This document is a quick reference guide for the use of the Instron 3365 testing machine. It does not replace formal training. For any doubt or problem contact [email protected], tel. 241
1. Turn on the machine from the switch on the right side
2. Only for tensile/wire tensile tests: open air pressure handle. Do not modify the pressure from the
gauge.
3. Turn on PC and log in with your IIT credentials

4. Open the Bluehill 3 software. This must be done 2 minutes after turning on the instrument.
5. Click the Test icon (Prova)
6. Select the testing method. For standard tensile test it is “LC_tensile.im_tens”. Click on Next
(Avanti) 7. Select the directory and file name. Remember to browse to select the right folder!

8. Balance load (Bilanciamento carico soft button)
9. Calibrate initial position:
a. Get the clamps lightly in contact with the physical buttons. Confirm contact looking at the LOAD (Carico) signal, which should be ≈1N, either negative (if you are testing in tension) or positive (in compression)

b. Reset gauge length (Reimposta il tratto utile soft button)
c. Move the clamp at the desired distance. For tensile tests it is typically 35 mm d. Reset gauge length again. The Deformazione a trazione signal should now be 0 e. Set the stopper close to the safety trigger

a. Tension only: standard shape: cut with the hollow die punch cutter and measure thickness
of sample.
b. Select and input the testing rate. Typical values are: 1 mm/min for brittle materials, 10
mm/min for ductile materials, up to 100 mm/min for elastomers. c. Tension only: mount sample inserting one end on the top clamp and close by pressing once
the CLOSE pedal

d. Insert the other end in the bottom clamp and press the pedal again. Be sure the sample is
straight and centered
e. Click on Start (inizio)

f. If the instrument detects the sample breaking, remove the sample by pressing the OPEN pedal
and click OK in the prompt window. The clamp will return to the starting position (extension (corsa)=0)

g. If the instruments does not detect the sample breaking, when load falls to 0, click on Stop
(Arresto), remove the sample by pressing the OPEN pedal and click on Return (Ritorno)
h. Before mounting the next sample, check whether load is lower than |0.001 N|. If not, click
on Balance load i. Repeat for all samples
11. At the end of testing session, click on Finish (Fine)

12. A prompt will ask whether you wish to start another set of samples with the same parameter. Click
yes or no accordingly
13. Go to the home screen and click on Exit (Esci)
14. After 2 minutes turn, off the instrument and close the air pressure handle. 15. Copy the files (report, .doc or .pdf format) and the raw data folder from the
documents/Instron/Output/ folder into the \\iit.local\public\Nanobiotech\MCF public folder 16. Log off or turn off the PC
