BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE

At its summer retreat, the department set its goals for the 2017-2018 school year:

1. Provide excellent customer service!

2. Building capacity in self to benefit others!

3. Take photos; use Twitter; blog!

4. Improve districts’ test scores!

5. Increase awareness and usage of resources!

ISS is pleased to announce additions to the department: Danielle Cornish, Special Education School

Improvement Specialist; John Larson and Jennifer Woytkiw, Technology Integrators; Sara Haynes, Librarian; and

Stephen Garby, School Improvement Math Specialist.

The department’s focus for the year is to meet all of its goals. These goals will drive all of our decisions. Each

department member’s workspace has a copy of the goals posted to ensure they are on each and everyone’s mind

as we speak to and plan for districts. Follow us on Twitter @bocesiss where we will post resources and updates

about the department.

All members are engaged in their own professional development in order to be able to respond quickly to

districts’ questions and needs. The state Frameworks groups of ELA, Math, Teacher/Leader Effectiveness,

Science, and Social Studies will be attended, and the information will be turn keyed. In the coming months, a

renowned educational researcher will be visiting downstate, and the department is looking forward to learning

from him. The math and ELA specialists along with the department’s director will be sharing what they learn at a

conference sponsored by a national organization of staff developers, Learning Forward. Several department

members will be attending the NYSCATE conference in late fall. The ISS Department is thankful for the learning

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS/UPDATES:

COLLABORATIVE EFFORTS WILL PAY OFF One of Steve Garby's most exciting opportunities this school year will be helping to spearhead Tri-Valley's

Schoology implementation. Along with other members of the instructional support services team, Garby will work

with the teachers of Tri-valley to use the Schoology learning management system to power the use of technology with

students. The math specialist held workshops in Tri-valley to introduce the platform to staff and assist them with

getting their classes up and running for the beginning of the school year.

Another fun project for the ISS team this year will be helping to establish PLCs in certain instructional programs at

RPEC. Along with Sadie Roosevelt, Garby has been preparing and facilitating workshops on the fundamentals of the

PLC model and the specific plans for this year's PLC focuses. The ISS team is looking forward to assisting this

program's growth throughout the year and in years to come.

Judy Brink, Director, Teacher Center

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS/UPDATES:

Teacher Center Network Update The teacher center recently received word that its 2017-2018 grant was approved by NYSED. This allows the center

to move full steam ahead with its plans for providing support and training for the teachers and school related personnel

of Sullivan County.

The teacher center policy board is experiencing some changes as they begin this new school year. The team is

currently looking for a replacement of the chief school administrator representative due to the retirement of Dr. William

Silver. In addition, Ruth-Ellen LaRuffa, a long-time teacher member of the policy board, recently retired from SC

BOCES. These members will be greatly missed.

Sadie Roosevelt, School Improvement Specialist, ELA

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS/UPDATES:

On-Going Professional Development Key to Sustainability Sadie Roosevelt facilitated a workshop at George Ross Mackenzie Elementary School during one of Eldred CSD’s

opening conference days focusing on best practices for recess. This professional development session was offered to

teachers in an effort to support the adoption of the district’s wellness policy. The presentation covered current research

outlining best practices for recess, both indoor and outdoor, as well as the academic, physical, and social/emotional

benefits for students. The benefits of using natural, or logical, consequences to correct misbehavior was also addressed.

Follow up will be provided through the school year, if needed.

Sadie Roosevelt will be facilitating evening professional development sessions at Monticello Central School

District, beginning at Cooke Elementary. The first session, in late September, will focus on itemizing and analyzing

NYS test data for grades 3-5. This exercise will help teachers identify the areas in which students are performing well

and which areas need more focus. From there, action plans for moving forward can be designed.

Lynn Miller, Director, School Library Services

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS/UPDATES:

Resources Un-Bound In early August, Ms. Miller attended and presented at OverDrive’s Users’ Conference in Cleveland, OH. Along with

learning about marketing tips and other resources, the library director was able to present. Ms. Miller was the last of a

four-member panel sharing library programs for encouraging students to read. Sullivan County’s March Book Madness,

facilitated by School Library Services, received a very positive response from the audience and the OverDrive

personnel. Discussions are occurring to promote nationwide this program that originated at SC BOCES.

Sara Haynes was recently hired provisionally as a Librarian. Ms. Haynes has experience as a school librarian and

possesses great technical skills for managing and updating the department’s web pages. The new librarian has taken

responsibility for LibGuides, online web pages created by librarians to help patrons perform various tasks, such as

using library resources or doing research. For Sullivan County schools, School Library Services is striving to provide

the newest and latest of the library resources with point and click technology. The link to SC BOCES’ LibGuide is:

http://guides.sullivansls.org/c.php?g=610672&p=4238308

Ms. Miller and Ms. Haynes provided 2 hour PD sessions in Eldred for their teachers on all the eResources they can

access for teaching and learning. There are many different educational materials to share: print, non-print, eBooks,

databases, websites and streaming media. The school library is not about checking out books but connecting people to

the resources available, says the library services director. When a patron has a query, the best appropriate materials are

selected for that individual by the school librarian. The LibGuide provides links to all these different sources based on

the learning standards for the various disciplines. Each of the tabs focuses on a different subject area and the curriculum

needs for the school.

Susan Zieres, Coordinator, Model Schools and Arts in Education

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS/UPDATES:

New Opportunities for Technology-Centered Learning For the past several years, Model Schools has offered training in and the loaning of robotics/technology equipment

to our component districts free of charge. While at ISTE this spring, Ms. Zieres learned about new and affordable

products that integrate with classroom curricula. The Model School’s offering has been expanded with classroom sets

of Sphero Robots, Bloxels, Osmos, and Google Expeditions.

The coordinator is excited to introduce two new staff members to the Model Schools team. John Larson will be

working at Monticello 3 days and here at BOCES 2 days where he will be hosting workshops focused on integrating

technology and working with the component districts integrating STEM and active learning tools into the classrooms.

Mr. Larson will also monitor the department’s Twitter feed and blog. Jennifer Woytkiw will be working at BOCES 5

days a week with the teachers on implementing Google in their classrooms, System 44, Star, Castle Learning, and any

additional technology training the teachers seek out.

The scholastic arts program kicks off in September, and already many participation forms from many of our districts

who have participated for years have been received. Two new districts—Beacon High School and Newburgh Free

Academy—have inquired about the joining the program.

A new district is joining distance learning. Liberty Central School is working with a blended learning model for

some of their high school courses and are using curriculum developed by Right Reasons Technology. They are also

using Edgenuity curriculum for credit recovery.
