1. All parts of the breech action will be kept perfectly clean.2. Rangoon oil only will be used for the above purpose ; the use of

cutting substances, such as emery cloth, &c., or of the buff stick, being strictly forbidden.

3. Care must be taken not to enlarge the chamber by cleaning ;the stick cleaning chamber, with wire gauze, or an oiled rag onlyshould be used for this purpose (a bright chamber not to be insistedupon).

•4. The bolt head cover in the Mark I* should not be removed, except for repair.

5. In caSe of miss-fires, the mainspring should be weighed fromcocking piece with tester trigger pull (pierced caps will cauSe themainspring to lose weight) ; light springs should be replaced.

6. The following springs can be tested by the tester trigger pull, and should weigh as follows :— -- _

7. ldvtraction.—The extracting cam in body and on bolt shouldwithdraw bolt from .08-in. to . 10-in. A rifle having the amount ofdraw will not fail to extract ; in case of failure to extract, thefollowing points should be examined :—Play between bolt and bolthead in the Mark 1*, play between extractor screw, and extractoraxis hole, and cam on bolt, and cam in body. if the wear shouldbe found to be excesSive, the components should be replaced.

8. Ejection of Empty Cartridges.—In fitting new ejector screws• see that the point of screw just touches the bolt in its passage, but

not sufficient to retard it.9. Fitting Striker.--In fitting a new striker, care must be taken

to adjust it to length, a gauge for this purpose is on end of strikerimplement ; the striker should be carefully rounded to the radiusin gauge striker point, as a long or badly rounded striker would belikely to cause pierced capS.

10. Fitting Platform and Spring to Magazine.—See that thespring stands in a line with platform in the Mark I*, and, whenspring and platform are assembled, in all pattern arms, well workthem in magazine until they raise the cartridges freely.

11. To increase or Decrease Weight of Pull-off —To reduce weightease bent of cocking piece with oilstone. To increase weightdeepen radius of bent.

12. To Fit . ew Bolt Head.—Ease front of bolt head if requiredto allow bolt to close over •064-in. gauge, but should not cloSe over -gauge .072-in.

13. To Reline Sight Slide.—The Rifle sight lino tool Is suitable• for this purpose (see directions page 36).

Page 9: Instructions for Armourers

8

N.E. --The oil used should be Rangoon oil for the actions, andrifle oil for the barrels of '303-in. arms. No other oil than thespecial rifle oil issued for the purpose is to be used for the bore of barrels. ThiS oil containS a proportion of cauStic soda, the alkalinecharacter of which causes it to neutralise any acid which may be inthe fouling, and generally to prevent rust, the oil should be wellshaken up before uSe.

To Clean the Barrel with the Pull-through.—Remove the bolt, oilthe gauze of the pull-through well with rifle oil, drop the -Weightthrough the barrel from the breech, and pull the gauze completelythrough, then insert in the loop nearest the gauze a piece of dryflannellette, 4-in. by 2-in., and draw it through the barrel as beforethe flannellette should never be pulled back when partly through,as it will probably jam. When the gauze of the pull-through, inconsequence of frequent use, ceases to fit the barrel lightly, narrowstrips of flannellette or paper may be inserted under each side toincrease its diameter. No larger piece of flannellette than 4-in. by2-in. should ever be used, and it may sometimes be reduced in widthto advantage. Water on no account should be used after firing with -cordite ammunition.

To Clear the Barrel when Pull-through becomes broken andjammed.--Screw the "plug clearing plain" on the "rod tool clear-ing .303-in. arms," and place it in the barrel at the end nearest thejammed flannellette ; compress the flannellette and cord as much aspossible_, then withdraw the rod and plug, unscrew the plug and screwon the bit spoon, pass this into the barrel and turn, presing firmlyagainst the jammed material, the spoon bit should be withdrawnafter about six turns, and the corkscrew bit inserted to withdrawthe cut material. Very much pressure should not be applied to thebit spoon, neither should it be turned too many times before with-drawing, as it only chokes when the spoon is filled, care should alsobe taken that all the material cut by the spoon bit is withdrawn bythe corkscrew bit before again using the spoon bit, this should becontinued until the corkscrew bit will withdraw the remaining cordand gauze.INSTRUCTIONS FOR STRIPPING FOR REPAIRS AND

list.—Remove wire laces with screw-driver, pull off locket andchape. .

2nd.—Re-block leather, soak the leather, to stiffen it in hotsolution of soda water (about half a pound of soda to one gallon ofwater) for about ten minutes, this will also soften and removeshellac from the inside so as to prevent the scabbard adhering tothe mandril in drying, care should be taken not to make the waterhotter than the hand can bear, otherwise the leather will bedestroyed.

3rd.—When the leather is softened place on gunmetal mandril(previously greased with mutton suet or Russian tallow), care being

taken to keep the seam straight and central. Wipe leather (on themandril) with a piece of linen rag from top to bottom to lay thesurface and tie the ends firmly on the mandril, to prevent shrinking.

4th.—Dry the leather by placing it in about 3-ft. distant from thefront of a good fire. The drying should be accomplished in aboutthree hours.5th.—Loosen the leather while warm by drawing it a little offmandril.

6th.—Coat the leather, when cold, with gum and ink. This mustbe done cold, and the leather kept away fromthe fire, otherwisethe gum will peel off.

7th.--When dry smooth off lightly with F.F. emery cloth.8th.—Coat with shellac and let dry. A small quantity of Shellac

should be poured down the seam inside to preserve the stitches.Re-assembling.

lst.--Place on chape after applying the necessary glue to theoutside, and stand to dry before lacing.

2nd.—When dry, fasten lace by clenching on mandril.3rd.—Place on locket by the same method.Note.—The laces should be made from iron wire No. 17, B.W.G.,

cut in lengths of 1-in.INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING IMPLEMENT ACTION

REPLACING COMPONENTS.

RIFLES AND CARBINES.

Adjustment in Loading Position.1. If the block be too high, the bearing surface at A (fig. 1) of

the lever may be depressed by means of a punch to the breadth ofthe corresponding surface on the tumbler. If an adjustment ofmore than '01 of an inch is required, a new lever should be fitted.

Page 25: Instructions for Armourers

Fin. 2,

2. Should the block be too low, an amount not to exceed•01-in.may be added to the bearing surface at A by carefully drawing outthe metal at that point ; but should more than •01-in. be required(which will rarely, if ever, be the case), a new lever should be fitted.

Adjustment in Firing Position.

1. When the block is in the firing position, should the strikerstrike the cap too high, an amount not exceeding •01-in. taken offthe bearing surface of the lever horns at B will be sufficient torectify the error.

2. Should the striker strike the cap too low, the horns of thelever may be drawn out between the lines indicated at D not toexceed •01-in., care being taken not to spread the horns or set themout of position at C.

Extractor.—When the block is at the loading position the pointA (fig. 2) should be just free from the under side of the block.

When the block is depressed to the lowest position it shouldbear on point B, holding the extractor firm ; and should the leverat E touch the guard so as to prevent the block doing this, theguard may be filed to allow the lever to be clear.

The point D should be on the guard when the extractor is at itslowest position ; if it will not bed down, the fault must be lookedfor on the head of the trigger spring screw ; if this stands too high,it should be filed flat.

Trigger.--In replacing a trigger, the nose must not be touched inmaking the pull-off, but the adjustment made by altering the angleof tumbler bent by scraping the face.

Trigger spring.—ln replacing a trigger spring, care must betaken that the head of the screw beds well down on the spring, andthat the point does not bear on the guard swivel screw.

Guard.--In replacing guard, it should be placed in the body andthe indicator fixed in position - notice that the guard drops freelyinto the body without side pressure ; if the extractor axis hole is

(5669)

Page 26: Instructions for Armourers

not fair in both guard and body, file the nib resting on front (dbody, if required, run in ¼-in. tap to regulate the hole, and put inaxis screw. See that the indicator is perfectly free to revolve.

Tumbler.—In replacing a tumbler, it should pass firmly on to,but not be driven hard upon the squares of the indicator ; it shouldalso work freely between the horns of the lever• Indicator.—Remarks same as upon tumbler. •

Lever. replacing, a lever, the bearings at point A (fig. 3)should be free when the lever is depressed, otherwise it preventsthe block from having its fell full.

The end of the lever must be set to drop freely into the levercatch block ; care must also be taken that the lever beds on its sentat the under side of socket end of body.

The levers issued with the spare parts are for long butts—theywill require setting for short butts—a slight blow with a mallet isall that is required to make them drop freely into the lever catchblock ; the levers for long butts ire issued in preference to leversfor short butts, as the adjustment required by the former to fit themto short butts is more simple than to adjust a lever for a short buttto a long butt.

Striker.—When replacing, care must be taken that the largerpart of the slot is downwards, and that the striker. is correct togauge for length and radius of point.

Examinatton of Strikers.--For this purpose the•064-in. gaugecartridge dummy will be used with the hole filled with soap or waxlevel with the base disc.

To test the condition of the point of the striker :—Load the riflewith the gauge cartridge dummy and fire. On withdrawing thedummy an impreSsion of the point of the striker will be found in thesoap should the striker be perfect. Should the striker make noimpression in the soap when the rifle is fixed, the point of strikermust be broken.

Page 27: Instructions for Armourers

Stock. —To replace a stock-butt the butt plate must be removed, the stock bolt unscrewed, and washer removed. Should the newstock not be drawn firmly home when the bolt is screwed up, asecond washer must be put on. Should the point of the stock boltprotrude on the inside of the body, it will interfere with the fullplay of the block when extracting ; additional washers may requireto be added in a soft sap stock to prevent this.

in replacing the fore-end of the rifle, M.-E., Mark I, and carbineS,A.C.M.-M., Mark III, and M.-E., Mark I, care must be taken thatthe stock does not spring from the muzzle, but drops fair home, orit will affect the shooting of the barrel.

Easing .springs. —The action being open, place the thumb on thethumb seat, and the forefinger on the trigger, the remaining fingersunder the guard, press the trigger firmly without touching the lever, and when the lever is closed* secure it in the catch by clasping thebow of the lever and small of the butt with the right hand.

N.B.—"Springs must never be eased when a cartridge is in thechamber."

To adjust "pull-off"—Assemble the guard with tumbler, lever, and assembled block in action—regulate the "pull-off" by the bentfrom 2 to 4 lb., without the trigger spring. Insert trigger springand bring the " pull-off" to the regulation weight (6 -to 8 lb.) byfiling the underside of spring if too heavy, or putting in a strongerspring if too light, particular care being taken to see that the springis screwed hard and firmly down by the screw.

(ln replacing a trigger spring, the " pull-off " must be adjustedin the manner above described.)

Gauge, action.—The "gauge, action" is issued to armourer- serjeants and others solely for the purpose of testing the componentor components of any rifle which may appear to be defective in itsaction. For this purpose the component parts of the action of therifle may be assembled in the "gauge, action," when the working canbe clearly seen and the defective part (if any) noticed.

Should there be any doubt as to which component is in fault, itcan be set at rest by substituting for the suspected component thecorresponding one from the "gauge, action," which, being of correctform, should work well if the other components are in good order.Great care should be taken in using the "gauge, action" or any ofits components not to strain or distort them.

Armourer-serjeants are strictly cautioned not to grip any carbinein the vice without protecting the back-sight and bed by means ofa leather-covered clam.

Spare parts.--When a spare part which bears a date of manufacture is placed in a rifle or carbine, the date on which this sparepart is so used is to be placed by the armourer. near the S, whichwill be found on the spare part.

* If the lever should fail to close on pulling the trigger, this indicates that Oleaction is not in good order, and the lever must be then pressed home by the righthand.

DIRECTIONS FOR RENEWING LINES ON SIGHT SLIDESAND CAPS, ALL RIFLES AND CARBINES.

Fit the sight-line tool over the slide andleaf, and press it up to the cap, then with aScriber, having a point of the proper width,re-mark the wind gauge and centre lines onthe Slide and cap, as shown by the dottedline a a in sketch. Reverse the tool andre-mark the opposite wind-gauge line, andtrace over the centre lines A A to prove thatthey are in the centre, and there is a slightvariation in the width of the leaves.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING TRIGGERTESTERS.

RIFLES AND CARBINES.

1. The " pull-off " of military Small armSis regulated so aS to require a mean weightof about 7 lb. to be applied to the finger-pieceof the trigger, in order to release the triggernose from the bent in the tumbler ; thisresult is obtained only when the componentsof the action, including the trigger, are per-fectly clean and freed from dried-up oil orother matter causing obstruction to the freeworking of the various parts.

In order, therefore, to obtain trustworthyindications of the weight of the "the armourer-serjeant will thoroughly ex-amine the actions of the arms which are tobe tested, and clean and oil such as he findsrequire to be so treated, especial attentionbeing_paid to the following points--viz., thatthe block does not jam against the end ofthe breech when it is being closed, that thetrigger screw is screwed well home.

2. Should the action, after having beenthoroughly examined, cleaned, and oiled, befound to pull-off - either light or heavy (i.e.,below 6 lb. or over 8 lb.), it may be easilyregulated, according to instructions foradjusting " pull•off " (page 35).

3. In weighing the " the 'arm should be rigidly held(if possible, in a vice) in a horizontal position, the indicator sideuppermost. The trigger tester should be held in a line diagonallyacross the grip, and immediately over the lower corner of the body

Browning Mixture.

One quart is sufficient for browning 100 arms.

Acid, nitric, .... 6½ „Steel, tincture of .... 13 „Wine, spirits of, methylated 5 „Rain water 1 gallon.

The ingredients required for the browning mixture will be mixedtogether by the armourer-serjeant directly they are drawn fromstore. Officers Commanding and Ordnance Store Officers willcaution armourer-serjeants against keeping the ingredients packedin separate bottles, as danger from fire is likely to arise from thenitric acid if it is Spilt before being mixed with the otheringredients.

If the armourer-serjeant has a larger quantity of ingredientsthan he actually requires for the arms he has to brown, lie will atonce return the surplus into the Quarter-Master's store.

1st Day.

1. Boil the barrels in a strong solution of soda and water, about14 lb. of Soda to the gallon, for about 20 minutes to remove thegrease.

2. Wash them in clean warm water and wipe them with a cleanrag.

3. Dip them in hot water, wipe them clean, and coat themwhilst hot with the mixture, rubbing the Same well in.

4. Let them stand in a dry place for three or four hours, thencoat them whilst cold with the mixture, and stand them in thedrying-room for the night. Heat about 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

2nd Day.

1. Boil the barrels for 20 minutes in clean water, and, whencold, scratch off with wire card, and wipe clean.

2. Coat them with the mixture whilst cold, and stand themin drying-room half-an-hour, or until dry.

3. Then boil in the same water as before for 20) minutes, rubthem clean with a wet cloth, and coat them whilst hot with themixture.

4. Let them stand in a dry place for two hours, then coat themwhilst cold with the mixture, and stand them in the drying roomhalf-an-hour, or until dry.

5. Then boil for 20 minutes, wipe clean with wet cloths, andcoat them whilst hot with the mixture.

6. Stand them in a dry place for two hours, then coat themwhilst cold with the mixture, and let them stand in the drying-

room half-an-hour.7. Boil for 20 minutes, rub with wet cloths, and coat them whilst

hot with the mixture, stand them in the drying-room for the night,

3rd. Day.1. Scratch off with wire card, wipe them clean, and coat them

whilst cold with the mixture.2. Let them stand in the drying-room about half-an-hour, then

boil them for about half-an-hour, rub clean with wet cloths, scratchlightly, and, when cold, oil them.

NOTE:—The barrels will generally be dry in the time Mentioned ;but as the atmosphere has a great effect upon the acids, of whichthe browning mixture is composed, this will net invariably be thecase. It can easily be ascertained whether the barrels are dry ornot by applying the steel scratch card, when, if dry, the rust willfly off quickly, but if not dry, the rust will adhere firmly, and thebarrel will have a streaky appearance.

Care should be taken that the same water is not used in boilingtwo successive sets of barrels.

BAYONETS.

1st Day.

Boil the bayonets in strong solution of soda and water longenough to remove the grease, then wash them in clean warm water, dip them in hot water, and coat the sockets whilSt hot with themixture, rub the same well in, let them stand three or four hours, then whilst cold coat them with the mixture, and put them in thedrying-room for the night.

2nd Day.Boil for 20 minutes in clean water, let them stand in a dry place

to cool them, scratch them off with wire card, then dip the socketsin hot water, and coat them whilst hot with the mixture ; let themstand an hour in a dry place, then coat them whilst cold with themixture. and, when dry, boil them about 20 minutes, wipe themclean with wet clothS, and coat them whilst hot with the mixture ;let them stand in a dry place an hour, then coat them whilst coldwith the mixture, and, when dry, boil them about 20 minutes, thenwipe them clean, scratch lightly, and oil them.

Instructions for the Care, Preservation, and Exami-nation of Machine Guns, Carriages, Cavalry,Infantry, Parapet, and Cone Mountings.

The barrels, in situations where they are exposed to a moistatmosphere, should be examined and wiped inSide with an oiledrag daily.

In other caSes thiS will be done as frequently as circumstancesmay require, according to the discretion of the officer in charge ofthe gun.

It is very important that the barrel chambers Should be keptclean ; they should be oiled immediately the firing ceaSes.

N. B.—If, however, cordite ammunition is fired from anymachine guns,. the rifling of the barrels should be oiled immediatelyafter Jirilig with the special oil known as "rifle oil" to preventerosion; the barrels should be examined daily, thoroughly cleaned,

and then left with a coating of rifle oil. The Lille oil should bewell shaken before use.

When cleaning the guns turpentine or oil is to be used, Rangoonmixed with paraffin for preference ; on no account may emerycloth or any cutting substance be employed. In oiling beforeaSSembling, use Rangoon oil. It is a good plan before assemblingthe guns to try the parts in their places separately to see that theywork freely.

When guns are returned to store, packed for transmission, orstowed away in any place where they cannot be readily examined, the barrels and unpainted parts should be coated with the followingmixture :-

Wax, bees' .... .... 4 lb.Paraffin, hard, yellow scale 4 „yellowChalk, whiteOil Rangoon.... .... 6 quarts.

The mixture is to be made hot, and a piece of flannel dippedin it with which the exterior parts will be dabbed. To coat theinside of barrels, draw a bunch of lamp cotton well saturated withthe mixture through from both ends ; the lamp cotton is to beattached to a piece of twisted copper wire.

The following course will be pursued after practice :—The locks will be taken out, the extractors, firing pins, hammers,

'and springs will be examined to ascertain that they are notbroken.

It will not be neceSsary to strip the locks for this.An entry showing all rounds of ball ammunition fired will also

be made on the inside sheet of the" Memorandum of Examination'`of the gun.

Replace all defective parts in the guns with new parts takenfrom the Spare part box belonging to the gun.

Every machine gan will be thoroughly examined every month, and left in a properly lubricated and serviceable condition ; thefollowing parts should therefore be removed and properly cleanedand re-oiled or greased.

" Memorandum of Examination " iS always to be packed in thecheSt with the gum.

The lockS of Maxim, Gardner and Gatling guns, and the actionand breech blocks of Nordenfelt guns should be stripped, ex-amined, re-oiled, and assembled every six months, or oftener, ifnecessary.

Special dummy cartridges, aS described in paragraph 6489, LiStof Changes in War Material, will be supplied for the use ofarmoureis for testing the hoppers, beltS, cartridge feeders, cartridgecarriers, &c., of the various machine gunS in their charge to enSurethese appurtenances and components being correct and free fromobstruction previous to firing.

Twelve cartridges will be iSSued to each armourer-serjeant foreach nature of machine gun which he haS in hiS charge. They arenot to be used for drill purposes.

The carriages or mountings must be overhauled every month, and all parts stripped and properly cleaned and re-oiled or greased.See that all taper pins and fixing screws are tight, all adjustingscrewS and nuts are properly adjuSted, and the carriage ormounting left in a properly lubricated and Serviceable condition.

Before travelling the wheels must be removed, the pipe boxesand axletree armS thoroughly cleaned and fresh grease applied.

Defects or damages Should be reported directly they are diS-covered, so that such defectS or damages may be remedied withoutdelay.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR ARMOLT-RERS IN STRIPPING AND ASSEMBLING• THE GUN.

• To dismount the shield—Drive out the taper pins from shieldholders and lift out the shield.

To remove locks. —See that the safety bar is in firing poSition, open the cover and ttirn the crank until the right hand crank pin isat the top ; when in this position the fore-end of the plunger of theright hand lock will be about 2-in. from the barrel ; take holdof the plunger and raise it, at the same time moving the crankslightly ; the lock will now come away ; turn the left hand crankpin to the top and take out the left hand lock.

To remove the cartridge earrier.—Lift up the right hand hood andpuSh out the guide pinS, tarn the crank until the cartridge carrieris to the left, then with the fingers inserted through the dischargeports, lift out the cartridge carrier. It will be found easier toremote the cartridge carrier if both hoods are first taken from thecasing, but with a little practice it may be removed without.

To remove the safety bar.—Lift up the right hand hood and drawthe Safety bar out.

To remove the ecank.—Place the flat part of the Spanner in theslot of. the left axis pin, letting the cross-piece or Screw-driver endrest upon the frame to the rear ; take hold of the crank handle andgive a Smart backward turn, this will loosen the left axiS pin ; donot take it quite out until the right axis pin is loosened, which isaccomplished by placing a piece of hard wood between the crank andrear end of breech casing, and turning the crank handle backward ;both axis pins being removed the crank may be lifted

Page 39: Instructions for Armourers

47

To lein0C,3 the lnotreh.—Remove the hoods and driVe e barrelfixing pin out of casing ; drive the fixing pin upwards from thefore-sight, take off the fore-sight and front disc and draw thebarrel forward.

N.B.—All pins without liead are to be driven out .from, the left.TO strip a lock.—CompresS the spring by means of the hammer,

jplace the j aws of the spanner over the spring as now as possible, thiswill keep the Spring compressed ; when the hammer is released thespring may be taken from the lock ; remove fixing and axis pin,and take out the hammer, drive out the fixing pin from the plunger, and draw off the butt ; take out the firing pin, - drive out theextractor pin and remove the extractor. If it is necessary to removethe spring from the spanner, compress the spring in a vice, orbetween the frame and cover of the gun, when it will be left free ofthe spanner. Care must be taken to hold the open end of the springin the vice and not the turned end.

To strip the tangent sight.--Drivé out the taper pin and take offthe milled head, take out fixing screws and remove the bracket, takeout pinion, then remove the sight and spring ;° when it iS necessaryto take out the stem, the stem spring must be forced back by pressinga piece of wire through the hole in - the slide, the stem may then bewithdrawn.

To assemble gen.—Reverse the above operations, taking care inreplacing the locks to have the crank pins in the same position asdirected for stripping, and that the end of the hammer is under thecrank and not in the opening in the dise. See that the locks areplaced right and left, as marked.

To strip cone mounting.—Remove elevating gear as follows : slackout check mit and Screw out pivot screws, take out fixing screw andremove strap and screw, the screws may then be taken out fromgunmetal nut.

Remove fixing pins, keeper plates and fixing Screws for front andback clips. Drive down locking bolt and release worm wheel fromcone by a blow with piece of copper or hard wood, upon the lugs onthe cone provided for that purpose. Remove adjusting nuts andcollar (traversing gear), drive out taper pin and remove hand wheel ;remove bearing nut (Gib key), worm and spindle, crosshead andworm wheel ; remove cap fixing screws, and drive down cap ; driveout steel bush(from inside of cone), and remove locking bolt.

To assemble mounting.—.Reverse above operations, and see thatthe arrows marked on the threads coincide.

.31issfires may be cauSed by a weak lock spring. The weight ofthe spring may be tested with a wire and Spring balance ; it shouldrequire a pressure of not less than 17 lb. to press the point of thefiring pin back slightly. Missfires may alSo occur if oil be allowedto corrode round the firing pin, or if the point of the firing pin is"flat.

.,:-Von-extraction.— Should any cases of non-extraction occur owingto the extractor cutting through the head of the cartridge, drawback the lock and drive out the empty case with the cleaning rodinserted from the muzzle. Sometimes, owing to a hang-fire, thehead of the cartridge case may be blown off, leaving the cylindrical:

See that centre pin of plug is fully back, push threaded part ofplug into the chamber until the shoulder bears againSt the breechend of the barrel.

Force the lock plunger forward against the centre pin, at thiasame time giving the handle of the plug a slight rocking motion.Draw hack the lock plunger and depress the handle of the plug ;thiS will loosen the case, which may then be drawn out.

Tap the centre pin back and remove the cartridge caSe from theplug, clean all fouling from the thread, and the plug is ready for useagain.

Jams —A jam may occur after a hang-fire by the next cartridgebeing driven forward into tire chamber which is already occupied bythe cylindrical part of the previous cartridge case. When thishappens, cut off the supply of cartridges and remove the feeder, openthe cover, turn back the crank handle and remove any cartridgesfrom the carrier, take out the lock and drive back the jammedcartridge with the cleaning rod, then use the clearing plug accordingto inStructions.

To replace a barrel.—The spare barrel iS interchangeable asregards diameter ; should the fixing pin be found difficult to enter, the groove in the barrel may be eased away with a round file untilthe pin goes home ; copy the chamfer on the breech end of thebarrel from the old one.

N.B.—When the gun is not loaded, the crank handle must not beturned until the Safety bar is placed at "safe" position, nor withthe cover open ; neglect of thiS will cause serious damage to thechamber.

After firing, examine the cartridge feeder, cartridge carrier andbarrels, to see that no live cartridges have been left in themechanists.

To strip a lock.—CompreSs the Spring by means of the hammer ;place the jaws of the spanner over the spring as low as posSible, thiS will keep the spring compressed ; when the hammer isreleased, the spring may be taken from the lock ; take out thehammer, drive out the fixing pins from the plunger, and draw offthe butt ; take out the firing pin ; drive out the fixing pin, andremove extractor. If it is necessary to remove the spring from theSpanner, compress the spring in a vice, or between the frame andcover of gun, when it will be left free of the spanner.

To assemble gitn.—Reverse the above operations, taking care inreplacing the locks to have the crank pins in same position asdirected for stripping, and see that when inserting the locks theend of the hammer is under the crank and not in the opening in thedisc.

To replace a barrel.—The spare barrel is interchangeable asregards diameter; shOuld the fixing screw be found dib?ult to enter,

the groove in the barrel may be eased away with a round file untilthe screw goes home.

To strip cone mounting.—Remove elevating gear aS followS, slackout check nut and screw out pivot screws, take out fixing screw andremove strap and shoe, the screws may then be taken out fromgunmetal nut.

Remove fixing pins, keeper plates, and fixing screws for frontand back clipS. Drive down locking bolt and release worm-wheelfrom cone by a blow, with a piece of copper or hard wood, upon thelugs on the cone provided for that purpose. Remove adjustingnuts and collar (traversing gear), drive out taper pin and removehand-wheel ; remove bearing nut (with Gib key), worm and spindlecroSs-head and worm-wheel ; remove cap fixing screws, and drivedown cap, drive out steel bush (from inSide of cone), and removelocking bolt.

To assemble cone mounting.—ReverSe above operations, and seethat the arrows marked on the threads coincide.

Failures likely to occur.Non-extraction. —Should any cases of non-extraction occur owing

to.the extractor riSing over the cartridge head during the backwardmovement of the lock, the feed valve must be adjusted to bear uponthe extractor ; to do this, the adjusting screw in the right end ofthe lever must be drawn out slightly and fixed with the set screw. In the event of an extractor cutting through the head of thecartridge, draw back the lock and drive out the empty case withthe cleaning rod inserted from the muzzle. Sometimes, owing to ahang-fire, the head of the cartridge case may be blown off, leaving •the cylindrical part in the chamber ; in this case introduce theclearing plug, Mark II or III, as follows :—Open the cover anddraw back the lock plungers.

See that centre pin of plug is fully back, push threaded part ofplu into the chamber until the shoulder bears against the breechend of the barrel.

Force the lock plunger forward against the centre pin, at thesame time giving the handle of the plug a slight rocking motion.Draw back the lock plunger and depress the handle of the plug ;thiS will looSen the caSe, which may then be drawn out.

Tap the centre pin back and remove the cartridge case from theplug. Clean all fouling from the thread and the plug is ready foruSe again.

Aiissjires may be caused by a weak lock spring ; the weight ofthe spring may be tested with a wire and Spring. balance ; it shouldrequire a pressure not less than 10 lb. to preSs the point of thefiring pin back slightly. Missfires may also occur if oil be allowedto corrode round the firing pin, or if the point of the firing pin isflat.

jums.—tl jam may occur after a hang-fire by the next cartridgebeing driven forward into the chamber, which is already occupiedby the cylindrical part of the previous cartridge case. When thiShappens, cut off the Supply of cartridges and remove the feeder, open the cover, turn back the crank handle and remove any

Page 43: Instructions for Armourers

51

cartridges from the carrier, take out the lock and drive back thejammed cartridge with the cleaning rod, then use the clearing plugaccording to instructions.

N.B.—When the gun is not loaded, the crank handle must not beturned until the safety bar is placed at " safe " position ; nor withthe cover open, neglect of this will cause serious damage to thechambers.

After firing, examine the cartridge feeder, cartridge carrier, and barrelS, to see that no live cartridges have been left in themechanism.

GAMING GUNS, 0 .45-IN. AND 0 .65-IN.

1.—Directions for taking the ne to pieces.1. To remove the lock.—Turn the gun until No. 8 on the rear disc

is opposite an arrow head, which will be found on the hopper. Turnthe lock extractor to the right, against the stop, withdraw with theleft hand, whilst the crank iS moved slightly to and fro with theright ; the lock No. 1 will now come from the gun with the extractor.Reinsert the extractor and bring No. 9 oppoSite the arrow head, andrepeat the operation until all the locks are out. In 0 .45-in. guns itwill be necessary, after the extractor has been withdrawn about 2-in.,to turn it a little to the left, in order that the collar may clear thecascable button, a part of the collar being cut away for the purpose. In 0 . 65-in. guns, to bring away No. 1 lock, set No. 9 opposite arrowhead ; and to bring away No. 2 lock, set No. 10 opposite arrow head.

2. Take out the lock extractor and unscrew the cascable plate (atap with mallet on the end of the wrench will assist).

3. Drive the taper pinS out of the hexagon nut and the revolvingworm, unscrew the nuts, hexagon and fly : remove the traversingworm, or cam, and cones, and withdraw the crank and the revolvingspindle ; drive the split pin out of the worm-wheel, and remove withthe Screw clamp.

4. See that the gun is supported by the frame only, not by thebreach casing. Take out the casing Screws, and remove the coverand spring of cocking arrangement. Turn back the hopper.

5. Place the gunmetal bridge acroSS the frame of the gun alittle in front of the pivot block, pasS the brass band under thebarrels and hook on to the iron bridge, push the assembling restback as far as it will go and by turning the nut take the weight offthe barrels, &c. ; the breech casing may now be drawn off.

6. Drive out the taper pin, remove the rear guide nut, by turn-ing the nut to the tight (left-handed thread) with the gib key, whilst holding the lock cylinder with another. The lock cylinderand the cartridge carrier can now be drawn off the shaft.

7. To remove the barrels front the frame (if necessary).—Draw theshaft and barrels back a little, slack out the assembling rest, andrest the rear disc on the back edge of the pivot block. Place twopieces of copper rod in the top barrels (the copper must be as nearthe size of the bore as possible) to stand out about 6-in. The rear

end of the main -shaft will be held by one man, whilst another•,having hold of the copper rods, moves the barrels a few inchesback ; they will now be clear of the frame. in 0•65-in. arms, instead of using the copper rods, pass a sling between the frameand under the barrelS near the fore disc, letting two men lift witha handspike passed through the sling.

8. To remove the main shaft from the barrels.—Support the barrelsin wooden V blockS, just behind the fore disc, and in front ofthe rear disc ; drive the shaft out from the rear end with a baulkof timber, having a man to steady the fore-end of shaft and frontdisc as it Laves the barrels.

9. To strip a lock. —Take out the fixing screws, remove theextractor and unScrew the butt ; draw the spiral Spring through theend, and the hammer and firing pin through the slot in the plunger.

II.—Directions for putting the Gun together.

10. Screw the barrels into the rear disc, until the extractor slotsin each coincide, place securing ring into position. Fix the frontdiSc on the main shaft, pasS the shaft through the main disc andfore disc over barrels ; drive into position with baulk of timber.

11. Slide the cartridge carrier (with steady pin) on the shaft, then the lock cylinder, lastly screw on the rear guide nut until aline at the bottom of one of the grooves corresponds with a similarline on the lock cylinder ; drive the taper pin in rear guide nut.

12. Place the bearing plate and collar in bearing at the fore-endof the frame; insert the fore-end of shaft allowing the rear disc torest upon the back edge of the pivot block, whilst the assemblingrest is adjusted to take the weight.

13. Place the cocking arrangement in the breech casing, slide onthe breech casing, raising or lowering the shaft (by means of theassembling reSt) to suit the hole in the disc inSide the caSing ; puton the cover and spring for the cocking arrangement, and screw inthe casing screws ; drive on the worm-wheel and fix split pill.

14. Pass the crank Shaft through the hole in casing, put on thecollar, then, holding the revolving worm in position, push the shaftthrough to its place ; drive in the pin of the revolving worm, andscrew the nut on end. (In 0 .65-in. gunS there are two plain taperpinS in the revolving worm.)

15. Put the traversing gear on the crank shaft in the followingorder :—Cone with large hole, traversing worm or cam, cone witlismall hole, fly nut, and'hexagon nut ; drive in the taper pin.

16. Screw on the taStable plate until a notch upon it correspondswith a similar one on the top of the breech casing. Turn the gununtil No. 8 on the rear disc coincides with the arrow head (if a0 .65-in. gun let No. 1 coincide).

17. Insert No. 1 lock, push it up to its place with the lockextractor ; turn the gun until No. 9 and the arrow head coincide, withdraw the lock extractor ; insert No. 2 lock, and continue in thesame order.

Leave the lock extractor in the gun.

18. To ensure the free working of the gun, and at the same timeto guard against missfires, a certain amount of lateral freedommuSt be given to the main shaft.

19. Insert a dummy cartridge, or an empty cartridge case in thechamber of one of the barrels ; turn the gun round until this barrelis in firing position, set the barrels up to this by screwing in theadjusting screw, care being taken not to force them up, merelyfeel the pressure ; now unscrew -16-th of a turn, or revolution, andlock in position by the check nut. In chooSing a cartridge case, seethat head is in good condition, and that the body fits loosely in thechamber, otherwise some difficulty will be experienced in feelingwhen it is home in the cartridge-head recess. The adjusting screwwill he found by taking off the gunmetal cover on front of frame

IV.—Cartridge Cases, non-extracting.

20. The following points should. be looked to in the event of non-extraction :—That the extractor is not broken or worn to an obtuseangle at the hook ; that the extractor slot in barrel is clean andcoincides with slot in rear disc ; that when extractor is pushed backas far as it will go, there is sufficient distance between the hook andthe fore-end of lock. ThiS may be determined by drawing back thefiring pin and placing a cartridge case on the fore-end of the lock ;the hook should now be at least 0 -02-in. from the front edge of thecartridge-head diSc. Sometimes, owing to a hang-fire, the head ofthe cartridge case may be blown off, leaving the cylindrical part inthe chamber. In 0.45-in. guns introduce the clearing plug, Mark IIor III, as follows :—Open the hopper and draw back the lockplungers, see that central pin of plug iS fully back, push threadedpart of plug into the chamber until the shoulder bears against thebreech end of barrel, insert an empty cartridge case between thelock, plunger and centre pin when forcing the plunger forward toexpand the plug, at the same time give the handle a slight rockingmotion. Draw back the lock plunger and depress the handle ofthe plug ; this will loosen the case, which may then be drawn out.

Tap the centre pin back and remove the cartridge case from theplug, clean all fouling from the thread, and the plug is ready foruSe again.

V.—Mi8sfires,

21. In practice, should missfires occur, the gun should be atonce teSted to see that there is not too much lateral play in themain shaft.

VI.—Instructions for replacing a Barrel in Gutting Gun.

GUN, GATLING, 045-1N., ACCLES PEED.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR ARMOUREUS IN STRIPPING AND ASSEMBLING. THE GUN.

Place the gun horizontally on a bench, or its own mounting. When on the mounting, care should be taken that all the clamps aretight. .

Take out the hopper-joint pin, and remove the hopper.Remove locks.—Take out the rear plug, turn the gun until a

mark on the disc coincides with a mark on the casing in the hopperopening, this will bring the lock in a line with the hopper opening.Withdraw the lock, and repeat the operation until all the locks areremoved.

Remove the adjusting nut and ring by holding back the springcatch, at the same time unscrew the nut.

Turn the safety cam to firing point, and pull it from the gun, atthe same time give it a half turn to the right until it is clear of thecocking piece, where it will remain. When the safety cam is set at" safe," it must be pulled from the gun in order to turn freely.

To remove the cascable, pull gun the chain on the slidingcover, at the same time ;tide it to the right. Withdraw thelocking pin, Turn the cascable to the left until it stops, and thenwithdraw it.

It is not necessary to remove the crank spindle, worm and ,wheel.

Draw out the cam to the rear, taking care that the safety cam isdrawn out of the cocking piece, or the cam cannot be moved.

Lift out the cartridge guide.Push the barrels forward until the pin in the front carrying the

disc comes into view, drive it out, and take off the disc, then with-draw the barrels, main shaft, &c., out at the rear end of the guncasing.

To remove the barrels.—Drive out the pins from the discs. Takeoff discs and cartridge carrier. Tie a piece of rope round the barrelsat the breech, and remove the locking disc, the barrels are then free.lu putting the barrels together, lie the loc1;:ino , disc on a flat surface, and place the barrels in position (upright). When they are all setin the locking disc, slide the inner disc down betWeen them, takingcare that the right side is up, and the feather grooves in lire.Place the diSc in position on the muzzle. Lie the barrels down, and put the main shaft in position.

To strip a lock. —Press the hook end of the extractor -away fromthe lock until the small stud is clear of the slot, then pull itforward.

Take out the small screw at the rear end, and withdraw thefiring pin. Take off the split cellar over the narrow part of thefiring pin, and remove the spring and bush.

Assembling.—Reverse the above operations, drive all pins hometight. In pushing the cascable along the main shaft, the featherway of the worm-wheel should be kept in line with the feather onthe main shaft. The worm-wheel must always be put ii its placebefore the cascable is put in position,

Page 48: Instructions for Armourers

The lucks can be inserted or removed from the sun at any timeby bringing the marks in line on the locking disc and gun casing atthe hopper opening. The hopper must be open, in order to see themarks.

Adjustment.--To adjust the gun, keep the hopper up, and pressthe barrels to the rear, screw up the adjusting nut as tight aspossible, then unscrew it until the mark on the nut coincides withline on the driving ring. If the gun works hard in firing, the nutcan be set back one or two notches.

gisslires may be caused by a weak lock spring, or if oil is allowedto corrode round the firing pin, or if the point of the firing pin isflat.

Non-extraction may be cauSed by a weak extractor, an extractorthat is worn. at the hook, or by the extractor way in the barrel beingdirty, and thus preventing the extractor going down in front of thecartridge head.

.Tams.—A jam may occur after a hang-fire by the next cartridgebeimg driven forward into the chamber which is already occupiedby the cylindrical part of the previous cartridge case. When thishappens, remove the feed caSe, and lift up the hopper, turn crankhandle until the cause of the jam is found, the jammed cartridgecase may now be removed by means of the cleaning rod andejector, or by removing the lock that belongs to the barrel wherethe jam has occurred, the firing may then go on with nine barrels.

After firing, examino the feed case, h cartridge carrier, andbarrels, to see no live cartridges have been left in the mechanism.

GUN, NORDENFELT, 2-BARREL, 1-IN.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR ARMOURERS IN STRIPPING AND ASSEMBLINGTHE GUN.

Turn back the cover ; draw back the hand lever until the actionblock is the same distance from each side of the frame, then withthe fingerS of the left hand inserted in the trigger comb recess, andthe thumb and fingers of the right hand graSping the trigger comb, lift the action block straight out.

Draw the breech block fully back, and lift out the cartridgecarrier. Lift out the breech block. Lift out the action lever, andthe hand lever can be taken from the gun.

go strip action block.—Drive out the spring bar with a piece ofhard wood and hammer ; draw out the springs and hammers, pushout the trigger comb spring, and take out the trigger comb.

The firing pin may be pushed out of the breech block with thebraSs wire drift.

Assembling. —Reverse the above operationS, taking care to putall the parts in square, and not to use any force.

The barrels are not to be taken from the gun, unless for thepurpose of re-browning, or Some cause, rendering their removali4bso1utely necessary.

Page 49: Instructions for Armourers

To strip cone mounting.-17nserew set screw, and remove pivot-bolt nut. -

To strip elevating gem .—Remove. elevating nut, take out fixingscrew, and remove strap and shoe, remove outer screw and hand-wheel, drive out taper pin, and remove collar and inner Screw.

To strip traversing gear.—Drive out taper pin, and remove collar, turn traversing hand wheel until the arrow on worm spindlecoincideS with the featherway in crosshead, drive out worm spindleand remove worm, lift off croSshead.

NOTE. The gun and crosshead, with elevating and traversinggears attached, may be lifted away from the cone by removing thepivot-bolt nut, and turning the traversing hand-wheel until the flatedge at the rear of crosShead coincides with a line on the cone.

To assemble mounting.—Reverse the above operationS, takingcare that the arrows on nut and elevating screws coincide.

Instructions for fitting shoulder piece.---Remove traversing andelevating measure the distance from the bottom edge of the.cover (when down) to the centre of bosS of elevating pin, mark thisdistance oil from the step of clearance on shoulder piece for edge ofcover, measure the distance from front end of cover to centre of bossof elevating pin, mark off on shoulder piece thiS distance from theback edge of upper clip piece ; where the two lines intersect will bethe centre of hole required.

The size of hole will be the diameter of elevating pin bosS ouframe. The inner edge of hole to be rounded sufficiently to clearthe curve at the root of elevating pin boss on frame, so that theshoulder piece will lie close against the side of the frame.

The brake strap requires a flat filed on it, half an inch wide, atthe point of contact with the Shoulder piece.

The hole in the shoulder piece having been bored according tothe above instructionS, place the shoulder piece upon the gun, replace the elevating gear, seeing that the boss of elevating nutenters the . hole in shoulder piece, screw the elevating joint pinfirmly home. See that the brake strap is not bearing too hard onthe shoulder piece, which is in contact with the brake strap.

The Shoulder piece can be uSed without the elevating gear. Agunmetal bush is supplied for the purpose of fixing. The collar orlargest part of bush is to be applied to take its bearing against theshoulder piece, and the elevating joint pin being passed through, andscrewed firmly into its place, secureS the shoulder piece in position.

Counterbalance to fit to gun.Drive out the cotters, and remove front cross-piece, remove screws

from counterbalance ; the slots will require adjusting to fit the armsof fore-end of frame.

The slotS being cast taper to suit arms of frame, care must betaken to place the counterbalance with the wide part of slots to therear of the guns, and juSt far enough on to clear front cross-piece.In fitting, be careful not to spread or cloSe the frame.

A hole is now to be drilled through each arm of the frame tocorrespond with the fixing screw holeS in counterbalance. Size ofhole *-in. diameter ; place fixing screws in position, and replacefront cross-piece,

Page 50: Instructions for Armourers

To replace an extractor.--Take out the breech block, press on thecentre of the extractor, and turn out the screw ; reverse the above

.operation.To replace a firing pin.—Push out the firing pin with the brasS

wire drift; and inSert a new one ; it is not necesSary to remove theextractor to do thiS. The lug at the tail end of the extractor shouldalways bear upon the, neck of the firing pin, so that it requires apreSsure of about 2 lbS. on the point of the firing pin to force itback into the breech block. It should require a pull of not lessthan 8 lbs. to lift the hook end of the extractor off the plunger. Avery little practice will enable the arniourer, or any of the gun'screw, to feel with the thumb that these weights are correct.

Look springs should weigh between 12 lbs. and 14 lbs. whencompressed 4•in., or when in firing position ; before the springbar is put into the action block, the springs should stand throughabout 1-in.

GUNS, NORDENFELT, 4-BARREL, 1-IN.

To Mount the Guns when received.1. Take the nut and washer off pivot bolt ; mount the gun and

crosshead on pivot ; replace the washer and nut, and screw harddown to shoulder.

2. Turn the elevating hand-wheel until its boss rests upon thegunmetal nut ; turn the inner elevating screw until an arrow-head,which will be found on the thread, coincides with a similar arrow-head on the top end of the outer screw ; swing the elevating gearin the bracket designed for it, keeping the head of break screw tothe rear ; tighten up the pivot screws so that there is no shake inthe nut, and fix with check nuts ; put the elevating pin through theeye of inner Screw, and screw into the frame hard up to theshoulder.

3. Take the collar and worm off the traversing spindle ; placethe worm in the bracket, featherway upwards, and the arrow-beadto the rear ; pass the Spindle through to poSition ; put on the collarand drive in the split taper pin.

4. Drive split and taper pins out of axis pin ; put on hand leverand replace pins.

I r.—Directions to be observed at Periodical Examinations.NOTE.—Care will be taken that the following parts are never

removed unless abSolutely necessary :—Barrels, breech plugs, crosS-pieces, action cam, front-sights, tangent-sight brackets.

(a) To Strip the Gun.

1. Take out the cover pivot screws and remove the cover ; drawback the hand lever until the extractors are well clear of thecartridge carrier ; turn back the cartridge carrier lever catch, andremove the cartridge carrier by lifting it straight up until clear ofthe gun.

Page 51: Instructions for Armourers

2. Push forward the hand lever until the extractors are within12-in. of the barrel ; let two men remove the action block, eachman taking hold of one breech plug and the rear end of the actionblock, and lifting it clear of the guu.

3. Lift out the trigger comb ; turn the tumbler until the featherand featherway coincide, then lift it off.

4. Drive the split and taper pins out of the axis pin, and driveoff the hand lever ; lift out the action and cartridge carrier levers.

5. Strip the action block ; release the thumb screw and turnback the spring bar ; remove the spiral springs and hammers. Theextractors may be taken out by forcing the extractor back slightlyand passing a brass wire between the extractor spring and thebreech plug, this will relieve the preSsure from the extractors, which maybe withdrawn after taking the screws out (whilst theextractor is out, draw the brass wire forward nearly to point ofspring, it can be pushed back when the extractor is to go in again);push the firing pins out with brass wire ;. drive the split pin out ofstud, and lift off the washer and locking-bolt plate ; push thelocking bolts out as far as they will go and turn out the guidescrews ; remove the locking bolts ; drive the Pin out of stud, andremove the collar and friction roller ; remove the cocking arrange-'neut. •

Each part must be thoroughly cleaned before aSsembling ;turpentine or oil only will be used for thiS purpose ; emery clothor any cutting substance must on no account be used.

(b) To Assemble the Gun.

1. Replace the cocking arrangement; put on the friction rollerand collar and drive in the pin ; put in the locking boltS and screwin the guide screws hard enough on the shoulder to permit thelocking boltS to work freely . ; put on the locking-bolt plate andwasher, drive in the split pill, and open out the endS.

2. Put in the firing pins, extractorS, hammers and spiralsprings ; turn the Spring bar and fix with the thumb screw ; seethat all the Screws in action cam are well home.

3. Pass the axiS pin through the hole in the cartridge-carrierlever; then through the axis bracket ; put on the hand lever anddrive in the taper and split pins.

4. Place the tumbler and trigger comb in position, letting thecurved end of the tumbler go into the recess in the trigger comb, whilst the other arm of the tumbler runs to the right and receivespresSure from the tumbler spring.

5. Place the action • block in frame, at the same time workingthe friction roller into the cam.

6. Draw back the hand lever to nearly the end of the strokeand put the cartridge carrier in place ; fasten the cartridge-carrierlever catch.

III.— To Clean the (inn at other timcs atm at PeriodicalExamination&

1. Proceed aS far as paragraph 3 "to strip the gun," then cleanand oil the levers, letting them remain in the gun ; see that thefriction roller on the action lever revolves ; oil the roller.

2. Take the spiral springs, hammerS, extractors, and firing pinsfrom the action block ; clean the hammer channels and the holesthrough the breech plugs ; try the hammers and tiring pins intheir places where they should be so free that if the action block belifted they would fall out.

3. Oil the friction roller and See that it turns on the stud ; itneed not be taken off to do this ; clean the cocking piece.

4. Take off the locking-bolt plate and draw the lockino. bolts as(gfar through as they will come without shifting the guide screws,

clean and oil, put together, and see that it works freely.5. Replace the firing pins, hammers, spiral springs, and extractors,

oiling each part. The slot in the extractor is for the purpose ofallowing the extractor spring to throw a little weight on to thefiring pin. When the firing pin projects beyond the face of thebreech plug, it should require a pressure of not more than 5 lb. topush it back, and not more than 3 lb. when the lock springs areout. The hook end of the extractor should require a pull of 8 to12 lb. to lift it off the breech plug.

6. Clean and oil the trigger-comb rests, tumbler and triggercomb ; see that the trigger comb works perfectly free before puttingin the tumbler ; when the tumbler is in, the trigger comb shouldrequire a pull of 12 to 14 lb., to bring it over to the right hand sideof the frame.

7. Clean and oil the cartridge carrier, and see that it worksfreely to and fro before the action block iS in.

8. See that the cartridge chamber, extractor skits, and cartridgehead receSses are perfectly clean.

9. Oil the action cam and the slides of the action block andassemble the gun.

10. 'Use Rangoon oil, little and often ; this will prevent itgetting thick and clogging the mechanism.

IV.—Examination before Working the Gun.

1. As the following parts can be got at by merely removing thecartridge carrier and action block, they should be oiled before uSingthe gun :-

2. RaiSe the cover, take out the cartridge carrier, and havingbrought the breech plugS up to within 2-in. of the barrels, lift outthe action block and pass forward.

3. Oil the locking bolts, guide screws, and plate ; the actionlever, point, tail and roller ; the cockino.

To dismount the shield.—Compress and draw back the fixingboltS, then lift the Shield out vertically.'

Take off the cover, draw back the hand lever to its full extent, and lift out the cartridge carrier ; push the hand lever forwarduntil the extractors are within of the barrels, then lift out.the action block.

Take out extractors, kick Springs, hammers, and firing pins.Compress end of trigger-comb spring and draw it to the rear,

turn screws half round and lift out the trigger comb.. All parts of the gun are now accessible for examination andcleaning, and no further stripping is to be done at any time unlessto repair damage that may occur to partS not already taken topieces, in which case proceed as follows :-

Support muzzle end of gun and take off elevating bracket.Drive out cotters, take • out joint pin and fixing screwS from'

centre crosspiece, spring the frame open at the rear end, and drawout the rear crosspiece, quadrants, links and link bar.

Take out the keeper screws and drive out the quadrant joint pin,Remove cartridge carrier lever, link bars, links and quadrants.Takeout split and taper pins from axis pin, and remove hand

and actipn levers ; remove traversing slide.Take pivot screws from links and removequadrants.Take keeper screw from stud and remove friction roller ; remove

drill stop.To take barrels from gull, lift out cartridge carrier, take out

action block, take off front crosSpiece and unscrew barrel. Inreplacing barrels, observe that the lines on breech endS coincide withthe lines on centre crosSpiece, otherwise the two flatS near themuzzle will not correspond with the groove in the front crosspiece,or feathers with featherways in guns so fitted.

'1'0 assemble gnn.—Reverse the above operation. To strip the cone mounting.—Drive out the cotter, take off the

an d nut and remove the T joint and clamping screw.

To strip elevating gear.—Turn elevating joint pin until a lineupon it coincides with a similar line upon the elevating bracket ;draw out pin and remove bracket ; remove inner screw and hand-wheel ; drive out taper pin and remove collar, joint pin and outerscrew ; take out pivot Screw and remove brake.

To strip traversing gear:---Drive out taper pin and remove collar, turn hand-wheel until the arrow on spindle coincides with thefeatherway in headstock ; drive out spindle and remove worm ;draw down catch pin, and turn back stem-keeper plate ; removehand nut and lift off headstock.

NOTE.—The gun and headstock, with elevating and traversinggears attached, may be lifted away from the cone as follows : drawdown catch-pin and turn back stem-keeper plate ; take off hand nutand turn traversing hand-wheel until the sides of the elevatingbracket correSponds with two lines on the base of the cone.

The gun, &c., may now be lifted clear of the cone.To assemble mountingS.—Reverse the above operations, taking

care that in putting the elevating screws in the socket Of hand-wheel the arrowS correspond.

To replace an extractor.—Open the cover, press on the centre ofthe extractor and turn out the screw, remove extractor ; reverse theoperation.

To replace a tiring pin.—Take out the action block ; turn thespring bar, and remove spiral springs and hammers ; push the firingpin out with the brass wire drift.springs extractor need - not be takenout to do this. In putting in a new firing pin, pass it through thehammer-head slot into the hole in breech, plug, and presS it homewith the hammer.

When the extractors are in position it should require a pull ofnot less than 8 lb. to lift the hook end from

- the breech plug, thetail of the extractor should bear upon the firing pin, so that itrequires about 2 lb. pressure upon the point of the firing pin toforce it back into the breech plug.

Lock springs shouldweigh between 6 and 7 lb. when compressed7-in., or when in firing poSition.

INSTRUCTION'S FOR ARMOURERS IN STRIPPING AND ASSEMBLINGTIIE GUN:

To dismount the shield.—Compress and draw back the fixingbolts, then lift the shield out vertically.

Turn back the cover and draw the hand lever fully back ; liftout the cartridge carrier, turn the breech block and action block upon to the spring bar, then lif t out together ; lift out the actionlever, take out the hand lever.

Page 55: Instructions for Armourers

To strip the action block.— See that the hammers are released fromthe trigger comb, drive down the spring bar with a piece of hardwood and hammer, draw out the springs and hammers, take out thetrigger-comb spring, lift out the trigger comb.

The firing pins may be pushed out of the breech block with thebrass-wire drift.

Assembling.—Pnt in the hand lever from underneath, and theaction lever from the top.

Put the hammers and lock Springs in the action block, place thetrigger comb in the spring bar, and the spring bar in the actionblock, taking care not to damage the lock springs in so doing, put inthe trigger-comb spring.

Put the firing pins and the extractors in breech block.Stand the action block up on its rear end in the gun, press back

the hammers with the breech block until they are all cocked ; turndown the action block and breech block together, moving the leverslightly until the friction roller goes into the slot in the breechblock.

Put in the cartridge carrier. To replace a barrel.—After having taken out the cartridge

carrier, action and breech blocks, unscrew the joint pin and take offthe sand plate and cover ; puSh out the barrel to the rear, andinsert a fresh one in its place.

The spare tangent sightS may be used either in the right or lefthand brackets ; if used in the right they must be sawn off to thelength of the original right hand sight, and the hole opened out toaccommodate the head of the split pin ; for this purpose holes aredrilled in two positions in the spare sights.

To strip cone mounting.—Rernove hand nut from clamping screw, and T joint and clamping screw from headstock.

To remove elevating gear.—Unscrew check nutS, screw out pivotscrews ; take out fixing screw and remove strap and shoe, the screwmay then be taken from gunmetal nut.

Remove fixing pins, keeper plates, and fixing screws for frontand back clips, drive down locking bolt, and release worm-wheelfrom cone by a blow with a piece of copper or hard wood upon thelugs on the cone provided for that purpose. Remove adjusting nutsand collar (traversing gear), drive out taper pin and remove hand-whsel remove bearing nut (with Gib key), worm and spindle, head-stock and worm wheel ; remove cap-fixing screws and drive downcap, drive out steel bush (from inside of cone), and remove lockingbolt.

To assemble mounting. --Reverse above operations, and See thatthe arrows marked on the threads coincide.

When the extractors are in position it should require a pull of notless than 8 lbs. to lift he hook end from the plunger, the tail endof the extractor should bear upon the firing pin, so that it requiresabout 2 lb. presSure upon the point of the firing pin to force it backinto the plunger. A very little practice will, however, enable thearniourer, or any of the gun's crew, to feel with the thumb-nail thatthis pressure is sufficient, and also to test the weight of theextractors in the same way.

Page 56: Instructions for Armourers

64

Lock springs should weigh 8 lb. when in firing position, theyshould be tested by the spring balance and wire. Before putting 011the spring bar the springs should just stand through the end ofaction block.

Failures likely to occur, and precautions to be taken.Non-extraction may be caused by a weak extractor, an extractor

that is worn at the hook, or by the extractor way iHI the barrel beingdirty, and thus preventing the extractor going doW: in front of thecartridge head.

Missfires may be caused by a weak lock spring, or by the firingpins, hammerS, holes in plungers, or hammer channels in action blockbeing dirty or clogged with oil.

Should a cartridge case be left in the chamber by the failure ofthe extractor, pass the cleaning rod down from the muzzle and ejectit ; the same method may be adopted when the head of a cartridgecase is partly blown away, but not sufficient to admit of the use ofthe clearing plug. Should the base be entirely blown away use theclearing plug, Mark II or III, as followS :--Open the cover anddraw back the lock plungers.

See that centre pin of plug is fully back, push threaded part ofplug into the chamber until the shoulder bears against the breachend of the barrel.

Force the k■ck plunger forward against the centre pin, at thesame time giving the handle of the plug a slight rocking motion ;draw back the lock plunger and depress the handle of the plug ;this will loosen the case, which may then be drawn out.

Tap the centre pin back and remove the cartridge caSe from theplug ; clean all fouling from the thread and the plug is ready foruse again.

The faces of the barrel, centre cross-piece, and cartridge carriermust be kept perfectly clean.

When firing the lever must be taken fully backward and for warduntil brought to a stop. After firing a volley, the lever should inall cases be drawn back so that the empty cases may not be left inthe chamber until the - barrels cool upon them.

The men Should be trained to make a slight pauSe both at thetime of the forward and rearward motion ; there will be but littletime lost, and this will be repaid by the freedom from damage froinhang-fires, which are caused by the cartridges not firing immediatelyafter the capS are struck, when, if tire caSe is unsupported by theplungers, it is burst open, and a part left in tire chamber, throwingthe gun out of action until- it iS cleared, or necessitating one columnof the hopper being emptied.

After firing, examine the distributor, cover, Cartridge carrier andbarrels, to see no live cartridges - have been left in the mechanism.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR ./k. TOURERS IN STRIPPING AND ASSEMBLING.:■, THE GUNS.

To strip the gun.—Ufte out joint pins, cross-head and elevating, and remove the gun from its mounting.

To remove the lock.—Press in the cover lock, open the cover, turnthe crank handle over against the buffer spring and see that theextractor drops, then take hold of the upper extractor stop andraise the lock, allowing the crank handle to come slowly back, then, if there are any live cartridges in the extractor, remove them(while the latter is down) ; now seize the lock in front, give itone-eighth of a turn to the left and lift it out.

When the lock is out of the gun, and it is necessary to releasethe lock spring, great care should be taken, before doing so, to seethat the extractor is at the highest point.

To remove the feed block.—Lift it out by pulling it verticallyupwards in replacing the feed block care should be taken that,if the fuzee spring box is in position, the feed block slide muSt bewell over to the left, so that the stud on the bottom lever engagesin the recess on the left side plate.

To remove the fuzee spring box.—Press the box forward until thelugs on it are clear of the keeper studs on the breech casing. Thespring may then be unhooked from the fuzee chain, and removedfrom the box by unscrewing the adjusting screw.

N.B.—Great care should be taken in removing and replacingthe fuzee spring box to avoid throwing any cross strain on thefuzee chain, as the links are not constructed to withstand a sidethrust, and the chain will break or become damaged with but littleforce if so strained. -

To remove the rear cross-piece.—Drive out the taper fixing pin(from the left) at the rear bottom end of the casing, take hold ofthe handle and raise the gun slightly, strike the top edges of thebreech casing alternately with a wooden mallet and the rear cross-piece will lift out.

To remove the barrel.—Drive out split pin from check levercollar, remove collar and check lever.

Pull out slides right and left.Remove muzzle protector (in guns so fitted), see that the con-

necting rod is held in a vertical, position by its spring, then tarnhandle of crank upright and draw out the barrel from the rear, drive out barrel block fixing pin—from left-hand side—and drivedown barrel block. If the barrels are fitted with trunnions dropand Spring off one Side plate from one of the trunnions, then theopposite one will lift off.

To strip the barrel easing.—UnScrew packing gland at the foreend of the gun and remove packing.

Take out keeper screw and unscrew steam tube.To remove the barrel easing.—Put down the cover and drive out

fixing pin of the cover joint pin, remove collar and joint pin, andtake off cover, place the barrel casing on a box or bench with the

breech casing clear of the box, then give the top edges of the lattera few taps with a wooden mallet (holding the weight at the sametime), and taking care not to strike the gunmetal ; the breech.casing will slide down the dovetails and become detached from the

,̀barrel casing.Then for 0 .

45-in. guns remove fixing wire, unscrew fixing screwS,and remove ejector spring.

For 0 .303-in. guns press the projection of the spring (that holds

the cartridge case in the tube) out of the ejector tube, and driveout the ejector spring.

To strip the feed block.—Drive out spring fixing pin.Drive out bottom lever and remove tot) lever and slide.Drive out axis pin of bottom pawls, remove pawls and feed

block spring.For 0 .

45-in. guns unscrew fixing Screws and remove feed block. spring, drive out axis pins and remove bottom pawls.

Drive out taper pin from roller axis pin, and remove collar, pin

and roller.Remove top pawls from slide by pressing them outwards.N.B.—The slide springs are riveted to the slide. To assemble the gum.—Reverse above operations.

To strip the lock.—See that the lock spring is released.Drive out axis pins for sear, tumbler, and lock spring.

N.B.—In G.G. locks having the Mark II tumbler axis

pin, use the tool removing tumbler axis pin.Remove keeper bracket, lock spring, tumbler, extractor levers,

.sear, and firing pin.Drive out axis pin, for and take out trigger.Drive out keeper pin for, and remove extractor stop and ex-

tractor.Push out gib spring cover, and take out gib spring and gib.

In 0 .303-in. locks drive out fixing pin for extractor spring and

take out extractor spring. In 0.45-in. locks the extractor Spring is riveted to the extractor.

To assemble the lock.—Replace extractor spring and fixing pin

(for 0 . 303-in. guns only).Put in gib and gib spring, and replace gib spring cover.Replace extractor, stop, keeper pin, and fixing pin, firing pin,

tumbler, and tumbler axis pin.Rivet up tumbler axis pin securely by clinching it with a few

blows of a small hammer, and clean off if necessary with a file.Try the tumbler to see that it works freely.

In 0.45-in. G.G. locks (having the Mark II tumbler axis pin)place the shell of the tumbler axis pin into the lock caSing, andpress the spring locking pin home until the barbed end springsout into position and locks the pin.

Replace sear with spring and axis pin ; also trigger, axiS pin,

and fixing pin.Replace extractor levers.Put lock in fired position.Replace lock spring, keeper bracket, and axis pin.See extractor works freely when lock is cocked.

(5669) E 2

Page 60: Instructions for Armourers

68

Replace fixing pin for lock spring axis pin.N.B.--It is very important that the tumbler axis pin Should be

securely riveted, accordingly a new pin Should alwayS be usedwhen assembling a lock. The replacing of a lock spring axis pin can be much facilitated

by making a pointed drift about 2-in. long, aS shown in Sketch,

the diameter on the parallel part being identical with that of theaxiS pM.

The drift should be put in point first from right to left to holdthe keeper bracket and lock spring in their places ; it should thenbe pushed through to the left by the axis pin, which, following thedrift, can now be easily pushed home.

After asSembling the weights of the springs in the lockS should ,be teSted as follows :-(a) Lock spring.—Put lock in cocked position and hold it firmly

(either in a vice or otherwise), then place ring of springbalance over the extreme rear of the square end of sidelevers, and pull until the tumbler just commences to move ;.the weight indicated should be—

For 0 .303-in. locks, 12 to 14 lbS.For 0 .45-in. locks, 16 to 18 lbs.

(b) Gib and extractor springs.—Place the lock in fired positionand secure it as in (a), then observe the weights requiSite to

. push each of these springS back until the projecting Surfaces.. are flush with - the face of the extractor. In each case the

weights should be—For 0 .303-in. locks, 4 to 6 lbs.For 0 .45-in. locks, 6 to 8 Rs.

When testing the gib spring the power should be applied at theupper projection of the gib.

Testing weight of fuzee springs.—Weigh the fuzee spring withthe spring balance as follows :—Place the loop of spring balanceover knob of crank handle, and pull the balance vertically upwards, the reading indicated when the crank handle commences to movewill be the weight in pounds of the fuzee spring. This weightshould be —

For 0 .303-in. guns, between 5 1 and 7 lbs.*For 0 .45-in. gunS, between 12 and 14 lbs.And care should be taken when weighing to see .that the lockworkS quite freely, and that there are no cartridges or emptycartridge cases in the extractor. If the spring is over or not up toweight, remove the fuzee spring box and adjuSt by means of the

" All guns when issued work well with service ammunition when the weight ofspring is between these limits, but when they have been in use some time it mayoccasionally be found necessary to go outside the figures given in order to obtainthe best results.

Page 61: Instructions for Armourers

69

adjuSting screw at the end ; as a rule six turns of the Screw make.a difference of about 1 lb., turning the screw inward increases the-weight and outwards decreases it.

Testing the friction of recoiling portion.—In order to see that the-recoiling portion works freely remove the fuzee spring box, takeout the lock, turn the crank handle upwards, take hold of it withthe right hand and the fuzee with the left, move the recoilingportion backwards and forwardS to see that it works freely, andalso that the barrel goes close home forward.

The weight necessary to move the recoiling portion should not, exceed—

For 0 . 303-in. guns 4 lbs.For 0.45-in. guns 7 lbS.

To be meaSured by placing the ring of spring balance over knob ofcrank handle and pulling to the rear when the handle is slightlyabove the horizontal ; if this is correct then replace the fuzee:spring box and lock.

The clearing plugs are uSed as follows :-Mark II.—Press in cover lock and turn back cover, remove

cartridgeS from extractor and feed block, turn crank handle overuntil it reSts upon the buffer spring, see that centre pin of plug isfully back. insert threaded part of Ong into the chamber until the:shoulder bears against the breech end of the barrel, force the lockforward against the centre pin, at the same time giving the handle-of the plug a slight rocking motion, draw back the lock and depressthe handle of the plug ; this will loosen the case which may thenbe drawn out. Tap the centre pin back and remove the cartridgecase from the plug, clean all fouling from the thread and the plugis ready for use again. (In cases where a live cartridge is left inthe lock, raise the lock and remove the live cartridge, taking carethat the extractor is fully down whilst doing so, otherwise anexplosion might occur ; replace lock in poSition.)

Mark III.—This is a naval implement, and is uSed in a Similar:manner to the Mark II plug, except that an empty cartridge caSe-is to be inserted between the face of extractor and the centre pinwhen forcing the lock forward against the centre pin.

FAILURES THAT MAY OCCUR AND HOW TO REMEDYTHEM.

Accidental Stoppages in the automatic action of the gun aregenerally due to either—

r. Inability of the lock to come back far enough to allow theextractor to drop.

ii. Inability of the lock to come right forward after recoil.iii. Extractor being unable to rise to its highest position

although the lock is almost home.Iv. Failure to fire the cartridge, or get sufficient recoil from

it if ignited, although the lock has gone correctly into theforward position.

Page 62: Instructions for Armourers

70

In each of the above cases it is seen therefore that the lockandextractor are arrested in different positions, and as these are exactly Iindicated by the crank handle, the position of the latter should becarefully observed directly a stoppage occurs. To assist in doingthis diagrammatic sketches are given which show approximatelythe position of the crank handle in each of the above four cases.

The causes of failure are probably :-

t. Too heavy fuzee Spring, want of oil or a light charge.it. Obstruction in chamber due to defective ammunition.

fit. (a) Too light fuzee spring.(b) Want of oil.(c) Damaged lock.(d) Fault in feed.

iv. (a) Missfire.(b) Broken side or extractor levers.(c) Blank cartridge or one with a loose bullet.

The above may be remedied as followsThere is no need to open the cover, simply bring the crank

handle forward on to the buffer spring and let it go, then all isready for firing. If the stoppage is repeated, remove the fuzeespring box and lighten the spring as previously described.

If this stoppage recurs with the spring at minimum weight, thecover should be opened and the bearings and working parts wellOiled.

fr. Open the cover, preSs down the extractor and turn thecrank handle over on to the buffer spring, jerking it up by force ifnecessary, raise the lock and examine the cartridges in the ex-tractor to see if any have been broken circumferentially. If thishas happened the base portion will be seen in the extractor, andthe front broken part will be found to be either (a) enveloping thebullet of the succeeding cartridge and extracted by it, or else (b)left in the chamber.

In case (a) remove the cartridges from the extractor (takingcare that the latter is down while doing so), replace the lock, andwhile the crank handle is resting on the buffer spring, pull the beltthrough the feed block to the left aS far as it will go, shut downthe cover and let go the crank handle, then on turning over thehandle again and pulling the belt to the left, all is ready for firing.

In case (b) remove the cartridges from the extractor as above, also remove the cartridge which has been fed up into position inthe feed block and pull the filled portion of belt to the right clearof the feed block, replace the lock and let go the crank handle, then take the Mark IT clearing plug, see that the centre pin is

Page 63: Instructions for Armourers

71

fully back, turn the crank handle- over on to the butler spring, insert the threaded part of the plug into the chamber until theshoulder bears against the breech end of the barrel ; force the lockforward against the centre pin by allowing the crank handle tocome back slowly with the right hand ; at the same time give thehandle of the clearing plug a sharp rocking motion with the left, draw back the lock, and depress the handle of the plug ; this willloosen the case, which may then be drawn out. Tap the centrepin back. and remove the cartridge case from the plug.

In. First remove thumbS from firing lever, then without open-ing the cover, strike the crank handle sharply with the right handto send it home, taking care to remove. the hand from the knobinstantly ; if this is easily done and then on again pressing thefiring lever the same stoppage recurs after firing a few rounds, remove the fuzee spring box and increase the weight of spring

If thiS stoppage recurs with the spring at maximum weight, the cover should be opened and the bearings and working partswell oiled.

If the gun again fails similarly, the lock should be removed forexamination by the armourer•serjeant and replaced by the spareone.

Should it be found when this stoppage occurs that the crankhandle cannot be easily sent home by a blow from the hand, thenopen the cover and look at the face of feed block, when it willprobably be seen that the cartridges have not been properly fed up.Now feel the belt in the feed block to see whether it iS loose orjammed, if the former it can probably be adjusted by pulling thebelt to the left front ; but should it be tightly fixed with the cart-ridges fed crossways, withdraw the lock (taking care to press downthe extractor while doing so), raise it, and clear it of cartridgesnext replace the lock and fix it as follows :—Turn crank handle onto buffer spring, then with the extractor in the lowest position raisethe lock slightly till clear of its guide ; allow the handle to comeback a little and the lock to rest on the top of the guide ; it willnow be found to be fixed so that on turning the crank handle tothe rear, the recoiling portion is drawn back and the top pawls inthe feed block are moved to the right, thereby releasing the presSureon the belt, so that by pulling the latter to the left 'front the nextcartridge can usually be correctly brought into position. Turn thecrank handle on to buffer spring, replace the lock in - its guides, close the cover, let go the handle, then on turning the crankhandle over again and pulling the belt to the left all is ready forfiring.

A jam in the feed block can usually be readily recogniSed with-out opening the cover, as in that case the recoiling portion isprevented from going right forward, and so a Space can be clearlyseen between the front of the crank bearing and the end of the slotin breech casing.

If it is found that the feed is correct but that the crank handlecannot be sent home, then the lock should be removed for exami-nation, and if necessary- replaced by the spare one,

Page 64: Instructions for Armourers

72

It may be added that the plan of fixing the lock and moving therecoiling portion by turning the crank handle affords a readymethod of oiling the bearing parts of the barrel at its mostimportant points, viz. :—(a) just in front of the gunmetal valve(which can be got at by removing the feed block), and (b) at themuzzle end in front of the packing gland.

iv. Turn the crank handle over on to the buffer spring, pullthe belt to the left through the feed block, and let go the handle.By this action the defective cartridge will be drawn out of thechamber and placed in the ejector tube, and a new cartridge drawnfrom the belt .and placed in the chamber.

If the gun will not fire on again pressing the firing lever, thenopen the cover, and if it is seen that the extractor is quite down, itshows that the side or extractor levers are broken ; the lock shouldtherefore be removed and replaced by the spare one.

Missfires may occur as follows :-1. By a weak lock spring.2. By a firing pin being broken or worn flat on the point.3. Lock mechanism being corroded.4. By a defective cartridge.

In cases, 1, 2, and 3, remove the lock and replace by the spareone.

Case 4 is remedied as described above. If at any time a stoppage occurS during firing and it is desired

to open the cover to examine the cause ; first remove thumbs fromfiring lever and then allow two or three seconds to elapse beforethe cover is opened. If it is seen that the extractor is not quiteup no attempt should be made to raiSe it. On the contrary theextractor should first be pushed down before the crank handle isturned over to the front to draw the lock back, aS by this meansall risk of firing a cartridge accidently is avoided.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE OF 0.45-IN. MUZZLE

ATTACHMENT, IF SO FITTED.

Remove muzzle protector from the barrel, and packing glandfrom front of gun.

Screw on gunmetal gland, taking care not to jam the barrel.Screw the cup-muzzle on to the muzzle of barrel.See that the adjusting screw is screwed as far for ward as

possible in the outer casing, and screw the casing on to the gun-metal gland.

If there is not sufficient recoil to work the gun it can be regu-lated by screwing in the adjusting screw a little nearer the barrel, but care must be taken in doing so that the adjusting screw is notturned in too far and thus comes in contact with the cup-muzzle.

When correctly regulated, lock the adjusting screw with thecheck nut.

N.B.—The weight on the crank handle should be the same aswhen firing ball.
