01 Instructions for installation and use

1. Use

1.1 The SideXafe side protection system uses tensioning straps and is employed as a safeguard against falling per § 12 section 1 of DGUV regulation 38 "Construction work" on building edges. The SideXafe side protection system has been approved per DIN EN 13374 – A/2013.

1.2 The maximum distance of the attachment points shall not exceed 9 m.

1.3 Connection points are fixed supports or walls onto which approved parts for fastening the side protection system can be attached.

02 General2.1 The SideXafe side protection system shall be assembled and disassembled only by persons who

are familiar with these installation and usage instructions and who are familiar with the operating instructions for tensioning straps with ABS systems.

2.2 The assembly of the SideXafe side protection system shall be carried out only from safe working positions during the construction phase. Safe working positions can be ceiling slabs, lifting work platforms or mobile scaffolding, for example. Use of PPE to protect against falling may be required for the assembly.

2.3 The components must be checked for obvious defects by the user before each use.

03 Individual parts - Standard assembly

04 Assembly procedure4.1 The connection brackets (Art. 8129342) are attached to the components (e.g. concrete columns, steel

supports, brickwork walls, etc.). The brackets can be installed with three tensioning straps (Art. 8129683), with 6 Hilti wall/floor plugs, type HUS3-H 10 h_nom3 or with three high-tensile M12 10.9 screws. Other fastening options for the connection brackets, such as Halfen bolts on Halfen rails or wall/floor plugs for example, are also possible after checking and approval by the manufacturer of the SideXafe system.

4.1.1 The fastening of the connection bracket with tensioning straps shall be carried out ONLY with the intended and correctly labelled tensioning straps per (Art. 8129683). Tensioning straps from other areas shall NOT be used here. The bracket must generally be fastened with three tensioning straps. The tensioning straps are passed through the slot in the connection bracket (Fig. 1) for this and protected in the contact area of the connection bracket with the protective sleeving (Fig. 2). If the support pillar has sharp edges or corners, the tensioning strap should likewise be furnished with edge protection / protective sleeving. The webbing is now laid around the support pillar and fed through the slotted shaft in the ratchet. Then the webbing is tensioned (Fig. 3). In order to guarantee adequate safety, there should be at least 2 windings and max. 3 windings around the slotted shaft. The tensioning strap is then drawn tight. Avoid twists in the tensioning strap whilst doing so.

4.1.2 Fastening the connection bracket with wall/floor plugs shall be carried out only with Hilti wall/floor plugs, type HUS3-H 10 h_nom3. Other comparable wall/floor plug variants only permitted after consultation with and approval by the manufacturer! The bracket must generally be fastened with six wall/floor plugs.

The bracket should be used as a drilling template for this. The holes are marked and then drilled with a 10 mm diameter drill and to a depth of 95 mm. The drilled holes must be cleaned out afterwards. Then fasten the bracket with the six wall/floor plugs. Min. concrete grade: C 20/25, cracked. It is essential that the installation instructions for the wall/floor plugs are observed!

4.1.3 Attach the connection bracket (Art. 8129342) to the existing steel structure only with three screws (high-tensile screws M12 x ... 10.9). Caution: The fastening screws must always be at the same height as the hooks in order to guarantee stability (see Fig. E).

4.2 Now fit the three tensioning straps (Art. 8129682) between the two connection brackets. On one side, the end piece with the ratchet and on the other side the simple, long strap end. In doing so, attach the hooks of the tensioning strap into the openings provided. The openings are at heights of 200, 650 and 1100 mm above the top edge of the concrete ceiling slab so that the top edge of the strap lies at 225, 675 and 1125 mm above the top edge of the concrete ceiling slab respectively. The tensioning straps are now threaded through and pre-tensioned from the bottom (strap 1) to the top (strap 3) (see Fig. 4). They must be tensioned to the end value only in a second step, again starting from the bottom (strap 1). The tensioning strap can be tensioned over a length of max. 9.0 m. Please be careful here too to ensure that the straps are not twisted. Observe the operating instructions for tensioning straps with ABS systems when assembling and using the "SideXafe-fall protection system". Refer also to page 7 of these installation and usage instructions.

Caution: The tensioning straps shall not be tightened around corners as the stipulated tension cannot be applied in these situations.

If using two brackets on a support pillar, SpanSet-SliP protective sleeving must be used on each bracket.

4.4 The SideXafe side protection system must be checked by the respective user to ensure that it is in good condition every working day before use or after an extended interruption in the work. The check is carried out as a visual check taking particular care to look for cracks and heavy corrosion on all of the steel elements.

The discard criteria stipulated on page 11 of these installation and usage instructions apply to the tensioning straps and equipment.Components must be withdrawn from service if damage is discovered.Furthermore, the weekday checks must also check that there is adequate tension in the tensioning straps. The tension can be checked via the TFI incorporated on the straps (see page 8 of these instructions for this).

4.5 The tensioning straps are to be checked and documented by a qualified person each time they come back from the construction site, however at least once per year.Installation shall be carried out only by persons who have been specially trained and who have been examined per guideline 41 "working in areas where there is a risk of falling" from the trade associations.

4.6 It is not permitted to modify or add to the components of the "SideXafe side protection system".All repair works shall be carried out only in compliance with the measures stipulated by the manufacturer.

Cutting the tensioning straps or throwing components is not permitted.

Please note in particular:

The use of sharp-edged tools and components in conjunction with the tensioned straps can result in the tensioning straps being damaged.

If a person or object stumbles or falls against the "SideXafe side protection system" or any of the accessory parts, the components involved must be withdrawn from service immediately and submitted to the manufacturer for checking.

05 Using SideXafe ratchetsOnly a SpanSet pressure ratchet or a SpanSet pull ratchet with double slide for increased pre-tensioning force, with integrated pre-tensioning force indicator TFI, may be used with the SideXafe side protection system. It is only permitted to use undamaged systems with no defects evident. The side protection system must be furnished with an identification label whose lettering is clearly legible.

5.1 Construction of the tensioning strap system

The system is a two-part tensioning system, comprising the fixed end (FE) with coated webbing and triangular carabiner hook, the tensioning ratchet with integrated pre-tension measurement indicator TFI, and the loose end (LE) with coated webbing with triangular carabiner hook.

5.2 Fitting the SideXafe side protection system

5.2.4 Tensioning the system

Tighten until the desired pre-tension is achieved. There must be at least 2 windings, but no more than 3, on the slotted shaft of the tensioning ratchet. Tensioning ratchets with pre-tension indicators show the pre-tensioning force applied. There must be at least 1000 daN indicated on the TFI on all three straps.

8 9

In order to make the tensioning easier, an approved SpanSet lever extension can be attached to the tensioning lever and used for tightening the strap. Caution: Ratchet extensions such as pipes, timbers, etc. are forbidden!

5.2.5 Secure tensioning ratchet

After tightening pull the function slider and turn the lever of the tensioning ratchet far enough into the closed position that the slide can engage in the safety recess. Now the closed and locked tensioning ratchet will not jump out even with heavy vibrations.

Page 12: Instructions for installation and use SideXafe LEVEL · protection system can be attached. 02 General 2.1 The SideXafe side protection system shall be assembled and disassembled only

10

5.3 Disassembling the SideXafe side protection system

5.3.1 Loosening the tensioning strap

When releasing the tension, the SideXafe side protection system allows the pre-tensioning force to be released in small steps. To do so, move the lever of the tensioning ratchet to the loosening position. Moving the function lever back and forth releases the pre-tensioning force step by step. Moving the tensioning ratchet lever to the maximum position allows the slotted shaft to move freely and the tensioning strap can then be easily pulled out.

5.3.2 Loosening the tensioning ratchet

Pull the function slider and turn the tensioning ratchet lever ca. 180° to the end stop to let the slider latch into the last possible recess. Caution! All the pre-tensioning force will be released at once!
