What is it?

• Brainstorming is an activity that encourages students to focus on a topic and share ideas. it generates a quantity of ideas from the students themselves.

• it teaches acceptance and respect for another individual’s differences

• it encourages learners to take risks in sharing their ideas and opinions

• it demonstrates to students that their knowledge are valued and accepted

• it introduces the practice of idea collection prior to beginning tasks such as writing or solving problems

HOW is it used?

• By group (can also be done on your own), define the problem or idea to be brainstormed. Make sure that the topic is clear.

• Start the brainstorming. • Once you have finished brainstorming, go through the results

and begin evaluating the responses. Some initial qualities to look for when examining the responses include: - looking for any answers that are repeated or similar. - grouping like concepts together. - eliminating responses that definitely do not fit.

• Now that you have narrowed your list down some, discuss the remaining responses as a group.

Cloze Procedure

What is it?• Cloze procedure is a technique in which words are

deleted from a passage and the students insert words as they proceed with reading.

• it assesses the extent of students' knowledge of a subject

• it encourages students to find out the meaning of a word while reading

• it encourage students to think critically and analytically about text and content

• E.g. With the price of f______ going up all the t______, more people are trying t___ raise some of their f_____ in their own back y______.

HOW is it used?

• Supply choices for the blanks.Just as ____________have fur, birds have ____________.(coats, animals) (feathers, wings)

• When learners have used the technique described above and can replace the appropriate words from the choices supplied, provide passages in which every fifth word or every tenth word is randomly deleted and only a letter or two of the correct word is available, perhaps a beginning consonant or consonant blend

• When the learners do well with this task, indicate only the blank with no additional clues.

Cooperative Learning

What is it?

• Cooperative learning simultaneously addresses academic and social skill learning by students.

• It is a team approach where the success of the group depends upon everyone pulling his or her weight.

• It’s basically a fancy term for Group Work.

HOW is it used?

• Student groups are small, usually consisting of two to six members.

• Grouping is mixed with respect to student characteristics.

• Members share the various roles and are mutually dependent in achieving the group learning goal.

• While the academic task is the main task, students also learn the importance of maintaining group harmony, and respecting individual views.

Debating

What is it?

• Debating is a contest of argumentation where two opposing individuals or teams defend and attack a given proposition.

• Debate forces the participants to consider not only the facts of a situation but the implications as well.

• Debates require students to engage in research, encourage the development of listening and talking skills, create an environment where students must think critically

• The competitive aspects encourage engagement and a commitment to a position.
