Organization
• To make sense of all this and make the
process a bit easier for all, in Irving we’re
centralizing the online textbook information in
one place for students and in one place for
teachers.
Textbook Server Creation • Indistrict server supports these files
• Access point on district staff page http://irvingisd.net/education/components/scrapbook/default.php?sectiondetailid=17332
Slide 34
• Access point on district student page
• Virutal server memory added as needed
• Plenty Gobs Lots and lots of space needed if storing
.pdf files, video files, etc.
• Web access means more Internet traffic so more band
width will be needed
• Who’s going to be the webmaster for this?
• First page of student
• Show teacher textbook server example
Parent Access
• Parents use their students logins
• Copies of textbooks can be downloaded on
home computers as well as student laptops
Teacher Textbook Server
• Now for teachers the security is beefed up a
bit and can only be accessed by staff logins.
• Show student textbook server ex.
How Are You Going To Work With
Other District Departments?
• Is it your decision alone?
• How does curriculum department feel about
this?
• How are departments communicating with
each other about the needs?
• How will this be sustained within district?
Team Approach
Needs to show intertwined reality

What About Feelings?
• How do feel principals about this?
• What about students?
• What about teachers?
• Video clip
Who’s the Hands On Person?
• Who will manage the online subscriptions
within your district?
• How’s the student data going to be entered
into the program?
– Import file
– Hand typed by teacher
– Students enter themselves
Software Evaluation
• Asking us to fill out a software evaluation form
on these online programs
• Hassle, but we’re expecting the network’s
support
• “They” need to be in the “know”
• www.irvingisd.net/softwareevaluation Slide 36
Software Evaluation • Vendor
• Product
• Alignment with curriculum
• Deployment
• Data security***
• Costs
• Instructional focus/Learner focus
• Costs in human and hardware resources
• Technical support
***Data Security
• COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection
Act)
• Privacy of data
– Does this software require student data or
information to be shared or transferred?
– Who’s going to have access to this data?
– Is it more than directory information?
– Is this company COPPA compliant?
– Click here to read more about COPPA
http://www.coppa.org/coppa.htm
Maintaining Software/Hardware
• Whose going to maintain the student data
base? (students do move around)
– Automatic process
– Teacher
– Technology department
• What about the hardware?
– How fast a turnaround in support?
Publisher Interface
• How does each publisher interface with your district?
– Import files
– You create all the data
– Active Directory
– SIF
– IP authentication
– Account name and password (who creates?)
• Push for standardization through TEA!!
AUP (Acceptable Use Policy)
• Need student buy in for responsibility and
acceptable use practices
• Need parents buy in so that they realize the
value of this tool
• Signed AUP
It’s a New World in Textbooks
• Business as usual isn’t what it was
• Advocates of new TEA method of funding
• Political hotbed
– IMAT is looked at as a funding source
– Old ideas of just order the book
– Old idea of one textbook/student
– Technology allotment “absorbed”
– ESL, AP, and GT needs
– Who’s going to pay if you make an ordering mistake?
