TO BUILD UNDERHUNG CRANE BRIDGES

THE INFORMATION CONTAINED IN THIS MANUAL ISFOR INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY ANDCOLUMBUS MCKINNON CORPORATION DOES NOTWARRANT OR OTHERWISE GUARANTEE (IMPLIEDLYOR EXPRESSLY) ANYTHING OTHER THAN THECOMPONENTS THAT COLUMBUS MCKINNONCORPORATION MANUFACTURES AND ASSUMES NOLEGAL RESPONSIBILITY (INCLUDING, BUT NOTLIMITED TO CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES) FORINFORMATION CONTAINED IN THIS MANUAL.

GENERAL

The assembly and manufacturing instructions including theparts lists detailed in this manual are for use in conjunctionwith the manufacturers components identified by Catalognumbers listed under the THREE types of drives coveredby this manual and as shown on pages 2 and 3.

The crane builder must check for compliance with all local, state and national codes. On a hand powered crane with anelectric hoist, a fused safety disconnect switch should beprovided mounted on the bridge near the main collectors.Crane wiring should be done by a licensed electrician andbe in accordance with the National Electric Code.

The crane bridges described in this manual are intended fornormal indoor service. Bridges to be used for outdoor orunusual service require special consideration.

This manual illustrates specific configurations for the rangeof coverage shown, specifically for 10 ft. thru 60 ft. spanand up to and including 10 ton capacity. Minor deviations tothe configurations shown (such as shaft bearing spacing, shaft lengths, etc.) may be made providing that any changesand/or alterations to those shown, be performed only by aproperly qualified person. COLUMBUS MCKINNONCORPORATION accepts no responsibility for any alteredbridge configurations.

The proper catalog numbers must be ordered to build therequired crane. Five catalog numbers are required to build ahand geared crane. Five catalog numbers are required foran individual drive crane and seven catalog numbers arerequired for the center drive crane. Additional options foradditional equipment are available and listed by catalognumbers on pages 2 and 3.

Material listed by catalog numbers on pages 2 and 3 areapplicable only to crane configurations outlined in thismanual, specifically limited to a maximum rated load of 10ton and a maximum span of 60 ft.

Cataloged end trucks listed on page 2 will accommodatethe beam sizes listed below. The crane builder must determinethat the runway beam flange selected will support theresulting maximum wheel load.

The 5 ton end trucks have 6-1/2" diameter solid steelwheels (maximum allowable load is 9000 pounds per pair ofwheels). 10 ton end trucks have 8" diameter solid steel

wheels (maximum allowable load is 18000 pounds per pairof wheels).

BRIDGE BEAMS: For each capacity, span and type ofbridge drive select from tables shown on pages 4, 5, 6 & 7.

The I-beam which is selected to be used for the bridgegirder must be straight with flanges parallel to each otherand flanges 90 degrees to the web. See figure A below.

Center Drive 10

RUNWAYS: Runway beams must be properly designed tosupport bridge, hoist, trolley and rated load. Runway beamsmust be level and parallel within ± 1/8". Runway stops mustbe positioned to contact both ends of the cranesimultaneously.

MATERIAL TO BE PURCHASED LOCALLYTO COMPLETE A CRANE BRIDGE

STRUCTURAL STEEL: All structural steel should be firstquality, free from rust and excessive mill scale, and conformto ASTM A 36.

For the complete drawing identifying all dimensions, materialsizes, location of cross shafting, brackets, etc. refer to thefollowing chart:

NOTICE

A. All of the tables used in selection of structuralsteel beams have been produced by ourengineering department using well establisheddesign guides for this type of crane bridge. ITIS IMPORTANT THAT ALL INSTRUCTIONSBE FOLLOWED AND THAT RECOMMENDEDCOMPONENT APPLICATION LIMITS NOT BEEXCEEDED.

B. Assembly of beam and channel requires welding.IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT TO THESAFETY OF THIS BRIDGE THAT THISWELDING BE DONE BY A COMPETENTWELL TRAINED WELDER. It is our strongrecommendation that the welder used in thisconstruction be qualified as prescribed by theAmerican Welding Society (AWS) Specificationfor Welding Industrial and Mill Cranes D14.1 -latest issue.

FABRICATION OF GIRDER FOR BRIDGEBEAM WITH CAPPING CHANNEL

Refer to Figure B. Place channel on supports as shown inStep I. The I-beam is sighted for camber and placed withcamber in direction shown in Step II. Weld one end ofchannel to the I-beam. Clamp, with “C” clamps, the channelto the I-beam flange – provide sufficient “C” clamps so as tohold channel in contact with the I-beam. Weld in accordance

with the weld information given, starting at one end, staggering weld from side-to-side, proceeding to the oppositeend without interruption. It is important to stagger weld fromside-to-side in order to retain beam straightness. Afterwelding, draw a taut string from end to end of beam asshown. Beam should either be parallel to string or havesome camber. Camber should not exceed 1/800 of span.

CROSS SHAFT: For hand geared and center drive cranes, cross shafts are required. The cross shafts are to be 1-3/16" diameter AISI 1018 cold drawn steel, with standard milltolerance of +.000", -.002". For shaft lengths, refer to theappropriate Bridge Assembly Drawing. (Builder must checkthat cross shaft couplings clear cross shaft supportbearings.)

TRANSFER LATCH: For cranes to be equipped with atransfer latch, all angles welded to the top flange of thegirder must be notched as shown in Figure C. Also the “S”and “T” dimensions should be determined from the appropriateBridge Assembly Drawing.

NOTES:

1. CUT CHANNEL AND I-BEAMTO LENGTH AS DETERMINEDFROM GIRDER SIDE.

CROSS CONDUCTOR ASSEMBLY

Refer to Cross Conductor Arrangement drawing page 16.

A cross conductor system is a means of providing electriccurrent from the main conductors to the moving hoist-trolley.

The type of cross conductor system is a guarded type.Shown on page 16, is a typical type using a figure (8) barwith an insulating cover. Spacing shown does not insurethat such spacing will be correct for all hoist-trolleycombinations. Responsibility for checking all clearancesrests with the builder. The builder is also CAUTIONED toconsult with the conductor manufacturer on specialapplications involving transfer of hoist-trolley with the useof a transfer latch, and also for special conditions involvingunusual temperature and environment.

Care should be exercised in balancing the number ofconductors on either side of the bridge beam. (This isespecially critical with a light capacity hoist-trolley unit.)Control circuit collectors should be 30 Amp. Catalog#904101.

The main power collectors can be 30 Amp. Catalog #904101if the hoist motor is 10 Horsepower or less. If the hoistmotor exceeds 10 Horsepower then the 100 Amp. Catalog#904110 collector must be used.

MAIN COLLECTOR ASSEMBLY

Refer to the Main Collector drawing page 17.

The collectors listed Catalog #904101 and 904110 arecompatible with and will operate only on conductor barslisted as Catalog #904025 and 904026 furnished fromCOLUMBUS MCKINNON CORPORATION. The builder mustcheck to ensure that the suggested spacing and location ofthe conductors will clear all obstructions in the building.

one side only.) Shaft and coupling is then secured by hexhead bolts with lockwashers and nuts (see Figure 3).

16. Slide bearing locking collars in place next to pillowblocks. Make sure that the counterbore in collar is fittedover the extended inner race of the bearing. Fasten to shaftwith set screw in locking collar.

17. Locate, place and weld diagonal horizontal truss angles(Items E & F ).

18. It is suggested that the electrical enclosure and fuseddisconnect switch be located off the channel auxiliarygirder, and be supported by it.

19. If ballast resistors (optional) are furnished, four holesare provided in the side of the electrical enclosure formounting.

20. Locate and fasten trolley stop angles (Item L ) to theends of the girder by drilling 11/16" diameter holes throughthe web of the girder and fastening with 5/8" diameter boltsand stop nuts.

PAINTING

After all welding is completed and prior to installing thecross conductors, wire brush all steel and remove all scaleweld splatter, flux and any other foreign matter. Greasespots are to be cleaned using commercially availablesolvent. Wash with clear water an area six inches eitherside of all welds to remove flux residue.

The electrical panel must be closed, and areas such as theswitch handle, Off-On identification, wheel gear and pinion, any nameplate, etc., must be masked prior to painting.

Any national brand zinc-rich, chromate primer can be usedand applied according to the manufacturers directions.Final coat is recommended to be high gloss enamel, especially suited for steel surfaces and as recommendedby any national brand paint manufacturer. Application mustbe in accordance with manufacturers’ recommendations.

MARKING

Codes require that the capacity of the bridge be shown onboth sides of the crane, legible from the floor. Normalpractice for marking is to use capacity in tons. For example:1 TON, 2 TON, etc. Stencil forms are readily available thatmay be used with brush on or spray-can paint. Commerciallyavailable block letters and numerals with adhesive backingcould also be used. Selection of size should be such thatthe sign can be easily read from the operating floor.

The builder’s name shall also be placed on the crane in aprominent location along with a serial number or othermeans of easy identification.

INSTALLATION OF CRANE BRIDGE

NOTE: Minimum runway beam size allows verticalclearance for bridge wheels between runway beamflanges. Encroachment of flange connections intothis area may cause interference.

1. Open End Runway. If one end of the crane runway isopen and no interference is encountered the crane bridgecan be placed on the end of the runway. First checkdistance between wheels. The distance between the insidefaces of the wheel flanges should be the width of thebottom flange of the runway beam plus 1/4". See Figure E.Note also that the dimensions from the back of the wheelsto the side of the truck should be equal as shown in FigureE. If wheel adjustment is required, see paragraph 4. Ifwheels do not require adjusting, lift crane bridge so thatwheels are level with contact surface on runway beam.Carefully move crane bridge onto runway. Figure E

12830

Be certain that electrical power supply to runway currentconductors (if used) is "off" and locked in the openposition.

WARNING If crane bridge is mounted on an open-end runway rail, then end stops must be installed to prevent crane bridgefrom running of the end of the runway rail resulting ininjury to the operator and others and damages to theload and other property. End stops per trolley stop tableon Bridge Assembly Drawing, may be used and installedper instructions given.

F. Loosen set screws over keys, apply a fewdrops of LOCTITE 290 and retighten as in StepE above.

NOTE: It is suggested that hoist and trolley beinstalled on crane bridge at this time so all wiring andconnections can be completed.

FUSE AND MAINLINE DISCONNECT PANELS

Mainline disconnect panels and fuse bridge control panelsare provided as options to assist users in complying withOSHA codes. When ordering with crane, they will becompletely installed inside of electrical enclosures.

Electrical service is to be connected to crane equipped withfuse panels and mainline disconnect panels as shown in

wiring diagram. Wiring diagrams are in Part No. 113533-74.

LUBRICATION

a. Wheel bearings are permanently lubricated and requireno additional lubricant.

2. Removable Runway Section. In some installations aremovable section of runway may be available. If so,remove runway section, check crane bridge wheeladjustment and install crane bridge as in paragraph 1, andreinstall runway section.

3. Wheel Removal. If the methods previously describedare not possible, the crane bridge wheels must be removed.Refer to Figure E, page 17. Loosen nut A and bolt B .Back axle and wheel out to truck side by backing out bolt B . Locking nut A may be used to jack out wheel andaxle. With external retaining ring pliers with right anglepoints, remove retaining ring D . Hold wheel to keep fromfalling, remove bolt B and remove axle. Lift crane bridge torunway level and secure. Reinstall wheels in reverse orderof removal. See paragraph 4 for wheel adjustment.

4. Wheel Adjustment. Measure the width of the bottomflange of the runway beam and add 1/4". This is to be thedimension between the inside faces of the wheel flanges asshown in Figure E. Lift or jack up truck from the runwaybeam (to remove weight from the wheels) and adequatelysecure. Loosen locking nut A and adjust bolt B on a set ofwheels to get the correct dimension between wheel flangesand to maintain equal dimensions from the back of thewheel to the side of the truck as shown in Figure E. Afterwheels are correctly adjusted tighten lock nut A againstaxle plate C making certain that bolt B is also tight toaxle plate C . After all wheels are adjusted, lower truck torunway and check clearance between wheel flange andedge of beam (1/8").

5. On a hand geared or a motor driven crane, loosen thetwo set screws holding each pinion in the geared truck. IfLOCTITE has been used, some heat may be necessary toloosen set screws. Align the teeth of the pinions with thegeared wheels and tighten the set screws.

NOTICE

It is recommended that for positive locking of thedrive pinions (Figure 1, Ref. No. 18) on hand gearedand motor driven end trucks, the following procedurebe used (after wheel adjustment is complete).

A. Make sure the area on the shaft under the drivepinions in their adjusted position is free from oiland dry. Use a suitable non-oily solvent orLOCTITE Safety Solvent 755.

B. Align the teeth of the pinions with the gearedwheels and lightly tighten the set screws whichengage the pinion keys.

C. Remove the other set screws and rotate thepinion shaft until these set screw holes areabove horizontal.

D. Apply LOCTITE 290 in the set screw holesuntil it can be seen flowing from the pinion boreat the shaft.

Power supply must be same voltage, frequency and phaseas specified on crane motor nameplate

CAUTION

The end trucks of this crane were equipped with safetylugs held by high strength bolts when shipped. Becertain that these safety lugs are firmly bolted in placeprior to crane use.

WARNING

This equipment must be effectively grounded accordingto the National Electrical Code, or other applicablecodes. If the grounding method used is through thetruck wheels, then each section of runway must begrounded by metal-to-metal connection to the buildingground. Certain environments may prevent propergrounding by this means and in this case a separategrounding conductor should be provided.

OPERATING PRECAUTIONS

Safe operation of an overhead hoist is the operator’sresponsibility. Listed below are some basic rules that canmake an operator aware of dangerous practices to avoidand precautions to take for his own safety and the safety ofothers. Observance of these rules in addition to frequentexaminations and periodic inspection of the equipmentmay save injury to personnel and damage to equipment.

DO NOT load bridge beyond rated capacity.DO NOT subject bridge to side loads. Always centertrolley over load when hoisting.

DO NOT stand and DO NOT cause or allow others tostand or get under any load the bridge is supporting.DO keep clear, and make sure others keep clear, of anyload the bridge is supporting.

DO NOT attempt to operate crane bridge beforecompleting tests and adjustments.

DO NOT ram bridge into end stops, other bridge, or anyobstruction on beam. Improper and careless operationcan result in a hazardous condition for operator andload.

ALWAYS be sure load is clear of obstruction beforetraversing load.

If crane bridge is mounted on an open-end runway rail, then end stops must be installed to prevent cranebridge from running off the end of the runway railresulting in injury to the operator and others anddamages to load and other property. End stops pertrolley stop table in Bridge Assembly Drawing may beused and installed per instructions given.

Refer to hoist and trolley instruction manuals for safetywarnings on hoist and trolleys.

Read and comply with ANSI B30.11 Monorails andUnderhung Cranes, latest edition.

Read and comply with all local, state and nationalsafety codes.

MAINTENANCE

Inspect the bridge on a regular maintenance schedule.Check to make sure wheel axle adjustment bolts and allconnections are tight. Check wheel tread surfaces for wearor damage. Check truck sides for any evidence of overloador damage. Replace any worn or damaged parts using onlyfactory approved replacement parts.

b. Drive wheel gears are to be lubricated with an opentype gear grease which is heavy, plastic, extreme pressureand tacky; such as MOBILTAC 275 NC or equal.

c. The hollow shaft worm gear reducer lubricant should bechanged every year or 2000 hours of service for moderateusage. The lubricant should be changed more frequently ifthe service is more severe. Use one pint of AGMA lubricantnumber 7, compounded, if the ambient temperature is 15°to 60°F or AGMA lubricant number 8, compounded, if theambient temperature is 50° to 125°F.

d. It is recommended that the areas of the cross shaftcovered by gear reducers, bearings and couplings be coatedwith FEL-PRO C5-A, or equal, anti-seize lubricant.

Before crane operation the vent plug must be in the properlocation in the gear reducer. The vent plug replaces the pipeplug in the highest location on the end of the gear reducer(see Figure 5).

OPERATION

Prior to placing the crane into service, OSHA requires thatthe user perform and record certain tests including proofloading of the crane. Refer to ANSI B30.11 for informationconcerning these requirements.

Each operator should be thoroughly instructed in theoperation of the crane, its’ limitations both in capacity andbridge and hoist travel, as well the cranes’ safety features.

INSPECTION

The crane should be inspected at the beginning of eachshift. All functional mechanisms should be in good workingorder. Check limit switches, brakes, electrical equipment, and other SAFETY devices. Check crane operation withoutload. Any unusual sounds, vibrations, anything wrong orapparently wrong should be reported to the operators’supervisor immediately. Inspect hoist and trolley asrecommended in manufacturer’s hoist and trolley manual.

Complete inspection of the crane is to be performed atleast every six months and more frequently when conditionsrequire.

Do not operate a crane, hoist or trolley having unusualvibrations, sounds, warnings or with anything wrong orapparently wrong. Danger may be present that the craneoperator cannot see. Determine and correct cause ofunusual conditions and make certain the crane can beoperated SAFELY.

WARNING

These crane bridges are not designed nor intended tobe used for support or transport of people or fortransporting loads over people.
