and roadway incident safety for the fire service.

STEFAN SVENSSON began his career as a firefighter in the Swedish Air Force in 1986. In 1989, he earned a bachelor’s degree in fire protection engineering and, in 2002, a Ph.D. at Lund University in Sweden. During the past 17 years, he has been involved in experimental and theoretical investigations on firefighting tactics, including firefighting methods and command and control. He is the author of several books, scientific articles, and reports. He is involved with the local fire brigade as a firefighter/crew commander. RICK SWALES is a firefighter with the Coweta County (GA) Fire Department, where he is on a rescue company. He coordinates and conducts training in fireground management, special operations, and live fire workshops for the department. He assists with advanced fireground operations and firefighter survival training with the Georgia Smoke Diver Program; he is a lead instructor in specialized rescue and rope access. MATT SZPINDOR, a 25-year veteran of the fire service, is a lieutenant with the Fire Department of New York, where he is an instructor at the Special Operations Command Technical Rescue School. Previously, he was assigned to Squad 1 in Brooklyn. He has been an FDIC H.O.T. instructor for the past 10 years. TODD TAYLOR is a battalion chief with the Wayne Township (IN) Fire Department. He has been in the fire service for 26 years, both with the United States Air Force and another municipal department in Indiana. He is the owner of Advanced Rescue Solutions, which specializes in technical rescue training. He is a member of IN-TF. JOHN TEW, a 21-year veteran of the fire service, has been a member of the Fire Department of New York for 14 years and is a firefighter in Rescue Company 4. He instructs at the Special Operations Command Training School. Previous assignments include Engines 307 and 318 and Ladder 143. He has served through all of the ranks of the Hagerman (NY) Fire Department, where he is a training officer. LOREN TEWES is a lieutenant with the Indianapolis (IN) Fire Department and is a 23-year veteran of the fire service. He assists the Training Division as a shift training officer. J. SCOTT THOMPSON, chief of the Colony (TX) Fire Department, began his fire service career in 1981 and served as a career and volunteer firefighter in large and small organizations. He has been a presenter and H.O.T. instructor at FDIC since 2002. He has a bachelor’s degree in emergency administration and planning and is a certified public manager. WILLIE THOMPSON is a firefighter with the Indianapolis (IN) Fire Department and is an aerial instructor in the Training Division. He spent ten years as a firefighter in the Air Force, four of those years as an instructor at the Air Force Academy for Fire Protection, where he received the certification of master instructor. He also teaches state-level classes such as instructor I, II/III, and fire officer I. ERIC R. TOLLUND entered the fire service as a volunteer in 1996 and is a firefighter with Denver (CO) Fire Department Engine Co. 3. He was a guest firefighter in Norway.

DAVID TRAIFOROS is a 40-year veteran of the fire service and chief of the Berkeley (IL) Fire Department. Previously, he served as chief of the Franklin Park (IL) Fire Department from which he retired after 30 years of service. He is an instructor for the Northern Illinois Public Safety Training Academy (NIPSTA) in Glenview, Illinois. He has been an instructor and speaker at FDIC for several years and instructs nationally. TONY TRICARICO has been a member of the fire service since 1977 and joined the Fire Department of New York in 1981. In 2002, he was assigned to the Special Operations Command where he served as the captain of Squad 252 until his retirement in 2008. He is a national and New York state certified fire instructor and has instructed at the FDNY Technical Rescue School, Command School, and Task Force 1 and was a former deputy chief instructor at the Suffolk County Fire Academy. He is a member of the Mount Sinai Volunteer Fire Department on Long Island and a former chief. DANIEL M. TROXELL, a 34-year veteran of the fire service, is the captain of Truck Company 6 in the Washington (DC) Fire Department. A Pro Board-certified level III instructor, he serves as an adjunct instructor with the DC Fire Department Training Academy. He is an instructor for Traditions Training, LLC, a company specializing in combat-ready street-smart firefighter training. In addition, he manages Troxfire Training Solutions, LLC, which develops realistic training props and classes for truck company operations. He has a BS degree in fire protection engineering and an M.S. degree in applied management, both from the University of Maryland at College Park. CYNTHIA ROSS TUSTIN has been the deputy chief for the Bradford West Gwillimbury Fire and Emergency Service and the Barrie Fire and Emergency Services, Canada. She has 25 years in the fire service and is a program specialist with the Office of the Fire Marshal. She has worked as a critical care nurse, a volunteer firefighter, and an instructor with the Georgian College Fire Pre-Service Program. She has been a speaker at FDIC and has been published in fire service magazines and journals throughout Canada and the United States. ROBERT TYLER, a 37-year veteran firefighter, is the chief in Sandpoint, Idaho, where he has served for 30 years. Previously, he was a firefighter, an engineer, a captain, and a department training officer. He served on the Idaho Emergency Services Training Board for seven years and is an active member in the Northern Idaho Fire Chief’s Association and the Idaho Fire Chief’s Association. He has been teaching at FDIC since 2004. MARK VAN DER FEYST, a member of the Woodstock (Ont., Canada) Fire Department, began his career in the fire service in 1998 with the Cranberry Township (PA) Volunteer Fire Company, where he served as a firefighter and training officer for four years. He then joined the Mississauga (Can.) Fire & Emergency Services, where he served for three years. Before joining the fire service, he was a design engineer for Simplex Grinnell for five years. He graduated as a fire protection engineering technologist from the Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technologies and from the Justice Institute of British Columbia with a bachelor’s degree in fire and life safety studies. He is pursuing a master’s degree in safety, security, and emergency management through Eastern Kentucky University..

CURT VARONE has more than 39 years of experience in the fire service, from which he retired in 2008 as a deputy assistant chief (shift commander) with the Providence (RI) Fire Department. He is now the director of the Fire Service Division of the Legal & Liability Risk Management Institute and most recently was the director of the Public Fire Protection Division at the National Fire Protection Association. He is a practicing attorney, licensed in Rhode Island and Maine. He has written Legal Considerations for Fire and Emergency Services and Fire Officer's Legal Handbook and is a member of the Fire Engineering Fire Service Court. FRANK VISCUSO is a 20-year veteran of the fire service and a tour commander in the Kearny (NJ) Fire Department. He is a level 2 New Jersey fire instructor; co-creator of FireOpsOnline; and the author of three books, including Fireground Operational Guides (with Michael Terpak). He has developed more than 50 standard operating procedures and has served seven years as his department’s training officer. His articles appear in Fire Engineering. MICHAEL WALKER has been with the Oklahoma City Fire Department since 1990 and is a battalion chief. He has been a fire service instructor since 1995 and is a 2013 keynoter for FDIC. JIMM WALSH is a division chief with the Winter Park (FL) Fire Department and the owner of VentEnterSearch.com, a training Web site dedicated to truck company functions. He has a bachelor's degree in public administration from the University of Central Florida, has been credentialed as a Chief Fire Officer (CFO) by the Center for Public Safety Excellence, and is a graduate of the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer (EFO) Program. BRIAN WARD, a 19-year veteran of the fire service, is a captain with the Cherokee County (GA) Fire Department. He coordinates and conducts training in fireground management, special operations, and live fire workshops for the department. He also teaches with the Georgia Smoke Diver Program, where he assists with advanced fireground operations and firefighter survival training. DOUGLAS WATSON began his firefighting career in 1975 as a volunteer in Greenwich, Connecticut. After serving three years with the U.S. Army, he joined Palm Beach County Fire Rescue (FL) in 1981. In 2004, he was assigned to the Training & Safety Division and is a training officer. He teaches classes including hydraulics, apparatus and aerial operations, forcible entry, and Gauges Don’t Lie. He also is an adjunct instructor with Palm Beach State College and has an A.S. degree in fire science. JOE WEBB has been an FDIC flashover instructor for the past eight years. He is a lieutenant in Ladder/Tactical Rescue 14 for the Indianapolis (IN) Fire Department, where he has served for more than 33 years. He is a rescue specialist and a DRI rescue diver. He was a Federal Emergency Management Agency task force member from 1992 to 2001. He is a certified heavy rescue specialist and fire instructor 1. JEFF WELCH retired from the fire service after 28 years and holding positions up to and including chief. He served as a field instructor for the Illinois Fire Service Institute and continues to instruct in many disciplines. He has been involved with the FDIC H.O.T. programs since 2000

and has a bachelor’s degree in fire service from Southern Illinois University. He is a fire sprinkler inspector with SimplexGrinnell in Spokane, Washington. DEVON WELLS, a 21-year veteran of the fire service, is chief of Hood River (OR) Fire & EMS. He is the 2nd vice president of the International Society of Fire Service Instructors. JERRY WELLS is a battalion chief in the Lewisville (TX) Fire Department, where he has served for more than 26 years. He has worked at all levels from firefighter/paramedic to battalion chief. He has also served his home community as a volunteer firefighter and worked part time as an adjunct instructor for the Collin County Community College. He has a bachelor’s degree in emergency management from the University of North Texas. CARL WENDT is a 24-year veteran of the Newark (NJ) Fire Department, where he is a captain with Rescue Co. 1. He is also a 24-year member of the Boonton (NJ) Volunteer Fire Department, where he is chief and the FAST coordinator. He is a New Jersey level 2 instructor and teaches at the Passaic County Fire Academy. He has been an FDIC H.O.T. instructor since 2003. STEVE WHITE is a 22-year veteran of the Fishers (IN) Fire Department, where he is a battalion chief and oversees the technical rescue program. He is the team leader for the Hamilton County Technical Rescue Team; a member of the Indiana Fire Chief’s Association; co-chair of the Technical Rescue Section; and a member of the IDHS rescue certification task force, working to develop the state’s technical rescue certification program. He was the lead instructor for the 2007 and 2008 FDIC H.O.T. Heavy Truck Extrication program. As a lead instructor with Advanced Rescue Solutions, he has taught fire and rescue classes nationally for the past 17 years as an IFSAC-accredited instructor II/III. MIKE WILBUR has been a volunteer firefighter for more than 39 years and a career firefighter for 31 years with the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), where he was assigned to Ladder Company 56 for 15 years, eight as an apparatus operator. In 1995, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant and is recently retired from Ladder Company 27 in the Bronx. He served on the FDNY apparatus purchasing committee and has acquired state certification for the FDNY chauffeurs school. He is a contributing editor for fire service publications and has served on the IFSTA validation committees for the Apparatus Operator and Aerial Operator Manuals. He has served on the United States Fire Administration committees on Safe Operation of Fire Tankers and Emergency Vehicle Safety Initiative. NICK WILBUR has been a firefighter/EMT for the College Park (MD) Fire Department in Prince George’s County for more than four years and a volunteer at Howells Fire Department in New York for more than six years. He has also been a support instructor for emergency vehicle response for the past six years. DERRICK WILLIAMS is a 12 year veteran with the Indianapolis (IN) Fire Department and a lieutenant. He has a degree in fire science and is one of the shift training officers. He has instructed in engine and ladder company operations, RIT, and VES.

KOY WILSON is a tillerman assigned to Truck Company 3 with the Stockton (CA) Fire Department. He is a California State fire instructor and teaches engine and truck operations as well as rapid intervention and firefighter survival. He has 16 years in the fire service and was a founding member of the Stockton FOOLS. BRYAN WINZER is an 18-year veteran of the fire service and a nine-year member of the Fire Department of New York, assigned to Engine Company 231. He is also a firefighter with the Huntington Manor Volunteer Fire Department, where he previously served as captain and lieutenant of the Hook and Ladder Company. He has been an FDIC H.O.T instructor and lecturer and is a member of the development team for To Hell and Back, an educational program on the reality of burn injuries for firefighters. He was a member of the development team for the PowerPoint materials for Fire Engineering’s Handbook for Firefighter I and II. TIMOTHY WODICKA is a lieutenant on Ladder 126 in the Fire Department of New York, where he has served for more than 16 years. He also serves with the Bethpage (NY) Fire Department, where he has held the ranks of lieutenant and captain. He is a fire instructor for the Nassau County (NY) Fire Service Academy. ROB WRONSKI is assistant chief for the St. Andrews (SC) Fire Department and has been a firefighter/paramedic since 1991. His experience includes fire-based EMS, fire-based ALS and BLS first response, and county-based EMS. He is a SC paramedic instructor and in-service training officer and has served on the SC EMS Advisory Committee as the First Responder representative. He is a member of the Trident Technical College EMS Advisory Council, where he also is an adjunct instructor. He has a BS in fire science, a BS in healthcare administration, and an MBA in public administration. RICHARD WYLIE, a battalion chief in the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), has been in the fire service for 23 years and with FDNY since 1996. Previously, he served as a captain of Engine 290, a lieutenant of Ladder 136, and a firefighter in Squad 270. He has been an instructor at the Nassau County Fire Academy since 2003 and a member of the Bethpage (NY) Fire Department since 1993. JOEL YODER, a 32-year veteran of the fire service, is a battalion chief with the Rockdale County (GA) Fire Department who also serves as a station officer, the shift training officer, and a hazmat coordinator. He is a chief instructor for the Georgia Smoke Diver Program and coordinates and manages all live fire evolutions. He has been assisting the Georgia Fire Academy with the development and instruction of live fire training as an adjunct instructor since 1983. ANDREA ZAFERES has worked for 23 years in the field of water rescue/recovery and investigation. She is vice president of Lifeguard Systems and RIPTIDE, has been published more than 150 times, teaches worldwide, is a national award winner for contributions to diving safety, and has presented in more than 100 conferences. She has 18 years of EMS experience, has been working as a medicolegal death investigator for seven years, assists with aquatic death investigations nationally, serves as a forensic aquatic death expert witness, and performs research on aquatic death and homicidal drowning She is a NAUI course director, PADI master instructor,

and an ACUC master instructor trainer, teaching a variety of programs such as public safety diving, large-area search, and boat operational diving, surface ice rescue, field neurological evaluations, dive accident management, and aquatic death and homicidal drowning investigations. MATT ZIMPFER is a firefighter in the Fire Department of New York assigned to Ladder Company 27 in the Bronx. He is a 10-year veteran of the FDNY. Prior to that, Zimpfer worked for five years as a paramedic. A veteran of the United States Navy, he attended St. Josephs Paramedic School. He is an instructor for several private consulting companies, where he teaches firefighter survival, forcible entry, and truck company operations.
